Live Action Dumbo Film On It's Way

Clearly emboldened by the success of Maleficent and without waiting to see how its latest adaptations of Cinderella or The Jungle Book perform, Disney has been digging through its animated archives again and has come up with Dumbo . Transformers: Age Of Extinction writer Ehren Kruger has been hired to turn the elephant tale into a live action adventure. Presumably, this updated take on the 1941 classic will blend CG with real-world settings to re-tell the tale of the elephant born with comically huge ears. Initially mocked for his giant lobes, Dumbo has the last laugh – and learns some important life lessons to boot – when his best pal, Timothy Q. Mouse, helps him learn how to fly. It’s early days for the new project, which so far only boasts Kruger on writing duty with Tron: Legacy producer Justin Springer set to produce. Dumbo represents the latest ‘toon title the Mouse House is pushing into the remake machinery; Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella is due out next March while The Ju

The Fault In Our Stars Rules The Box Office

It was a battle of romance vs. sci-fi this weekend at the American box office, and love really did conquer all, as The Fault In Our Stars soundly trounced Edge Of Tomorrow in the quest for the top of the charts. With Fault novel writer John Green’s impressive social media following and the presence of rising star Shailene Woodley in the lead driving interest, The Fault In Our Stars drew fans of the book and the actress in droves, front-loading attendance for a result of $48.2 million this first weekend alone. That means the movie has already taken in four times the amount it cost to make, and shows no sign of slowing down despite a drop between Friday and Saturday, with audiences giving it a healthy thumbs up, which indicates it’ll have positive word of mouth appeal. It’s also yet more clear proof that films driven by women in front of the camera and in the audience can be hugely successful, especially when you consider that Fault deposed Angelina Jolie and Maleficent from the

Bill Condon Set To Direct Beauty & The Beast Live Action Film

With the recent release of “ Maleficent ,” which grossed more than $170 million worldwide in its opening weekend, Disney is working fast on its next live-action fairy-tale adaptation. Bill Condon is set to direct a live-action version of “ Beauty and the Beast ” for Disney. Evan Spiliotopoulos is writing the script with Mandeville Films producing. The studio’s 1991 animated feature version of “ Beauty and the Beast ” grossed more than $375 million worldwide, spawned a Broadway play and became one of the few animated pics to receive a best picture Oscar nomination. Disney has been on a roll lately thanks to successful updates of literary classics like “Alice and Wonderland” and “The Wizard of Oz” and reinventions of its own stories into big box office hits. The Mouse House is also developing a live-action version of “The Jungle Book,” which has Jon Favreau directing, and its “Cinderella,” helmed by Kenneth Branagh, is set to bow next March. Condon is best known for his

May 2014 Movie(s) On Our Radar

Read on to learn if Hollywood's first swing into Summer 2014 bring too many players to the game. Story by: Matt Cummings When we wrote our Most Anticipated List of 2014, it included April was an interesting month, filled with surprising hits ( God's Not Dead ), guaranteed winners ( Captain America: The Winter Soldier ) and several notable duds ( Need for Speed and Sabotage ).  But now, it's on to May and the beginning of the summer season, a time when Hollywood begins to play its big cards hoping for long lines and plenty of popcorn sales.  May 2013 saw the mammoth Iron Man 3 , while 2012 featured a little film called The Avengers , so 2014 arrives filled to the gills with several interesting titles worth mentioning.  Several appeared in our MOST ANTICIPATED LIST FOR 2014 , and it's great to finally see them arrive. The schedule includes a human spider, a 350 foot lizard, a witch, some mutants, and a sexually depraved police officer. The Amazing Spider-M

2014 Big Movie Questions

Big Movie Questions of 2014  By: Matt Cummings Read on to learn whether our Big Movie Questions of 2014 might need to be re-titled 'Top Movie Questions of 2015.' With 2013 in the books, we're continuing a tradition here at SJF by looking forward to the big movie questions of 2014. And while last year provided us with entertaining answers to the questions we posed back in February, 2014 looks to have just as many. Without any fanfare whatsoever, we now present the Big Movie Questions of 2014 . Is 2015 already eclipsing 2014? Take a look at 2015, and you'll see what could be the most impressive list of films to come in a single year: The Avengers: Age of Ultron , the as-yet-untitled Batman/Superman movie, Fast 7 , and Mission: Impossible are but a few. Moviegoers are salivating for these tentpole titles, while ignoring the potentially bigger releases of 2014, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier , Guardians of the Galaxy, Transformers: Age of E

Angelina Jolie As Maleficent. Horns And All

Disney's alt.fairy tale Maleficent starts shooting today and to mark the occasion in style, the studio has given everyone a free pass to the Magic Kingdom with special valet parking by Goofy. OK, they haven't, but they have released a stunning first look at the movie's title character, the magnificently moody villain as played by Angelina Jolie . Yes, the horns are still there. No, we're no longer sore about the valet parking thing. Jolie hardly needs help to look good but by the looks of things director Robert Stromberg, production designer on Alice In Wonderland and Avatar, is giving it to her anyway. And check out that gleam in her eye - doesn't that look rather dragon-y? Jolie has described Maleficent as more than the traditional villainess who'll transform into a dragon and hit "scorch" at the first sniff of a grievance. In short, it's Maleficent's journey to the place we found her in Sleeping Beauty. “I hope in the end you see a wom

Juno Temple Joins Maleficent

Juno Temple will play one of the three pixies taking care of Aurora in the live-action Disney fantasy film that re-imagines the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. Angelina Jolie is playing the title character in the fantasy that tells the story from the point of view of the fairy-witch who cursed Aurora to a permanent sleep on her 16th birthday. Robert Stromberg is directing. Elle Fanning already is on board as Aurora and Sharlto Copley is Stefan, the half-human and half-fairy bastard son of the human king. Also in the cast are I melda Staunton (Vera Drake), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter), Kenneth Cranham (Made in Dagenham), Sam Riley (Brighton Rock) and Lesley Manville (Another Year). Temple would join Staunton and Manville as the three pixie fairies in the classic fairy tale who are tasked with taking care of Aurora in the cottage in the woods. Temple will play Thistletwit, who -- like the other pixies, Knotgrass and Flittle -- is neglectful and superficial. The movie

Sharlto Copley In Talks To Join Maleficent

Sharlto Copley is in negotiations to play the male lead opposite Angelina Jolie in Disney’s Maleficent . He will play King Stefan in the live-action film, which tells the backstory of Sleeping Beauty and why the evil fairy (played by Jolie) cursed Princess Aurora in the first place. The film is scheduled to come out March 14, 2014. The news comes on the heels of Copley joining Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s Open Grave and closing his deal to play the villain in Spike Lee’s Oldboy, a remake of Park Chan-wook 2003′s Korean revenge thriller. Copley,  just finished work on District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium opposite Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Please Leave A Comment- Source- Deadline

Elle Fanning Could Be Your Sleeping Beauty In Maleficent

As the latest refurbished fairytale film " Maleficent " gears up to start shooting in June, we hear exciting news that "Super 8" star Elle Fanning is in talks to join the ranks of other Hollywood It-girls getting the royal treatment. The Disney film, which tells the children’s classic Sleeping Beauty from the evil witch’s point of view a la "Wicked," would pair up Fanning with Angelina Jolie , who is set to play the role of Maleficent. We think Elle would make the perfect fair-haired Princess Aurora; we can just imagine her now, wide-eyed, pricking her finger on a spinning wheel and collapsing delicately in a cloud of pink. But how does the Fanning-Jolie team stack up to some other incredibly attractive evil queen-beautiful princess pairings of late? 1. Lily Collins-Julia Roberts Lily Collins has the same innocent princess look as Elle Fanning. Trailers show "Mirror, Mirror" to be a cute, light-hearted take on Snow White, and according

Jon Favreau to Direct Magic Kingdom For Disney

Jon Favreau Got His Mickey Ears On Jon Favreau is in talks to direct Magic Kingdom , the Disney film with the premise that the attractions at the venerable theme park come to life. The studio set the project up nearly two years ago and got a draft by Battlestar Galactica's Ron Moore, but a new writer will be set and work on a new draft under Favreau.  Favreau will be signing a development deal, because the project will percolate while he works on other big scale studio films. He just completed Cowboys & Aliens , the DreamWorks/Universal co-production that stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford . Favreau will finish that film for release on July 29, 2011, and he is expected to re-team with Robert Downey Jr . for a third Iron Man . Magic Kingdom is being produced by Strike Entertainment partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, and while the studio has previously tapped theme park attractions for films like Pirates of the Caribbean , this is the first time it has created a movie
