EPISODE IV: A FAN'S HOPE Movie Review By: Matt C

COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN'S HOPE Movie Review
By: Matt C

COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN'S HOPE is a rousing celebration of geekery, but will general audiences accept it?

Be sure to check back,  we will have our interviews posted this weekend. To hold you over here are a few pictures from the Red Carpet.

Clark Gregg Interview From COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN'S HOPE Red Carpet-

The annual San Diego Comic-Con is like the church for geeks. If you’re reading this, then you probably are ‘in the know,’ meaning you’ve either heard of the once-a-year event, or have actually attended with the other 100,000 of us. In few other places in the world will you find such a gathering to celebrate film, pop culture, and of course comic books. That was the original intent in 1970, when the Con attracted only 500 people. Today, the four-day event occupies a massive presence around San Diego’s convention district, snagging traffic and leading many outsiders to gawk at the odd collection of Stormtroopers, superheroes, and scantily-dressed womenfolk that populate the event. COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN'S HOPE is both recognition of the event’s stature in popular society, and also a lesson in the way geekery is marketed. Director Morgan Spurlock (Supersize Me) weaves the film through the viewpoints of two aspiring artists, one comic book dealer, and two geeks as they attend the 2011 convention. We gain valuable lessons about the challenges which artists Eric Henson and Skip Harvey face as they submit their drawings in the hopes of landing a job with a major comic company. But the movie also celebrates the heart of Comic-Con as a place where memories are made, such as the story of James Darling, as he uses a Kevin Smith open-mike discussion to propose marriage to his girlfriend.

Spurlock has assembled a nice mix of real attendees, comic book artists, and self-admitted Hollywood geeks to tell his story. There are appearances by directors Joss Whedon (Avengers), Kevin Smith (Dogma) and Eli Roth (Hostel), who seem genuinely excited about sharing what Comic-Con means to them. Even actresses and personalities like Olivia Wilde, Candace Bailey, and Morgan Webb announce their love for the Con. These and other testimonials form a nice ribbon throughout the story and represent some of the funniest parts of the film. Spurlock keeps the film generally upbeat but isn’t afraid to highlight the opinions of some who are concerned that the Con has become too diverse and worry that Hollywood is using these events to test-market their attractions at the Con’s expense.

While not an unfiltered look, I genuinely liked Spurlock’s take and the film overall. The one question on many critics’ minds is whether the movie will connect with general moviegoers, who may never have heard of Comic-Con and might regard the costumes and strange attitudes of some to be part of an underground cult. Although it’s playing in limited release at the time of this posting, I strongly encourage you to see it. Hope is good fodder for those uneducated about Cons, it's genuinely funny, and even a little heartwarming. It summarizes the heart of ComiCon without becoming too pushy or propagandistic while making you feel like you’ve connected with real people.

But let’s not get carried away with the hugs and Cumbayas here: we geeks still prefer giant mash-up alien warfare and entire rooms of Slave Princess Leias posing for cameras. That's a geek's real heaven!

In The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side, and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!

This film has been rated PG by the MPAA for MILD ACTION, RUDE HUMOR AND SOME LANGUAGE.

Olivia Wilde Is The Third Person

Last week, the Post reported that Oscar winner Paul Haggis was writing a new movie about a New York party reporter, and that scoop quite naturally got nightlife writers buzzing: While Haggis has kept up an active social life since moving to New York, he's usually quite reticent with party reporters and certainly hasn't been "overheard asking numerous young party reporters about their experiences," as the Post reported. Last night, at the 2012 Revlon Concert for the Rainforest Fund, we grilled Haggis to find out what's what. "That story is bullshit. Bullshit," he said. Haggis is indeed prepping a movie called Third Person, which he hopes to shoot this August, but he's been writing it for years and claims that the party-reporting element is minimal. "It's about three story lines, three love stories, three relationships in three different cities that combine in a very odd way: New York, Paris, Rome. And so I wanted one of them to have a job in New York. So after writing the script, I thought, Oh, party reporting, that would be great. But literally, it's just that. The character is not based on anyone, or anything like that. Imagine, the Post not having the correct information!"

So who's been cast? "Liam Neeson is one of them, I can say that," Haggis revealed. "The woman he's in a relationship with, the party reporter, will be played by Olivia Wilde. That's the character. I can't tell you who else." Certainly, a woman like Wilde would have no trouble as a party reporter; who wouldn't want to talk to her? But ultimately, Haggis said, he's not hitting up all these events just to observe party reporters in their natural element. "I go to parties to go to parties! It's not for research. I just wanted to go to some premieres."

American Reunion Movie Review By: Matt C

American Reunion Movie Review
By: Matt C

Is American Reunion a welcomed return to classic American Pie, or a high school reunion that should never have happened?

There was a time when American Pie was known as one of the raunchiest films around. Not known for its cinematic mastery, Pie was new and exciting to audiences not used to seeing young boys ‘interacting’ with warm apple pies. Shannon Elizabeth’s topless scene was only part of an experience that seemed to redefine the entire genre. But time has a way of changing people’s minds, so when The Hangover became such an amazing success, franchises like Pie lost their luster. Sadly, American Reunion only strengthens my belief that the franchise is either no longer funny or wasn’t ever funny, and we were just trying to be nice about it. Any shred of story here, about how the gang gets together for a 13th year high school reunion, is utterly lost in gross humor, poor acting, and tired old sexual clich├ęs. Everyone is older, less funny, and worried about either their lack of sexual activity or the choices they made after high school. This attempt to make two separate movies, one raunchy and one coming-of-age, comes off feeling more like an after-school special than a franchise trying to grow out of its pubescent roots.

There are some funny moments, particularly between dad (Eugene Levy) and son Jim (Jason Biggs), and it's nice to see the gang all back (including a nice cameo or two), but Tara Reid (The Big Lebowski) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) seem strangely out of place. Neither seems very comfortable, their lines are way too serious for the overall tone of the film, and they really get in the way of any meaningful humor that this edition so desperately needed. Even the antics of Stiffler (Seann William Scott) seem tired – every movie of this genre seems to have a Stiffler in it nowadays.

The suggestion at film’s end is that the gang will reunify in future episodes to rekindle old friendships; I sure hope that doesn’t happen. I’m not sure we could stand the boredom of yet another raunchy, coming-of-age movie that fails to exist well in either genre. The Hangover never really strayed beyond its comfort zone, fearing it would take itself too seriously. That’s a lesson Reunion should have learned. Save your money for The Avengers.

Really A Mummy Reboot. Come On

Looks like someone at Universal took a gander at Sony re-booting the Spider-Man franchise after the last outing in 2007 and thought both, ‘Hhm… maybe we should tap that reboot reservoir...’ and, ‘Pah! 2007? Lightweights. We’ll up the ante and relaunch something that last saw cinemas in 2008!’ Hence today’s announcement that the studio has decided to reboot The Mummy.

The producers – including franchise veteran Sean Daniel – have decided that Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts is the man to dust off Imhotep and give him a new coat of sand and evil. "I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before," Spaihts tells Variety.

Stephen Sommers brought Universal's veteran Egyptian troublemaker back to life in 1999, after a classic Boris Karloff effort back in 1932 and a few remakes / spin-offs in the 1940s. Sommers cast Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in a comedy adventure that scored big at the box office. He pulled off the trick a second time in 2001 with The Mummy Returns. Both Sommers and Weisz passed on the third film, The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, which found Rob Cohen at the helm and Maria Bello taking over for Weisz. And don’t forget the 2002 spin-off The Scorpion King (though everyone, including us, is still trying to forget the cheap DVD sequels to that one.)

So now we wait and see what Spaihts does with the Mummy universe. Will Fraser’s Rick O’Connell still be present, even if the actor isn’t? Will Prometheus' Damon Lindelof be called in to write the second draft, with everyone denying that is has a direct connection with any other Mummy adventure? What? Could happen….
