War Dogs Trailer Starring @JonahHill & @Miles_Teller

Here is the official trailer for War Dogs,  directed by Todd Phillips and starring Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Ana de Armas and Bradley Cooper.

Based on a true story, “War Dogs” follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami during the first Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

Television Review: #Daredevil Season 2

Netflix scores high marks for their sophomore superhero series.

Review by Matt Cummings

Ask anyone these days if we're suffering from too much superhero stuff (television, movies, t-shirts, images on soup), and you're likely to get a wide variety of answers. The truth is, Hollywood is still trying to figure this thing out itself, falling loudly in some cases (see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). Even Netlfix has failed (see the boring Jessica Jones). But if there's one thing being done right, it's Daredevil, as season 2's entry has proven with its terrific storytelling, stellar performances, and visceral action.

Set a few months after the events of last season, Lawyer Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and his partner Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) have been growing their law firm with an eclectic mix of clients. But that's all about to change when a shadowy figure begins to murder rival gangs, leaving destruction in his wake. Determined to protect Hell's Kitchen from collateral damage, Daredevil sets out to identify the culprit, who some have termed The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). But soon Daredevil gets more than he bargained for, as the two clash over ideologies. Faced with a murderous psychopath who won't stop until his family is avenged, Murdock must walk a fine line even as his personal life begins to come apart as a result of his night job.

Simply put, Daredevil is a terrific spectacle of murder and graying loyalties. It deftly pursues the truth about vengeance, that violence spawns more violence and that the line between it and pursuing justice is razor thin. The answers about what happens when people are pushed to their limits isn't comforting, but that's the point here. But it takes great actors to move beyond the mayhem and add a human element to the discussion, which Creator Drew Goddard deftly achieves with one of the best on television.

Bernthal turns in a mesmerizing performance as Frank Castle/The Punisher, allowing the grief over his dead family to spill out onto the screen. We actually feel for him as he describes to Daredevil the plight which has brought them together. This is expertly displayed throughout the series, particularly in an episode in which Punisher engages in a bit of philosophizing with Daredevil, who is chained to a chimney. That sequence is better than any dialogue in the lumbering BvS, clearly spelling out each side's beliefs with some masterful banter courtesy from Goddard and his writing team.

Cox's performance has seen the greatest improvement: he's more relaxed (and therefore more confident) in the role, but he's still eclipsed by some of the best performances on television, including Bernthal and a familiar face from Season 1. His love interest (Deborah Ann Woll) and Henson are solidly great in every episode. They form the decent side of Murdock's conscience, passionate about their defense of The Punisher but wary of his intentions when he escapes prison. But just when you think this series is settling down for a predictable conclusion, Elodie Young arrives as the stunningly feisty Elektra, whom Murdock shares a deep history. And once again, it spawns a worthy discussion over whether humans can pursue justice without losing themselves in the process. For Elektra and Punisher, that answer is a solid no, each wrapped in their own desires for violence and ready to rationalize their way through each act.

For a series that's not directed by the same person each time, Goddard executes the world Daredevil with tremendous results. There's only a few times when things don't quite work as well as you'd like, but that's squashed by the best action sequences on television today. It's rough and tumble throughout, but hardly ever feels overly orchestrated. Still, it's messy enough that I'd encourage you not to show kids under 13, as there's plenty of headshots, blood, and other nasty ways our characters dispense justice or punishment.

If there's one issue I have with the series is Netflix's insistence to not directly associate themselves with the Cinematic Universe. Every time there's a chance for name-dropping, we get frustratingly limited references to The Incident (the NY attack from 2012's The Avengers) and never, ever any mention of those characters. It's unknown why this is happening, but let's see it end soon. Jessica Jones featured a distant Stark/Avengers Tower; why not extend at least that courtesy to Daredevil? But when you have a series this visceral and powerfully small-scale, it's a minor point. Daredevil Season 2 easily establishes itself as top dog in a growing television universe that still can't largely get it right. Unlike other series that are totally binge-worthy, I'd advise taking your time here, as these 13 episodes should be savored, just like the fine cuts of steak enjoyed by a character in the show. It's a delicious meal that demands your attention and threatens to break your face if you don't. Message received - just let my family live...

Daredevil Season 2 is playing on Netflix.

Movie Review: MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2

RAMA is Back

A weak sequel

From comedic standpoint, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 is not as strong and definitely as effective as the first film which gave Nia Vardalos her Oscar nomination for best original screenplay category. But this sequel does have enough family antics and lovey-dovey romance to keep the fans from wondering why they’re not enjoying this as much as they had hoped.

It’s been 14 years since the first film and not much has changed in the Portokalos family except for the fact that Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) now have a teenage daughter named Paris (Elena Kampouris) who’s considering going to a college located far far away from her Greek family, and I don’t blame her, I too came from a culture that’s family-oriented, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it can get overwhelming for a young person who feels that the world is much bigger than just the neighborhood she grew up in. Meanwhile, Toula’s parents find out that their marriage license was never signed, they were never legally married and that is why another big fat Greek wedding is in order.

For the fans, it’s nice to see the gang back together after all these years, familiar faces, familiar characters, the story does remind us why we loved the first film. There are cases out there in which the sequel may have arrived way too late, like “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" but in this case, I think it makes sense that it took this long for MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 to arrive, because if they ever made the third installment, they could then focus it on Paris’ wedding.

Again as a comedy, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 is rather weak, mainly because there’s nothing fresh about it, no surprises, and many of the Greek-centric jokes fall flat, I’m sure Nia Vardalos tried to throw anything she could into the mix but there’s only so much you can do until they get old. This whole overbearing family that somewhat breathes down your neck can work once or twice but it gets played out in MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, as if that’s the only thing it’s got going for them.

I also feel the Paris going to college part of the story is much more interesting but since Nia has to juggle that with Toula’s parents trying to get married aspect, so the whole relationship between Paris and her parents is only halfheartedly explored. Audiences will be divided over MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, some would wish they have their own Greek family that cares about them, some would be thankful they don’t have such family, but all of them would agree that the first film was better by a mile. But you gotta give credit where credit’s due, this franchise that Nia Vardalos created gave these Greek actors a platform to showcase their talent, otherwise you wouldn’t see them much in anything else.

Sarah Silverman Joins Steve Carell In Battle Of The Sexes

With Emma Stone and Steve Carell already at the top of the cast, tennis drama Battle Of The Sexes is now filling in its key supporting players. Andrea Riseborough and Elisabeth Shue signed up recently, and the latest addition is Sarah Silverman.

The film, which boasts a script by Simon Beaufoy, will chronicle the rivalry between former tennis pro Bobby Riggs (Carell) and his 29-year-old opponent Billie Jean King (Stone), who hit the court for a legendary match in 1973 that (it was claimed) would establish if a female pro could ever beat a male in the sport. The event drew a huge audience of more than 50 million Americans, eager to see who would triumph.

Silverman will play Gladys Heldman, the founder of the magazine World Tennis, and a staunch supporter of King and other female players in the early 1970s.

Stone and Carell previously shared the screen in Crazy, Stupid Love, and Battle Of The Sexes also represents another reunion: Little Miss Sunshine’s Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (who worked with Carell on that film) are directing. Fox Searchlight is providing the backing, and the film should be shooting soon for a release in 2017.

First Look At #WonderWoman & Her Clan

EW scored the first image from the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

Themyscira is a hidden island where Amazon women of Greek myth have thrived for centuries, living in harmony and free to self-govern away from the gaze of man. It’s also, of course, the birthplace of Wonder Woman, who after years of false starts, is finally a movie star. With a much heralded introduction in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is now a cornerstone in Warner Bros.’ DC Comics multiverse, with a crucial role in the first Justice League movie (out November 2017), and the center of her own long-awaited film, which will hit screens next June.

Directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster), Wonder Woman will be an origin story illustrating the transformation of a young Princess Diana into the greatest female warrior of all time.

She will need some help getting there, though. Preparing her for a world of men are three regal women: Diana’s mother, Queen Hippolyta (Gladiator’s Connie Nielsen), and her two military aunts – General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Antiope’s lieutenant, Menalippe (Force Majeure’s Lisa Loven Kongsli). This trio of immortals is responsible for both raising and training Diana — the only child on this estrogen heavy isle — but they don’t always agree. Hippolyta, a revolutionary leader, longs to shelter her beloved daughter from the outside world, but Antiope, the Amazon responsible for Diana’s training, wants to prepare her. “She is the only child they raised together,” says Jenkins, calling from outside London, where she is deep into the film’s production. “And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.”

To create Themyscira, Jenkins and her team used exotic islands off the coasts of Italy and southern China to enhance the otherworldliness of scenes filmed on Italy’s Amalfi coast. Still, designing a fantastical place proved challenging. Every decision about it, she says, came back to a central question: “How would I want to live that’s badass?”

Adds producer Charles Roven, “Themyscira is influenced by the Greek but it’s clearly more then that,” he says. “It’s a place that has the ‘you’ve never been to’ kind of feel. But once you’re there you’re not so sure you really want to leave so fast.”

That uniqueness extended to how the Amazons look, too. “To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men,” Jenkins says of the women’s battle wear. “It should be different. It should be authentic and real – and appealing to women.” Jenkins and her costume designer, Lindy Hemming (The Dark Knight), crafted a look that showed off the women’s ripped shoulders and toned legs, in outfits that looked practical but that still featured the tropes of the comic book, in particular the braces on their wrists and, yes, even the high heels.

Jenkins defends the impractical footwear. “It’s total wish-fulfillment,” she says, adding that the warriors have flats for heavy fighting. “I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time – the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”

Wonder Woman is slated to debut on June 23, 2017.

Peter Serafinowicz Cast As The Tick

Ben Edlund's The Tick is making its return to television via a new pilot being produced for Amazon Studios, and now we know who will be playing the man in blue: British actor Peter Serafinowicz.

Serafinowicz is assuming the role previously voiced by Townsend Coleman in the 1994 animated series (which ran for three seasons) and played by Patrick Warburton (back as an executive producer for this version) in the 2001 live action version, which, unfortunately, lasted only nine episodes).

In this new pilot, The Tick is suffering from amnesia when he is reunited with Arthur (Griffin Newman), his sidekick, and the two begin to fight evil again. The only other character announced so far is Arthur's sister, Dot (Valorie Curry).

Serafinowicz' past credits include Guardians Of The Galaxy and Shaun Of The Dead. Additionally, he voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

#MargotRobbie Cast As Tonya Harding

It may have happened all the way back in the 1990s (kids, ask your parents), but the saga of competitive ice skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan still stands as one of the most memorable sporting scandals in modern history. Now Margot Robbie wants to bring Harding's side of the story to the screen in I, Tonya.

Harding was originally seen as a plucky underdog who rose from a rough, poverty-stricken childhood in Portland to become one of the top figure skaters in the United states. She became the first woman to complete the triple axel jump in big competitions and emerged victorious at the 1991 US Figure Skating Championships, going on to place second at the World Championships.

Then came the run up to the 1994 Olympics, where Harding conspired with her then-husband Jeff Gillooly to attack rival Nancy Kerrigan during qualifying rounds at the US Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, part of the selection process for the American Olympic team. Gillooly and co-conspirators Shawn Eckardt and Shane Stant figured out a plan of attack and Stant clubbed Kerrigan in the right knee, looking to break her leg. But she ended up merely bruised and part of the incident was captured on camera. Despite what would become known as The Whack Heard Round The World, Kerrigan still won a place on the Olympic team. She ended up with a silver medal and Harding, consumed by the scandal, placed eighth. She was eventually banned for life.

Steven Rogers has done the research for this one, talking with both Harding and Gillooly, and wrote the script that Robbie is now using. She's on the hunt for a director and is planning to produce and star as Harding.

Coming Spring 2016, Who’s Jenna…? is a riotously funny but super sweet rom-com about a man whose new girlfriend (AOFF award winner Tracey Birdsall) looks suspiciously like a famous porn star.

Jonathan Burke (Bill Sorvino), a successful financial advisor, starts dating Jenna Casey (Birdsall), an accomplished lawyer. Jonathan’s best friend, Andy Roma (Joseph D’Onofrio) is convinced she looks exactly like a famous adult film star.

Not only does Jonathan have to deal with his friend’s nonsense, but he also has to juggle his relationship with his boss (Garry Pastore), who is possibly black-mailing him, and is Jenna’s brother in-law.

A case of mistaken identity creates a whirling storm of comical chaos in Jonathan’s world.
Joining Birdsall are The Soprano’s Vincent Pastore, Bill Sorvino, Joseph D’Onofrio, Vic Dibitetto and Garry Pastore.

Some fun cameos are in tow, too.

Who’s Jenna…?, written and directed by Thomas Baldinger, is a 624 Productions production.

Fathom Events is back with their Met: Live in HD 2016 series!

Win tickets so see MADAMA BUTTERFLY On April 2 – 12:55 p.m in Houston at AMC Willowbrook 24.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY (Puccini)
The title character of Madama Butterfly—a young Japanese geisha who clings to the belief that her arrangement with a visiting American naval officer is a loving and permanent marriage—is one of the defining roles in opera. The story triggers ideas about cultural and sexual imperialism for people far removed from the opera house, and film, Broadway, and popular culture in general have riffed endlessly on it. The lyric beauty of Puccini’s score, especially the music for the thoroughly believable lead role, has made Butterfly timeless.

Movie Review: 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'

After a rough start, BVSDOJ serves up a powerful emotional punch.

Review by Matt Cummings

For a film that has gained so much attention since its year-long delay, expectations for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice couldn't be greater and perhaps more unrealistic. That's perhaps Warner Bros' fault for concocting a tale near the end - rather than at the beginning - of a universe with so much promise. And while the emotional punch of Act 3 is profound, some of the build up is clunky and its mythology doesn't have time to properly develop.

It's been nearly two years since Superman (Henry Cavill) and General Zod (Michael Shannon) destroyed much of Metropolis, leaving many to ponder their role in a world where gods do exist. To some like Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) and even Batman (Ben Affleck), such forces represent a true evil that must be wiped out. But others aren't so sure, including a mysterious woman (Gal Gadot) and the reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams). Ready to battle the most powerful man on Earth, The Dark Knight sets in motion a plan for an epic showdown without considering that he might be a pawn in Luthor's greater scheme.

Let's put a couple of early concerns to rest: Affleck is terrific as Batman, Gadot is pure beast as Wonder Woman, and the Doomsday appearance is as epic as anything Marvel has conjured up. Affleck easily slips in to the role, mixing the billionaire playboy with the gritty realism of a brutal warrior who won and lost much in 20 years of crime fighting. And he is a pure badass here, perhaps the best Batman ever, not just because he delivers the most powerful punches but because of the emotional change he undergoes as the film progresses. Without giving anything away, it's clear that Wayne doesn't understand who his true enemy is and makes clear mistakes as he chooses to engage Superman. That's the mark of human error, something our heroes aren't supposed to embody, and yet it works so well here. I have zero worry about Affleck now, his presence is as evocative as anything we've seen this year.

Gadot is perhaps the most pleasant surprise, a thoroughly agreeable mix that should win over a lot of people who worried when Snyder cast her. And yet, Wonder Woman's arc is frustratingly inadequate: by the end we know nothing of her intentions, how she became apparently immortal, and why she remained on the sidelines until now. All of these promise to be revealed when her origin movie arrives in 2017, but it will weigh on you to see it played out here. But make no mistake: Gadot is a winner, ready to assume her position as the final member of DC's Trinity.

Other returning players like Adams and Lawrence Fishburne as Perry White are pitch perfect, while Jeremy Irons as the new snarky Alfred could give Michael Caine's version a run for his money. Then there's Eisenberg, who will either be viewed as a rip off of Jack Nicholson's Joker or another masterful bit of casting. Luthor is immediately unbalanced with Eisenberg reveling in such a meaty role, vacillating between brilliant scientist and mass murderer at the flip of a switch. He acts as the notorious chessmaster, ready to destroy the world in order to keep Superman and others like him from overtaking the planet. This doesn't happen because Luthor is an unbalanced hero, but a psychopath just waiting to become unglued. His will probably be the most debated aspect of BvS, which I'm sure its director might not have intended.

And yes, there are appearances by other metahumans, but they aren't around long enough for us to get a better idea about them. All we know is that Luthor has been studying them, but like Wonder Woman we have no idea why they're here or if their purpose is friendly or merely disinterested. Issues like these plague BVSDOJ, adding perhaps the final chapter to a debate that's been around awhile: should DC have made separate origin stories ala Marvel instead of cramming several heroes into a longer movie? There's bound to be valid reasons on both sides, but consider if The Empire Strikes Back - typically considered the best Star Wars movie and sequel ever - had been made first and not A New Hope. BVSDOJ feels like huge chunks of story are waiting for their own origins, which would make sense provided they had already been made. A movie like The Avengers would have suffered horribly under these conditions, and it's likely that curious moviegoers will be largely lost as these various permutations make their appearances, some in confusing dream moments like The Flash (Ezra Miller). Still, Director Zack Snyder's nearly insurmountable challenge here - to rapidly expand this universe in the opposite direction - is at one point bigger and more epic than any Marvel movie, certainly more poignant, and definitely heart-wrenching as well.

A decade from now, fans new to the League-verse will most likely watch BVSDOJ as the penultimate - rather than the first - tale leading up to the two-part Justice League, during which time Snyder's expansive, sometimes brilliant, but frustratingly exhaustive effort might be better appreciated. For now, it's likely to divide audiences familiar with the story and alienate those who took a chance based on the big fight sequences so prominently displayed in the trailers. Either way, it's certain to make an immediate and big splash as word of its stunning reveals spreads.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality and has a runtime of 153 minutes.

Movie Review: 'City of Gold'

The foodie doc City of Gold resonates with the flair of a great underground LA restaurant.

Review by Matt Cummings

No matter where you live - outskirts of town, Downtown Wherever, or in the barrio - there are bound to be special places where you eat. For LA food critic Jonathan Gold, it's much more than reporting on the quality of the meal but plugging into the culture of his hometown. This is where the IFC documentary City of Gold finds itself, existing as far more than food criticism or consumption, but on popular criticism itself.

Pulitzer Prize winner and LA Weekly critic Jonathan Gold is as much the subject here as the food he remarks on, gaining adoration from both fans and restaurant owners for his fairness and amiable personality. He samples the most diverse lineup of food you've ever seen (or eaten), most of which is inaccessible to a majority of people living in our country. Beginning as a copy reader for the paper, Gold is the perfect encapsulation of a populist who grew up 'in the system', eating at every restaurant (strip mall to fashionable spread) along a 15-mile stretch of Pico Avenue as he began his writing career. Along the way, he became a sort of local cultural icon, drawing on inspiration from the food he was reviewing. Director Laura Gabbert weaves his story with that of LA's history as Gold misses deadlines and drives his beat up pickup truck to new dining experiences that have become must-reads as a means for planning next week's dinner out.

Using a variety of cameras including drones to capture some very nice POV's of the city, Gabbert is here to celebrate both the diversity of LA and the food that naturally arrives when so many diverse peoples gather in one place. Like the rotund Gold, her style is friendly and unassuming. She's here to capture the moment not remark on it. An aboriginal whose early work included writing about the hip-hop of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, Gold samples hole-in-the-wall locales, while dispelling the rumors about his city's perceived monolithic culture. There's apparently a deep history of food there that isn't being made for tourists or the elite, and it's Gold's job to uncover them.

Seeking testimonials from local restaurateurs on Gold's importance, Gabbert lets his story and that of the sprawling region expand, which apparently has left its residents in a quandry over what their city is becoming. Gold seems like one of the few who put that change in perspective, using the commonality of food to make sense of it all. Some of the ways that Gabbert gets to those points can feel disjointed and take way too long to finish, but the deeper message is clear: every town has its hidden culinary treasures, and she hopes you will seek them out.

City of Gold might not make much sense to those who live in places were commercial eateries dominate, but its journey into what criticism means in the day of Twitter and Yelp is as insightful as the wonderfully diverse food Gold reviews. Watching City of Gold makes you want to drive down to your local strip mall and take a good look at the mom-and-pop places in the hopes of finding that next great meal. Perhaps you've already found it, and if so then Gabbert's work is done.

City of Gold is Rated R for some language and has a runtime of 96 minutes.
