First TV Spot For Vin Diesel’s Riddick

You can guess what you’re going to get from a Riddick promo at this stage in the game – heck, any stage in any game, given the presence of Vin Diesel’s tough-nut Furyan. Lots of snarling bad guys, our equally growly antihero and plenty of monsters. A new TV spot full of all of that is below, where they're playing for blood. Because apparently they've run out of straws. And poker chips. And chocolate coins.

Richard B. Riddick, this time around, is left for dead on a planet with unique challenges and no small number of dangerous predatory beasts. As if that weren't enough, he also has to face a small swarm of bounty hunters looking to cash in by taking him down dead or alive. With a storm on the horizon and more creature trouble for everyone involved, it’ll be another fight to the death for Riddick and anyone else left standing…

Joining Diesel in David Twohy’s latest are Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, and Nolan Gerard Funk.

Win Tickets To An Advance Screening Pacific Rim In Sacramento

Win Tickets To An Advance Screening For Pacific Rim. The screening is on Jul 8, 2013 7:30 pm in AMC Metreon 16 with IMAX in San Francisco.

Pacific Rim is an upcoming 2013 American science fiction film directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by del Toro and Travis Beacham. The film is set in the near future where soldiers pilot giant mecha into battle against invading giant monsters who have risen from a portal beneath the ocean.

Del Toro intended the film to have an "incredibly airy and light feel", in contrast to the "super-brooding, super-dark, cynical summer movie". The director focused on "big, beautiful, sophisticated visuals" and action that would satisfy an adult audience, but has stated his "real hope" is to introduce the kaiju and mecha genres to a generation of children.

2013 Big Movie Questions - Q2 Report

We ask the big movie questions and seek film insight for the second half of 2013.
By: Matt Cummings

As Quarter 2 comes to a close, we look back at some movie questions and make bold new predictions.

The year has certainly been an interesting one for Hollywood: a terrible Quarter 1 gave rise to a much-improved Quarter 2. In January, we postulated several questions that are beginning to bear fruit. If you didn't read our Quarter 1 Report, we'll forgive you...this time. We've added those and updated our thoughts on Quarter 2. Enjoy.

  • Did audiences stand in line to see Arnold and Stallone? No - If October 18th's The Tomb or The Plan (or whatever it's called now) also fails to attract success, it should be evidence that both heroes might need to hang it up.

  • Did 2012's feeble box office continue into 2013? Sadly, yes. Combined losses exceeded 30%, until the biggest June ever came around and sliced that down to 9%.

  • Was a Nolan Man of Steel as good as a Nolan Dark Knight? We loved the Superman origin story, although many critics did not. There's usually a difference between moviegoers and the critical opinion, but to see Man of Steel obliterate the box office, and now stand perched at #2 overall, tells me that films draw people (or not) regardless of their hype.

  • Did Star Trek: Into Darkness live up to what fans needed and deserved? Yes and no. We absolutely loved the film, as it returned us to heady days of The Original Series. Strong character development, excellent casting - including the arrival of Benedict Cumberbatch - and expert direction from JJ Abrams restored our faith. Unfortunately, moviegoers didn't agree and the film could be considered a disappointment by Labor Day. When a film released in March is still beating your big Summer flick, something is definitely wrong.
With those answered, here are some big questions that continue to burn a hole in our heads and keep us up until all hours:

  • Will horror films actually be good this year? Sure, Mama was an early financial surprise, but can the genre actually be inventive again? We're so obsessed with the Torture Porn of Saw that Hollywood has seemingly forgotten how to make scary/creepy without bimbos, boobs, and bondage. Under normal circumstances that combination works in the privacy of my home or dive motel, but horror has been perverted into an unappealing and predictable version of itself. Things don't look promising: Dark Skies saw an early exit, and yet another Paranormal Activity flick is due out this year. However, The Conjuring looks plain frightening and could surprise many. Can we ever return to classic creepy without the ultra-violence of Torture Porn?

  • How much more money will Sci-Fi films make than other genres in 2013? The early answer is not as much as we thought. Oblivion failed. After Earth was pathetic. Star Trek disappointed. That leaves Pacific Rim and Elysium to make up the difference. Honestly, we can't see that happening, given their tightly-specific genres. There's also the underrated Ender's Game and the George Clooney space survival film Gravity. I'm still excited about all of these, but it's clear that moviegoers have had their fill of Science Fiction/Sci-Fi (yes, there is a difference).

  • Can Thor: The Dark Worlds match up quality- and receipts-wise to Iron Man 3 and the gargantuan The Avengers? Nothing matched the perfection of 2012's superhero BBQ get-together. When your film strikes billion-dollar gold, it's nearly impossible to expect a repeat performance, especially if what's coming isn't mega-superhero-mashup. "Phase Two" has already seen the mega-hit Iron Man 3, although opinion is decidedly mixed as to its outcome. Thor might be able to meet Man of Steel numbers, but we're not sure if it can approach Iron Man 3. Still, it's clear that Marvel is surrounding these films with creative teams and competent people; Hemsworth and Downey Jr are perfect as Thor and Stark respectively, so we're cautiously optimistic that Mjolnir will soar once again.

  • Did risky films like Oz The Great and Powerful, GI Joe: Retaliation, and World War Z endear themselves to audiences? Again, the answer was mixed. Oz and WWZ absolutely brought audiences - each has remained on the top 10 through the Summer, with Oz holding down a surprising #3. Retaliation, while a marked improvement over Rise of Cobra, failed to keep its #10 hold past June 30. Bad press, a 9-month delay, and the death of Duke didn't help. While not the Battleship/John Carter-like domestic bombs of last summer, I wonder whether Hollywood will complete a follow-up to Retaliation, or let this thing die as it probably should.

  • And what about the similarly-risky Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Lone Ranger, and The Wolverine? I use the word 'risky' with Fire because of its release date. The original made over $400 million because it was an uncontested release in March. With a Quarter 3 arrival that's not filled with many sure-fire hits, Fire could have held the box office for weeks had it seen a proper release. And while we liked Ranger, it's well-known that westerns don't attract moviegoers, regardless of who's in it. As for The Wolverine, we're concerned about the lack of interest and its stand-alone nature to the rest of Fox's Marvel series. This could be the bomb we've been waiting for, but with Actor Hugh Jackman promising to have shirt torn off by Scene 3, ladies could single-handedly keep it afloat. At this point, it's anyone's guess.

  • Will the Quarter 3 challenger please stand up? Honestly, there are few titles between July-September that seem ready to command the market. Will we see another rapid decline for the industry during that time, only to be rescued in the last one by Fire and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug?

With box office numbers way down from 2012, and these huge questions lingering for some of the most anticipated and well-financed films of the year, we could see yet another decline for Hollywood that will depend on a strong fourth quarter to rescue it once again. How this and our other big questions pan out depends on many factors Either way, we'll be here to report the results.

What are your big movie questions for the rest of the year? Comment below and get involved in the conversation!

MACHINIMA Picks Up VIGILANTE DIARIES

MACHINIMA PICKS UP FIRST EPISODE OF CHRISTIAN SESMA WEB SERIES: VIGILANTE DIARIES.

Mega-Gaming Site YouTube Channel Features Premiere Episode of Chill’s Groundbreaking Series

Machinima, the premier network for gamers across the globe, has begun to showcase the first installment of Vigilante Diaries—feature film director Christian Sesma’s explosive new web series starring Jason Mewes—on its YouTube Channel. Machinima’s showcase of the episode will significantly expand the program’s reach, aiding the director’s crowd-funding campaign on social video website Chill (http://www.chill.com/vd) to earn $50,000 by July 25th. Whether or not Sesma creates new episodes of the series depends on fan support.

Featuring an in-your face performance by Jason Mewes (CLERKS, DOGMA, JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK), Vigilante Diaries combines high-octane action-comedy, violence, gore and gratuitous sex with a snappy, graphic novel sensibility. Mewes plays documentary filmmaker Michael Hanover, who turns his camera to the dark underworld of vigilante justice. As he records the exploits of “The Vigilante” and his right-hand man “The Kid,” he is thrust headfirst into the middle of the story he is documenting. Taking down drug lords, mafia kingpins and getting some action from "the twins," Hanover must learn to adapt to this depraved world. With no shortage of blood, gore, sex, and first-person shooter action sequences, Vigilante Diaries promises to be the series that hardcore gamers, graphic novel and thriller fans have been hungering for.

“Paul Sloan (the creator), Mewes and I are totally pleased with our partners, who not only have given us a broadcast platform on Chill but allowed us to tap into Machinima’s huge viewership,” says Sesma, who also produced the series under his production company Seskri Produktionz. “I’m a big fan of the site and I couldn’t think of a better way to build on our core audience at Chill than to be able to showcase our kick-ass series on YouTube…and show episode One for free no less.”

Machinima, “the world’s most powerful gaming network,” provides comprehensive gaming-focused programming to the coveted 18-34-year-old male demographic. With the number-one entertainment channel on YouTube, their global reach extends to over 191 million unique gamers. Machinima videos garnered an incredible combined 2.2 billion views in March 2013.

Sesma has shot two episodes of the show and has four more written and ready to go. Fans of Vigilante Diaries can help ensure the show’s livelihood by purchasing the first two episodes for $4.99 on Chill (http://www.chill.com/vd). The website allows indie filmmakers to showcase and crowd- fund their projects. Chill is also offering fans the opportunity to purchase Vigilante Diaries “extras” including the opportunity to direct a scene from an upcoming episode, have a walk-on role in the show, or play Call of Duty with Jason Mewes.

“We teamed up with Chill because we didn’t want any third parties messing with our vision for Vigilante Diaries,” Sesma explains. “We wanted to give our audience what they want…a digital graphic novel love letter with everything we (Sesma, Sloan and Mewes) think is cool. No rating, no rules, just over-the-top genre content that you wouldn’t normally be able to see on the web.”

Palm Springs native Christian Sesma is at the vanguard of a new generation of Latino filmmakers. Sesma debuted his first short film CYCLES at the Palm Springs Short Film Festival in 2004. Since then he’s directed five other features: teen thriller 6:30 (SIX-THIRTY), sophomore horror effort ON BLOODY SUNDAY (Warner Bros.) His third breakout feature SHOOT THE HERO (with Mewes, Samantha Lockwood, Danny Trejo and Nic Nac) world premiered at Palm Springs Film Fest. I’M NOT LIKE THAT NO MORE (with Paul Rodriguez) premiered at HBO’S New York Latino Film. He recently wrapped production on the Sci-fi/horror mash-up LOST TIME, which stars Luke Goss, Robert Davi, Lin Shaye and Rochelle Vallese. He has two more features slated for production in 2013: THE NIGHTCREW with Premiere Entertainment and AWOL starring Goss, Bokeem Woodbine and The Rza.

Vigilante Dairies is directed/produced by Christian Sesma, written/created by Paul Sloan and executive produced by Brian Norgard, Marc Hustvedt, and Jason Mewes. The series stars Mewes, Sloan, Kevin L. Walker and Jacqueline Lord; Anthony J. Ricket Epstein is editor; original music is composed by Michael John Mollo.

The Way, Way Back Review. Wants To Be The Independent Comedy That Can. Unfortunately, It's Not.

The Way, Way Back Review
By: MattInRC

The Nat Faxon/Jim Rash independent comedy The Way, Way Back tries to evoke the days of summer, when teenage love is in the air and the familiar sounds of swimming pools and family vacations overtake the agenda. Sadly, there's not much more we get from this film, which has all the best intentions but misses badly in several important ways.

The teenager Duncan (Liam James) and his mother Pam (Toni Collette, 8 1/2 Women) are headed to a beach house for the summer, along with Pam's new boyfriend Trent (Steve Carrell, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World). Duncan is a typical 14-year-old boy who's been shattered by divorce: he's shy, reclusive, and social awkward. His wardrobe yells out of touch, and his poor posture sees him constantly staring at the ground. When the trio arrive, they meet the sexually ferocious Betty (Allison Janey, The West Wing series) and her daughter Katy (Ava Deluca-Verley), who doesn't subscribe to the drama-queen SOP of Duncan's sister Steph (Zoe Levin). Pam and Trent spend their evenings getting drunk with Trent's friends Kip (Rob Cordry, Warm Bodies) and his wife Joan (Amanda Peet, The Whole Ten Yards), while Duncan's foisted off on the 9-year-old lazy-eyed Star Wars collector (River Alexander). While on a journey of self-discovery, Duncan stumbles upon the aging theme park Water Wizz and the gregarious Owen (Sam Rockwell, Seven Psychopaths), who gives him a job. As his self-confidence begins to improve, Duncan and Katy get closer, while Trent and Pam go through a painful breakup, leading to an early close to Duncan's summer. But before leaving, he must tie up several loose ends before the memory of his experiences fade away with the summer evening.

Back is supposed to be a character-driven comedy, complete with the requisite quirky characters (of which it has many), but its casting and story fail to assemble correctly into anything memorable. Carrel is (once again) oddly suited to the role of dramatic lead, failing to develop his character beyond simple jerk-womanizer status. Secondly, the idea of basing most of the story at a water park located within a beach town seems superfluous to say the least. Who in their right mind would spend their summer at a water park, when an entire ocean is nearby? And no offense, but Duncan is not a good-looking dude, and yet the cute and strangely-talkative Katy finds him a suitable catch? This 'Seth Rogan-ism' is not only unrealistic, but leads to the inevitable final kiss before Duncan's unplanned departure. If only real life benefited us ugly dudes in such ways.

However, there are bright spots here: Rockwell is his usual hilarious self, content to dance across the screen with funny one-liners aimed squarely at whoever stands in his way. He's the anchor to the story, a gateway between Duncan's unsatisfying family life and the one he's building at Water Wizz. Collette makes a believable portrayal of a mother trapped by her present situation, even though she knows Trent's friends fail to accept her. We can all see in her the chance we want to break out of our skin when something feels wrong, which humanizes her character in a way that no one other than Rockwell can match in the film. When she and Rockwell are out of scene, Back is a mostly uneven effort, failing to establish any connection to Duncan's growing relationship with Katy or the continued dysfunction of Trent's cohorts. This isn't a disaster on the scale of Friend, but Faxon and Rash could have done a lot better. In the end, its big dreams of becoming an instantly-identifiable coming of age flick turns into a huge opportunity missed.

The Way, Way Back wants to be 2012's Moonrise Kingdom, perhaps the best independent film of the second decade. Unfortunately, its weak plot fails to capture the true joy of summer love and the pain of family break ups, settling instead on a story that's soft on the eyes but unfulfilling on the bottom line. This is decent date night material, but don't count on anything more from it. The Way, Way Back is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 103 minutes.

New Featurette From The Wolverine " A Ronin Story"

Ahead of the release of The Wolverine, there's a new featurette explaining the film's storyline and take on the character, with special reference to his resemblance to a Japanese ronin, or masterless samurai. Take a look below for a hint of what we can expect from the movie.

This story, set after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, sees Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) "more isolated than you've ever seen" following the death (by Wolverine) of Jean Grey. An old friend, Yashida (Hal Yamanouchi) sends an envoy to find him, and offers Wolverine an end to his healing factor and endless life. But there are more dangers in Japan than his own existential angst, so things are never going to be easy for the metal-boned mutant.

The Wolverine also stars Will Yun Lee, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, Svetlana Khodchenkova and Hiroyuki Sanada, with James Mangold directing. Please Leave A Comment- Source-Empire Read more...

New Lovelace Movie Poster

If the words 'Deep Throat' evoke images of shady men in car parks, congratulations, you are officially safe for work. If they conjure more - how to put this? - salty images, that's probably because of Linda Boreman and her career in porno flicks. This new poster for Lovelace shows Amanda Seyfried as Linda Boreman, aka Linda Lovelace, and the film's full complement of period peacocks

Appearing alongside Seyfried are Juno Temple, Adam Brody, Wes Bentley, Chloë Sevigny and James Franco. But dominating proceedings is Peter Sarsgaard's Chuck Traynor, Boreman's domineering husband and the creepy svengali who guided a career in skin flicks until she eventually gave up in favour of campaigning anti-pornography work.

If the poster's '70s period costumes and disco aesthetic calls to mind Boogie Nights, that may not be entirely accidental. Expect a bittersweet take on an unusually lived life.

As the first-look still from Lovelace showed, this biopic will focus on both sides of Boreman's life, including the sweaty mechanics of the low-budget pornos she worked on. Be warned, and think twice before you take your gran along.
