Soundtrack Review: #JohnWickChapter2

John Wick: Chapter 2 - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack elevates the bloodbath and our appreciation of this burgeoning franchise.

Review by Matt Cummings

John Wick: Chapter 2 is perhaps the best film so far of 2017. Filled with enough violence to keep "Room Service" busy, the movie also incorporates a surprisingly rewarding story. By film's end, Wick is on the run from literally everyone, a victim of the rules that first brought him fame as The Boogeyman. This isn't what I would have expected from Director Chad Stahelski's carnage, that his titular hero would now be wanted by every assassin in the world for killing on Continental grounds. Central to my appreciation of Chapter 2 is its soundtrack, a deftly mix of orchestrations, guitar play, and rock anthems that elevates the bloodbath into new and unexpected territory.

Assassin John Wick (Reeves) has a hard time retiring, whether it's in the pursuit of his stolen Mustang or in the "offer of employment" that comes soon after he has car back in hand. That offer comes in the form of a blood mark from Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio), who helped Wick escape the life years before. When Wick denies Santino's request, he comes under (literal) fire from his kill squad and the dangerous mute Ares (Ruby Rose), which devastates his house. Forced into a contract that he must honor, Wick is pitted against the skilled bodyguard Cassian (Common), whose defense of Wick's mark is more personal than professional. After D'Antonio offers a warrant for Wick's head, The Boogeyman must parry his way through multiple assassins, leading to a bloody showdown at the famous Continental Hotel. There, manager Winston (Ian McShane) must make an impossible decision whether or not to honor the hard rules of the Continental: no blood be spilled on its floors. The result will lead to chaos, pitting Wick against the entire assassin community, with the promise that anyone who comes after him will die.

Chapter 2 is composed by Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard, who composed the first John Wick. Bates is also featured on my list of composers for his work on 300, which was one of my favorite scores of 2006. Again, Bates and Richard forge new territory with Chapter 2, never relying too much on their past success to drive the current tone. As a result, tracks are out of order, starting off with the operatic rock Plastic Heart, performed by Ciscandra Nostalghia. It's an important moment in the movie, as Wick moves beyond vengeance master and back into his old life as a cut-throat assassin. It's the side of Wick we've always wanted to see, but it's also a moment in which Wick matures right in front of us, holding the hand of a victim before annihilating her. From there, the tracklist moves back to the traditional score, but features many different types of orchestrations. Bates uses violins and even a mandolin in tracks like Santino to create a dark atmospheric sound that perfectly fits the mood.

Bates and Richard blend tracks 2-6 effortlessly, so much so that I couldn't quite tell where each began and ended. Man of Focus is an example of this, part Wick anthem but also filled with one of my favorite tracks - Guns & Turtlenecks - which perfectly embodies who John Wick is: a stylish but deadly assassin whose moniker The Boogeyman is well-deserved. Suits, Maps & Guns is another such track, setting up the moments when Wick gets his toys from the Sommelier. Musically, they're reprises of all the elements featured in the score, and they're a great place to start if you're still on the fence about purchasing it. And even after those, if you're still on the fence check out John Wick Mode, performed by Le Castle. It features an impressive dance club beat in the vein of Tron: Legacy.

Some tracks are very short like Walk to Museum or Fountain Foes (a fave of mine) but they're not done cheaply or thrown in to pad the score. And longer ones - like track 15's Razor Bath - never bore, either. Again, they expand the John Wick story beyond the simple Gun-Fu moments, and in that way also expand the music into exciting new territories. The 23 tracks distributed by Varèse Sarabande Records never miss out on the technical details, as we're treated to excellent sound quality with no pops or compression issues. I also have to throw a shout-out to track 19's Knives on a Train which features some killer drum fills as Wick and Cassian go at it.

This year is already featuring some great soundtrack music, led by the impressive John Wick: Chapter 2 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Bates and Richards pull together a terrific mix of studio orchestrations and rock music to fill out the story of The Boogeyman in a way that gets me excited for the impending Chapter 3. It also makes me want to check out the unique sound of Ciscandra Nostalghia; in that way alone, I consider the soundtrack to be a success. In ending my thoughts about the movie, I can't wait to see what the franchise has in store for our hero and now I'm equally excited to hear how Bates and Richards might paint that soundscape.

John Wick: Chapter 2 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is available now digitally, with a CD following on March 3, 2017.

Movie Review: #FiftyShadesDarker

Christian and Anastasia renew their bondage bloodlush in a film only a masochist would find inviting.

Review by Matt Cummings

I seriously could not believe how bad 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey was until I went back to my original review. The worst offense was that its story failed to elevate the burgeoning awareness of the lifestyle, settling instead on a flawed character who decides to impart his pain on an unsuspecting doe. It was also a terribly dull affair, offering zero chemistry between its leads, and plodding through its inane plot like a death march. Seen through those lenses, 50 Shades Darker is as faithful a sequel as one could imagine, a bland and boring affair that actually sees less bondage, more of that bad chemistry, and a plot that only a masochist would find inviting.

Fresh off her breakup, Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) is seeking big changes in her life, working for an ad agency while trying to put her painful breakup with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) behind her. But Grey won't have that, eventually offering Steele a powerful remedy for their relationship woes: Grey will pursue a strictly vanilla relationship with Ana. Intrigued by the notion, Ana returns to Christian's life, only to be swept up in his past loves, including his "teacher" (Kim Basinger) and a former submissive (Bella Heathcoat) who practices some Fatal Attraction on Ana's car. As Christian adjusts to their new relationship, Ana too faces challenges with her job, as boss Jack (Eric Johnson) makes her existence there nearly impossible, forcing Christian's hand in a way that will bring the two closer together than ever. But will Christian remain the dutiful vanilla, and can Ana keep this relationship from becoming a repeat of her boyfriend's previous spectacular failures?

Who cares. Darker quickly wraps up most of these questions within the first 30 minutes, but never seems to know when to quit. We're made to think these two are actually in love with each other, when really all we know is that Christian has money, Ana does not, and the two apparently have even less in common than they did in the original. There's no basis for a relationship here, and so the story plods on in an effort to make us think otherwise. There was much talk of these actors' disdain for each other while shooting the first film, and it seems like much of that wasn't resolved. There's zero chemistry between them and, bubbling up like a radioactive dump site. Sexually-tinged moments feel forced, and any effort by these two to genuinely love each other come off as practiced rather than what new director James Foley probably intended.

Replacing Sam Taylor-Johnson, Foley couldn't care less about the world outside of these two, filling those moments with the same gum-chewing moron brother (Luke Grimes), his girlfriend (Eloise Mumford), and Grey's doting mom (Marcia Gay Harden). They're all supposed to represent anchors for our leads, but none of them are around enough to do any such thing. Instead, this threesome is left to react rather than inhabit their roles. Basinger, once a sex symbol, hasn't been good in a film in awhile. She seems too old to be Christian's Domme: I truly wondered if anyone considered this before pairing Dornan who clearly could be his grandmother. Any interesting plot details - especially those between Grey's former sub Leila and Ana's new boss - are brushed aside fairly quick, as are the negotiations between Ana and Grey that renew their relationship. The best moment of this series continues to be the "negotiation scene" in the original. Here, we get a dinner, an overpriced bottle of wine, and voila! things are back to normal.

Of course, nothing in Darker is normal, including the "kinky fuckery" made famous by Ana to describe Christian's pursuits. Darker once again misses the opportunity to sexualize these moments of romance for the 21st Century, abandoning the notion that regular people enjoy the sport alongside seasoned lifestylers, and enforcing the notion that this kind of smut is somehow a bad thing. Darker still makes us think BDSM is embraced only by damaged people, who can't seem to find their sweet spot between sadism, masochism, and the normal pursuits of everyday people. In many ways, Darker quietly and conveniently sends the first two to their cages, leaving the latter to wonder why they bothered to see the movie in the first place.

It's entirely possible that someone is still waiting for 2018's 50 Shades Shades Freed, as that one was filmed alongside Darker. But that pool of interest is diminishing quickly, dragged down by yet another snoozefest that's poorly acted, poorly executed as a drama, and entirely misses the point of BDSM. Anyone who emerges from this one should ask for their money back, as it offers less frolicking than the original, hampered by two leads who still don't get along. Darker immediately enters my Worst-Of list for 2017 and should be avoided as a franchise at all costs.

Fifty Shades Darker is rated R for strong erotic sexual content, some graphic nudity, language, and "kinky fuckery," and has a runtime of 118 minutes.

Movie Review: #JohnWickChapter2

The further adventures of John Wick bring more guns, punches, and an actual story in a memorable follow-up to the original.

Review by Matt Cummings

If anyone would have told you that 2015 would feature Keanu Reeves in a career-defining movie, as well as one of the best films of that year, you would have thought me crazy. But that's just what happened with John Wick, a gift to action film that brought about the word "Gun-Fu". Audiences were blown away by that film's brazen violence, incredible hand-to-hand combat, and the absolute gut punch of its titular character experiencing incredible loss. But when the credits rolled and we got off that amazing rollercoaster, the next question that inevitably arose was "What's next?" Luckily, that answer brings with it an expansion of this universe that makes John Wick: Chapter 2 so appealing.

John Wick: Chapter 2 is an absolute thrillride, a cinematic blast of fresh air that builds on the previous film, surpassing it in many ways while retaining its B-movie schlockiness. This isn't a February dump but a strong statement of the franchise's power (and brains) to open so early rather than wait for what's usually a crowded Summer. That plays out in so many ways throughout the 122-minute slugfest that's far more than punching and explosions. We learn more about Wick's previous life, including the honor code that at first allowed him to escape the hitman's world but what ultimately drags him back in. Wick re-enters this world pitted against truly bad people who manipulate him into impossible territory, which explores a corner of the character's life that we didn't even think we wanted to know.

Chapter 2 also takes us deeper into the Continental - perhaps the biggest surprise from the original - expanding it into a worldwide organization. But it doesn't stop there: we learn more about its rules of war and what happens when someone violates them. It's a powerful moment near film's end when Wick must make a choice as D'Antonio claims asylum inside the Continental; we know how such assassinations worked out in the original, so when this sequence unfolds our curiosity is understandably peaked. We're also treated to a several unforgettable sequences in which Wick gets 'weaponized' for the hit, which includes a pseudo-cameo by Peter Serafinowicz as The Sommelier, although he's unlike any wine connoisseur I've ever met. Call him a Q figure, but Wick also utilizes a special tailor, a fact that makes so much sense based on how the story unfolds. In every way, Chapter 2 feels more like a brutal version of a Bond film, right down to the cinematography by Dan Laustsen, who bathes it in sumptuous colors.

It's not too far to go to suggest that Reeves is John Wick, right down to the tailoring of his dark clothes and choice of high-powered vehicles and weapons. Chapter 2 gives Reeves something he hasn't enjoyed much of - a guaranteed opener - and he proves his mettle by merely doing what he does best. He plays Wick with a sardonic wit, choosing quiet substance over style (although his suits are quite exquisite). He also demonstrates a level of humanity that we knew existed within the character but who comes alive as he tracks down a mark that he does not wish to kill. That's unexpected, and a strong indication that this won't be your typical B-movie gun show. Other supporting characters like McShane, Lance Reddick as the Continental hotel desk man, and even Common play their parts perfectly. Add to that the re-teaming of Reeves and Laurence Fishburne as The Bowery King, and it's as if the two have emerged post-Matrix and realized that life is just more fun if you shoot and joke your way out of things. These moments are never too long, and the dry comedy behind the supporting trinity offer moments for the audience to take a much needed break from all the Gun-Fu.

And boy is there a ton of that in Chapter 2. It's clear that this film racks up more bodies than in the original - including how you can really kill someone with a pencil - but everything still feels more amped up. Director Chad Stahelski is smart to let off the gas just long enough to plug some story in before getting us to the next action sequence. Believe it or not, there is a story within Chapter 2, a fact which makes every fisticuff, every gun battle, and every brutal throwdown so much better. John's consolation of the mark (played by Claudia Gerini) is in stark contrast to the vicious response in a subway car; another cameo at the beginning ties up a loose end started in Chapter 1. Through story and action, we see that Wick come under genuine distress, that leads to a great ending but an uncertain future for once-retired assassin. He will have to fight his way out of every moment from now on, and that sea change resonates as the credits roll. Without these, this is just another really good action movie; Stahelski knows that he must infuse story here, and the script by Writer Derek Kolstad adds a ton of jokes and witty banter, all of which sets up the next moment of visceral violence.

John Wick: Chapter 2 checks off every box for me: it expands the universe of The Continental, absolutely feeds our desire for "Gun-Fu" violence, and places John's life in amazing peril as the film ends. Reeves embraces this role, making it as much a part of him as Ted Theodore Logan. It's impossible now to imagine our world without John Wick, and I hope his next adventure is not his last.

John Wick: Chapter 2 is rated R for strong violence throughout, some language and brief nudity and has a runtime of 122 minutes.

Movie Review: #TheLEGOBatmanMovie

The Dark Knight tackles his feelings for The Joker in the fun but flawed The LEGO Batman Movie.

Review by Matt Cummings

If you were like me, 2014's The LEGO Movie was not only hilarious but a breath of fresh air. It took the now-crowded (and somewhat predictable) animated landscape and turned it on its ear, by taking the genre through the Fourth Wall with memorable results. And while The LEGO Batman Movie is fun and quite good, it's clearly not on the same level with the original. But is that demotion enough of a reason not to see it?

Billionaire Bruce Wayne and his doppelganger Batman (voiced by Will Arnett) revel in the life each has created for themselves. For the Caped Crusader, it's once again capturing the notorious Joker (Zach Galifianakis), all while Gotham City celebrates Batman's greatness. For Wayne, life is about parties and acquisitions until he meets the new chief of police Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson), who suggests that Batman's protection of the city is actually causing its destruction. While Wayne plots the acquisition of Gordon, he accidentally adopts Dick Grayson (Michael Cera), whose golly-gee-wiz attitude eventually sees him discovering the Batcave, much to Wayne's dismay. But trouble looms as The Joker gathers a squad of baddies from The Phantom Zone in the hopes of ridding Gotham of its hero, while proving to Batman that he actually needs The Joker in order to exist. The results will see Batman face tough realities about what he does and whether it might be time to forge new friendships in order to protect the city he loves.

There's much to like about The LEGO Batman Movie: its over-the-top meta zaniness reveals one of the best scenes of the year, as Batman self-deprecates across his various television and movie incarnations to Aflred (Ralph Fiennes), including the infamous Batnipple. There's a frenetic pace to the film, as if Director Adam McKay is trying to squeeze in as much story and meta as possible. That sort of spirit gives the film a quality we don't see often, making it perhaps the best Batman movie ever, and certainly its funniest. Arnett delivers perfectly-gravely gravitas to the role, while Cera's take on Robin is quite clever. He's just taking all of this in, including that his new dad (Wayne) has "given permission" to Batman to take the boy out on missions. That sort of naivety permeates LEGO, in which heroes and villains are as inept as the regular colored brick people. There's also a very human element to LEGO which is revealed early on: The Joker becomes hurt at Batman's revelation that his arch enemy is merely a common criminal, another piece of trash to be tossed into the Gotham City Landfill. That moment comes off better visually than Galifianakis' rather drab voicing of it, highlighting early problems that keep it from being another LEGO Movie.

While incredibly funny in many parts, LEGO descends into uncomfortably quiet moments that go on a little too long to be funny. They include sequences where we're meant to either feel pity for Batman and his villains, as if their choices were somehow forced upon them. These on-the-nose moments will go right over the heads of young ones and adults will scoff at the notion that either side "needs" the other to survive. The other thing - and this will really piss off hardcore Bat-types - is that Batman is somehow in love with Barbara Gordon. There's been attempts lately in the comics and movies to connect the two, but Gordon is essentially half of Wayne's age; moreover, there's no reason established why Wayne would fall for her, other than she's simply beautiful. It might be considered the unnecessarily layering on of the Bat-criticisms, but the film's frenetic pace - especially as Joker compiles a list of WB baddies spanning multiple franchises - doesn't give us enough time with these other properties to truly enjoy them. I was waiting for a Voldemort/Alfred moment - as the very good Fiennes meets up with his doppleganger - but this never materializes. Some of us at the test screening were also confused if we were seeing a six-legged version of Godzilla or if that was meant to be something else. Nevertheless, The Wicked Witch of the West and whole host of other WB properties show up, which will take a couple of showings to pick up.

Of course, there is a tender side to LEGO, and the idea of family is discussed (again) in this one, which is sometimes hackneyed by a team of six writers. Rogue One's harsh journey to box office success was an isolated example that usually isn't the norm. But, McKay deftly directs the colored plastic bricks, which look gorgeous thanks to Animal Logic Animation Studios. The animation is so good that you'll think that you're watching stop motion rather than the computer-generated product we're presented.

So the question remains: should you see it? If you love LEGO's, yes. If you have children, yes. If you're a hardcore adult builder that secretly watches the original too much, sure. The LEGO Batman Movie should appeal to these and even more demographics, but reaction will depend upon whether you want to see a smart or merely clever followup. Batman is clearly the latter, a movie with lots of one-liners but lacking in other scenes, some of which are almost too painfully quiet. Vocal performances are stellar and the animation yields both the bright colors and wackiness that made the original so memorable. I can't say this one will resonate as strongly, but it's the first hint that the doldrums of January cinema have finally given way.

The LEGO Batman Movie is rated PG for mild rude humor and action and has a runtime of 104 minutes.

New Clip From EAGLES OF DEATH METAL: NOS AMIS (OUR FRIENDS) Documentary

This HBO Documentary Film follows the American rock band Eagles of Death Metal as they recount their experiences before, during and after the tragic terrorist attack at their concert in Paris on November 13, 2015 – a heinous act of violence that claimed 89. The film spotlights the deep bond of friendship between band co-founders Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme as well as the intensely personal connection that the Eagles of Death Metal has always had with their devoted fans.

That relationship, coupled with a profound sense of responsibility to help the Bataclan survivors cope with their physical and emotional wounds, inspired the band to return to Paris: first to perform with U2 at a rescheduled concert three weeks after the attacks, and later to finish the Paris show at the Olympia concert hall in front of their fans, many of whom were survivors of the earlier show.

Movie Review: #ACUREFORWELLNESS

Acquired taste

By: April Meneghetti

Gore Verbinski, the man who gave us the first “Ring” movie, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, “Rango,” and “The Lone Ranger” is now back with this Hitchcockian gothic psychological thriller designed to keep you guessing till the very end. Even though its final 20 minutes somewhat go off the rails a bit, overall A CURE FOR WELLNESS is stunning, bold and hypnotic.

Dane DeHaan plays an ambitious young executive, Lockhart, sent to retrieve his company’s missing CEO who’s decided to stay at a remote wellness center in the Swiss Alps. What is supposed to be an easy assignment turns into a journey of slowly but surely uncovering the center’s dark past, uncovering the real reasons as to why the guests keep staying there, longing for the cure, as Lockhart himself starts to question his own sanity.

You will fall in love with the cinematography by DP Bojan Bazelli. Even if you’re not a fan of mystery or suspense, Bazelli’s cinematography for “A Cure For Wellness’ will leave you floored, the word breathtaking doesn’t even begin to fairly describe it. There are shots through the tunnel, around the castle, and even during some of the film’s most disturbing moments, they draw you in, gorgeous in every possible way. And the fact that they actually filmed a big chunk on location at Castle Hohenzollern in Germany does help because the place becomes a supporting role.

Ever since “Chronicle,” Dane DeHaan has been an actor that’s caught my attention because I do believe that this rising star has what it takes to be great, A CURE FOR WELLNESS allows him to showcase a tease of that potential. His performance reminds me of Leo DiCaprio’s in “Shutter Island” and Jack Nicholson’s in “The Shining” where to a certain extent, you’re not certain if they’d eventually cross that line or remain on this side of the fence. A CURE FOR WELLNESS is trippy, it’s intriguing, it’s filled with all kinds of odd imagery, it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. It’s a sensory experience type of a film, the kind that also evokes all sorts of questions about society and what it means to live well and the ambition for purity. But again, as I said earlier, the final 20 minutes do go off the rails a bit, by that time the film feels like it runs longer than it should and furthermore it gets ruined by its desire to leave us on a happy note. A CURE FOR WELLNESS will find its audience, but it’s an acquired taste.

Jack Nicholson & Kristen Wiig To Star In Remake Of "Toni Erdmann"

Jack Nicholson turns 80 in April, and having not made a film since 2010’s How Do You Know, many in Hollywood had assumed he had retired. Indeed, as recently as last month, The Sun newspaper ran an article with the headline 'Jack Nicholson To Retire'. Almost as if in response to such headlines, it's now emerged that Nicholson will be starring in the English-language remake of German comedy Toni Erdmann, opposite Kristen Wiig.

The original Toni Erdmann, written and directed by Maren Ade, was first released in Europe in 2016, and only saw a UK release last Friday. It starred Peter Simonischek as a fake teeth-wearing prankster father, and Sandra Hüller as his highly-strung daughter who finds herself on the receiving end of her father’s practical jokes.

The film has received universal critical acclaim – including our reviewer here Empire, who called it “a weird, thoughtful, affecting treat”, awarding it the full five stars. It swept the board at the European Film Awards back in December, and will be the film to beat in the Best Foreign Language Film category at this month’s Oscars.

Adam McKay, the director behind Anchorman, Step Brothers and The Big Short, will be shepherding the project as producer, with longtime partner Will Ferrell, and Wiig also producing. Original director Maren Ade will executive produce, but there’s no word on who will helm the remake.
