PIRANHA 3DD Review By: RAMA

PIRANHA 3DD Review
By: RAMA

Would RAMA go back into the water after watching this movie?

I give this movie a relatively high rating ONLY because it does what it’s supposed to do. We expect it to be bad and it’s pretty bad, we expect it to be funny and it’s outrageously funny, we expect it to be a dumb guilty pleasure flick filled with blood, breasts, and Ving Rhames’s shotgun leg, and it’s got all those and so much more, it doesn’t deviate from what it promises itself to be and that makes PIRANHA 3DD ridiculously, infectiously, undeniably fun. Bite this!..

After the events at Lake Victoria, the pre-historic school of blood-thirsty piranhas make their way into a newly opened waterpark.

The intro scene for this sequel is just as awesome as the intro for the previous installment, although that can be argued. Richard Dreyfuss’ Hooper-esque character vs. crazy Gary Busey messing with a dead cow in the water. To some, the jury may still be out, but to me, I say there’s a certain disturbing satisfaction that comes with watching Busey meet his maker by way of Piranhas because that dude scares me. Ha!

Ever since this sequel was announced, just from the title alone, everybody knew that Dimension Films would not only use the 3D shots once again to get that effect of things jumpin’ out of the screen and into your face but the title also suggests that this sequel would feature more female nudity than the previous installment and boy did it do just that or what?! Bigger fake breasts, full frontal and all. This is the perfect film for teenagers with raging hormones.

The waterpark in PIRANHA 3DD is run by David Koechner who plays the type of character he’s always good at playing, a douche who’s all about hot babes and profit.
His step daughter is Danielle Panabaker, an actress who oddly enough often finds herself in horror movies (Friday The 13th remake, The Crazies remake), she and another nerd character who has a crush on her, are pretty much the two decent ones out of the bunch, the rest are knee deep in party and sex.

But the highlights are Ving Rhames who returns and is now packin’ shotgun for a leg and the legendary David Hassellhoff who thinks he’s all that, but he does get to live up to his Mitch Buchanan of Batywatch days.

The humor in PIRANHA 3DD works because the whole concept and the star cameos are just so damn ridiculous, there’s no way you could resist laughing. Even the violence is so over the top, you’d close your eyes out of disgust, and yet you can’t help but crack up at the same time. The piranhas in this film go through and come out of all kindis of orifices, some of the scenes will leave you shocked. And once the terror comes, it just keeps on coming, forget about story or substance, because from that point on, it’s every man for himself. Watching PIRANHA 3DD is like riding a roller coaster but you don’t quite know exactly what you’ve signed up for. So just hold on tight and put your arms up. PIRANHA 3DD is the perfect blend of horror and comedy.

Green Lantern Comes Out Of The Closet

One of DC Comics oldest heroes is super-coming out. And do you really care? What is the big deal here?

The original Green Lantern - a DC Comics mainstay for the past 70 years - will be revealed to be a gay man in next week's issue of "Earth 2."

Alan Scott - formerly a married father of two who first appeared in 1940 - tips readers off to his sexuality early on in the comic when he gives his boyfriend a welcome home kiss.

"He's very much the character he was. He's still the pinnacle of bravery and idealism. He's also gay," "Earth 2" writer James Robinson said.

The Emerald Guardian's sexuality was rebooted along with the rest of his fictional universe as part of DC's "New 52" initiative aimed at rejuvenating their characters.

Robinson said he decided to make the change because making the character young again meant erasing Scott's gay superhero son out of existence.

"The only downside of his being young was we lose his son, Obsidian, who's gay. So I thought, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?'" Robinson recalled. "That was the seed that started it."

He ran his idea by the bosses at DC, "who signed off on it without hesitation."

Robinson, a British writer who lives in San Francisco with his wife, is no stranger to gay characters - he wrote DC's "Starman" comic in the 1990s, a groundbreaking title that starred a homosexual superhero. He said the only agenda he's pushing is reality.
"It's a realistic depiction of society," he said. "You have to move with the times."
He said he did hope the character - who's the most powerful member of DC's superteam, the Justice Society - would be an inspiration.

"He's a type-A personality who doesn't hide in the shadows," Robinson said.
"I hope he's a positive figure. If there's some kind of kid out there who's reading the comic and who's worried about the person he is, maybe it will give him a positive sense of who he is. Or maybe a different kid will read it and decide I don't need to bully some kind of kid in school," Robinson said.
While a gay wedding in Archie Comics earlier this year and impending same-sex nuptials in a Marvel X-Men comic have recieved a small amount of backlash from angry parents, Robinson said he's not worried about that because "that kind of negativity is stupid and outmoded."
"We should be preaching love and tolerance," he said.

"Earth 2" No. 2 goes on sale Wednesday.

The character is different than the more modern Green Lantern, ladies' man Hal Jordan, who stars in his own comics and is a member of an extraterrestrial police force called the Green Lantern Corps. Jordan's also part of DC's Justice League with Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, the Flash and Aquaman.

In the current "New 52" continuity, the Alan Scott Green Lantern and the Justice Society operate in a different universe than the Justice League. Robinson said in the "Earth 2" universe, Scott is the sole Green Lantern, and "the strongest, most important super-powered character" in the world.

For Greater Glory Review By: Matt C

For Greater Glory Review
By: Matt C

For Greater Glory isn't perfect, but can you forgive its faults enough to see it?

Historical ensemble dramas are usually something one might see after the Summer blockbusters have smashed, exploded, and shot their way into theatres. To see them this early in the summer run is not unique, but it's important to note when they do appear. Sometimes it's done because the movie could be a weak entry into the Oscars if it were released in the Fall. Genres of this type also come packaged as an epic, bringing with them all kinds of potential issues: too many characters fighting for screen time, usually resulting in a bloated and ineffective product. This is where we find For Greater Glory, a well-intentioned film that tries very hard to be noticed but ultimately stumbles over its own weight.

Based on the events surrounding the Mexican Cristeros War of 1926-29, Glory attempts to tell how this secular revolution affected the lives of ordinary citizens, while exposing the reasons for the lockdown in the firstplace. Glory is told from several vantage points, including a young troublemaker (Mauricio Kuri), a priest (Santiago Cabrera, Heroes), and a former general turned factory owner (Andy Garcia, Ocean's Eleven). The brutal response by the Mexican government, executing priests in the street and hanging rebels by telegraph poles, is displayed vividly here and was sadly a part of the real Cristeros War. As the government, led by President Plutarco Elias Calles (Ruben Blades, Cradle Will Rock) begins its brutal crackdown and the movement goes underground, the atheist Garcia is approached to lead the rebellion. This aspect of the story is intriguing for obvious reasons, and screenwriter Michael Love revisits Garcia's conundrum throughout the film. The movie also takes an honest but decidedly brutal approach, killing off major characters and other favorites throughout, which could earn points for filmgoers looking for a complete story. While Love does allow some of his characters enough screentime to flourish, making their deaths all that more powerful, he leaves many more to just a smattering of scenes.

This is the directorial debut for Dean Wright, who served as Visual Effects Producer/Supervisor for The Lord of the Rings. Wright creates a lush background for our actors, surrounding them with beautiful vistas, elegant palaces, and desolate wastelands. He clearly knows how to direct, but it's his decision to keep much of what was shot in the film that ultimately drags it down. Even with a runtime of 2 hours and 23 minutes, Wright doesn't tell every story well, injecting several distracting subplots, such as the role of the US ambassador (Bruce Greenwood, Star Trek), Garcia's relationship with his wife (Eva Longoria, Desperate Housewives), and a discussion of how Mexican women served the underground by carrying bullets in their dresses. All of those lines are truly interesting, and would have made intriguing films by themselves, but there's too many of them to connect to the larger tale. By Act 3, several of these lines are abandoned, and will leave the audience to wonder why they were added in the first place. Even the efforts of composer James Horner (Field of Dreams) are squeezed into almost every nook and cranny of the film, giving even more feeling of a bloated affair. Sometimes silence can be more effective in creating the right mood (see Alien), but Glory misses that message and instead smothers the viewer.

Some critics will point out that Glory was partially funded by The Knights of Columbus, who assisted in brokering the cease-fire during the real Cristeros Wars, and that the film suffers from too strong of a religious message. In my opinion, the film ultimately fails because of its length and a cavalcade of characters that's ultimately too much to follow, not because of its funding or supposed message. Glory takes an honest look at a tough time in Mexico's history, a fact should be celebrated for getting this far, even if the final product doesn't pay off.

For Greater Glory won't smash any box office records, nor probably show up at the Oscars, but if you're looking to take some time off from the cacophony of explosions and cliched dialogue requisite in summer blockbusters, this one might do the trick, so long as you're willing to overlook its faults. For Greater Glory is rated R for violence and language. I would steer children far away from this one, as the tone is far too dark for young eyes.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Review By: Ursula Albrecht

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Review
By: Ursula M. Albrecht

Please Welcome our guest reviewer Ursula. Her husband runs this kick-ass site onepercase.net and is also a buddy of mine. So when I found out that Ursula wanted to give reviewing a shot I was right on it.

So without further adieu here is her review.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN is a 127 minuets full of magic and visual enlightenment. Directed by Rupert Sanders and written by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock, and Hossein Amini. I left the theatre feeling like I just saw a series of paintings brought to life by body language and a brilliant score interpret ting the story of Snow painted as the ultimate heroine. It was so intricate in its artistic nature. The music score by James Newton Howard was lovely and brought an epic quality to the film. I was thrilled with all the unexpected magic and creatures. The magic in the movie was much like a Harry Potter movie and the slight unexpected. Clearly the animals were friends of Snow, leading her to safety.

I like that they focused on the enemy and the darkness in the beginning. The queen played by Charlize Theron, was not so much scary as she was pure evil. Kristen Stewart who plays Snow White brings that fresh faced compassion and pure princess quality to the movie. Not a girly princess but a tom boy and a young women full of integrity and fight. She is not once bathed or princess like in appearance. Often her hands touched the face of someone or something and her nails were covered in dirt. This gave the movie a gritty texture, removing the cliché of the original Disney version while still allowing all the magic to sweep you away.
The movie does not focus on love or romance or even beauty so much as the beauty of a heroine. This is a grown woman’s perspective of the movie. It clearly had the touch of a woman’s mind and vision in its story telling. The queen hated men; snow on the other hand had no interest in seeking a man either.

She was focused on her kingdom and her people. There was very little dialogue; however the characters still came through. The acting was much like a play in the theatre, not so much like a big screen movie. The acting was focused on delivering powerful body language and facial expression. It was an upgrade from the savior prince character in the Disney version. Instead the two leading male characters rode into a triumphant battle with her. She did not wait in the sidelines; she rode in, chain mail and all, storming the castle with her soldiers and the two men that would fight to the death for her.

The dreamy and barbaric huntsman, Chris Hemsworth is front and center protecting Snow and in awe of her strength. There are some twists in his character and a good story behind his intentions. Will, Snow’s best friend from her childhood, played by Sam Claflin, is young, naïve, full of passion and fight! His ignorance and passionate fury brings a refreshing bit to the film.

The music throughout the film contained whatever mood the story was moving through at the moment. Original music was by James Newton Howard. It brought the epic nature, the magic to life, and whatever the mood needed, drama, suspense, the chase, the fight, sadness and triumph.

My favorite piece that I took with me from the movie was the marriage of Cinematography (Greig Fraser) and special effects (too many to name). The artistic nature of this film was absolutely brilliant and exhilarating for me. Every scene came to life visually and many times gave me the story purely through my eyes even if there was no sound.

She becomes a warrior fighting for her kingdom and her people. She is pure and her beauty is not on the surface it is in her willing to die and fight for her people. Her love is worth sacrificing for and her love is for her kingdom.

I think this is the version little ladies should see and skip the Disney version because it is bogus……..

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Review By: RAMA

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN Review
By: RAMA

Matt's review will be up once he is back from the Prometheus screening tonight. But in the mean time RAMA is back with another review.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN visually redefined fairy tales, it’s nothing like I’ve ever seen before. The dark forest should get a best supporting nod for being ridiculously creepy. It plays Jedi mind tricks on your eyes. I’m sure those who’ve tried LSD once in their lifetime would want to get lost in that place.

All joking aside, the film does have too much emphasis on the visual, which is not surprising, seeing that this is first time feature director Rupert Sanders’ field of expertise, if you’re familiar with his commercials especially the one for Sears’ Arboretum, but the script is weak and Sanders’ direction is rather uninspired. Sure the movie has all kinds of freaky fairies and gigantic troll and other mind-twisting imagery, but a film can’t rely just on those. And how is it titled SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, when the strongest points are Queen Ravenna and the dwarves?! They’re practically the whole show, they steal every scene that both Snow White and the Huntsman are in…

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar(r) winner Charlize Theron) out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

Let me make this clear that it’s going to take a while or it’s going to take more than just this movie for Kristen Stewart to distance herself from her iconic role Bella. I give B for good effort but her accent comes on and off and her rage and expressions are still Bella’s but I’m inclined to put the blame on first time director Sanders who may not seem to have a full understanding of characters, how they’d interact, how they’d develop, and for a guy who’s good at visuals, there’s no creativity in staging some of the scenes including the final battle. This movie has butterflies that could turn into some kind of giant white moose but there’s nothing extraordinary or inventive about everything else.

I think the concept is also flawed, the idea of making Snow White to be this kind of messy angel that everything and everyone would immediately be so in awe of, seems a bit silly. I think the huntsman and I are the only ones that don’t understand why nature would just bow down without question. There’s a scene where Snow White just escaped from the castle and found herself on the shores, and out of the blue just sat there a white horse as if it was waiting for her all that time, that kind of wonderment may work in Sanders’ commercials but here it may cause audiences to chuckle.

Charlize Theron is a remarkable actress, let me repeat that.. Charlize Theron is a remarkable actress and her performance as Queen Ravenna is a reminder why Theron is one of all time’s greatest. Evil, ruthless, and unpredictable don’t even begin to describe. Theron as Ravenna would take her competition, Julia Roberts in Mirror Mirror, and smash her into pieces and she’d still have some time to smile.
I have to give mad credits to the costumes by Colleen Atwood, the ones worn by Ravenna faithfully follows the character, from glory to darkness to downfall.

I think Chris Hemsworth does a decent job for what’s given to him, considering this is the role that other actors like Hugh Jackman decided to turn down. I’m still not sure what type of accent that Hemworth acquired for the huntsman but at least you don’t see THOR at all. If he can’t do more, it’s only because the weak script doesn’t allow him to.

You’re gonna get a kick out of watching the dwarfized Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Johnny Harris, Brian Gleeson and Toby Jones. These are all fantastic Brit thesps, each with a body of work that we all know about, so to see them in this format, if you will, is simply amusing and they seem to be having a blast. Sadly for actor Sam Claflin who plays prince William, he’s barely visible. But then again, his role in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides wasn’t that memorable either. Poor guy can’t catch a break.

I think the dark forest plays a very significant supporting role in this movie and the brothers grimm would pee their pants. The dark forest and the fairies home become sort of a playground for director Rupert Sanders, he’s in his element in those places, where anything goes, where imagination and terror go hand in hand.
I think Sanders should not consider this first time venture, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, as failure but it’s something that he could definitely take and learn from the next time he tackles something this ambitious.
