Sin City Sequel Is Up And Running

About a month ago, word came through that Robert Rogriguez was finally committing himself to the long-developing Sin City sequel. The news was met with a degree of cautious excitement, and a lot of we'll-believe-it-when-we-see-it shrugging, but word has this morning come through from Dimension Films that the newly officially monikered Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is properly up and running. Yeesh!

"The first question I'm always asked is 'When will you make another Sin City?'" says Rodriguez in the press release. "I've wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but we have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. A Dame To Kill For will certainly be worth the wait!"

Frank Miller chimes in with "The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything lke it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first."

Miller has written the screenplay in cahoots with William Monahan (The Departed), and while details are under wraps, previous intel has suggested that there will be three stories and a wrap-around as before, and that the A Dame To Kill For segment will be joined by two new instalments that aren't based on pre-existing Miller comics. "You won't find those in a book," said Rod in March. "Those will be surprises."

The title story has Marv in it, which ought to suggest Mickey Rourke's showing up again (although he's hedged about wearing the make-up again in the past). Dimension's statement says simply that, "Many of the original cast are expected to return."

Official casting begins next week, and shooting, in all senses, starts in the summer.

Sabrina The Teenage Witch To Get Hollywood Makeover

Sabrina The Teenage Witch is getting a makeover at Sony Pictures. The precocious teen witch who originated in 60s Archie Comics, is being recast as a superhero. The live action film will be an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man, about a young girl coming to terms with her remarkable powers.

Scribes Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari (they wrote Die In A Gunfight for MRC) will write the script, and Real Steel producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford are producing. Mark Waters, who worked on the presentation that Sony Pictures sparked to, might direct depending on scheduling. Archie Comics’ Jon Goldwater will be executive producer and screenwriter Jeff Stockwell, who also worked on the presentation, will be co-producer.

Sabrina previously had been turned into animated tv series in 1969, 1971 and again in 1999 and the source material was turned into the Melissa Joan Hart sitcom that ran seven seasons. While the tone of the movie will be edgier, they are keeping her talking black cat Salem, who here is a transformed prince creating unique love stories for Sabrina. The project is a priority for the studio with Doug Belgrad and Hannah Minghella fast tracking the negotiations.

“We mentioned it in a meeting to Amy Pascal who chimed in “I’m the little witch girl,’” Murphy and Montford said. “From then on we knew it was the right home.” They added that the popularity of the brand should allow for the studio to discover an actress for the Sabrina role. WME and Prolific rep Barrer & Ferrari.

Of the many deplorable plot lines in today’s slasher films, none is more dubious than the “Drunken teens go on vacation to a remote cabin and suffer immeasurably at the hands of a psycho” arc. There’s always something totally unbelievable in watching this kind of fare, and I’ve smartly stayed away from many of them. If that’s your fancy, I appreciate your patience at watching the sexually available blonde getting whacked, followed by her boyfriend the jock, leaving only the intelligent people to plot their escape, usually culminating in either psychosis, death, or the ugly choice of who dies next.

However, the twists promised in THE CABIN IN THE WOODS were said to be so inventive that my attendance at a recent screening was necessary. So, does it deliver the goods, or confirm my fear that this entire genre needs a reboot?

The answer is mixed. While there is a pretty interesting plot twist that I won’t divulge, I can say it is big enough to turn the genre on its ear. And, at many times, this Joss Whedon (Avengers) and Drew Goddard (Alias) written affair has the feel of a Quentin-Tarantino-From-Dusk-Till-Dawn film. It loves the fact that it’s campy and comedic, gruesome and uncomfortable, and it pulls out almost every tired cliché for the sake of comedy. The problem is that many of its jokes fall flat, leaving the audience to wonder if they were ever funny. The other problem is that most slasher films don’t require much concentration to watch, but Cabin demands it.

That might not appeal to some ticket goers who prefer mindless violence and sex to a story about…well; I can’t really tell you about that. The film sat in the can for three years before it could find a distributor - I can see why. Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), and a few ex-actors from Dollhouse are passable here and the story does have a very final ending that’s unexpected. In that regard, The Cabin in the Woods does redefine the genre, but not enough to save it.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is rated R for nudity, sex, violence, language, drugs, and anything else you can think of, and runs 95 minutes.

The Avengers Are They Still Filming?

"Marvel's The Avengers" is hitting screens everywhere in three weeks. This past Wednesday, the film had its big Hollywood premiere, and after the screening Twitter was ablaze with positive comments from those who saw it. (Full disclosure: I was there and it is indeed awesome.) But is the movie really finished, or are the Avengers assembling one last time?

On Thursday the cast came together for a press conference in Beverly Hills, and Robert Downey Jr. let it slip that the superhero group might not be done saving the world. At the end of the event, Movieline reports Downey stated, "Not to keep you guessing, but we're actually not done shooting. We are shooting one more scene... tonight. Not kidding." He followed it with a curt "No more questions!" and the panel ended.

Many of the gathered journalists assumed that Downey was joking. Earlier in the press conference, after giving a heartfelt response about working with his costars, Downey said, "That will be my last sincere answer of the afternoon." But his claim was later backed up by Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner and his towering green alter ego The Hulk (via computer animation) in the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ruffalo said, "Yeah, yeah -- we're shooting a scene tonight... We don't even really know what it is yet, but we're shooting a scene tonight." He said that a costume was delivered to his hotel room, but he didn't have any other details of what it is they would be doing.

While the studio has declined to officially comment on the matter, the creative team behind the movie was quick to deny the actors' statements. /Film asked Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige about Downey's claim, and he responded, "Do you always trust everything Robert Downey Jr. tells you?" The film's director, Joss Whedon, also rebuked Ruffalo's statement that he had his movie costume: "Mark Ruffalo's costume is made of CGI. Those guys are clowns."

It would certainly be odd to shoot an additional scene for a film just weeks before it was scheduled to open, not to mention after it had already premiered. But it's not out of the realm of possibility. One challenge of filming "The Avengers" is bringing the big cast of established stars together, but since they are all in Los Angeles this week for the premiere and press junket, that wouldn't be a factor. Plus, digital filmmaking does make quick changes to movies possible. Last year's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" shot an alternate ending just four weeks before it hit theaters.

If a new scene is being filmed, it stands to reason that it would be a brief scene after the credits like the one in the original "Iron Man" that introduced Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. While it doesn't seem likely we'll get official confirmation from Marvel that the extra scene was in fact filmed, it's not a bad idea to stick around through the credits just to be safe.

Paula Patton In Talks 2 Guns

Paula Patton is in talks to star with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns, a film that’s based on a Steven Grant graphic novel published by Boom! Studios. Baltasar Kormakur, who just directed Wahlberg in the remake of his film Contraband, is helming. The script was written by Blake Masters. Emmett/Furla Films is co-financing, and Universal will distribute domestically. Marc Platt is producing along with Boom!’s Andrew Cosby and Ross Richie, and Randall Emmett and George Furla.

Patton is coming off the female lead in Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol, the Brad Bird-directed hit. In 2 Guns, Patton will play Washington’s love interest, I’m told. She just completed Disconnect opposite Alexander Skarsgard and Jason Bateman.

Square Enix Batman: Arkham Asylum Figure Review

The guys over at onepercase have out done themselves again with this review of Play Arts Kai Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Square Enix has produced some of the best affordable museum-quality pieces in recent memory. How does the Play Arts Kai Batman: Arkham Asylum series hold up? Click on the jump to find out as we delve into their Batman No. 1.

Square Enix is well known for its various and excellent figure lines, particularly those in the Play Arts Kai line: each has demonstrated that companies like Hot Toys, SideShow, and others no longer have the monopoly on museum-quality pieces. Add to that the affordability of many of their lines ($50-100), and Square Enix is helping to re-write the industry. In no other line is this more true than with their offerings for Batman: Arkham Asylum series, in particular the Batman No. 1 release, which quite possibly the most amazing figure I've seen at this price point since the Marvel Select's large figure lines of The Hulks, Thanos, and Abomination.

Packaging - 4.5/5
A thick, colorful box surrounds Batman, adding distinctive elements from the video game. There is a second cape which is glued down behind the figure. I wish they would have left it so it could be removed without damaging the packaging. In addition, the plastic packaging surrounding The Detective keeps everything in place.

The detail on the cape is just amazing - it looks weathered, worn, but ready for a night of crusading!

Sculpting - 5/5
Unlike many companies in the higher price range who might use a standard body size to reduce cost, Play Arts has sculpted Batman from what appears to be an original mold. The result is incredible detail in both the suit, face, hands, and clothing that looks fairly realistic. The figure stands at approximately 8", but the detail is so good that it made my camera shots look very professional. You simply have to see this figure to appreciate the result.

Paint apps on the shoulder are clearly seen, with nice differentiation in the layering.

Paint - 5/5
Play Arts offers Batman with an amazing paint job; there's no evidence of overlap, paint has been applied evenly, and the figure looks like it's been either sprayed several times to achieve a good layering effect, or they used the right mix of paint and spray to achieve the same effect.

Nice job on the weathered look of Batman's belt, as well as the symbol.

Articulation - 5/5
Batman is offered with 26 points of articulation, making it one of the most poseable figures around. The head can move in several directions, the ball joints are stiff and almost click into place, allowing you to pose Bats in several action positions. Feet and even the chest area can be moved around, giving you the ability to turn the figure as I have in these camera shots. The articulation stands out as one of the best I've ever seen.

Play Arts Kai has provided an additional pair of hands, one Batarang, and a grappling hook. Although you don't get some items as offered by the HT Bruce Wayne set, this set is nothing to scoff at either. Check out the picture above:

Value - 5/5
For the price you're paying here, this figure is not meant to be played with, but be ready for friends to notice Batman right away amongst your collection of Marvel Select and Legends. For the price, it's on par with Hot Toys, GG, and SideShow. At the time of this posting, I paid around $50.00 plus shipping.

The Final Word - 5/5
Play Arts Kai has hit it out of the park with their Batman No. 1 from the Arkham Asylum series. This figure is superior in every way, from the sculpt to the paint. Although some accessories were lacking, it wasn't enough to change my grade. If you have the chance to purchase one, I suggest you make the investment. It's clearly the best figure in this size since the MS series.
