Movie Review: Only the Brave

Only the Brave tells the wrong story and misses a potential golden opportunity for Oscar glory.
Review by Matt Cummings
With wildfires still pummeling Northern California, Only the Brave arrives to remind us about those who serve to stop from engulfing our towns and cities. Unfortunately, it's way too long and misses perhaps the most important angle: the one person who survived.

Fighting wildfires requires a team of dedicated firefighters called Hot Shots, who manage the fire by digging trenches and using little water in the process. Hoping to make his team into an elite Type 1 unit, Eric Marsh (Josh Brolin) enlists the help of division chief and friend Duane Steinbrink (Jeff Bridges) to gain the needed certification. But it will be an uphill battle, as Marsh keeps replacing men who join other Type 1 crews for more money. One of those recruits is former drug addict McDonough (Miles Teller), who's trying to raise his baby daughter out of wedlock. He instantly conflicts with…

I, TONYA Teaser Trailer Starring Margot Robbie

Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, TONYA is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden.

An original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie’s I, TONYA is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked––and checkered––glory.

The Han Solo Movie Is Titled SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

After a lengthy and eventful shoot (which started way back in January, saw the original directors removed, and a new one installed), the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off movie has finally finished filming. And it no longer goes by the snappy working title of Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Spin-off Movie. In a characteristic bit of social media engagement, director Ron Howard posted a video revealing the official title (with help from a wookiee pal) as Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Hey #Twitterville we just wrapped production so here's a special message #StarWarspic.twitter.com/8QJqN5BGxr — Ron Howard (@RealRonHoward) October 17, 2017

The title is perhaps the second-least surprising name for a Star Wars story centering around a character named Han Solo, but a proper title certainly makes things feel more official – while the 'Star Wars Story' element keeps it on brand with last year's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film now dives headfirst into months of post-production, aiming…

THR is reporting Cher is heading back to the big screen for the first time in seven years.

The singer-actress has joined the cast of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the all-star sequel to the global musical hit.

Cher’s character details are being kept under wraps. She teased out the news over the weekend with several tweets.

The movie also has younger versions of the characters portrayed by the veterans, played by Lily James, Alexa Davies, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan and Hugh Skinner.

Ol Parker, writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, penned the script from a story concocted by himself, Catherine Johnson and Richard Curtis. Parker is also directing the movie, which is currently in production.

The role will mark Cher’s first movie appearance since 2010’s Burlesque, in which she co-starred with Christina Aguilera. She has been nominated twice for an Academy Award, winning a best actress statuette for her work in 1987's Moonstruck.

Reboot Of Nancy Drew Starring @sarahshahi Could Be Heading To NBC

NBC is trying its hand at Nancy Drew.

More than a year after CBS passed on its Sarah Shahi-fronted Nancy Drew, NBC is teaming with Tony Phelan and Joan Rater to redevelop the drama.

The project, which is in development, has an entirely new logline at CBS despite hailing from the same producing team and studio (CBS Television Studios). Here's the new logline: "When the author of the most famous female teen detective series is thrust into a real-life murder mystery, who does she turn to for help? Her two best friends from childhood, who were the inspiration for all those books, and the women who have a real ax to grind about the way their supposed best friend chose to portray them all those years ago."

The CBS version, which made headlines for its inclusive casting of Person of Interest grad Shahi, went to pilot and was described as a contemporary take on the character from the book series. It starred Shahi as Nancy, now in her 30s and working as a detective for the NYPD …

#HappyDeathDay Scares The Box Office

Cementing a very successful period for the company, Blumhouse Productions' Happy Death Day blew past the second weekend of Blade Runner 2049 to nab the top spot at the US box office with $26.5 million, according to studio estimates.

It's an impressive initial haul for the time-looping slasher comedy, which was made for the typically thrifty Blumhouse price of a little less than $5 million. And adding in its limited foreign business so far, the movie has made $31.5 million. By contrast, the Blade Runner sequel, which cost an estimated $150 million (not including marketing) earned $15.1 million this weekend after a launch that saw it win the charts but underperform in terms of expectations. The movie is now on $60.5 million in the States.

Jackie Chan's new action movie The Foreigner entered the charts at third with $12.8 million, while It slipped to fourth on $6 million. Rounding out the top five was The Mountain Between Us, which took a tumble and made $5.6 million.
