Quicksilver Joins X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Here’s a turn-up for the (comic) books and no mistake: mere days after Joss Whedon talked about using the characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in the Avengers sequel, Bryan Singer has tweeted that he’s cast Evan Peters as Quicksilver in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. What's curious is that the original tweet in question has now been deleted - here's a screengrab of what it looked like and the full text is below - and was replaced with an Avengers-free missive, also below.

Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.
— Bryan Singer (@BryanSinger) May 23, 2013
So Singer has announced that Peters – who already has a comic book film credit to his name with Kick-Ass’ Todd – is on board for the movie. In case you’re busy spluttering and wondering how he could conceivably turn up in two studio franchises, Pietro (AKA Quicksilver) and twin sister Scarlet Witch (real name: Wanda) are two of several characters spawned by the X-Men comics universe whose rights are jointly held by 20th Fox and Marvel/Disney. We've discussed the characters' tangled histories in a bit more depth here.

Quicksilver showing up in Days Of Future Past makes some sense: he and his sister are, after all, Magneto’s children, even if ol’ Erik Lensherr in the comics wasn’t aware of that for a long time. However, how he will fit in to the already sprawling cast and fighting-the-dark-future-timeline plot is still a mystery, and he won’t have a the biggest part to play given the late-stage casting, but it’s still an intriguing idea that we could see Magneto interacting with his son (we're assuming he'll be aware of the relationship here). Also: which Magneto? We're guessing this would be McKellen's version, since Fassbender seems a little youthful to be Peters' father.

Even more audaciously, could Peters conceivably be shown first in Days Of Future Past and then crop up in the Avengers sequel? It's unlikely, since Singer's version is a younger man in Days, and Whedon may have different plans for the character, but Feige's expressed openness to the idea of reuniting all Marvel characters in one cohesive universe, whatever studios hold the rights, so it's not completely beyond the pale. At the other end of the spectrum of possibilities, will this lead Whedon to reconsider his plans to include the brother and sister?

X-Men: Days Of Future Past already includes Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Anna Paquin, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Fan Bingbing and more. In fact, it’s getting to the point where it’ll be easier to list the people NOT in the film. It’ll arrive on July 17 next year. In case you have no idea who we're on about when we talk about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, head to the informative briefing on the characters right here.

Tom Cruise Drops Out Of U.N.C.L.E. To Concentrate On MI:5

Tom Cruise has exited as the lead in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., the remake of the classic TV series that Guy Ritchie will direct for Warner Bros. Cruise was scheduled to star in the film with Armie Hammer, but he has stepped out of the picture to focus on producing and starring in Mission: Impossible 5. Paramount and Skydance are now planning to begin shooting the latest installment of that franchise before year’s end. Warner Bros has a script they like, and a top director who’s expecting to direct U.N.C.L.E. in the fall. The timing proved too difficult and so Cruise stepped out to focus on M:I5.

Warner Bros will now go hard looking for the lead of this movie, which is inspired by the original TV series ran from 1964-68, with Robert Vaughan and David McCallum playing Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, two agents of the United Network Command for Law Enforcement. With gadgets and their wits and charm, they fought the evil forces of Thrush. Hammer, who’ll be seen shortly alongside Johnny Depp in the Gore Verbinski-directed The Lone Ranger, is still firmly in the film.

While it might seem that Cruise could squeeze in the film before moving to M:I5, that’s not the way he has worked on the Paramount franchise. In the last film, Ghost Protocol, he was heavily involved in planning and performing death defying stunts that included running along the glass exterior of a skyscraper in Abu Dhabi, about 124 floors high. He’ll want to do something to top that, so while the script is being written by Drew Pearce for Cruise’s Jack Reacher helmer Christopher McQuarrie to direct, this is an accelerated process and it will become the focus of the rest of the year for Cruise. The actor remains on good terms with Warner Bros, recently completing the Doug Liman-directed science fiction film All You Need Is Kill, which will be released June 6, 2014.

Epic Review, Nothing You Haven't Seen Before

Epic Review
By: MattInRC

Epic is funny, entertaining, and yet ultimately forgettable.

20th Century Fox Animation is not exactly known for developing a long line of successful animated fare. With the exception of the fun but unremarkable Ice Age series, Fox is still searching for a stable of animated franchises. Their newest candidate Epic is not the kind of film that stands out or dares to be noticed, as so many need to be given the crowded space they currently share at the multiplex. And while it's entertaining, one could easily miss Epic in a lineup of big summer films.

Based on the William Joyce children's book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, our film follows the exploits of the teenager MK (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) and her estranged father Professor Bomba (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), as both uncover a world of tiny creatures living in a nearby forest. Bomba's research to prove this race exists has taken a toll on his family, as the mother first separated then died of an unknown reason, forcing MK to return home to deal with her crackpot father. What the motherless family soon realizes is that a war is raging for control of that same forest between the peaceful Leafmen and the evil Boggins, led by Mandrake (voiced by Christoph Waltz). Mandrake will do whatever's necessary to kill the Leafmen's Queen Tara (voiced by singer Beyonce Knowles), who must soon choose an heir. She is protected by her childhood friend and Ronin (voiced by Colin Farrell), leader of the Leafmen and stand-in father to Nod (voiced by Josh Hutcherson). His father died at the hands of Mandrake and has since become a fierce but unpredictable warrior. When MK is accidentally shrunk into the Leafmen's world, she becomes caught in the middle of the conflict, and must work to save both the forest and any chances she might have to return home to her father.

Epic is nothing you haven't seen before, complete with yet another enchanted forest, the comedy team, the serious moment, and a resolution where good triumphs over evil. But Epic also contains two death scenes and a twist of an ending that helps to slightly redeem itself. It's unlikely that girls will relate to MK as they did with Brave, mostly because her relationship with the father and the untimely end of her mother are never fully explored. You know MK and dad don't get along, and that the mother died, but that's about as deep as it gets. Separation and divorce have unfortunately become front-burner items for today's kids, and Epic's writing team including Tom J. Astle missed a golden opportunity to carry above the film's merely entertaining aspects. Blame should also be placed at the feet of animated veteran Director Chris Wedge (Ice Age series), who fails to inspire any real emotion from his voice actors. An animated film relies so heavily on it actors, and Wedge's mostly flat cast just doesn't get it done. Sudeikis and Aziz Ansari (as a very funny slug) are the only bright spots here, with the normally very good Farrell, Waltz, and Seyfried leading a charge of unimpressive performances.

Instead of stretching the boundaries of the genre, Epic is the kind of animated film that Fox doesn't quite get right. In a summer filled with strong competition, films like this are churned out by studios to merely entertain. The film misses a golden opportunity to better develop the strained father/daughter relationship, settling instead on less-memorable action and comedic gags. Families will be entertained by Epic; just don't expect to remember a thing about it afterwards. Epic is rated PG and has a runtime of 102 minutes.

We’re The Millers Red Band Trailer. Jennifer Aniston Takes It Off

We’re The Millers. Now a version of that trailer is online via Warners’ YouTube account for you all to watch.

Warning: it’s a Red Band promo, so expect swearing and gross-out gags…

We’re The Millers finds small-scale pot dealer David Burke (Sudeikis) getting into a spot of bother when Ed Helms' sleazy kingpin offers him a potentially lucrative job: smuggle a batch of pot across the border from Mexico back into the US and Burke will score $100,000.

There’s a hitch, however. If he goes across alone, he’ll look suspicious. So Burke nabs an RV and starts to recruit a fake family to hide the fact that he’ll be transporting several kilos of marijuana. Neighbourhood no-good nerd Kenny (Will Poulter) will be his son; crafty Casey (Emma Roberts) his daughter and stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) is the woman he asks to be his fake wife.

When they reach Mexico, they discover the haul is significantly bigger than they thought; and that’s just the start of their problems, which include randy fellow travellers (Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn on good form) and a nasty tarantula bite that leaves Kenny with some trouble in the trouser department.

While there are moments that might make you roll your eyes – of course Aniston’s stripper history is going to come into play at some point –

FAST & FURIOUS 6 Review. Absolutely Devilish Entertainment

FAST & FURIOUS 6 Review
By: MattInRC

FAST & FURIOUS 6 is absolutely devilish entertainment. And we're OK with that.

Before I get into this review, let's get one thing straight: The Fast and The Furious films are not exactly The Italian Job, nor do they try to be. When you pay the big bucks to sit in a film like this, you know what you're going to get - implausible car chases that defy the laws of physics, bro-mance humor, and badass chicks driving fast cars while extras in skimpy clothes and knee-high boots dance behind them. And while it's not the smart, highly-detailed action/drama of a Skyfall, the franchise has matured over the years, settling in on fun action with enough story to keep things moving. As FAST & FURIOUS 6 opens this week, the boys (and girls) are back with enough stunts and twists to satiate anyone's appetite.

Fresh off their mammoth heist in Rio, the team has scattered to either find a quiet patch of life or live high from their earnings. Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) are raising their first child, while Dom (Vin Deisel) is still haunted by the loss of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). Gisele (Gal Gadot) and Han (Sung Kang) are living in Tokyo, while Roman (Tyrese Gibson, Transformers series) and Tej (Ludacris) do what they do best: spend. That all changes when DSS Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson, Snitch) returns to enlist Dom and Brian to hunt down the international terrorist Owen Shaw (Luke Evans, Raven), who uses military tactics and armored vehicles to thwart the authorities. But this time, Shaw has upped the ante in hopes of stealing components for a Nightshade device. Assembled, Nighshade will render an entire country without power for 24 hours, and the terrorist wants to sell it to the highest bidder. Upon reassembling the team, Brian and Dom realize that Shaw and his team are no ordinary thugs who can be hunted down with fast cars, but are instead cold-blooded killers who will use any and all means to achieve their goals. As one team chases the other around Europe, Dom learns that an important character from his past (no spoilers here) is in fact alive and has teamed up with Shaw. With lives hanging in the balance, Dom's team must take out Shaw and his men before the device is assembled and carted away on a cargo plane.

There's so much going on in Fast Six that the trailers (luckily) don't tell the whole story. It represents the first true summer flick, complete with plenty of explosions, gunfire, incomprehensible action sequences, and funny comebacks, all surrounded by a competent story and cast. Walker and Deisel represent the sum parts of the whole, while Evans makes a terrific bad guy who should have been penned through a couple of films. He's the kind of dashing but deadly villain that can match up with Dom in every way, which makes his defeat here all the more disappointing. In the middle of this, you have NOS-flavored racing, large American engines rumbling their way through a scene, and the requisite scantily-clad female dancers at races. This is not a film for the logical mind, but with the title Fast and Furious, you weren't paying to see high-brow entertainment. FF franchise Director Justin Lin once again delivers an impressive and fast-paced film, nimbly merging new and impressive stunts with long-time collaborator and Writer Chris Morgan's funny and well-polished script. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of 'benefit of the doubt' scenes here, but they work so well that we can't be too critical. And with a end-credits scene that will have people talking, it's clear that the franchise won't be racing into the sunset any time soon.

In what might stand as the last true action franchise around, Fast Six offers something for everyone who loves the concept of Summer action films. If the words 'plausibility' and 'realism' enter your vocabulary when it comes to Summer films, look elsewhere. If you're able to check them comfortably at the door, with the words 'jocularity' and 'edge-of-your-seat action' taking over, then you'll thoroughly enjoy yourself with this one. After all, we don't visit summer movies just to go slow.

Fast Six is rated R for action and violence, has a runtime of 130 minutes, and is highly recommended.

New The Wolverine Trailer. Extra Footage

James Mangold's take on the critically-acclaimed run of Marvel comics known as The Wolverine has been blessed with another trailer. This one's got lots more Jean Grey, a gag involving super sharp katanas, a lady with a snake tongue where her human one should be and a smidge more footage of that Silver Samurai who people keep talking about.

Much of what's shown has already seen in the first full-length teaser - for a trailer breakdown, head this way - and the more recent Cinema Con video, but you get to see longer sections of certain scenes here, which allows for a better taste of what to expect from the whole film.

New The World's End Trailer

Most pub crawls have a sticky ending, one way or another. Some finish with fisticuffs, many with vomit, others with a mere killer hangover. But The World's End promises to take things to a whole new level with an apocalyptic outcome to the reunion of five old friends.

The film sees Simon Pegg as something of a failure in life, who sees a chance to recreate his teenage glory days by reuniting his old friends to complete the pub crawl they once abandoned. Only it turns out that their home town has changed in the years since they left: now it's crawling with what look very much like alien invaders. Uh. Oh.

The World's End stars Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Martin Freeman and Paddy Considine with Pegg as the central quintet of drinkers; Rosamund Pike plays Freeman's sister (and Pegg's old flame) and you'll see a few more familiar faces pop up in this trailer. Edgar Wright, of course, directs this finale to the Blood And Ice Cream trilogy.

Marc Shmuger will produce the film via his Universal-based Global Produce banner alongside Tom McNulty.

Timecop, a Universal library title, was set in the near future where time travel is regulated by a police force. One officer (Van Damme) runs afoul a crooked politician (played by Ron Silver) using time travel to further his political career.

It was based on a story published by Dark Horse Comics (the movie’s script was co-written by Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson) and was one of Van Damme’s most successful films, both financially and critically.

Timecop also proved to be a mini-franchise for the studio, spawning a short-lived 1997 TV series on ABC and a direct-to-DVD sequel with an all-new cast.

The studio is approaching the new Timecop as a reboot and a re-imagining of the concept and is out to writers. Van Damme is not involved.

Hangover III Review. Delivers Nothing New Or Inventive.

Hangover III Review
By: MattInRC

Hangover III gives one an after-party headache that no medicine can relieve.

Disappointing, anti-climactic, and tedious, Hangover III delivers nothing new or inventive, settling in for moments of nostalgia surrounded by genuinely unfunny humor. The way we felt after the first film is long gone, replaced by Zach Galifianakis just doing one stupid unfunny thing after another.

With the death of his father, the black sheep Alan (Zach Galifianakis, The Campaign) is suddenly the center of attention, as his friends Stu (Ed Helms, The Office), Doug (Justin Bartha, National Treasure), and Phil (Bradley Cooper, Limitless) lead an intervention to force Alan into treatment. Their car ride to Arizona is rudely interrupted with their kidnapping by the notorious gangster Marshall (John Goodman, O Brother, Where Art Thou?). Apparently, the 'virus' Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong, Pineapple Express) has stolen millions from Marshall, disappearing since his escape from a Thai prison. Marshall holds Doug while ordering the rest of The Wolf Pack to find Chow. This leads the boys to Tijuana and eventually back where it all started: Las Vegas. As the boys track Chow to Vegas, Alan meets and falls for the owner of a pawn shop (Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids). Friends are reunited, marriage vows rings the halls again, blah blah blah.

If you saw the sleeper-fest American Reunion, you could almost graft Hangover III right on top of it in terms of its effect. Everyone is grown up, people are tired of Alan, weird things still happen, comedy ensues. But this time, so little of it feels right, including the actors themselves. The now very popular (and honestly better than this) Cooper feels entirely out of place, with a permanent 'contract fulfilled' look on his face. The tattoo-less Helms is there merely to react to Galifianakis, who he himself isn't that funny. The moments that the film could have descended into memorable humor - with McCarthy's story limited to just a few scenes, and Goodman's bi-polar gangster portrayal few and far between - are ditched for a very familiar story about The Wolf Pack. Their procedural antics occur as - once again - Bartha remains in the background. There are a few cameos, but nothing too surprising or even necessary - frankly a film in which Heather Graham appears without exposing herself is not really worth watching. Even the normally irascible Jeong feels a little boring and even predictable. The only funny part of the film is the end credits, a 'Hey, we forgot to add this little thing' short that should have been the basis for the entire movie. Instead, we got the final chapter in what needs to be the final chapter.

I was such a fan of the original Hangover for so many reasons: over-the-top raunch, surrounded by good actors who had great chemistry. Most of that is gone now, replaced with a dull center of a story that could have been so much better. In so many ways, Hangover III feels like the events it characterizes, that of a one-night stand which seemed fun at the time but has now deteriorated into something less attractive. And like that date who won't stop calling you back, it's time to change your phone number. The film will probably make a lot of money, entertaining crowds in the meantime, but we deserve better than this. That's what we got in 2009, when comedy and raunch drank from the same bottle, ended up in bed together, and let loose their imaginations. This party should be over. Hangover III is rated R for...well...everything and has a runtime of 100 minutes.

RICHARD M. SHERMAN & ALAN MENKEN TOGETHER AT D23 FOR PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME

DISNEY LEGENDS RICHARD M. SHERMAN AND ALAN MENKEN JOIN FORCES FOR A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME CONCERT.

The two Academy Award®-winning composers share the stage for one night only performing “The Disney Songbook” at the D23 Expo 2013, Saturday, August 10

For one night only, two of the world’s most celebrated songwriters and composers will take to the stage for “Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken: The Disney Songbook.” The concert will take place at the D23 Expo 2013 at the Anaheim Convention Center in the D23 Expo Arena on Saturday, August 10.

Together Sherman and Menken have won a combined 10 Academy Awards for their work with Disney, and have composed music and songs for more than three dozen Disney feature films, over two dozen Disney Park attractions and half a dozen Disney musicals on Broadway.

“I can’t express how excited I am that my esteemed friend Alan Menken and I will be sharing the same bill for the very first time,” said Sherman . “Alan is an incredible talent, and I know we’re both thrilled to be performing for Disney’s most ardent fans—they’re the best and I can’t wait to be a part of what promises to be a very special night for all of us.”

“Richard Sherman and I share so many things; our cherished association with The Walt Disney Company, the blessing of having the opportunity to share our musical talents with "children of all ages" and a genuine mutual admiration—but one thing we've never gotten to share is a concert stage,” said Menken. “This summer at the D23 Expo 2013, we will do just that. And I can't think of anyone I'd prefer to share that stage with. Richard, along with his brother Robert, wrote songs that filled my formative years with joy and fantasy. And, all these years later, I can say with complete honesty that there is no one I've met in our business who is more warm and generous than my friend and fellow songwriter, Richard Sherman.”

Admission to the concert will be on a first-come, first-served basis and is included in the price of a ticket to the D23 Expo. In addition to the 4,000-seat D23 Expo Arena, the concert will be simulcast into a 2,000-seat overflow theater inside the Convention Center.

Richard M. Sherman and his brother Robert B. Sherman composed some of the most beloved songs in the Disney canon. The Disney Legends won two Oscars® for their work on Mary Poppins, and during their decades–long association with Disney they wrote more than 200 songs for 27 films and two dozen television productions. They made unforgettable contributions to such Disney films as The Parent Trap, The Jungle Book, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and the entire Winnie the Pooh series, as well as the family classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. They also penned beloved songs for Disney Parks including the theme songs for Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, it’s a small world, and Carousel of Progress. Richard wrote the song “Make Way for Tomorrow Today” for the blockbuster film Iron Man 2, and is working on a new stage musical based on Walt Disney’s 1967 animated film classic The Jungle Book, premiering this June at the Goodman Theater in Chicago.

With eight Academy Awards, Alan Menken has received more Oscars than any living person. He has written songs and scores for some of the world’s most beloved films: Tangled (Oscar nominee), Enchanted (three Oscar nominations) The Little Mermaid (two Oscar wins), Beauty and the Beast (two Oscar wins), Aladdin (two Oscar wins), Pocahontas (two Oscar wins), Hercules (Oscar nominee), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Oscar nominee), Little Shop of Horrors (Oscar nominee), Home on the Range and Newsies. His song “Star Spangled Man,” was the patriotic anthem of the 2011 hit film Captain America: The First Avenger.

Menken’s Broadway successes include his 2012 Tony Award® for Newsies, plus The Little Mermaid (Tony Award nominee), Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors, and Sister Act (Tony Award nominee). His other stage productions include King David, God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and his latest stage production Aladdin: The New Musical, opening next year. At Disney Parks, Menken added an exclusive ballad (“To Be Free”) to his song score for Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular at Disney California Adventure and penned “Compass of Your Heart,” the catchy theme song for the attraction Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage at Tokyo DisneySea
