New Terminator Film Has Found It's Writers

Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures have set Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier to script the next installment of The Terminator franchise.

Her credits include Avatar, Shutter Island and Alexander, produced White House Down. Lussier scripted Wes Craven’s Dracula and My Bloody Valentine. Skydance’s David Ellison recently hired the scribes to write an original scifi adventure film, with an idea initiated by Skydance.

Megan Ellison paid a fortune for the rights several years ago, and recently teamed with brother David, whose company finds big ticket action films like Terminator to be in its wheelhouse. David, who just produced Jack Reacher, had the relationship with the scribes, though interestingly Kalogridis also is tight with Terminator creator James Cameron. Megan Ellison is in the thick of the Oscar race with Zero Dark Thirty and The Master.

Are You Ready For More Hot Tub Time Machine?

Anyone fancy another dip in the hot tub?

MGM is in early talks to draw up plans for a sequel to its 2010 comedy Hot Tub Time Machine.

The company is in what insiders characterize as “exploratory talks” with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke to reprise their roles for the follow-up. Corddry could end up being involved in fashioning a script with Steve Pink, the director of the original who is in talks to return to direct the sequel.

John Cusack, who also starred in the original, is not involved at this point. The pieces have slowly been coming together for the past several months and sources caution that deal-making is in an early stage and could fail. However, insiders also say that if a deal makes, production would be fast-tracked.

HHTM was the last movie produced under Mary Parent‘s run at MGM, before the company went into bankruptcy. The $36 million movie grossed around $50 million at the box office but proved to be a massive home entertainment hit.

The movie centered on four men, bored and unhappy with their lives, who travel back in time via a hot tub to a fateful night of their teenaged years in the 1980s. The movie, which also starred Chevy Chase, was a love letter to '80s teen comedies but seen through a modern -- somewhat coarse -- lens.

THE LAST STAND Review.Welcome Back Arnold

THE LAST STAND Review
By: RAMA

Let see if RAMA thought the film was worth the wait.

Let us all say welcome back to Arnold and his cheesy one liners. How we missed them! THE LAST STAND reminds us that even though Arnold Schwarzenegger may have failed as both a governor and a husband, .. he’s still got it as an action star. Yes, THE LAST STAND is hilariously bad and at the end it would make you wonder ‘who wrote this piece of crap’ but let’s face it, this is basically, more or less, the same type of action films that we grew up watching Arnold in, where he’d always have the last word after he kills the baddies. So again, welcome back, Arnold!..

After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy.

I laughed so hard through the entire film. Some of the humor were intentional, thanks to comic relief Johnny Knoxville, and some were because the script and the directing were just awful, but some because after so many years of not having Arnold be a lead action star on the big screen, we’re going through that phase of trying to get used to his image and his heavy accented speech all over again, after so many years, they’ve become foreign (no pun intended), and so seeing his many exaggerated intense facial expressions and hearing him mispronounce words again, serve for a big laugh. This time he plays an old Sheriff wanting to get away from the violent old days but violence is coming to his town and he and his few, bumbling, incompetent posse would have to defend it.

They even throw one cheesy quick romance between Jaimie Alexander and Rodrigo Santoro and it comes across as unnecessary, so that’s another reason for laughter. But this movie offers a lot of elements for us fans of old school action flicks while catering to today’s generation. Firepower, machine gun, good guys outnumbered by the bad guys, even fast car chases. Even Arnold got to fight MMA style with the lead villain, something that I don’t remember Arnold has ever done in his movie in the past, so that’s refreshing.

When you see Arnold on the screen, you’d see how old he’s gotten, even his character doesn’t shy away from that, which is probably one of the reasons he signed on to this job. Arnold knows he’s old, his character knows his better days are behind him, but it ain’t over til the last bullet drop.

So once again, I invite you to join me and say: Welcome back, Arnold!

Crawlspace Review. Decent Horror Flick

Crawlspace  Review
By: MattInRC

The low-budget Crawlspace doesn't look like it, delivering a decent horror flick experience.

At SJF, we've reviewed plenty of low-budget horror tripe. On the surface, Crawlspace appeared to be yet another of these throw-away flicks; we're inclined to let it sit a moment longer than the others we've merely tossed into the abyss.

When a top-secret medical lab in Australia comes under attack from an unknown force, an elite squad of soldiers is tasked with rescuing the science team. What the soldiers do not know is that problem at Pine Gap is not some alien creature but a human experiment gone wrong in the form of Eve (Amber Clayton). Having endured a tricky surgery by merging an alien brain with her own, Eve has developed enormous mental powers beyond her own simple telekinesis. Eve awakens frightened and unable to remember who she is, but possessing the charming scars of her recent experience. The strike team sent to deal with the situation has no idea what they're getting into; led by Romeo (Ditch Davey) and ordered to eliminate any escaped prisoners, Eve begins to use her powers to control Romeo, leading him to believe that she is his dead girlfriend. At first, Romeo refuses to kill Eve, choosing instead to drag her back while his team is destroyed by their own worst fears, courtesy of Eve. The couple soon meet Caesar (Nicholas Bell), the leader of science team, who suggests Romeo treat Eve as a hostile. Faced with a looming deadline of nuclear annihilation Romeo must decide whether to save Eve, or follow Caesar's stern warning.

Fusing several classic sci-fi/horror flicks into an 80-minute trip, Director Justin Dix throws in everything from medical experiments ala Scanners to blazing gun battles that remind one of Aliens. Granted, nothing here is done quite so well as those classics, but Crawlspace does a fair job of entertaining. It's creative, merging military tactics alien tech, and mental manipulation while Dix amps up the human/horror tension along the way. By the end, we're a little disoriented from all the plot twists - I assume this was Dix's plan from the start, but the effect is not as confusing as it could have been. Dix has a fair grasp on the human psyche, and this knowledge pays off in a film that probably deserved a longer runtime than it received. Had Crawlspace been given such levity we might have witnessed a true surprise hit; instead, we're left with a diamond in the rough, waiting for a real studio to pay it proper attention.

If your Blockbuster or Netflix queue is back-ordered and you need a momentary alien/gunfight distraction in tight spaces (hence the title), Crawlspace might fit the bill. It's rated R for violence and language and has a runtime of 80 minutes.

New EMANUEL AND THE TRUTH ABOUT FISHES Clip

We are pleased to announce a new film clip from Francesca Gregorini's EMANUEL AND THE TRUTH ABOUT FISHES starring Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario, Alfred Molina, Frances O'Connor, and Aneurin Barnard debuted on HITFIX yesterday. The film will premiere at this week's Sundance Film Festival.

Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), an acerbic but sensitive teen, lives with her father (Alfred Molina) and stepmother (Frances O'Conner). She's on the verge of another birthday-a day she has never cared for since her mother died giving birth to her-when the mysterious Linda (Jessica Biel), a young and hip mother, moves in next door. Intrigued by Linda's striking resemblance to her late mother, Emanuel begins to babysit for Linda's newborn daughter. As Emanuel and Linda spend more time together, they develop a bond that becomes deeply entwined in a surprising secret Linda harbors.

EMANUEL AND THE TRUTH ABOUT FISHES is a hyperstylized and often darkly humorous film that vacillates between surrealism and realism while it incorporates suspenseful drama. Writer/director Francesca Gregorini's tightly constructed script fuses pain with poetry and explores the complexity of being complicit in the lives of our loved ones. In a breakout performance, Kaya Scodelario is the heart of the film as Emanuel, who must take a courageous journey to enter her dream and help extract Linda from hers. - K. Y. (2013 Sundance Film Festival Catalog)

The film is written and directed by Francesca Gregorini (TANNER HALL) and starring Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario (WUTHERING HEIGHTS), Alfred Molina ("Harry's Law"), Frances O'Connor ("Cashmere Mafia"), Aneurin Barnard (CINTADEL) and Jimmi Simpson (DATE NIGHT).

THE ICEMAN Trailer #2

Watch the trailer for THE ICEMAN, starring Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, and Chris Evans! In case you haven’t been following the film’s slow-cooked development, no, The Iceman is not the continuing adventures of Val Kilmer’s narky pilot from Top Gun. It is, in fact, the strange-but-true story of mob assassin Richard Kuklinski.

Shannon plays Kuklinski, a man who led a strictly separate double life. To his wife Deborah (Winona Ryder), he was a loving, attentive family man and business type who was gainfully employed. But his other existence was something quite different: he specialised in untraceable killings and got his nickname thanks to his habit of freezing his victims post mortem to keep them from the prying detection of the police and forensics investigators.

Chris Evans is co-starring as Robert Pronge, who helped teach Kuklinski the ways of the assassin, with Ray Liotta as a mob boss. Ariel Vroman is the director and co-writer who dragged this one to the screen based on Anthony Bruno’s book The Iceman: The True Story Of A Cold-Blooded Killer and filmed interviews conducted with those who knew Kuklinski.

Anne Hathaway Wants The Taming Of The Shrew

She’s the proud owner of a Golden Globe after this weekend’s ceremony, and seems on track to likely add an Oscar to her collection. But with musicals now crossed off her To Do list, Les Miserables' Anne Hathaway has set her sights on Shakespeare with a new version of The Taming Of The Shrew.

According to The Wrap, Shame’s Abi Morgan is writing the fresh take on the Bard’s battle of the sexes, updating the plot to mid-20th century Italy.

It would hardly be the first time someone has thought to make Shrew into a new format: it was the basis for the musical Kiss Me Kate, which launched in Broadway in 1951 and ended up a 1967 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Then there’s 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You, which set the events in high school.

Working Title is producing this latest adaptation, and it’s no surprise that the company’s Miserables star would be at the top of the wish list. Hathaway’s schedule is also pretty free at the moment, since she had been talking about Steven Spielberg’s recently delayed Robopocalypse. Though she has a variety of other projects simmering away, including a Judy Garland biopic and music romance Song One, everything is still in development. Her only current commitment is voicing Jewel in Fox/Blue Sky’s Rio sequel.

New Carrie Poster. God Won't Help You

It took a while to get a real, official poster for Kimberly Peirce’s remake of Stephen King horror tale Carrie out in the world. That image, of a bloodied Chloe Moretz slotted firmly into the big-face-with-writing poster genre, and the spirit continues with a haggard-looking Julianne Moore as her fundamentalist mother, Margaret White.

Featuring just a hint of the red stuff this time (check out her eyes), the picture sees Moore look a lot more terrifying than she usually does. Margaret, of course, is the obsessive, Bible-loving woman who decides her daughter’s newfound telekinetic powers are evil.

With Judy Greer, Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday, Alex Russell and Michelle Nolden also in the cast.
