Area 51 To Finally See Release

Alien film will escape from the vault. By Brandon Wolfe Shortly after Paranormal Activity exploded as a sleeper hit in Fall 2009, its director, Oren Peli, immediately began work on an alien-themed, found-footage companion piece titled Area 51 . Though completed, the film never saw release for whatever reason, winding up locked away in the sort of secure facility reminiscent of the titular military base. After so much time on ice, it seemed like Area 51 would never see the light of day, yet a surprise announcement today has changed its fate. The film will now open in very limited release from Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17 only at select Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations, and even then, only showing once per day. Fortunately, it will also be made available on VOD and digital platforms on May 15. Area 51 , written and directed by Peli and produced by the horror-ubiquitous Jason Blum, is the story of a UFO-obsessed teen who convinces a couple of his friends to cut sho

Movie Review: Unfriended

Where's my Dislike button? Review by Brandon Wolfe The runaway success of Paranormal Activity was the point where the found-footage format crossed over into the mainstream ( The Blair Witch Project was obviously the subgenre’s first hit, but it spent the decade following its release as a one-off curio rather than a trendsetter), spearheading the opportunity for filmmakers to crank out cost-effective horror films that didn’t require slick production values or expensive equipment. They could be produced with recording devices you could get at Best Buy and were expected, even encouraged, to look like they were shot by shaky-handed amateurs. Given its low-overhead accessibility, the subgenre has become so ubiquitous that filmmakers are now having to figure out ways to make the achingly familiar seem new again. So instead of horror films shot on consumer-based cameras, how about one shot entirely on Skype? That’s something new, yes? Unfriended sure wants you to think it is.

Paramount sets dates for The Ring, Paranormal Activity and Friday the 13th Sequels

Three spooky sequels find new release dates. By Brandon Wolfe Paramount has shuffled its horror-movie deck as it has set new dates for three upcoming sequels, according to Variety . First up is the second sequel to 2002’s The Ring , carrying the Cameron-esque title Rings , which will bow on November 13, more than a decade after the release of the previous installment, 2005’s abysmal The Ring Two . The other two films, both of which are being pushed back significantly, are Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension , which is moving from March 13 to October 23 (the date recently vacated by the Conjuring sequel), and the latest reboot attempt for Friday the 13th , bumped from November 13 to May 13 (which still affords it a release date on a Friday the 13th). This move isn’t surprising for the sixth Paranormal Activity , which seemed unlikely to make that rapidly approaching March date due to the complete lack of any form of promotion thus far. October is the franchise’s home b

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES Review. Doesn't Possess Us In The Least.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES Review By: MattInRC The first film of 2014 - Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones - doesn't possess us in the least. Back in 2007, the Paranormal Activity franchise was riding high. Cashing in on the formula that made The Blair Witch Project such a stunning success, Paramount showed bold flexibility in turning a small production into box office gold. The idea of hand-cam movies in horror is a brilliant concept, with many films failing desperately to mimic them. But since 2007, this franchise has looked like a shadow of its former self, and three films later, Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones utterly fails to possess us or even keep our attention. This spin-off shares the story of a recent high school Latino graduate Jesse ( Andrew Jacobs ) and his best friend Hector ( Jorge Diaz ) as they play around with Hector's new video camera, documenting their lives in the barrio. They get chased by local thugs, ride down the

Paranormal Activity 4 Is Happening

Horror fans can mark it down in their calendars -- there will be a Paranormal Activity 4 in 2012. Paramount officially revealed Monday it is pursuing another chapter in the hit Halloween franchise, though it hasn't yet dated the movie. Already set to open on Oct. 26 is Dimension Films' Halloween 3D . The success of the Paranormal Activity films, made on a shoestring budget, is a sizable victory for Paramount and producers Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider. Paranormal Activity 3 grossed $202.2 million worldwide -- besting the first two films, unusual for a third outing. Paranormal Activity 3 opened to a massive $54 million at the domestic box office during the Oct. 21-23 weekend in 2011 -- the top launch of all time for a horror pic and the best October debut ever. The first Paranormal, which cost $15,000 to produce and opened in a limited run in September 2009, went on to gross $193.4 million worldwide. Paranormal 2 cost $3 million to produce and grossed $177

Paranormal Activity 3 Movie Review By: Brandon Wolfe

Paranormal Activity 3 Movie Review By: Brandon Wolfe Please welcome guest reviewer Brandon Wolfe . He is a simple man. Uncomplicated-simple, not dumb-simple, of course. Released in 2009, the original Paranormal Activity was a breath of fresh air for horror fans weary from too many years in the torture-porn ghetto with the Saw franchise and its myriad descendants. But it was also immensely gratifying for horror fans that had long yearned to see a haunted-house film that didn't lay it on too thick. There is something almost universally unsettling about the idea of your home being invaded by an unnatural force you cannot see nor comprehend, and the best ghost stories are the ones mundane enough to seem eerily plausible. Yet for years, cinematic ghost stories were never content to adopt a subtle approach to the haunted-house subgenre, instead offering up latex monsters, computer-generated effects and grisly murders to goose an audience that the filmmakers didn’t believe would s

Poltergeist Remake Is On The Way

Recently freed from a crushing $4 billion debt, MGM’s new studio management in February told Hollywood’s talent agencies it was moving ahead with plans to reboot five movie franchises, including Steven Spielberg’s 1982 horror hit, Poltergeist . The word is  that the studio has offered Pulitzer-prize winning playwright cum screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire ( Rabbit Hole ) the job of reimagining the paranormal classic. Lindsay-Abaire confirmed he’d been approached by MGM and offered the job, but emphasized that no deal had been reached and stressed that he was not yet even sure he wanted to take it. (Abaire’s latest play, Good People, starring Frances McDormand, just wrapped its limited engagement on Broadway a little over a week ago; both People and McDormand are nominated for Tony Awards.) It’s understandable of playwrights to be wary of big studios. But MGM’s new bosses — Spyglass Entertainment principals Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber — are co-financiers who know something abou

"Chronicles" Of John And Max Landis

"Chronicles" Of John And Max Landis Twentieth Century Fox is in negotiations to pick up " Chronicle ," a spec script from the son of director John Landis , Max Landis , while first-time director Josh Trank is attached to helm the super-power project. According to the studio, the story focuses on the lives of three Portland teens that become exposed to a mysterious substance in the woods, and, as a result, begin to develop incredible powers. They work together to hone their skills for fun, until personal and family problems begin to turn them against one another. " Chronicle" is being eyed to be told in hand-held, documentary-style that has been slowly gaining popularity with movies such as " Cloverfield " and " Paranormal Activity ."  While he directed a web series titled " Killpoint " in 2007 and was the editor on " Big Fan ," Robert Siegel's indie starring Patton Oswalt, Trank may have that style of f

Oren Peli's "Area 51" Headed To The Big Screen

Oren Peli's "Area 51" Headed To The Big Screen Paramount Pictures has landed U.S. distribution rights to "Area 51," the Oren Peli-directed follow-up to the sleeper hit "Paranormal Activity." Deal puts the studio back in business with the creative and financing team behind "Paranormal Activity," the $11,000 film that's grossed more than $106 million since Par began rolling it out in September. Peli had a much larger budget to work with on this extraterrestrial tale than he did for his ghost story, as sources said he brought the film in at a shade under $5 million. As many as four other bidders wanted the pic, but Par Film Group prexy Adam Goodman had an inside track. He was instrumental in acquiring "Paranormal Activity" while at DreamWorks and was the hands-on exec at Paramount, which effectively executed the rollout as the film built word of mouth and became a breakout hit. Goodman closed the deal with David Molner, chairman o

"Paranormal Activity" To Get A Sequel

"Paranormal Activity" To Get A Sequel Let's remember a little film called " The Blair Witch Project " and what a surprise film that it was and then Bam we get a sequel " Book of the Shadows: Blair Witch 2 " one of the worst movies I have ever seen. So Paramount be very careful how you go about making a sequel to such a great film and don't kill the effects the first movie had on all of us. With a horrible sequel it could kill the effects of the first film. During Viacom's earnings call Tuesday, CEO Philippe Dauman said the movie has been one of those surprise hits that comes along only rarely, grossing $85 million in the U.S. already. Given that a follow-up release wouldn't have the same element of surprise as "Paranormal," it will be key to craft a smart approach to a sequel, he said. "Our team will come up with the right creative and marketing approach to make sure that we benefit from a sequel," Dauman said.
