Soundtrack Review: xXx Return of Xander Cage

xXx: Return of Xander Cage - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack delivers a bold sound for a great action flick.

Review by Matt Cummings

If you missed the surprisingly entertaining xXx: Return of Xander Cage, you weren't alone. As of this post it's only made $37m from an $85m budget, which doesn't bode well for a four-quel. But it's a great ride, filled with incredible stunts and some memorable one-liners, even if it feels like Actor Vin Diesel is putting together another Fast & Furious family of xXx-ers. Composer Bryan Tyler and Robert Lydecker's score for the film is also another bright spot, filled with plenty of muscular tracks which makes the movie a Must-See instead of a Forget-Me-Not.

Although Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) has been out of the NSA for 12 years, his former boss Augustus Gibbons boss (Samuel L. Jackson) has been busy recruiting for the xXx program anyways. But that doesn't mean the bruising baldy doesn't still enjoy the rush of liberating cable television to the masses of the Dominican Republic. But any celebration is soon extinguished, when a new threat uses a cutting-edge technology to turn satellites into giant weapons by hurtling them onto major cities. one of them apparently kills Gibbons, forcing his associate Marke (Toni Collette) to bring Cage back in to find said tech. But he'll need a team that's strictly off the books, which includes a sharpshooter (Ruby Rose), a sexually-submissive techie (Nina Dobrev), and a thrill-seeking psychopath (Rory McCann), who all could be as dangerous as the baddies themselves. They include a high-flying killer (Donnie Yen) and a stylish assassin (Deepika Padukone), both of whom share a dark connection with Cage. As lines are drawn and the action ramps up, Cage must decide whether these bad guys and their associates (including Tony Jaa) represent a real risk, or if the true villain might be right under his nose.

Tyler, a journeyman composer for both television (Hawaii Five-O) and film (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Furious 7), quickly settles into a 'sound' for Cage, mixing cinematic electronic orchestrations with thick dub-step on songs like the opening track The Return of Xander Cage and Track 4's Windfall. Even a setup track like Carte Blanche moves with a sense of purpose, taking us right into Launched, which is actually more than its big Bond-like electronic orchestrations. Lydecker has a fairly deep collaboration history with Tyler, working with him on Ultron but also Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Iron Man 3, as well as several video games. That relationship pays off again, as the duo mix horns, violins, electronic guitar, chimes (yes, and it works as well), and sound effects while keeping the message simple: this is Xander's world we're delving into, which is bigger than it's ever been. Such an expansion of shooting locations and an intriguing worldwide cast requires a wider sound, and that's just what we get. There's nothing small or meager here, and I'm just fine with that.

xXx produces a variety of sounds from Tyler and Lydecker. They're not afraid to experiment, nor are they worried about what they'll find when they push those boundaries. That spirit pays off while keeping the message focused on our heroes. Listen to a track like #12's Evolution for proof: it starts off with a club-dub moment before moving back into that consummate Tyler orchestration which moves effortlessly between dark and elegant. Track 15's Battle of the X's does something similar, moving us through different beats and environments without losing us in the process. I also love #16's Not So Special Forces as Xander Cage is actually given a theme on which to ride his skateboard and bad-ass GTO which arrives near film's end. Make sure you also check out the awesome xXx Incorporated, which takes a mostly electronic ride.

Varèse Sarabande Records delivers an expertly-mixed experience that should play well in earbuds, your car, or in front of a high-end home system. These 21 tracks are ready for whatever you throw at it, as many of these have already found their way into my newest soundtrack playlist.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is an integral part of what makes this film so enjoyable. Just like Diesel's desire to produce a big over-the-top action film, Tyler and Lydecker deliver a thoroughly enjoyable ride for the ears. It's too bad audiences haven't dropped back into Cage's world so far, but don't let that keep you from picking up the score. It's an early entry into my Best-Of for 2017, and I'll be revisiting this one often as we gear up for a potentially great year of scores.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is already available digitally and will arrive on CD on February 17, 2017.

Movie Review: Rings

You'll be bored of the Rings.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

Samara Morgan, the demonic, well-dwelling little girl with a face constantly obscured by wet, black hair, never really got her fair shake as an American horror icon. Introduced in 2002’s The Ring—a remake of the Japanese horror hit Ringu and one of the rare American remakes to vastly surpass the quality of its progenitor—Samara seemed destined to ride that film’s huge success into the big leagues of franchised horror. She had a unique look and a terrific gimmick, and therefore met the basic standards for admission into the genre’s rogues’ gallery. Yet apart from a single sequel (2005’s wholly forgettable The Ring Two), Samara found herself left behind, stuck down in the dank well of forgotten would-be franchises.

The Johnny-come-lately third sequel Rings finally dusts Samara off and puts her back into play, but with the lingering sense that her moment has passed and cannot be reclaimed. After all, vengeful she-wraiths are a dime a dozen in contemporary horror (Blumhouse alone employs scads). The Ring brought J-horror to the masses at a time when the last vestiges of Scream had died out and left a vacuum in the genre that desperately needed filling. But the J-horror well also dried up, replaced by torture-porn, which was usurped by the remake boon, which gave way to the found-footage trend, which is now also on the wane. Horror trades on trends more than any other genre of film, and The Ring’s moment in the sun was several fads back. As with Scream 4, the onus is on Rings to find a way to cleverly reinvent itself for the new era it now occupies. And as with Scream 4, it fails to meet that challenge.

At some point years after the efforts of Naomi Watts’ Rachel Keller to rid the world of Samara, the precocious little ghost is still playing at her signature game. Her cursed videotape is still making the rounds, infecting all who watch it with the seven-day death march (replete with the courtesy call to inform the watcher of their impending doom). In the nifty opening sequence, one viewer experiences his one-week reckoning while on a crowded plane. The tape belonging to that doomed passenger winds up in the vintage-tech-loving hands of Gabriel (Johnny Galecki), a college professor with no clue of what he’s entering into when he hits the play button on his VCR. We are also introduced to blandly perfect couple Julia and Holt (Matilda Lutz and Alex Roe), sweethearts trying out the long-distance thing when Holt leaves for college. After a period of no contact from Holt, as well as an unsettling Skype call from one of Holt’s classmates (Aimee Teegarden), Julia decides to drive to the campus to see what’s going on. There she finds that Gabriel has been running a network built around the videotape, encouraging students to watch it while enlisting others to act as “tails,” watching copies of the tape to inherit the curse before passing it along and continuing the cycle.

After bearing witness to a Samara attack, Julia learns that Holt is next on the chopping block. Despite Holt’s urgings to the contrary, Julia watches the tape to absolve Holt of his damnation. However, she isn’t content to simply pass the curse along to the next poor sap and keep the chain going. She wants to stop it altogether, and she feels that the way to do that is to find out what happened to Samara during her brief, tormented life and bring the restless spirit a measure of peace. Emboldening Julia in her quest is the fact that her copy of the tape contains new footage never before seen in previous versions.

The rules that govern the world of The Ring are ripe with so much potential for fun tweaking, especially in the exponential ways that technology has evolved since 2002, back when VHS was still a thing. What’s frustrating about Rings is how it sidles up to some of these conceits before backing away sheepishly and embracing the tried and true. That plane sequence falsely gives the indication that Rings is going to tinker with convention by taking Samara’s guidelines to exciting new places. In the previous films, Samara claimed her victims in dark houses with few (if any) eyewitnesses. What happens if someone hits their seven-day mark in a large crowd of people? That’s a fascinating idea, but Rings neglects to explore it, cutting away from the plane sequence far too soon rather than seeing it through and then dealing with its ramifications. Further, what happens if someone were to load the video onto YouTube and it goes viral? What if someone aired it during the Super Bowl and then Samara had to claim a large chunk of the planet’s population at once? The whole concept is positively juicy with creative possibilities.

So what does Rings opt to do? Why, retrace the plot of the first film, of course. Julia sets off on a quest to a small town to dredge up details about Samara’s childhood, just as Rachel Keller did before. Julia also meets the same sorts of shady or haunted yokels who know more than they let on about the past. Along the way, Julia also has to deal with the visions and paranormal hinkiness that accompany the weeklong curse. The film unfolds so similarly to The Ring that it acts more in the capacity of a remake than a sequel. More bafflingly, it also borrows bits of data from The Ring Two while also contradicting some of that film’s revelations, which is perplexing since 1) most people couldn’t tell you one thing that happened in The Ring Two if you put a gun to their heads, and 2) even if they did remember anything from it, this movie rewrites that film’s chain of events. Rings can’t decide if it’s a film for Ring aficionados or Ring neophytes, making it a film essentially for neither.

In a brutally nondescript cast, only Galecki shows any personality, harkening back to his pre-Big Bang gig in I Know What You Did Last Summer. The only other casting choice of note is Vincent D’Onofrio as a character whose gist is immediately clear from the fact that he’s played by Vincent D’Onofrio (this also leads to a climax that’s like an inept microcosmic version of Don’t Breathe). The film also lacks the dread-saturated atmosphere that Gore Verbinski brought to the original film. What’s left is a whole lot of nothing in particular. It also leaves Samara in the same cultural limbo she’s resided in for 15 years, still not emerging as the memorable figure of terror that she was initially. The real kicker is that Sadako, the Samara counterpart in Ringu, has just been deployed in Sadako vs. Kayako, where she fights the villainess of Ju-On, the original Japanese version of The Grudge. That’s a fun concept, more novel than anything in Rings. Maybe Samara needs to step into the ring with Annabelle to keep afloat, culturally.

#MILLAJOVOVICH STARS IN 'THE NIGHT THAT FLOWS' - THE WORLD'S FIRST DRIVE THROUGH IMMERSIVE THEATER EXPERIENCE

Last night, actress and model Milla Jovovich starred alongside a cast of talented faces from across Europe, in the world’s first drive through immersive theater experience.

The seven-scene interactive production - entitled ‘The Night That Flows’ - was staged within the immense space of The Printworks in London. The experience saw 100 guests immersed in the story of one amazing fictional night as it unfolded across five European cities, including Berlin, Milan, Paris, Barcelona and London.

The story, narrated throughout by Milla Jovovich, centered around guests finding their perfect flow and took inspiration from the ‘flowing’ design of the new Toyota C-HR - created to look like it is always moving, even when at a standstill.

Participants were thrust into the limelight as part of the event, taking centre-stage in the live multi-sensory performance and interacting with a variety of different characters as they made their way through the myriad of scenes.

Each scene brought with it unexpected twists and exciting scenarios, all inspired by key features of the car - from the dynamic drive and stylish diamond design, to the sophisticated interior and JBL concert hall sound system.

The journey began in Berlin, where guests were transported through the streets of the city in the C-HR using innovative projection footage captured at the Berlin International Festival of Light.
From Berlin, guests flowed seamlessly into Milan where they experienced their very own taste of a high fashion catwalk, complete with paparazzi. Following their catwalk moment, guests were led by Fabio Attanasio, Italian fashion designer and founder of ‘The Bespoke Dudes’, and Italian model Giorgia Palmas, into the backstage preparations of an Italian fashion show. Completely enclosed in a mirrored space, the C-HR became the star of the unique fashion show, revolving a full 360 degrees so that every angle of the car’s dynamic design and elegantly integrated detail was exposed.

Propelled into a Parisian casino, guests joined an excitable crowd gathered around a roulette table, as French croupier Etienne Pradier invited them to take part in a game of chance. No sooner had they placed their bets on the roulette table, they were greeted by French rally driver Guerlain Chicherit, who led them in an exhilarating drive around a giant projected roulette table, showcasing the car’s driving dynamics, fluid motion and controlled responses.

Travelling through to the next city, Barcelona, guests were surrounded by a flash-mob style club scene, with Spanish DJ Cuartero leading the crowd as the soundtrack played out over the C-HR’s JBL sound system.

The journey concluded with guests arriving in a London bar, where they were greeted by the innovative mixologist duo, Alex Kratena and Simone Caporale and joined by Milla herself.
The event was created by a team comprised of some of the world’s finest theatrical and technical design talent, all brought together under The Department's Creative Directors Jonny Grant and Hamish Jenkinson, with Jessica Rees Middleton as Executive Producer.

Speaking about the event, Milla Jovovich said: “I was thrilled to be asked to be a part of this event - I love that immersive theatre takes everyone on a completely unique journey and that no one experience is the same. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, so when Toyota approached me with the idea, I was intrigued and knew I had to be a part of it. The C-HR is a completely new concept for Toyota - rooted in style and quality. It’s a beautiful looking car and incredibly stylish inside. The brand is always looking for ‘a better way’ to design or do things – and I’m a huge fan of that philosophy. Bringing everything to life was a creative challenge, but we found our flow eventually…and we hope everyone who came to the event left feeling inspired to find their perfect flow too”
Jan Verhaegen, Manager Brand and Marketing Communications at Toyota Europe said: “The C-HR is a completely new concept for the Toyota brand and totally different to anything we’ve ever created before. As such, we knew we had to launch it in a way that was innovative, unique and would bring to life the sense of ‘flow’ that the car embodies. ‘The Night That Flows’ captured not only the dynamic and innovative character of the C-HR, but also showcased exactly why it is the ultimate car for people who want to flow through life.”

Movie Review: #TheSpaceBetweenUs

A teenager born on Mars seeks love on Earth in this oddly-fashioned YA misfit.

Review by Matt Cummings
The road to the Sci-Fi/YA movie The Space Between Us has been marked by almost as many delays as Elon Musk's SpaceX. First, the film was set for an October release, then a December one, and there was even talk of it crash-landing somewhere in dreaded January, a month where the unwanted, unworthy, and unlucky find solace. It's finally set to premiere this Friday, providing a gorgeous landscape to tell a story filled with planet-sized plot holes but bolstered by mostly good performances.
Sixteen-year-old Gardner (Asa Butterfield) harbors several deep secrets: he's the first person born on Mars and thus cannot come back to Earth, and the general public doesn't know that he even exists. Confined to a science base on the Red Planet, Gardner is curious and smart but wants desperately to see his mother's home, while space boss Nathaniel (Gary Oldman) ponders whether Gardner deserves a chance to try. After lengthy discussions, Gardner comes home, only to learn that everyone thinks his mother died in a space accident. Upon his escape, he heads straight for his deep-space pen pal Tulsa (Britt Robertson), who's been lead to believe that Gardner's illnesses are Earth-based. As the two journey to find his father, the couple will learn about life's tough lessons, while fellow astronaut Kendra (Carla Gugino) races to find Gardner before his Mars-borne illnesses begin to manifest.

The decision to move Space is supposedly a financial one: STX Entertainment, realizing that Disney's Rogue One might do very well in December, also looked at the crowded Oscar market and wanted out. This was a good decision, provided that was the real reason for its self-imposed juggling act. However, there's usually more to these stories than slick press releases, and the truth about Space rears its ugly head within minutes of the opening. Director Peter Chelsom and Writer Allan Loeb aren't really so concerned about the science behind their movie, and so that decision quickly overtakes our hope in various ways, including Martian gravity, pre-marital sex between boss/employee, and even whether a new car can actually be stolen using a quick motion on a cell phone. Chelsom and DP Barry Peterson shoot a very nice canvas, boasting bright colors, amazing detail on the East Texas Mars lab, and stellar space trips from a pretty planet Earth. But the team's lack of commitment to the story - which leaves some pretty big plot holes - is eminently frustrating.

Don't blame the good cast for these issues. Butterfield, who got close to nabbing Spider-man, is great here as the dorky, fish-out-of-water type. He inhabits the role of Gardner with genuine goodness, confusion, and doubt, fresh out of his teens and ready to bring Science Nerdy back. His chemistry with Robertson is cute and light, something that should appeal to teens so long as you don't realize that she's actually 7 years older than Butterfield. Gugino is far better than to play roles like these, but here she's good as the moral center without being too 'mom.' I did like how Chelsom gives Kendra a moment to explain why she never wanted to be a mother, while Gardner looks on with somewhat bewildering eyes. She and Oldman should be in darker pictures together, as each exhibits moments when Gardner's escapes force them to take a moment to look inward. Both are old pros at such investigations, and it gives Space a much-needed boost in its credibility.

But that's where I draw the line in supporting this film. Space is full of planet-sized problems - some of which I've already mentioned - but most notably in one of two reveals at film's end that feels like a surprise tacked on for surprise sake. It's truly jarring, never fully explained, and upsets what could have been a great, darker ending. I'm not encouraging you to see this just so you can judge the reveal, but it's an example of what happens when creative teams fail to consider that audiences are smarter than they think. What's worse is the thought that Chelsom and Loeb actually think audiences won't care about such details because they'll just love the story of alien love. Illogical. Space gets caught in its own wormhole of half-truths, convenient plot devices (cell phones that can apparently jack everything, surprisingly clear Skype service to Mars, and a total inability to make its characters actually look older after 16 years).

For all the things it could have been - a darker teen drama about death, a better character drama about choices and obsession, or a stinging lesson on the dangers of letting private interests run a space company - The Space Between Us is so much less. Teens might not care because of the pretty faces, and with a dearth of releases this week, it could eek out a better presence than it could have in December. But there seems to be a lot of reasons why it was pushed back to 2017; seeing the film now tells me that just like our current political situation, you can't believe 'alternate facts' like press releases, when the real problems with something are apparent simply by looking at them.

The Space Between Us is rated PG-13 for brief sensuality and language and has a runtime of 120 minutes.

Marvel's The Runaways Have Been Cast

Let's face it, when it comes to Marvel, Hulu, like everyone else, has Netflix envy, and they're attempting to prove their prowess by mounting an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona's Runaways. Allusions aside, and more to the point, the pilot has found its cast.

The Runaways is forcused on six teenagers who learn that each of their parents are a part of The Pride, a supervillain cabal. This discovery sends them on the run and results in their forming a family unit of their own at the same time they're discovering themselves as people.

Rhenzy Feliz (Alex Wilder)

Feliz has appeared on Teen Wolf and in ten episodes of the Hulu series Casual. The character is described as a proud nerd and a fan of video games, who at his core wants nothing more than to meet up with the group of friends he grew up with.

Lyrica Okano (Nico Minoru)

Prior to this pilot, Okano has appeared on the TV series The Michael J. Fox Show, Unforgettable and The Affair. Nico, who puts out the vibe that she'd prefer to be alone, tries to do so by crafting a goth appearance for herself. In reality she might not be as independent as she seems.

Virginia Gardner (Karolina Dean)

Gardner has made a number of TV guest appearances, including a recurring role on The Goldbergs, and the films Goat and Little Bitches. Her character of Karolina Dean puts on the perfect, carefully-crafted front, but beneath the surface she's on a personal journey of discovery.

Ariela Barer (Gert Yokes)

Barer counts recurring roles on Keenan's Crush, New Girl and Netflix's reboot of One Day At A Time on her resume. Gert Yokes is considered a "riot grrl," personified by her purple hair and penchant for giving soapbox speeches. All of it is designed to hide her real feelings.

Gregg Sulkin (Oscar Stein)

Sulkin is probably best known for his recurring roles on Wizards Of Waverly Place and Pretty Little Liars,as well as being featured on Faking It. Plus there have been film roles, including Don't Hang Up and Anti-Social. Oscar Stein is the proverbial high school heartthrob. He's looked upon as little more than a dumb jock, but there's much more to him than people suspect.

Allegra Acosta (Molly Hernandez)

Acosta has appeared on the TV series Just Add Magic and recurred on 100 Things To Do Before High School. Molly Hernandez, youngest member of the Runaways ensemble, remains positive no matter what, while at the same time desperately wants to fit in.

New #LostCityOfZ Trailer

Based on author David Grann’s nonfiction bestseller, THE LOST CITY OF Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as “savages,” the determined Fawcett – supported by his devoted wife (Sienna Miller), son (Tom Holland) and aide-de-camp (Robert Pattinson) – returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925. SHARKNADO 5 Is Happening

Syfy and The Asylum announced today that Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will again star in SHARKNADO 5 (working title), reprising their roles as shark-fighting heroes Fin Shepard and April Wexler. Principal photography commenced today, February 2, in Bulgaria. The latest film in the hit global franchise, SHARKNADO 5 features the return of original cast member Cassie Scerbo as Nova, a bartender turned badass Sharknado fighter.

SHARKNADO 5, which sees the deadly weather phenomenon of shark-infested storms bombard cities around the world, will film in more than 5 countries, including the UK and Australia. Anthony C. Ferrante, who directed the first four films, is back to helm this latest installment, based on a script by Scotty Mullen.

Link to SHARKNADO 5 Script Pull:
https://spaces.hightail.com/receive/xgEMf

The original 2013 SHARKNADO film, which introduced a cyclone depositing man-eating sharks on the citizens of Los Angeles, became a worldwide phenomenon and spawned a pop culture franchise. In SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE, New York City was the target of the disaster, and in SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO!, a mega-sharknado made its way down the "Feast Coast" from Washington, D.C. to Florida. In the most recent installment, SHARKNADO: THE 4TH AWAKENS, the shark-infested storms went national. The film ended with the Eiffel Tower ripping away from Paris and crashing down on Niagara Falls - a chilling indication that no one in the world is safe!

Now, in SHARKNADO 5, with much of North America lying in ruins, the rest of the world braces for the inevitable - a global sharknado. Fin Shepard and his family must put a stop to this disaster before Earth is completely obliterated.

Han Solo Film Has Begun Production

After a lot of build-up, the usual casting trickle feed of news and plenty of jokes from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the Han Solo Star Wars Story film is now shooting in Pinewood. To celebrate, Miller posted an image of the first slate.

The usual blast shields are down on most of the information on this one, but we do know that Alden Ehrenreich is playing the younger Solo, with Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as Han's mentor figure and Emilia Clarke in a role that no one is talking about yet.

The script coms from Lawrence Kasdan and son Jon and we're expecting big things from the directing duo, who have a habit of taking unlikely ideas and making winning movies. No pressure, guys. And as for that working title? Red Cup is a jokesome reference to the Solo brand cups usually spotted at parties.

Are You Interested In Watching A #JohnWick TV Series?

They stole his car, they killed his dog and they haven't even released his sequel yet but John Wick is being dragged out of retirement once more for a prequel TV series. Director Chad Stahelski, while talking through the origins of John Wick: Chapter 2, opened up to SlashFilm about the proposed small screen spinoff.

"We’re not doing a prequel [with Chapter 2]," he explains. "We wanted to, it just didn’t fit quite where we’re at…. we’d save that for other aspects of the property. Lionsgate is very interested in doing a John Wick TV show, and that seems very appealing to us, to give those creative ideas to that entity, because I think in TV you could really expand on what that is, and greater than we could in just a two-hour film."

The prospect of watching Wick tear up the Russian underworld as their 'Baba Yaga' and seeing just exactly how he killed that guy with a pencil is quite the prospect. However, with the films' signature gun-fu and precision ultra-violence hardly compatible with network sensibilities, we can only hope such a show finds the home it deserves, where executives aren't scared by a little flying claret. Netflix, are you paying attention?
