Troll Hunter Remake On The Way

Chris Columbus’ 1492 Pictures has partnered with CJ Entertainment & Media to acquire remake rights to the 2010 Andre Ovredal-directed Norwegian film Troll Hunter. Marc Haimes is set to write the script. Deal comes just as Magnolia opens the original Troll Hunter in the US and on VOD.

The documentary-style film is about a group of students whose investigation into a series of mysterious bear killings leads to something sinister. They wind up following and documenting a mystery man who turns out to be a troll hunter. Columbus will produce with 1492 partners Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe, and CJ Entertainment. Filmkameratene AS’s John M. Jacobsen (who produced the original) will also be a producer along with his partner Sveinung Golimo.

"Troll Hunter was a visceral, thrilling, cinematic rock and roller coaster ride of a movie. Visually, there are scenes in this film that American audiences have never seen. We want to introduce an international audience to this amazing moviegoing experience," said Columbus.

Columbus’ 1492 set up the film through its three-year development deal with CJ Entertainment & Media. They just acquired screen rights to Michael Koryta's The Cypress House (Columbus will write that script) as well as a remake of the Korean pic Hello Ghost and Temple Stay with director JK Youn.

Jeremy Renner To Star In "Slingshot"

Because he clearly doesn’t already have enough on his plate, Jeremy Renner seems intent on keeping the work flowing by setting up Slingshot, a rally racing sports drama at Paramount that he’ll star in and produce.

Slingshot will be based on the true story of Bill Caswell, who ditched a lucrative job as a finance banker, bought a $500 BMW car from Craigslist, souped it up for rally competition and went up against professional teams in the World Rally Championships in Mexico in 1991. Given the enormous challenges ahead of him, he won great acclaim by placing third in the final race.

Don Handfield, Renner’s partner in his new production company, has written the script, which doesn’t yet have a director attached. It’s the second project announced by the pair, who already have a Renner-headed Steve McQueen biopic in development with James Gray writing the screenplay.

You’ve got to give the man some credit for striking while the iron of his career is white hot. Renner’s got Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol headed for release this year, has just shot Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, is moving on to The Avengers and is lined up to star in The Bourne Legacy, among other things. This marks another move to control his destiny a little after all those blockbusters.

Elodie Yung In Talks To Play Jinx In G.I. Joe Sequel

French actress Elodie Yung is in talks to join Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum in Paramount's new G.I. Joe movie.

Yung will play a ninja member of the Joe squad named Jinx.

Jon Chu is directing the movie while Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the action movie, which is rebuilding mode. A host of characters not seen in the first movie are being introduced, with martial arists Jinx being one.

Johnson is in negotiations to play Roadblock while Tatum returns as Duke. Yung has already displayed considerable ninja-like prowess in District 13: Ultimatum, the parkour action movie whose highlight included a sequence in which she took on corrupt cops with a knife in her ponytail.

Yung, repped by Gersh and Caliber Media and UK-based Hamilton Hodell, will be seen playing the lesbian girlfriend of Rooney Mara in David Fincher¹s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Al Pacino Joins The Humbling

Before Al Pacino and director Barry Levinson re-team for Gotti: Three Generations, the duo will first reunite on an adaptation of the Philip Roth novel The Humbling, which has been set for a fall start and will be financed by Avi Lerner's Millennium Films/Nu Image. It is just the latest in a period of extreme productivity for Levinson, some of it directly attributable to the acclaim he got for directing Pacino's Emmy-winning turn as Jack Kevorkian in HBO's You Don't Know Jack.

The Humbling revolves around Simon Axler (Pacino), a famous stage actor in decline who is revived when he retires to his upstate New York farmhouse and takes up with a much younger woman. It has a script by Buck Henry, Michal Zebede and Levinson. Levinson will be looking to quickly cast the young female lead, the actor's agent, and several other eccentric characters you would expect in a Roth novel. Levinson committed to this movie after completing production on the low-budget eco-horror film The Bay, which he shot on hand-held cameras and which Lionsgate will release. He just spent time at the Cannes Film Festival to help stir interest in the offshore rights of the Gotti movie; and he's right now in China, heading the jury at the Shanghai Film Festival.

Uncut Viral Video From 'Super 8

The secret's almost out. Super 8 will open in theaters everywhere tonight and we'll finally see if it lives up to the hype. But before we can do that, Paramount has released a new viral video that gives us our first look at the supposed "villain" of the story.

To read my review of the film, hop on over HERE save the spoilers for later if you can.

I'm sure you are well aware that Twitter and Paramount teamed up for SUPER 8 sneak previews, as the film is now being released tomorrow,

So if you live in Northern California it will be playing  at the Metreon in San Francisco, and the Century Greenback in Sacramento

The video shows a group of scientists (starting in the late 1950s) who are working on a top-secret military experiment. The footage reveals some info that's relevant to the plot, so if you don't want to be slightly spoiled, this would be the time to turn away.

Spoilers Ahead

Watch the clip after the Jump...

As you might suspect, the government gets their hands on what looks like a spacecraft and they start to conduct experiments on it and the creature inside. They find out that it can meld special cubes that consist of a material they've never seen before.

Here's the biggie. A poor scientist played by veteran actor Glynn Turman goes to feed the alien through the bars of its cage ... and it grabs him! Or eats him! Either way, he looks like a goner. You can see the creature's tentacle-like limbs slip between the bars to go in for the kill.

Unlike Cloverfield, it doesn't seem as if they're trying to keep this alien's physical identity a huge secret. If they were, why in the world would they release this, especially now?

On another note, are we the only ones getting a Lost, Dharma Initiative vibe from this video?

Lost's Damon Lindelof Getting Paid!

In its latest attempt to hatch a large-scale film that can play to a family audience, Disney has made a seven-figure deal with screenwriter and Lost exec producer Damon Lindelof to write and produce an original large-scale science fiction feature film. Other than the fact that the project has a working title of 1952, I couldn't pry plot details out of anybody. I'm not sure if the title connotes a period the film is set in, or if it is a Lost reference. I've also heard that this project isn't just being conceived for movies only, but that it has multiple platform aspirations.

The project came out of a series of meetings that Lindelof had with Disney's production president Sean Bailey and senior exec Brigham Taylor, and it's the first film that Lindelof is producing from the ground up. Since ending the run of Lost and serving as one of the show's architects all the way through, Lindelof has been on fire as a screenwriter. He teamed with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to script the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys & Aliens. Lindelof came aboard to rewrite Ridley Scott's 3D Alien prequel and injected enough new ideas into the Prometheus script for Fox and Scott to deem the film an original. Lindelof is right now working with Kurtzman and Orci to pull together a Star Trek sequel that can be ready to begin production later this year or early next.

I've reported my skepticism that Abrams would ever be able to move from launching Super 8 and jump into a Star Trek sequel that will make its summer 2012 release date, because the scribes need Abrams to give a thumbs up to the 70-page story outline they've written, and turn that into a script. Orci noted this in a Twitter message sent as he was heading to watch Super 8: @TrekMovie since JJ has seen super 8, maybe I can get him to read trek during the movie;). Lindelof will be engaged in that for a while, and he will start the Disney project after that.

X-Men First Class Spoilers & Mistakes From The Film

Gotta start with if you haven't seen the film you might want to come back and read the post after you have seen it. There are major Spoilers in this post. 12 of them to be exact.

Another thing is that my 9 year daughter pointed out some of these facts, She's a Nerd like her father. It amazes me that people have this much time on their hands to dissect a film from beginning to end. Every movie is going to have some sort of flaw.

You have been Warned. Spoilers!

1. Hank McCoy transforms into his beast form in X-Men First Class. However, in X-Men 2 when Mystique meets the guard in the bar, Hank McCoy, without fur, is speaking on a live talk show on a TV in the background.

2. In this movie, Emma Frost is seen as an adult woman (roughly around the same age as Professor X and Magneto). But the character is also in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, set years later when Professor X and Magneto are much older, but she is much younger.

3. When Xavier freezes Levene in the hallway he has a jet of water against his lips. In the next shot the jet of water is against his nose even though he didn't move.

4. A Westland Bell 47G helicopter with the a registration of G-CHOP is seen to land at the Russian army camp/military headquarters when Charles, Magneto and the X-Men are approaching. The registration denotes it is a British aircraft, so unlikely to be in the middle of Russia, and this particular model was built in 1966 - four years after the Cuban missile crisis.

5. Erik arrives in Argentina at a place called Villa Gesell, shown to be a town in middle of mountains. Villa Gesell is a beach town on the Atlantic Ocean coast, with no mountains.

6. In the scene where Erik confronts Shaw on the boat, Emma's hairstyle changes from being down to being in a half updo right after Shaw chastises her for harming their own kind.

7. In the scene where they first pull up to the mutant research facility, they are in a 1972/3 Cadillac when the movie is set in 1962.

8. Near the end, on the island, Mystique changes into Shaw to command his peons not to attack her friends. She is wearing the correct outfit, despite having never seen Shaw dressed like this before.

9. In a scene where Xavier is pointing a gun at Magneto the distance between the gun and Magneto's head changes between shots.

10. In First Class, Professor X is made handicapped in 1962 at the end of the movie. In the previous X-men movie, he was walking when he visited the girl (Jean) in the mid 70s with Magneto.

11. When sitting in Xaviers mansion there are cushions on the sofas made from a Sanderson fabric, Dandelion Clocks, this fabric was designed in 2009 but the film is set in 1960.

12. When Mystique is on the exercise table and Hank lifts the bar off her, her right leg changes from stretched out to bent from the different camera shots.

13. Alex Summers, AKA Havok, is the younger brother of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and is a teenager in the film. Yet in the 90s, when the first X-men was set, Scott was still a teenager when the Cuban missile crisis occurred in 1962, so 30 years between events.

Lone Ranger Film Has A Release Date

Disney will release Lone Ranger on December 21, 2012, giving the studio a big holiday entry in a crowding field. The film, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Armie Hammer as the title character and Johnny Depp as Tonto, takes place in 1869. A Texas Ranger, left for dead, is saved by the Comanche Tonto, who gives his new partner the masked identity of Lone Ranger. Justin Haythe, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio wrote the script and Jerry Bruckheimer is producing. The film begins production later this year.

The holiday corridor of 2012 is getting more competitive. Warner Bros recently set a December 14, 2012 release date for the Peter Jackson-directed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and on December 21, the Ang Lee-directed Life of Pi opens against Universal's untitled Judd Apatow film as well as Relativity Media's Hunter-Killer. Of course, date shifting is allowed.

Coming off the success of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, this is the second major film dated by Disney in the past two weeks. The Sam Raimi-directed Oz: The Great and Powerful was set for March 8, 2013 release.

Jake Gyllenhaal, who just starred in the Summit techno-thriller The Source Code, is being courted for another lead role.

Wolfman Reboot On The Way. Really Do We Need Another Film?

Moviehole is reporting that Universal were considering doing a sequel to the recent – god awful – ”The Wolfman”, which featured Benicio del Toro as the sharp-clawed Talbot – that’s no longer the case. Michael Tabb’s script is being rewritten and reworked to be an original film – almost a reboot of the classic Universal monster movie series.

If anything, this new film – they’ve yet to decide on a title though I hear “Werewolf” is popular -will share a link to the original George Waggner film (from 1941) rather than Joe Johnston’s ill-fated 2009 remake.

As I said, the Universal project is currently undergoing a rewrite; it is likely headed before the cameras in the Fall. The studio is said to be talking to prospective directors over the next couple of weeks. Casting will begin shortly thereafter.

The original 1941 film, starring Lon Chaney in the title role, told of a a practical man who returns to his homeland, is attacked by a creature of folklore, and infected with a horrific disease his disciplined mind tells him can not possibly exist. It’s a beloved piece of cinematic history – - unlike the remake which was cursed from the get-go; among it’s many hiccups, losing director Mark Romanek early into the production.

UFC Looking For A New Home In G4 Network

Mixed martial arts producer Ultimate Fighting Championship has held talks to buy a controlling stake in NBCUniversal's G4 cable network, sources confirmed a report by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

A source familiar with the situation said UFC has also talked to other networks ahead of the expiration of its current content deal with Viacom's Spike network. UFC also offers regular pay per view events. Talks are at an early stage, the person said.

UFC and G4 officials declined comment.

A deal for G4, which targets young men, would give UFC its own distribution outlet for its bouts. Comcast took control of NBCUniversal in late January.

Poltergeist Remake Is On The Way

Recently freed from a crushing $4 billion debt, MGM’s new studio management in February told Hollywood’s talent agencies it was moving ahead with plans to reboot five movie franchises, including Steven Spielberg’s 1982 horror hit, Poltergeist. The word is  that the studio has offered Pulitzer-prize winning playwright cum screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) the job of reimagining the paranormal classic.

Lindsay-Abaire confirmed he’d been approached by MGM and offered the job, but emphasized that no deal had been reached and stressed that he was not yet even sure he wanted to take it. (Abaire’s latest play, Good People, starring Frances McDormand, just wrapped its limited engagement on Broadway a little over a week ago; both People and McDormand are nominated for Tony Awards.)

It’s understandable of playwrights to be wary of big studios. But MGM’s new bosses — Spyglass Entertainment principals Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber — are co-financiers who know something about rebooting a beloved classic: They co-financed Paramount’s big bet on JJ Abrams Star Trek reboot. As such, they also seem to be resisting Hollywood’s usual modus operandi of hiring a cheap commercial director, some CW stars, and adding another roman numeral: Insiders tell us MGM has no creative parameters for a Poltergeist remake — it would be Lindsay-Abaire’s to shape in whatever fashion he chooses, should he want the job.

It’s also clear why MGM is interested in the landmark Poltergeist franchise; horror need not be expensive to be successful, as long as it's smart. Oren Peli’s 2009 hit Paranormal Activity was made for $15,000 and grossed $193 million worldwide, and last year's Insidious (directed by Saw's James Wan) was made for $1.5 million, and grossed $70 million worldwide. The original Poltergeist was relatively cheap, too; it cost a little more than $10 million back in 1982 — less than $25 million in today’s dollars — but grossed eleven times that worldwide.

home, where things are not what they appear to be between his mother and stepfather. Then,

won’t graduate. George soon sees how quickly the world comes apart when you have perfected

Teaser Poster Thomas The Tank Engine

Who saw this coming? And it isn't a joke. HIT Entertainment, rights holder to the Thomas the Tank Engine kiddie juggernaut, is moving forward with its first live action theatrical film. Shane Acker, who directed the 2009 animated film 9, will direct a film set in Sodor, the island of talking trains., where Thomas is among a litany of characters . Weta Workshop and Mattel's entertainment properties design team have joined the creative team, and the financing and distribution is being sold by Cinetic Media and the UTA Independent Film Group. the script was written by Chris Viscardi & Will McRobb. and Shrek the Third's Josh Klausner.

Created 65 years ago, Thomas the Tank Engine has been the number one preschool toy license in the UK for 11 years. It has held the top spot in the US for a decade. Since the core audience of Thomas is preschool age, the choice of Acker as director is surprising. After all, he's best known for turning his student short film 9 into a Tim Burton/Timur Bekmambetov-produced animated feature about a rag doll that awakens in a post apocalyptic world and battles a soul-stealing monster. Acker acknowledges that he wants to broaden the movie's audience beyond pre-schoolers, but has no interest in causing nightmares.

"I'm a recent father, with a 20-month old daughter," "We lead such busy lives in Hollywood, always running and hustling, but children tend to slow you down a bit and reconnect you with that inner world. It reinvents your imagination, seeing things through a child's eyes It was transformative for me and that is what inspired me about the possibilities here. The tale will revolve around a pre-teen boy who has drifted apart from his father. The son is introduced into this world of Sodor, a place his father visited as a child but can't remember. There is a bonding experience."

The decision to develop the film outside studios was made by HIT Entertainment CEO Jeff Dunn, and the movie is being supervised by HIT Movies president and Nickelodeon vet Julia Pistor. "Doing it this way gave us more control over the development, keep the essence of the story right and package the film in a way that makes sense for the brand," she said. "The movie will launch a line of older-skewing movies and toys that will be in the vehicle aisle of the toy stores and not the pre-school aisle."

Super 8 Movie Review By: SandwichJohn

Super 8 Movie Review
By: SandwichJohn

I gotta say that the movie did take me back to being a kid and watching E.T or Goonies for the first time. A group of kids on an adventure to find out the true about something. Super 8 has amazing visual effects, camera work, and the sound was just mind blowing. And I think that Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney will be getting a ton of movie offers after this film. This is going to be their break out film.

With all the mystery surrounding the film , did it help or hurt the film? The box office will answer that next week. But I thought they did a great job teasing what was in the Air Force container. And I will not spoil that for you.

From Writer- Director J.J. Abrams comes a film that will take you back to your childhood, with
all the happiness of hanging out with friends, your fears, and sadness. Executive Producer Steven Spielberg definitively had an impact on the story telling and directing of this film. You can feel his touch on the film when you watch it.

It is the summer of 1979 and Joel Courtney as Joe Lamb, Elle Fanning as Alice Dainard, Ryan Lee as Carey, Zach Mills as Preston, Riley Griffiths as Charles Kazny and Gabriel Basso as Martin are set to make their own zombie movie. They get their dream lead actress (Alice) and believe they are on their way to making an instant classic. While filming their movie's climactic scene, a spectacular train crash sends them into peril. Dodging debris and running for their lives, it becomes immediately apparent that something is not right with this train.

The crash scene had to be one of the most spectacular choreographed scene in a long time. It just never stopped. Trust me you will be holding onto your seat during this ride. This is where the film starts to take off.

The title of the film comes from the camera the kids are using to film their Zombie movie. Does the Super 8 film hold the key to the mystery why people and animals are missing?

I think the less you know about Super 8 the better. Watching the film with not knowing much about it will make the experience better.

The second half of the film does slow down and it feels like the film starts to drag a bit. But overall a great summer film that I really hope finds an audience out there. They don't make movies in this fashion any more.

Also stay until the end of the credits. I should do another review for the scenes you get to see then.

Rumor:Paul Walker To Play Kyle Reese In Terminator 5

Please remember this is strictly a RUMOR, nothing has been confirmed. whatsplaying is reporting that Paul Walker’s name keeps coming up - could he possibly be Lin’s pick for Kyle Reese?

Despite Mr Schwarzenegger’s recent scandlous issues, Megan Ellison - who recently inherited Skynet from the bankless Halcyon - is pushing on with her plan to make a new Terminator movie. As we reported exclusively in January, Justin Lin (Fast Five) has been shopping around a new Terminator movie, one that Arnold Schwarzenegger has agreed to be a part of, with Universal showing the most interest at the time (No studio is currently onboard).

From the sounds of things, the big guy does have a fairly substantial role in the new story - which is said to involve that original timeline being torn, again - but this Terminator would mostly be anchored by a new, younger male lead (Paul Walker’s name keeps coming up - could he possibly be Lin’s pick for Kyle Reese?). Oh, and I think that’s where the rumors of the ‘original cast returning’ come into play - though it’s not so much the original cast as it is ‘the original characters’ from the original movie. Geddit? Like J.J’s Star Trek. What may happen, I’m told, is the creative crew might lessen Schwarzenegger’s screentime in this movie, so it’s less work and less of a commitment for him and thus, it’ll be easier to talk the big guy into doing something this year - - as opposed to whatever year he feels he’s ready to return to acting.

When news of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s infidelity (and the son he shared with a worker) got out, the former Governor decided it best to put everything filmwise on hold for the moment - atleast until his approval points rise again. One of the projects that was said to be on hold - via a press release issued by the Governator’s office - is this Terminator movie.
That’s true… but not entirely.

While Schwarzenegger may not be yet ready to return to film, considering recent events, and has temporarily put his Terminator reprise on hold, Ellison and are still keen to get going on the movie.

Worst case scenario : They might just do as Lionsgate have on their The Last Stand and bring in Sylvester Stallone to replace him (But please no!). I feel guilty for even suggesting that.

Big Man Japan Film Getting Remade

Columbia Pictures has optioned remake and sequel rights to Big Man Japan, which will be developed and produced into a new feature film by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner, it was announced today by Hannah Minghella, president of production for Columbia Pictures. Big Man Japan was a breakthrough hit in Japan in 2007 and a cult hit in the United States in 2009. Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi will write the new adaptation.

Set in a world where monsters wreak havoc, there’s one man who can protect the citizenry: Big Man Japan, who runs the Department of Monster Prevention. Using electricity, he can grow to be 10 stories tall and fight off the most menacing of monsters. The problem is that he’s not very good at his job and often causes as much damage as he prevents. The people believe he’s a joke – and not nearly as good at the job as his father and grandfather were before he took over the family business.

The option for all non Japanese language rights to the film were secured through Yoshimoto Kogyo Co, Ltd, and their affiliate Yoshimoto Creative Agency, Ltd, producers of the original film that was directed by Hitoshi Matsumoto.

Toby Jaffe will oversee development for Original.
