Movie Review: #KuboandtheTwoStrings

A boy, a monkey, and a beetle go on an adventure to save his life and no, this is not a joke.

By Erika Ashley

Kameyo, a mother, runs away from her evil, powerful, and magical family to save the life of her young son, Kubo, after Kameyo’s father, Moon King, took the child's eye and killed her husband. In the process of fleeing Kubo’s mother sustains a head injury that causes her to lose her memory and slip into states of unconsciousness. To which Kubo spends his days tending to her needs and going into the small town down the hill to play the samisen while storytelling and using his magical gifts to do origami. During one of her rare conscious moments his mother warns him how dangerous it is for him to be out of their cave home after sundown because his grandfather will find him and take his other eye.

Kubo promises to stay indoors during night like usual but the following sunset he loses track of time while trying to pray to his father. Soon after the sun sets, his magical witch aunts find him in the forest and try to take him. His mother sensing danger uses the last bit of her magic to save Kubo yet again. Kubo must use a magical lucky charm turned living guide, a samurai turned beetle, and his own magical gifts to defeat his evil family and stay alive.

First, I genuinely love stop-motion/claymation films simply based off the details and intricacies put into creating the flawless animation. Laika has done a phenomenal job in creating highly immersive and realistic worlds and fully developed characters in past films. Kubo is another stunning piece of artwork with a surprisingly different style. Laika previously created more traditional cartoonish characters and worlds while Kubo is a completely different and new look that fits with the Japanese theme. A lot of the animation and “magic” revolves around origami which is interesting, refreshing, and fun to watch.

The story hooks you from the very beginning of Kubo's mother’s dramatic escape that leads into his daily life struggle. The element of magic and folklore fits well into the film's style but also adds to the story's progression. However, I wish the Director - Travis Knight and writers would have given more backstory towards the beginning film because for this film being meant for a younger audience it would have been easier for them to follow. Instead the entire film gets summarized just after the beginning of the third act when the ending seemed a little rushed. Also, it got a little muddy towards the second act when the audience begins to understand that Kubo does actually have special magic abilities and is just learning how to use them, but then the introduction of how he has to defeat his family is convoluted and haphazardly explained.

Even though this film is meant for kids, I would suggest bringing your children that are at least 8 years and older because there are some elements that would scare little children. Also, some topics might be too difficult for little kids to understand like parent death and family violence – I mean the grandfather is literally trying to physically harm Kubo and his aunts try to kidnap him with violent force. The topics are heavy and meant to be handled as such so if you do not feel like having an in depth conversation with your 6 year old about why Kubo’s dad is missing, or why his mother doesn’t remember him, I would skip this one. If you are trying to connect with your tween before they head off to middle school in the fall, this could be a great last summer flick to catch as a family.

Kubo and the Two Strings is rated PG for thematic elements, scary images, action and peril and has a 101-minute runtime.

Movie Review: #HellorHighWater

Hell or High Water is a welcome respite from the drudgery of this summer's movie season.

Review by Matt Cummings

Early Westerns - and even more recent ones - depict the bad guy as a black-hat wearing psychopath bent on destroying a town or wresting its people into submission. But with a film like the instantly classic Hell or High Water, that villain isn't a person at all, replaced in an interesting turn that makes this one of the best films of the year so far and the first must-see experience in many months.

For brothers Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner Howard (Ben Foster), the 2008 economic collapse has made farming and even basic survival in West Texas a near-impossibility. Faced with massive bills after their mother's death, Toby learns that the local bank has sunk his family into debt and seized the property, in hopes of drilling oil to amass a huge fortune. But Toby has a plan as well, and both he and Tanner set off an elaborate scheme to rob specific banks in the region. While not the best bank robbers, the former convict and unpredictable Tanner soon has local Rangers on their trail, including the soon-to-retire old school Marcus (Jeff Bridges) and his partner Alberto (Jim Birmingham). As the deadline approaches to take back the property, Tanner and Toby run up against Marcus when another robbery turns deadly, forcing each side to question their resolve as the body count begins to rise.

Funny, acerbic as Hell, and ready to punch you in the face if you don't like it, Hell or High Water is also superbly acted, beautifully shot, and a stunningly white-knuckled affair. There's desperation in everyone's voice, as if the entire structure of civilized society is waning at the hands of corporations that care more bottom lines than people. Director David Mackenzie makes us feel this plight vis a vis ordinary people who either force their dim views on people with terrific one-liners or show it in their worn and weathered faces. When Marcus attempts to order food across from one of the banks, he's berated by a craggy waitress who demands he "choose what you don't want" as everyone here eats steaks. He can skip the corn or beans but he's having a steak, and that's the end of it. These title moments permeate Hell or High Water like a glass of fine wine: the script by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario) reacts to every inch of your palette, releasing complex aromas from the psychotic Tanner, to the pragmatic Toby, and the asshole Marcus who berates his Native American partner to the point that someone should have accused him of harassment. That might not sound like a pleasant mixture, but believe me it's instant velvet in your mouth.

The cast is exceptional, with even smaller roles standing out for the few moments they appear, only to fade away like every sad story here. We've always loved Pine for his onscreen presence, and here his interaction with Foster might actually be better than anything he's ever done. Foster has been branded as an the 'on the edge' actor, but when he's so good in roles like Tanner, you find yourself hoping he's never given anything less. Hell or High Water boasts at least five Oscar worthy performances, including our team behind the camera. The fifth in this collection, Bridges is perhaps its best, who takes Marcus through a harrowing 5 minutes in which almost every emotion possible is produced. He makes the whole thing look effortless, thoroughly unseating any doubts we may have had about his frankly shoehorned performances since the excellent True Grit. But it's Mackenzie who keeps the tension taut, forcing the Howards into a spiraling cycle of violence that won't end well for anyone involved.

But just when you think you've got Hell or High Water figured out, Mackenzie grants us a fantastic closing scene that fires a shot across our bow without the use of any gun. It's elaborate in its simplicity and amazingly effective as an epilogue to all the violence we've witnessed. But that's a moment in a movie filled with many that I shouldn't share, because Toby and Tanner's plot to rescue their family farm is as diabolical and brilliant as anything we've seen this year. Others are nimble character studies that know just when to step aside in favor of the next robbery or funny moment. Once dismissed by the industry as an unassailable script, Hell or High Water proudly exercises any demons to deliver both a mesmerizing character tale and an exhilarating ride through West Texas (or New Mexico, based on tax credits offered there) courtesy of an undeniable force of brothers that really do know when to quit.

An instant classic no matter where it may lie on the Western genre scale, Hell or High Water serves as the perfect recipe for the worst box office summer in recent memory. Filled with at least five serious Oscar-level performances, its desperate story set in desperate times should resonate with moviegoers ready for something smarter than the average bear. The only problem might be finding a theater that's hosting it, making any chance for a deep run about as likely as West Texas ever rebuilding after the 2008 collapse. But see Hell or High Water regardless of how far you might have to drive.

Hell or High Water is rated R for some strong violence, language throughout and brief sexuality and has a runtime of 102 minutes.

Movie Review: #BenHur Acting is subpar at best and lacks heart.

First off, the acting is subpar at best and lacks heart.

By: Erika Ashley

Judah Ben-Hur, a wealthy Jewish prince, and his adopted Roman brother, Messala Severus, start out as the best of friends and enjoy their playful competitive spirit. However, Messala feels the constant need to prove himself to the Ben-Hur family and make a name for himself that is not associated with his deceased grandfather’s prior mistakes. Messala flees to join the Roman Military, making his way through the ranks for years, while Judah remains a passive leader amongst his struggling people. Years later the two brothers come together again when the Roman Empire begins to occupy Ben-Hur’s homeland of Jerusalem and a group of radicals end up putting Judah and his family’s lives in danger. Falsely accused of treason Messala is forced to turn his back on his adoptive family and dooms Judah to a life as a galley-slave until his death. More time passes and Judah, fueled by hate, survives a fatal military attack and makes his way back to Jerusalem for his chance at redemption and revenge.

Being that Ben-Hur originally debuted in 1925 as a silent film that was adapted from an 1880 novel bearing the same name, and then was remade by Director – William Wyler in 1959, this 2016 is a far cry from the best known epic of the late 1950s. Wyler’s version was nearly four full hours and featured the largest names in Hollywood at the time. Fast forward nearly 60 years to Director – Timur Bekmambetov’s two hour version this film is utter nonsense if compared to its predecessor.

First off, the acting is subpar at best and lacks heart. We’ve seen Morgan Freeman play the same role a hundred times now and unfortunately is type-cast yet again as the wise old black man that has to guide a broken white man into success. Next the story line is beyond boring with predictable outcomes at each turn. But, yet it still remains sporadic and convoluted. There is a scene where Ben-Hur escapes his slavery and finds himself waking in a tent and suddenly knows all there is to know about healing sick horses so he can barter with a man that wants to return him to the Roman Army. How does he know about horses? It makes no sense other than a prior scene where he walks into a stable at his huge mansion. The audience is just supposed to understand and that he’s a horse whisperer and can be trained in a short montage to become an amazing chariot racer.

Secondly, the cinematography is sloppy and unnecessarily coming out in 2D, 3D, RealD 3D, Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. The effects add nothing to the film and the $100M budget for this film was significantly poorly spent on ridiculous extravagance that does not help in the slightest. The chariot race scene was by far the most interesting part of the movie. It lasted maybe 10 minutes and was filmed with bad angles, choppy cuts, and obvious digital CGI effects. As each racer died or was injured in gory detail I felt mostly bad for the fake horses instead of the racers. BH_05

Besides the poor plotlines and abysmal cinematography, the movie itself was a good 15-20 minutes too long. After the major climax of the film finishes with *SPOILER* Judah winning the chariot race and “killing” his brother, the film continues to show a heavy handed death of Jesus Christ. There were subtle clues sprinkled in the beginning of the film that Jesus was around but then at the end Judah has a complete literal come-to-Jesus moment when he tries to save his life but obviously falls short. Plus, it’s not like he tries very hard, if anything he just witnesses what happens. But, still everything ends up roses for Judah as his family that he once thought was dead comes up alive and miraculously healed, his wife loves him again, he is a free man, him and his brother (whom isn’t dead after all) makeup, and bonus – he’s now a hotshot chariot racer.

Skip this film in theaters, don’t spend the extra price for 3D, RealD 3D, Digital 3D, or IMAX 3D. Wait until it comes out on DVD and rent if you absolutely have to watch it.

Ben-Hur is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and disturbing images and has a 124-minute runtime.

The Lost Boys TV Show Heading To The CW

Despite rumors to the contrary, vampires don't suck (sorry), especially if you’re Warner Bros Television. While it’s been announced that The Vampire Diaries is going into it final season, there are plans afoot to keep the undead alive at the studio with a TV series reboot and complete reimagining of 1987’s The Lost Boys.

That film, directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz and the Coreys (Haim and Feldman), dealt with a pair of Arizona brothers who unexpectedly go up against a local gang of vampires. The intent of the series, being written and produced by iZombie's Rob Thomas, is to thoroughly examine the notion of immortality. Whereas previous entries in this horror subgenre (Angel, Forever Knight, Being Human, etc.) have done so via flashbacks, The Lost Boys promises to take a different approach. Describes Deadline, “This version is being envisioned as a seven-season arc. It will tell a story spanning 70 years, each season chronicling a decade. Season one will be set in San Francisco during the Summer Of Love, 1967. Each season, the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, like the Peter Pan characters who never grow up, remain the same.”

If that indeed is the approach being taken, it means that should the show go seven seasons, it will bring the story into the year 2037, which will result in a fairly unique setting for a vampire story.

Movie Review: #WarDogs

The sobering comedy War Dogs encourages extreme both laughter and forces scorn at a corrupt system.

Review by Matt Cummings

August is typically a pretty bleak month for film, sporting incredible losers from the second week on, as studios keep their more high-profile films for the Labor Day weekend crowds. But with so many high-profile failures this summer, it's quite unclear just what audiences want these days. Luckily, War Dogs proudly stands up to declare its awesomeness, even if its box office chances feel like a slaughter is imminent.

For loser David Packouz (Miles Teller), poor life choices have forced the Miami native into all kinds of dead-end jobs including male massage therapist and selling bed sheets to financially-strapped rest homes. At the same time, his middle-school buddy Efraim (Jonah Hill) is raking in the dough by fulfilling government weapons contracts during the Iraq War. And he's doing it in small batches, thanks to a recent policy of opening up contracts to small-time suppliers. After attending a funeral for a friend, the two reunite and realize that David needs a career reset. The two join forces and almost immediately begin making money. I mean lots of it, most of which is accrued in thoroughly illegal ways, whether it's driving Barettas across the Triangle of Death in Iraq or disguising illegal Chinese AK-47 rounds to score a huge contract. David's expecting girlfriend Iz (Ana de Armas) begins to realize that David's 'career' isn't exactly limited to sipping tea in fashionable foreign hotels, leading her to question whether David can be trusted. But soon, other forces collide as Efraim's wild life and questionable business tactics begin to tear down his company, inviting the wrath of fellow arms dealer Girard (Brdley Cooper) and sending the duo into a criminal freefall. As the FBI closes in on their illegal operation, David must confront Efraim about their company's malfeasance before both are arrested.

War Dogs is the classic example of a movie you first can't help but laugh at, but also find scorning for its deep social message about government corruption. Director/Co-Writer Todd Phillips finally turns in a film that doesn't rely on dick & fart jokes to propel it, gifting his characters with plenty of ulterior motives and pitting them against the evil vices of want and greed. Along with Writers Stephen Chin and Jason Smilovic, Phillips makes a strong argument that these vices are in direct conflict with our better ones by dangling money out there like a carrot. The idea of screwing the government - and thus our soldiers serving abroad - shouldn't appeal to many, but watching these two carry on is so rewarding, because they're really not very good at this whole arms thing. Unlike 2014's Pain and Gain which saw unpleasant people doing unpleasant things to each other, War Dogs adds a scruffier, sophomoric tone than that of a dangerous gun runner. But we also get that here, with the appearance of an acerbic Cooper; it's almost a glorified cameo, but his chemistry with Teller is undeniable and thoroughly enjoyable.

But it's Hill and Teller together that makes for one of the best onscreen duos of 2016. Hill came into his own with 2014's The Wolf of Wall Street, giving DiCaprio a suitable druggie buddy to hang with; here, Teller takes on Hill's former role, and the results couldn't be more hilarious and (much later) poignant. Teller seems long past his Fantastic Four and Divergent miscastings, instead leafrogging over what could have been a series of 21 & Over letdowns by keeping the slimy out and injecting something Phillips brings as well: maturity. Here, Packouz is reaping the bitter fruits of years as a rudderless teen, sucked into Efraim's life because of circumstance and poor choices; Packouz needs a break, and although Efraim can give it to him, Packouz will pay a high price for aligning himself with his buddy.

Phillips also benefits from turning in a more mature work, successfully adding tension to the fun, then upping things with a white-knuckle attitude that makes for a great ending. He also adds a new emotion absent from his Hangover days: fear. Once the machine begins turning, our characters enter a dark world they cannot control. This isn't the local bar brawl or a wild night in Vegas, but a real test to ensure his characters' very survival. With War Dogs, Phillips is almost admitting that his belligerent Hangover days do come with a price. Phillips' long time DP Lawrence Sher also seems to mark significant professional growth, turning in a great-looking film with varied climes and moods. The high-rolling of Vegas (an obvious Phillips choice) is contrasted with the stark landscapes of third world countries including Morocco, Bucharest, and Romania. In many ways, War Dogs feels like a resume to studios like Marvel and DC who might be looking for the next bigshot director. Considering the final product, I'd say Phillips and Sher could be fielding more phonecalls for potentially better projects.

If there was one issue I had with War Dogs is its rather on-the-nose choices of classic rock which also seems way overdone. But that's a minor complaint, because the script and performances are so gripping. Even the underused Armas brings a strong sense of humanity to Iz, creating a moral anchor for Packouz that Efraim doesn't have. She's not the bimbo comedic element of Phillips' past, and that's certainly refreshing. Audiences are sure to wonder if the Bush administration's efforts to privatize war has created a more dangerous monster, a move that not only seems purposeful but an important element to consider if you decide to take a chance here. I hope you do.

Filled with great performances, sharp commentary, and a comedic tone you'll feel slightly guilty at chuckling over, War Dogs provides us with a much-needed respite from the August bx office doldrums. It's a great coming-of-age moment for Phillips, who seems ready to up his game in a way that Ghostbusters helmer Paul Feig doesn't seem quite ready (or able) to do. And yet, I'd be shocked to see War Dogs fare better than the superior The Nice Guys. It's now unclear what audiences want from their movies, but at least I can't argue that efforts like these offer a much better alternative to the loud and obnoxious slew of recent high-failure blockbusters.

War Dogs is rated R for language throughout, drug use and some sexual references and has a runtime of 114 minutes.

ACTRESS JOEY KING LANDS LEAD IN ‘WISH UPON’ DIRECTED BY JOHN LEONETTI
FOR BROAD GREEN PICTURES.

Broad Green Pictures announced today that Joey King (The Conjuring, “Fargo”) has signed on to play the lead in the studio’s horror thriller Wish Upon, which will be directed by John Leonetti (Annabelle). The movie is being produced by Busted Shark Production’s Sherryl Clark (Viral, Cloverfield) and was written by Barbara Marshall (“The Listener”). Production is expected to begin in the fall.

When 16-year-old misfit Claire finds a magic box that promises a chance at the life she’s always wanted, she never could have guessed that each wish would demand a deadly payment.

“I was mesmerized by Joey’s performance on the set of The Conjuring,” said Leonetti. “I am looking forward to watching her bring Claire to life in Wish Upon.”

The deal was brokered on behalf of King by Brian Nosokoff at UTA, Dan Spilo, Industry Entertainment and Howard Fishman, HWHM+F.

Natalie Portman Is Done With Marvel

Looks like Thor is a single god again. According to Natalie Portman, her time in the MCU is at an end. Jane Foster’s absence from Thor: Ragnarok is likely to be a permanent development.

“As far as I know, I’m done,” she revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "I don’t know if maybe one day, they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever, but as far as I know, I’m done. It was a great thing to be a part of.”

Of course, Portman’s astrophysicist has been rather left behind by the evolving state of the MCU. We last saw her in Thor: The Dark World and, although Thor mentioned her at Tony Stark's party in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, she’s inevitably faded into the background since her Norse love interest returned to Asgard.

If true, it’s a departure from Marvel’s policy of keeping its players on long contracts, even if she seems to have left the window open for a return down the line. Don’t bet against that Avengers 7 prediction coming true one day, albeit with a different title. Portman has her Jackie Kennedy film, Jackie, on the way, as well as a turn in Terrence Malick’s next movie Weightless.

DOOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN’S THE FANTASTIC FOUR FINALLY SEEING THE LIGHT

Uncork’d Entertainment acquires the heavily-anticipated DOOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN’S THE FANTASTIC FOUR

Highly-anticipated documentary DOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN’S THE FANTASTIC FOUR, from writer-director Marty Langford, will be distributed in the US and Canada by Uncork’d Entertainment.

Chronicling the history of Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four (1994), DOOMED! features never before seen footage from the production as well as new on-camera interviews with cast and crew including Mr. Corman, Jay Underwood, Michael Bailey Smith, Joseph Culp, Alex Hyde-White and Rebecca Staab.

Langford says DOOMED! was “courted by a number of distributors and he had the luxury of choice. But once Keith at Uncork’d explained his company’s vision and strategy for our film, we realized that he was obviously the right one. He’s a terrific guy, a great distributor, and partner that we’re lucky to have.”

Uncork’d Entertainment President Keith Leopard says he’s excited to be releasing the definitive account of the never-released movie production and its Fantastic background.

“The average moviegoer doesn’t know that, ten years before releasing Tim Story’s version, Roger Corman was asked to produce a Fantastic Four movie. Unbeknownst to cast and crew, the film was never going to be released though – and for a variety of reasons. Doomed! is such a compelling documentary - and not just for comic book movies but anyone intrigued by the ins and outs of Hollywood and business. In short, it’s a Fantastic movie.”

Leopard’s enthusiasm for the film won producer Mark Sikes over.

"The reason Marty and I chose Uncork'd was Keith's passion for the film. He had a great reputation, but what really impressed us was how passionate he was about the film. We could tell he really liked the film and we knew we needed someone who understood it wasn't your typical documentary."

Uncork'd Entertainment will release DOOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN’S THE FANTASTIC FOUR on VOD 10/11 and DVD on 12/20.

Uncork’d Entertainment’s recent releases include the theatrically released documentary JANEY MAKES A PLAY, Lou Simon’s horror-thriller ALL GIRLS WEEKEND, RESTORATION and A HAUNTING IN CAWDOR. The distrib’s upcoming releases include FEED THE DEVIL, released in August, John Fallon’s anticipated thriller THE SHELTER, and SPAGHETTIMAN, released theatrically in the Fall.

Enter For A Chance To Win Passes To See A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS In PHOENIX

Enter for a chance to see A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS on August 25th at 7:00 PM in PHOENIX.

A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS is based on the memories of Amos Oz, growing up in Jerusalem in the years before Israeli statehood with Arieh, his academic father and Fania, his dreamy, imaginative mother. They were one of many Jewish families who moved to Palestine from Europe during the 1930s and 40s to escape persecution. Arieh was cautiously hopeful for the future but Fania wanted much more. The terror of the war and running from home had been followed by the tedium of everyday life, which weighed heavily on Fania’s spirit. Unhappy in her marriage and intellectually stifled, she would make up stories of adventures (like treks across the desert) to cheer herself up and entertain her 10-year-old son Amos. He became so enraptured when she read him poetry and explained about words and language; it would become an influence on his writing for the rest of his life. When independence didn’t bring the renewed sense of life that Fania had hoped for, she slipped into solitude and sadness. Unable to help her, Amos was forced to say an untimely good-bye. As he witnessed the birth of Israel, he had to come to terms with his own new beginning.

Bad Boys For Life Will Be Released In 2018

The saga of a third (and potentially fourth) Bad Boys movie continues, with some actual good news. Joe Carnahan remains attached to wrangle Will Smith's Detective Mike Lowery and Martin Lawrence's Detective Marcus Burnett back into action for a third dose of action and quips, and the third movie now has a new title: Bad Boys For Life.

One thing it doesn't have any more is a 2017 release date: this movie has had a history of missing potential dates, most recently shifting from February 17 next year to June 2. Now Sony has pencilled in January 12, 2018 as the next potential spot.

Carnahan was brought in last year after several previous script drafts tried to generate a workable movie, but nothing came together, a process also not helped by Will Smith's busy schedule. Now, though, it looks like Bad Boys For Life (a reference to a line in Bad Boys II) might finally make an appearance. As for that floating, potential fourth movie? It took aim at a July 2019 release, and Sony still has it on the books, but no one yet knows if the move of the third will impact the fourth.

Scott Eastwood To Star In Ecstasia

THR is reporting The 'Fast 8' actor will be joined by Matilda Lutz as a couple who live in a world where love no longer exists during their final days together before their love expires.

After tackling the world of illegal street racing in Fast 8, Scott Eastwood is switching to Hollywood's sci-fi lane.

The actor, who is poised for a breakout year with a string of high-profile projects scheduled for 2017, is set to star in Wayne Kramer's Ecstasia. He will be joined by Italian actress Matilda Lutz (The Rings) as a couple who live in a world where love no longer exists during their final days together before their love expires.

Kramer (The Cooler, Running Scared) also wrote the screenplay.

The film marks a reteaming of Eastwood and Sentient Entertainment's Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin, who recently completed the heist thriller Overdrive with the actor and Ana de Armas. Tab and Tuffin are producing Ecstasia alongside Matthew Chausse and Eastwood.

Production is scheduled to begin in spring 2017 in South Africa. Ingenious, Film Afrika and Red Sea Media will finance.

The project will be introduced to buyers at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. UTA, which reps Eastwood, is handling domestic rights, while Red Sea will sell international rights.

After playing supporting roles in Suicide Squad (as Lieutenant GQ Edwards), Oliver Stone's Snowden and Ben Affleck's Live by Night, Eastwood — the son of Clint — has graduated to studio movie leading man. He recently wrapped Fast 8, where he plays a newly created character who fills the void left by the death of the franchise's Paul Walker. Eastwood also will star in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom alongside John Boyega.

Lutz also is having a moment, most recently having toplined Paramount's third installment of The Ring franchise, this time titled Rings (the horror film opens Oct. 28). She also recently starred in Gabriele Muccino's Summertime.
