OLD FASHIONED Is Picking A Fight With "Fifty Shades"

Who’s picking a fight with “Fifty Shades”? OLD FASHIONED, a small-budget indie, climbs in the ring with Valentine Weekend’s studio behemoth.

The release of the new “Fifty Shades of Grey” trailer has a video/trailer response from underdog OLD FASHIONED, also opening nationwide on Valentine’s weekend 2015. Take a look at the response video below:

OLD FASHIONED writer/director Rik Swartzwelder opens with the obvious. “Why would a modestly budgeted romantic movie like OLD FASHIONED want to jump in the arena and go toe-to-toe in a David vs. Goliath standoff with a cultural juggernaut?

“Well, honestly, because we believe it matters,” he answers. “And I gotta believe—I find it impossible not to believe—that deep down we want to celebrate something more than ‘Fifty Shades.’”

OLD FASHIONED, starring Elizabeth Ann Roberts and Rik Swartzwelder, will be in theaters February 13th.

Dumb and Dumber To Review: All Hail the Second Dumbing

The comedy sequel is a worthy successor, even though it's almost 2 decades late.
Review by Brandon Wolfe
Comedy sequels are a juice rarely worth the squeeze. You could count on one hand the number of comedic sequels that have matched or surpassed their predecessors with fingers left to spare. For whatever reason, recreating the unique magic of a successful comedy has proven historically difficult for Hollywood. At their worst, such sequels are carbon-copied exercises in laziness like the Hangover sequels, limply retracing the steps of what worked in the original film to vastly diminished success. Generally the best one can hope for from a comedy sequel is something like 22 Jump Street, which lacks the freshness and inspiration of the first film, but has just enough energy and new jokes to at least justify its existence.

Given the disappointment-strewn battlefield of comedy sequelization, there was every reason in the world to be wary of, if not outright terrified by, the prospect of Dumb and Dumber To. After all, this isn’t just the follow-up to a solid comedy from a couple of years ago. The original ‘Dumb and Dumber’ is a bona fide comedy classic going back twenty years. It arguably holds a place among the funniest films ever made. If something like Horrible Bosses 2 comes out and disappoints, no one is going to be too broken up about it, but Dumb and Dumber? Messing that up would hurt. One need only look back to last year’s Anchorman 2, another belated sequel to a stone-cold classic, for a cautionary tale. That film came and went, leaving no impression whatsoever. Where the original Anchorman was quoted into oblivion, find me anyone who can remember two jokes from ‘Anchorman 2.’ It wasn’t bad, it was simply forgettable, which is far worse. At least bad you remember.

It’s with a huge sigh of relief that I can confirm that Dumb and Dumber To manages to beat the comedy-sequel curse. It’s a worthy successor to the original and extremely funny in its own right. Better still, even though it echoes the first film in several ways, it’s not beholden to it. It has a fresh crop of jokes to play around with and the bulk of them are really great. It doesn’t feel like a lethargic retread, which immediately places it ahead of its comedy-sequel brethren.

Once again, we follow the misadventures of Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey), lifelong friends and accident-prone ne’er-do-wells with single-digit IQs. The film opens by filling us in on what the two have been up to for the last twenty years (in a terrific joke that I’ll not spoil, even if all the trailers have). Reunited, the duo sets out on a mission. Harry has a failing kidney and is in desperate need of a transplant. After first hitting up his parents, Harry learns that they are not a biological match to him for reasons that he should have figured out decades ago were he not an imbecile. But a postcard from 1991 informs him that he had a daughter by local trollop Fraida Felcher (Kathleen Turner) which he never knew about. With the knowledge that there’s a grown woman out there who is his genetic match, Harry sets out in pursuit of the child he never knew. Lloyd comes along, ostensibly to help his buddy attain that much-needed kidney, but more because he’s once again developed an instantaneous infatuation, this time with the photograph of Penny (Rachel Melvin), Harry’s daughter.

Dumb and Dumber To then begins to resemble the Dumb and Dumber of old. Again, the boys head out on the open road in pursuit of a girl that Lloyd is hot for, and again they find themselves obliviously embroiled in a criminal scheme, this time involving Adele Pichlow (Laurie Holden), the scheming wife of Penny’s adopted father, noted scientist Dr. Pichlow (Steve Tom). Upon learning that Penny has set off to a conference to accept an award on her father’s behalf, Harry and Lloyd are assigned the task of delivering a package to her to present to the science community, which Pichlow claims will greatly benefit mankind, thus placing this priceless commodity into the four worst hands conceivable. Adele, a gold-digger actively plotting her husband’s murder, enlists her secret lover Travis (Rob Riggle) to accompany the duo on their quest, the better to dispose of them and commandeer the package.

Yet, though Dumb and Dumber To works within the same basic template of the first film (Travis essentially fills the exact same role that Mike Starr did in the original), the film doesn’t go overboard on callbacks, a trap that comedy sequels constantly fall into. There are certainly some (Lloyd still has pitiful Binaca aim and introduces us to the SECOND most annoying sound in the world), but the sequel comes up with enough new material to avoid feeling like a cover version of something we’ve already seen. At times, it even attempts to subvert expectations toward sequel iconography, as with the hilarious handling of the Mutt Cutts van’s reemergence. It’s to the sequel’s immense credit that it finds a wealth of new moronic things for Harry and Lloyd to do and say instead of merely regurgitating the familiar.

The film also represents a return to form for the Farrelly Brothers, who haven’t made a movie this funny since their ‘90s heyday. After exploding out of the gate with the original Dumb, Kingpin, and There’s Something About Mary, the Farrellys have spent the 21st Century churning out a series of middling comedies, none of which did much to recapture the initial spark of that first trio of films. But there’s something about Harry and Lloyd that gets the brothers’ comedic juices flowing like wine. This film is a sequel and yet it feels far more comedically energized than any of the original films the Farrellys have made in the last 15 years.

The most remarkable aspect, however, is how easily Carrey and Daniels step back into these roles. There’s no rustiness whatsoever, in spite of the two-decade gap. This is all the more impressive since Daniels hasn’t really done much in the way of comedy since the first film, and now works on HBO’s ‘The Newsroom,’ which is about as far from Dumb and Dumber as you can get (though I’m told it’s both funny and dumb in its own ways). And though Carrey is still thought of as a comedic actor, the truth is that he’s gravitated away from material like this over the past decade, working on lower-key or higher-minded projects when he works at all. These two had every excuse in the world to be off their game, yet they slip right back into both their characters and their easygoing goofball chemistry like 1994 never ended. They’re ably abetted this time by Rachel Melvin as Penny, who puts an adorably ditzy spin on the characters’ unique brand of idiocy.

Dumb and Dumber To is the big surprise of the fall season. There was no reason to expect a comedy this strong after twenty years on ice. Carrey has been notoriously sequel-averse throughout his career ever since (and perhaps directly because of) ‘Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls’ but ‘To’ works so well that one hopes we get to see Harry and Lloyd yet again somewhere down the road. Even if that road stretches all the way to 2034.

Jai Courtney In Talks To Join Suicide Squad?

Terminator: Genesys” star Jai Courtney is in talks for a major role in Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad” that could prove to be Batman villain Deadshot, sources tell Variety.

Tom Hardy, Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are also in various stages of discussions to join the super-villainous movie, which is being written and directed by “Fury” filmmaker David Ayer.

“Suicide Squad,” produced by Charles Roven, will be released in summer 2016.

Warner Bros. had no comment on this story.

Based on the DC comic book, the story centers on the team of super villains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. The catch: Their mission will probably kill them all.

Warner Bros. is courting Leto to play the Joker in the film, Robbie for Harley Quinn and Hardy for Rick Flag, a founding member of the Suicide Squad. As for Smith, it’s uncertain which character he will play, but sources say it’s likely the Flash nemesis Digger Harkness a.k.a. Captain Boomerang.

Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, who co-stars in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” may also join the film.

Though the character of Deadshot isn’t as well known as Lex Luthor or the Joker, he’s a key villain in the “Batman” comic book universe. Also known as Floyd Lawton, Deadshot has a major death wish and a strong bond with Catwoman, although there’s been no confirmation yet that Catwoman will make an appearance in the pic.

WB could obviously give Deadshot and other “Suicide Squad” members their own standalone films should the super-villain movie prove a success.

As for Courtney, “Suicide Squad” would mark yet another major Hollywood franchise the Australian has landed in a short amount of time. He broke out as John McClane’s son in “A Good Day to Die Hard” and followed that up as a villain in “Divergent,” with plans to reprise the role in “Insurgent,” which bows next year.

He also plays Kyle Reese in the next “Terminator” pic, “Terminator: Genisys,” which opens next summer and co-stars Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke as her son, John.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Extended Trailer

A new extended Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer that made its way online today offers a few seconds of fresh footage for famished fans. For the most part, the new trailer combines the scenes we already saw in the teaser trailer from Oct. 22 and the extended trailer from Oct. 29. (Has Marvel ever considered numbering these things? Just a thought.) But there are a couple of new glimpses to sate Marvel obsessives — and also a few added shots of Samsung product placement, which makes sense, considering the new-ish trailer is an exclusive promotion that was released on Samsung devices this morning. (Inevitably, the video has now made its way to YouTube.)

Most intriguing for movie fans is the extended footage of Ultron’s confrontation with the Avengers that appears early in the trailer: Now, in addition to the moment spotted in the previous trailer, we get an evil James Spader chuckle, a line about how “there’s only one path to peace: your extinction,” and the visual of Ultron’s minions flying through the windows of Avengers Tower.

TV Review: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “The Writing On The Wall”

TV Review: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “The Writing on the Wall”
By: Brandon Wolfe

The Writing on the Wall” is a busy episode of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ which is a good thing. The show has spent so much time dawdling around aimlessly that it’s good to see it breaking a sweat. This week it follows two separate story threads, one involving Coulson and the other Ward, to varying degrees of success. The episode unpacks a lot of information, including a revelation that might provide a window into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It continues the show’s baby steps toward becoming something perhaps not entirely bad.

The tattooed man who was teased in the previous episode emerges again this week, picking up a woman in a bar and taking her home. We learn that both of these people are former S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who were treated with the alien-derived GHD-25 anti-death serum that both Coulson and Skye were given. It seems that when Coulson was running the T.A.H.I.T.I. program (that acronym is still very funny to me), he would have the agents mind-wiped after and given new lives to allow them to maintain their sanity. Now Tattoo Man is killing the other amnesiac agents and carving those alien symbols into their flesh. The man’s insanity, coupled with the retconned revelation that Garrett’s first-season villainy was also due to the serum, gives Coulson some pause as it begs the question of whether such homicidal behavior is in his and Skye’s future as well. Determined to learn more about the program that he has been forced to forget, Coulson undergoes a dangerous treatment to forcibly wrest free the memories locked away deep within his brain.

After sidelining Skye in Ward’s old hi-tech Lecter cage (the better to give birth to future tedious discussions about trust, no doubt), Coulson tracks down the killer right as he is about to attack another memory-purged former agent and learns the episode’s big revelation: Those alien symbols are the blueprints to a mysterious city that the aliens whose DNA makes up the GHD-25 serum were searching for years ago. It’s difficult to know what to do with this information right now. There is some speculation that this city might factor into the future Marvel movies, possibly even as far ahead as 2018’s ‘Inhumans’ movie. That is very tantalizing, but it’s a bit hard to believe that Marvel would start placing such huge chunks of its film mythology into this wobbly show that very few people are watching. ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has always existed to piggyback off of the films, not the other way around. Still, the idea of the show offering a glimpse into the distant future of the film universe is highly appealing, and if true, would make the series feel like a vital cog in the operation for the first time since its inception.

But in the meantime, the great hope here is that everything to do with Coulson’s resurrection, re-assimilation and mental health is now officially put to bed. This has been the ball of string that the show has batted around since its pilot episode and it has all grown far beyond wearying. This ground has been trodden ad infinitum and it hasn’t been intriguing since the very beginning. “The Writing on the Wall” appears to close the book on the whole affair once and for all and we can only hope that it stays shut. It’s enough with Coulson’s brain already.

The better part of the episode concerns Ward, which seems like an odd thing to see myself type into words. When we last saw him, he was twisting in the wind after killing off the agents transporting him. It isn’t long before the team picks up his scent and, in a curiously well-done extended sequence, we see Triplett, Morse and Hunter attempting to clandestinely intercept on Ward, only to have him outmaneuver them with his keen spy insight as well as with the vest of C-4 wired to his midsection. ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has always been completely ineffectual as a spy series, but here it actually gets some mileage out of operatives sniffing out each other with their powers of perception. It’s still an adjustment to witness the show doing anything with something resembling skill.

Although the show still seems to be doubling down on Ward as a villain, the episode reveals that he is setting out to find his brother, the senator whom we know is dirty. While ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is inching toward competence, the notion of Ward getting his hands dirty to stop the REAL bad guys and worm his way back into his former comrades’ good graces seems like a very ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ thing to have happen. After all, the show still seems convinced that some alleged spark exists between Ward and Skye, and I can’t imagine it doesn’t want to tinker around with that corker of a union in upcoming episodes. Hopefully the series realizes that Ward is only at all interesting as a villain and that it continues to employ him solely in that vein, but we haven’t quite arrived at the point where ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has earned the benefit of the doubt.

But it is starting to do some things right, it must be said. In addition to action sequences that no longer look pathetically cheap, the show now actually has a large enough ensemble that the strain of focusing on the same six characters is no longer an issue the way it was last year. There are actually enough characters knocking about now that the insufferable FitzSimmons barely even register this week, which is certainly welcome. I don’t yet have enough faith in the show to believe that they’ll do justice to all of these people, since they couldn’t even make it work with just the six, but at least there are enough agents on hand for things like the Ward sting to work properly. I don’t expect ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ to right itself overnight, but I’ll give it credit for at least starting to turn the wheel in that direction.

Starz To Deliver Ash vs. Evil Dead Series

Starz is bringing Evil Dead to TV.

The premium network has greenlighted an original series, entitled Ash vs. Evil Dead, that will serve as a follow-up to the horror comedy film franchise, it was announced Monday.

Original Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell will return for the 10-episode half-hour series, slated for a 2015 premiere.

The series marks Raimi and Tapert's return to Starz following their Spartacus run. Raimi revealed plans to continue the Evil Dead story on the small screen back at Comic-Con.

Campbell reprises his role as the title character Ash, a stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last three decades avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons — personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its evil grip.

Raimi will direct the pilot, which he will co-write with his brother, Ivan (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), and Tom Spezialy (Chuck, Reaper, Desperate Housewives). Sam Raimi will executive produce, along with Tapert and Campbell. Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce, while Aaron Lam (Spartacus) will produce.

"Starz first worked with Sam and Rob on Spartacus, and we are thrilled to be back in business with them,” said Carmi Zlotnik, managing director of Starz. “With Sam writing and directing and Bruce Campbell returning to the screen, we are certain the show will give Evil Dead fans around the world the fix they’ve been craving.”

“Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it,” said Sam Raimi.
"I'm really excited to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide — it's going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor,” said Campbell.

“Starz has always been a great creative partner and we are excited to be working with them on this project,” added Tapert.

The original Evil Dead film, released in 1981, centered on Ash and his group of friends who travel to an isolated cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release demons intent on possessing the living. The film spawned two sequels and a 2013 reboot, which earned $97 million at the worldwide box office.

Ash vs. Evil Dead was packaged by CAA, APA and Hansen Jacobson. Starz will retain domestic and international multiplatform rights, including TV, home entertainment and digital. Campbell is repped by APA and Jacobson Russell Saltz Nassim & de la Torre.

This marks the latest cult property to be rebooted following Showtime's limited-series order of David Lynch's Twin Peaks. For Starz, the new Evil Dead series joins a scripted portfolio that includes Survivor's Remorse, Outlander, Da Vinci's Demons, Power, Black Sails and the upcoming Flesh and Bone.

TV Review: Gotham “The Mask”

TV Review: Gotham “The Mask”
By: Brandon Wolfe

After last week’s narrative pyrotechnics concerning Gotham City’s ensuing mob war and the Penguin’s key role in it, ‘Gotham’ shifts back into procedural mode, a mode that it still hasn’t quite cracked how to do well with. With the more interesting story threads largely moved to the backburner this week, Gordon and Bullock are back at work on a more standard case, and the episode suffers for it.

“The Mask” concerns a financial firm that exercises the unusual hiring process of having its young hotshot prospects fight each other to the death for a seat at the table, all to satisfy the whims of its deranged CEO, Richard Sionis. When the body (with the gruesome addition of a severed finger in its mouth) of a failed prospect is recovered, Gordon and Bullock begin poking around and begin to notice that virtually all of Sionis’ charges around the office bear some form of battle scarring. This all leads to a confrontation between Gordon and Sionis at one of the warehouses where these bouts are held and broadcast for the amusement of the firm’s partners, where Gordon quickly loses the upper hand and it look for a time as though none of his police colleagues are coming to his aid.

This scenario, essentially mashing up ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ with ‘Fight Club,’ seems to be the writers’ attempt at satire of the cutthroat nature of corporate culture, but it doesn’t really land. Nothing about the storyline really lands, for that matter. But given that Sionis appears to be the series’ version of the villain Black Mask, it stands to reason that we will revisit him at a later date, with the hopes that future storylines will find greater success with him than this one.

Another area we can only hope the series will do better with eventually revolves around Barbara Gordon, who is still handed the thankless task of sitting around Gordon’s apartment to grouse at him about how he is pushing her away. All the overheated dialogue that this character has to spout each week continues to sound hopelessly inauthentic, even in the greater context of a show that doesn’t exactly do dialogue well in the first place. Over the course of the episode, it appears that Barbara decides to leave Gordon, but there’s no way we’re getting off that easy. The show needs to find a role for the character to play beyond constantly haranguing Gordon about not letting her into his world. As it stands, it just seems to go around in circles.

But Barbara is hardly the only character that ‘Gotham’ doesn’t have a handle on. In addition to Selina Kyle and Mrs. Cobblepot, two characters that the series continues to shoehorn into the proceedings without seeming to know why, there’s also the eternal problem of young Bruce Wayne. His portion of the story this week is better than usual, as he’s pushed out of the house and into a prep school by Alfred, who feels the boy needs to be around peers. While attempting to find his place, Bruce is menaced by a bully named Tommy Eliot (who will become the character Hush in his later days), who likes to rub the murders of Bruce’s parents’ in our young hero’s face. With the encouragement of Alfred, Bruce decides to strike back at his tormenter by going to the boy’s house and pummeling his face, with the promise that Alfred will further hone Bruce’s fighting prowess from here on out.

This is almost certainly the best material that the Bruce Wayne character has been handed so far on ‘Gotham’ and the show is doing a solid job at making Alfred a tough old cuss instead of a tweedy butler, but it seems to have been beamed in from a completely different show altogether. The show needs to decide once and for all whose story ‘Gotham’ is, Gordon’s or Bruce’s, because there really isn’t an effective way for it to be both.

While Gordon is stuck idling in the same straight-arrow setting indefinitely, Bullock has become the more interesting member of the duo. Established as a slovenly, hopelessly corrupt boor, Bullock has grown as both a character and a cop over these eight episodes, and he gets the episode’s best moment when he loudly chastises the entire precinct over their cowardly unwillingness to assist Gordon in any way, even when the man’s life is hanging in the balance, a speech rousing enough that it even survives Bullock’s unfortunate use of the word “asshat.” ‘Gotham’ hasn’t displayed a tremendous amount of character growth thus far (aside from Bruce already being halfway to becoming Batman before his voice has even deepened), but the strides Bullock has made are noteworthy and admirable.

As always, ‘Gotham’ lives and dies by its Penguin. Robin Lord Taylor continues to be the straw that stirs the drink here, whether bluntly robbing a woman of her jewelry on the street, tensely facing down Fish Mooney as an equal at the bargaining table or menacing a Falcone lieutenant for information (the less said about the scene with the creepy, eccentrically accented Mama Penguin, however, the better). Penguin’s power play and rapid climb up the criminal ladder represent the series at its strongest, and Taylor’s work contains the personality that so much of the rest of the series is lacking. If ‘Gotham’ can spread some of that flavor around to the areas where it’s sorely needed, maybe it will blossom into something stronger than its present incarnation. The Penguin shouldn’t have all the fun.

Dwayne Johnson & Kevin Hart To Star In Central Intelligence

New Line is hoping that a combo of two of its biggest stars can help it catch some of the box office success enjoyed by the likes of the Jump Street films. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart are partnering up for a new buddy action comedy called Central Intelligence.

We’re The Millers director Rawson Marshall Thurber will make this one, which finds Hart as a former high school sports star contemplating his next school reunion while working as an accountant. Before the event, a former classmate (Johnson), who used to be a bullied loser back in the day, gets in touch. He’s not bullied much these days – he’s played by Johnson after all, and we’re fairly sure the only thing that could bully that man would be Smaug – as he’s now a CIA contract killer who ropes Hart into stopping a plot to sell classified military secrets.

And this isn’t exactly a brand new project: it has been floating around since at least 2009, when Universal picked up the original script by Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen and attached Ed Helms to the role Hart is now playing. Since then, it’s been through the keyboards of Horrible Bosses 2 duo Sean Anders and John Morris and Thurber himself, who has been working on the draft that presumably will see the light of day when he starts cranking the cameras next spring.
