Movie Review: #WindRiver A Perfect Thriller!

Suspenseful. A perfect thriller! RAMA has returned. The screenwriter who gave us “Sicario” and “Hell or High Water” has come back with “Wind River” which he also directed and I am now convinced more than ever that Taylor Sheridan is one of the best storytellers of our time. There’s something about his thrillers that are just so cunning and sharp and profound, like a great American classic, even novelist Dennis Lehane probably couldn’t come up with materials that are as skillfully played as this. And with “Wind River” Sheridan’s personal artistry mission to do some effort to right the wrongs that the system has committed against the Native Americans, continues. The story is about a rookie FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) who teams up with a tracker/hunter (Jeremy Renner) with a tragic past in order to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation. Sheridan has tackled themes surrounding the Native Americans before but with this latest one, it’s

Movie Review: #DetroitMovie One of the most important films you'll ever see.

One of the most important films you'll ever see. RAMA is back. Even if Kathryn Bigelow’s 3Detroit movie may not purposely intend on pointing out the continued failures of our justice system with regards to police crime in today’s world, it succeeds in doing exactly that. This is a raw and disturbing depiction of an even more disturbing true story that for one reason or another had been stuck as some kind of historical footnote for the past fifty years but it is timely as ever and it’s one of the most important films you’ll ever see. The director who gave us “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty” proves once again, with “Detroit,” that she is not one to run away from controversial subject matter. Written by her frequent collaborator, Mark Boal, “Detroit” is set during the most terrifying civil unrest that rocked the iconic motor city in the summer of 1967. The story zooms in on the Algiers Motel incident involving the death of three black men and the brutal beatings of n

Movie Review: #GirlsTrip A pretty good time

A pretty good time RAMA is back. Although Girls Trip ’s sex-crazed raunchy comedy loses its fuel halfway through and ultimately falls off the cliff of its own accord, the friendship themes are decent enough to carry the rest of the film to the end. I don’t know if it’s any better than that other female-centric party movie this season featuring mostly white cast, “Rough Night,” but “Girls Trip” in many respects is certainly more engaging. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee who gave us “The Best Man” franchise, “ GirlsTrip ” stars Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett, and Tiffany Haddish as four life long best friends who’ve decided to reunite again for the big Essence Festival in New Orleans. Each of them tries their best to show the other that they’re in a good position in their life right now, relationship-wise and career-wise as they wildly dance and drink and romance into the night. But that success facade comes with secrets that will force them to rekindle their sisterhood.

Movie Review: #WishUpon

It's like a bad parody of "Final Destination" RAMA is back. The best way to describe the movie Wish Upon is that it’s like a bad parody of the “Final Destination franchise. There may be a decent thriller somewhere in “Wish Upon," a thriller that could take you back to some of ‘90s classics like “I Know What You Did Last Summer” perhaps, but unfortunately, it’s hidden underneath mediocre and laughable moments. Directed by John R. Leonetti, starring Joey King as 17-year old Claire who gets bullied at school and hates that her dad struggles financially, in addition to their struggling to move on from the fact that a few years ago, Claire’s mother committed suicide. All that changes when an old music box’s powers grant Claire’s wishes, she finally gets everything she’s ever wanted. But the box requires a deadly price for its users. You know one of those movies that are just so bad, they crack you up, all of a sudden you find yourself laughing instead of getting

Movie Review: #WarForThePlanetOfTheApes Extraordinary

Apes, together, strong! RAMA is back. War For The Planet Of The Apes is extraordinary. It’s got Oscar written all over it. Simply one of this year’s best. Goes to prove that with the right technology and the right storytelling quality and a perfectly clear end-goal, a reboot of an old franchise can get better and better with each installment. Written by Mark Bomback and Matt Reeves who directed it, in “War For The Planet of The Apes,” Caesar and his apes try their best to let humans know that they don’t want war. But a tragedy occurs which forces Caesar to track down and confront a ruthless colonel. As his vengeful quest goes on, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and must ultimately face the decision that will determine the fate of both species. What’s incredible about “War for The Planet of The Apes” in my opinion is that it doesn’t just offer the final conflict between man and apes. The true grit of the story lies in the characters’ battling their own personal demons

Movie Review: #SpiderManHomecoming

Iron Spider: Homecoming Rama is back So here’s my review of Iron Spider Homecoming.. ehm.. I meant to say #SpiderManHomecoming. It’s an incredibly fun teen movie but it’s not perfect. I think Tom Holland is a great Peter Parker, he’s got the character down spot on. No offense to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield but Tom Holland’s version is like straight out of the pages. But with this reboot, they basically plaster Iron Man’s previous drama on to Spider-Man in addition to the new tech-based suit, so I’m not sure if that’s going to sit well with all the fans. The events take place right after the colossal airport fight in “Captain America: Civil War,” young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is stoked about helping Iron Man and looking forward to the next mission. But he seems to have been sidelined by his new mentor, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) Peter goes about his high school life with his best friend and decathlon classmates, when Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as

Movie Review: 47 Meters Down Scary. Thrilling. Pulse-pounding

Scary. Thrilling. Pulse-pounding RAMA is back. 47 Meters Down is scary, it’s thrilling and pulse-pounding and it’s sexy. One of the craziest shark films I’ve ever seen and one of the most fun times I’ve had in theaters this year. I understand that this particular genre has been somewhat belittled because of that outrageous cheesy “Sharknado” franchise, but I guarantee you that more than anything, “47 Meters Down” is an enjoyable survival film. Mandy Moore and Claire Holt play two sisters, one is trying to rebound after a devastating break-up, she often plays it safe, while the other is more daring, a risk-taker. Some of the locals persuade them to go shark diving where they’re supposed to be in a protective cage deep in the open sea surrounded by the majestic Great Whites, but when their cage suddenly breaks away from their boat, they find themselves at the bottom of the seabed and the race against time begins. Not only will they have to evade the savage sharks, their oxygen

Movie Review: All Eyez One Me

Textbook biopic. TV Movie quality RAMA is back. Whereas “ Straight Outta Compton ” managed to make N.W.A. appear to be even more legendary than they already were, All Eyez One Me unfortunately brings the legendary Tupac Shakur down to a TV movie quality. This is a standard textbook biopic that neither cinematically impresses nor shines a new light to the much known iconic figure in hip-hop history. Directed by Benny Boom, newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays the late great Tupac Shakur in “All Eyez On Me” which chronicles his rise to superstardom as a rapper, actor, poet, activist and it even shows you his struggles in prison and in his time at Death Row Records which was led by one of the most famous short-tempered men alive, Suge Knight. One thing that this movie did perfectly however is the casting, all the actors, especially Demetrius Shipp. Jr., look a lot like the real life people they play. The next time Snoop Dogg wants to have Tupac perform with him on stage at Coachella

Movie Review: #Cars3 Fun, Exciting & Emotionally Endearing

Speed with heart Rama is back. #Cars3 is speed with heart. It’s fun, exciting and emotionally endearing. The first film was about a lost small town USA and the humbling of a cocky racer. The second movie didn’t quite know what it wanted to be, part espionage, part mistaken identity, part global tournament, all wrapped up in a poor attempt to address friendship. But this third installment is about the racer becoming the mentor while at the same time honoring the legacy of a very important person in McQueen’s life, Hudson Hornet, who’s voiced by the the late great actor whom we cinema deeply miss seeing on screen, Paul Newman. In “Cars 3,” Lightning McQueen suddenly finds himself blindsided by a new generation of blazing fast racers. He’s seeing himself and his fellow race mates forced to retirement. Refusing to be told when he should call it quit, McQueen is determined to get back in the game, acquiring the help of a new sponsor and a young trainer who’s secretly wanting to be

Movie Review: Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Tra-la-laaaa!!!! Rama is back. This is certainly “ Captain Underpants ” first movie, but does it live up to what the title suggests, ‘epic?’ Let’s just put it this way, the humor doesn’t land most of the time. It doesn’t do enough exaggeration, which usually can make kids laugh, kids who are clearly this movie’s target audience. It tries too hard to make their parents laugh instead. At least not until halfway through the end when the story busts out a weapon that can enlarge or shrink objects. But what it lacks in funny, “Captain Underpants” makes up for it in characters that entertain. Based on the worldwide sensation and best-selling book series, “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” voice stars Kevin Hart, Ed Helms and Thomas Middleditch and it’s about two pranksters/best friends, George and Harold, who hypnotize their mean principal into thinking he’s a dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants. I was never actually familiar with the book series, I’ve heard about

Movie Review: #PiratesOfTheCaribbean #DeadMenTellNoTales

Fun, like the first film Rama is back Well, at least you can follow what’s going on in #PiratesOfTheCaribbean #DeadMenTellNoTales as opposed to that sleep-inducing incoherent babble that was “ On Stranger Tides .” It seems that with this latest installment they’ve re-used the formula from the first movie “ Curse of the Black Pearl ” which I think is an effective strategy because Johnny Depp’s iconic character, Jack Sparrow, only works best when he’s not the lead but rather supports Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann, or in this latest case, Brenton Thwaites’ Henry Turner and Kaya Scodelario’s Carina Smyth OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he

Movie Review: #AlienCovenant Time to scream in space again!

Time to scream in space again! Rama delivers us another review. Finally, after the incredibly boring “ Prometheus ,” Ridley Scott gave us Alien Covenant which reminds us exactly why we sci-fi horror fans have always loved this franchise. This is not only a return to form, this movie will scare you to your core. Undeniably terrifying. Katherine Waterston ’s character Daniels may not be completely equal to Sigourney Weaver ’s iconic character Ripley but Daniels is badass in her own right. Scripted by John Logan and Dante Harper with story by Jack Paglen and Michael Green and directed by the man who helmed the first original “Alien” film, “Alien: Covenant” is essentially a sequel to “Prometheus.” You get to see what happens to Elizabeth Shaw and David, while at the same time there’s a crew of a colony ship arriving on a remote planet that they think is an uncharted paradise but the reality is far more sinister. They then must fight their way to escape the ever present threat. A c

Movie Review: #TheWallMovie The Film Is Gripping & Intense

An effective thriller Rama is back. The best way to describe “ The Wall ” is that it reminds us of 2002’s “ Phone Booth ” starring Colin Farrell and 2010’s “ Buried ” starring Ryan Reynolds . All of these movies are essentially stories of a predator toying with their food or prey. Our flawed protagonist pinned down while a highly skilled murderer speaks from the other end of the phone line messing with his head. It’s like a mind game between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling all over again. “ The Wall ” is gripping and intense. Directed by Doug Liman, “The Wall” stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and WWE star John Cena as two soldiers investigating the deaths of pipeline contractors when all of a sudden they become sitting targets of a lethally accurate sniper. Dwain Worrell wrote the script which made it to the black list (great unproduced screenplays) and I can understand why because Worrell pretty much has come up with a story that’s quite nail-biting. And the fact that the sni

Movie Review: #SnatchedMovie The Movie Will Make You Laugh out loud!

Laugh out loud! Rama is back. What’s awesome about the movie #Snatched is that it knows exactly you and I need at that given moment. Often times when watching a comedy movie, there’s a bit of a disconnect between what the characters on screen consider to be funny and whether or not we the audience think that that same thing is funny. But there’s no such problem here with “ Snatched ,” there’s vagina jokes, there’s racial jokes, there’s gender jokes, there’s sperm jokes. Its level of redonkulous is off the charts. One of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in theaters this year. “Snatched” is about a dreamer named Emily Middleton (Amy Schumer) whose life is stuck, her boyfriend has left her, she just got fired from her job and none of her friends can go with her to this vacation that she’s been desperately needing so she can forget about her crappy life. She convinces her ultra cautious playing-it-safe mother, Linda (Goldie Hawn) into joining her. But during this travel, they

Movie Review: #GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2

Family issues RAMA is back Here’s my review of #GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2 . So how does James Gunn top his 2014 success? By keeping his brand of humor intact. But while #GOTGVol2 is both fun and funny, it’s not quite as spectacular as its predecessor. I understand that one of any sequel’s most used formula to expand the story is by bringing in the characters’ family members, which is not a bad formula, but having too much of it could result in melodramatic and that is what this movie falls victim to. Written and directed by James Gunn, the story continues as this band of misfits traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos annihilating all kinds of creatures, from one planet to the next. Civilizations would acquire their help but of course their inability to resist mischief leads them to pocketing things on the side along the way and this causes tension. Let’s just say that the team is still having problems working together, they’re all just too stubborn and too proud. Until a certain

Movie Review: GIFTED "Kramer Vs. Kramer" meets "Terms of Endearment"

"Kramer Vs. Kramer" meets "Terms of Endearment" RAMA is back GIFTED is an emotional endearing film, which is interesting because I do see it like the perfect cross between “Kramer Vs. Kramer” and “Terms of Endearment.” It’s a film that is as adorable as it is heartfelt with great performances by all the actors involved including the ultimate scene-stealer, Fred the one-eyed cat. Chris Evans plays a single man, Frank, raising his super smart little niece, a child prodigy, Mary, (McKenna Grace) in Florida. They live a normal regular life but Mary clearly considers her current education level as something that’s beneath her skills. The seven year-old’s incredible mathematical ability reaches the attention of Frank’s mother, Evelyn (Lyndsay Duncan) who plans to take her granddaughter away from Frank so that she could send her to boarding school for intelligent students. This starts a custody battle that will ultimately determine which side really knows what’s

Movie Review: Born In China The Film Is Breathtaking

Breathtaking RAMA is back Disneynature has done it again. “ Born In China ” is an adorable, breathtaking adventure that goes straight for the heart. With stunning imagery and relatable stories that don’t shy away from the harsh truth of wildlife’s food chain, “Born In China” successfully informs, entertains, and inspires while blowing our minds at the same time. Narrated by John Krasinski, this latest docu takes you to some of the most inhospitable places in China where you get to follow three animal families struggling through each day and those intimate experiences are captured in high-def nature film. A panda bear guiding her baby as she learns her way to independence. A young monkey feeling displaced by his new baby sister but he ultimately learns what it means to be a big brother. And a mother snow leopard raising two cubs on her own as a single parent fighting off hostile neighbors. There’s actually a fourth animal or a fourth supporting character, if you will, the t

TV Review: #IronFist Hardcore enough to sit through

Hardcore enough to sit through Rama is back. Here’s my review of Marvel’s new Netflix series, “ Iron Fist ,” and since I didn’t grow up reading Roy Thomas and Gil Kane’s comic books, nor was I familiar with it, this review is more from the perspective of a fan who’s binge-watched all 13 episodes as opposed to making comparisons and trying to finding out whether or not the adaptation is faithful to the material. Let me just say that of all the shows that Marvel Television and Netflix have given us since this whole ambitious “Defenders” plan started, my favorite remains “Jessica Jones,” and although “Iron Fist” is not their best work, it’s still engaging and hardcore enough to sit through. Finn Jones plays Danny Rand, a man who for fifteen years has been presumed dead in a plane crash. His parents died in the crash, he ended up in a monastery where he received training. He returns to New York City to reclaim his birthright, to reconnect with his past. There he also meets Jessica
