The Hobbit Trilogy Has Cost $561 Million So Far

That figure includes the major 266 days of filming with actors, although it doesn't include an additional two months or so of "pick-up" shoots.

Making the movie trilogy The Hobbit has cost more than half a billion dollars so far, double the amount spent on the three movies in the The Lord of the Rings series.

That figure includes the major 266 days of filming with actors that was completed last year, although it doesn't include an additional two months or so of "pick-up" shoots done this year. There will likely also be additional postproduction costs as the next two movies are completed.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Trailer & New Images-

Through March 31, production had cost 676 million New Zealand dollars, or $561 million at current exchange rates, according to financial documents filed Friday in New Zealand, where the movies are being made.

Distributor Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson may consider it money well spent. To date, only the first movie in the latest trilogy has been released. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey took in just over $1 billion at the box office.

The documents, filed online by New Zealand's Companies Office, provide a rare insight into the exact costs of a blockbuster Hollywood production. Often studios release only rough estimates, if anything.
When making the trilogy, Warner Bros. created a wholly owned New Zealand company it named "3 Foot 7 Ltd," in reference to the diminutive stature of the movie's hobbits and dwarves. Company documents show that New Zealand taxpayers have so far contributed NZ$98 million to the trilogy through an incentive scheme designed to attract big-budget movies to the country. Such schemes are common among U.S. states and foreign countries that compete for movies.

The trilogy also appears to be one of the most expensive movie productions in which two or more movies are shot at the same time.

Both Box Office Mojo and Guinness World Records estimate the most expensive single movie ever made was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End with an estimated $300 million production tag. That movie, in conjunction with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest -- which was shot at the same time -- held the previous record for the most expensive total production, costing an estimated $450 million to $525 million.

According to Box Office Mojo, Jackson's previous trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, cost a total $281 million to make. The Star Wars prequel trilogy, meanwhile, cost $343 million, according to the website, which tracks movie costs and box-office receipts.

In making The Hobbit, New Zealand director Jackson chose to shoot both in 3D and at 48 frames per second, rather than the standard 24, in the hopes of giving audiences greater picture clarity and a more immersive experience. Both techniques added significant expense. The higher frames per second received mixed reviews, as did the movie itself, which starred Martin Freeman as the title character.

The trilogy is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novel of the same name and traces the adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he attempts to help a group of dwarves regain their wealth and stature from the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit is the precursor to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, which was made into a movie trilogy that was also directed by Jackson.

The second movie in the latest series, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is due out in December, while the final movie, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is due out in December 2014.
Warner Bros. representatives this week replied to e-mails sent by the Associated Press but did not immediately provide answers to a series of questions about the The Hobbit budget.

Halle Berry Heading To TV

Halle Berry is heading to the small screen.

The Oscar winner has been tapped to star in Steven Spielberg's CBS summer drama Extant and signed a two-year first-look production deal with the series' studio, CBS Television Studio.

The project found itself at the center of a heated bidding war between broadcast networks and cable networks, with CBS ultimately proving triumphant by committing to a 13-episode straight-to-series order. Extant has been billed as a futuristic thriller about a female astronaut (Berry) trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. The character's experiences lead to events that ultimately change the course of human history. The casting coup of Berry is as much a commentary on the strength of the spec script as it is on the state of the film business, particularly for actresses over 40.

"Halle is the type of award-winning actress you dream of collaborating with for an event project such as Extant," said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler. "Her talent and ability to immerse herself into every performance has created memorable roles that have resonated with audiences everywhere. It's a big coup for CBS to have Halle star in her first television series, especially with such an exciting original concept and a role layered with mystery and humanity."

Added Berry: "I'm always on the lookout for amazing roles, and when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity, it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium. For five months a year I'll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman. And for the remainder of the year, I'll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one. I've found amazing partners in CBS's Nina Tassler and Les Moonves, and the incredible Steven Spielberg, along with his Amblin production team, whose vision and creativity in storytelling is unparalleled."

Spielberg, along with Greg Walker and Mickey Fisher, who penned the script, will executive produce with Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. CBS Television Distribution will handle domestic distribution, while CBS Studios International will handle worldwide rights. Adam Rodin will co-exec produce. Said Spielberg: "There's only one Halle Berry, and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen Extant to expand her illustrious career. As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role, and I very much look forward to working with her."

The drama reteams CBS with Spielberg's Amblin, which also is behind this summer's top scripted drama Under the Dome. The network has already renewed Dome for a second season after the pricey series proved that there's a home for high-quality original scripted programming during the typically low-rated summer months. To make the latter feasible, CBS struck an early content licensing deal with Amazon, giving Amazon Prime members unlimited access to the serialized drama four days after it aired on the network broadcast.

To be sure, this isn't Berry's first foray into TV. Her small-screen roles have included HBO's Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, for which she earned an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award. She also earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Oprah Winfrey's Their Eyes Were Watching God.

METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER Review

METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER Review
By: RAMA

Thanks again to RAMA for coming through with this great review. Make sure to LIKE his Facebook page and follow him on Twitter.

Though I’m not too gung-ho about concert movies, I have seen a few in my lifetime and METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER is the best one thus far. It’s truly electrifying, even those who aren’t big fans of heavy metal of Metallica band in particular can appreciate how visionary this movie is by director Nimrod Antal. I don’t blame those who may consider the post apocalyptic companion plot featuring Dane DeHaan as a bit weird and relenting, but every ghoulish imagery and illustration in this film capture the essence of what Metallica’s music represents, so it’s no surprise to me that funerals, and electric chairs, and master of puppet come to life in a form of stage theatrics and spectacles in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER.

METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER stars Metallica, one of the most popular, influential rock bands in history. In this music driven, 3D motion picture event, award-winning filmmaker Nimród Antal immerses audiences in a bracing, raw and visceral cinematic experience with spectacular live performance footage of Metallica’s most iconic songs — created exclusively for film — combined with a bold, narrative story featuring imagery drawn from the band’s trailblazing iconography. Dane DeHaan portrays Trip, a young roadie sent on an urgent mission, during the Metallica’s roaring live set in front of a sold-out arena. The film features dazzling pyrotechnics, the most elaborate live-performance stage ever built and state-of-the-art 3-D photography, captured using up to 24 cameras simultaneously.

It’s funny how Dane DeHaan reminds me a lot of younger Leonardo DiCaprio, they both have those intense stare, an expression like a young man who has seen some sh*t and is trying to process it. DeHaan is a young talent that I think is a new force to be reckoned with, granted that talent is not used to full potential in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER because all Dane has to do is run from one point of the street to another without getting caught in a mass street riot and without getting his head hanged by some apocalyptic horseman. I think director Nimrod Antal just wanted to convey his version of anarchy, his version of an uprising and the way he transition back and forth from that to Metalica’s concert is done in such a manner that makes you wonder if Metallica is singing about what Dane is going through.

Now, I didn’t grow up a huge Metallica fan, I did listen to a few of their songs and my favorite of theirs would have to be the song “Fuel” so when that song was played in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER, I was rockin’!

Even if you think that the apocalyptic plot doesn’t make sense, I think you can appreciate the stage theatrics, whoever the stage manager is, he’s bloody brilliant, I’ve never attended a concert that elaborate, the whole thing has sequences that run like some kind of show in Vegas. They even construct a full blown statue, they have a giant electric chair and they even perform a faux accident, I’ve never seen a concert done like that before. Great 3D work too, with impressive camera work, definitely the best use of 3D that concert movie has ever done!

I may not be a huge METALLICA fans but in my book, but I’d have to admit that Lars is one of the best drummers and Kirk is one of the best guitars in the history of music and in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER, you get an up close VIP seat look at those two brilliant talents showcasing all they’ve got. The band got their fans riled up and entertained. 90 minutes of head-banging epicness. Metallica is the best at what they do.

Runner Runner Review. Here Is Why You Should Just Keep Running

Runner Runner  Review
By: MattInRC

Here'e why the Ben Affleck thriller Runner Runner should just keep running.

In Runner Runner, Princeton grad student Richie (Justin Timberlake) has turned a profitable online gambling career into a disaster, losing his life savings during an online swindle. He flies to Costa Rica filled with data from his tech pals at the university to find the site's owner Ivan Block (Ben Affleck), who not only refunds his money, but offers him a job. Soon, Richie is living the high life, analyzing gambling data and wooing clients. But Block's business is a dangerous one, filled with payoffs to a creepy gambling and murder; Richie soon learns that he's part of an elaborate sting operation by the FBI, led by Pain and Gain's Anthony Mackie, who will break any rule to nab Block. As Richie learns that Block plans to pin him for the company's missing profits, he must decide if Block's assistant (Gemma Arterton) is dirty as well, and whether he will cooperate with the FBI or run himself.

There's many things that bring Runner Runner down. Timberlake simply isn't strong enough here - nor is he ever in dramatic roles - to keep our attention or lead a scene. Once the very good Affleck disappears to create chaos elsewhere, Timberlake's mousy performance simply falls flat. He never seems comfortable, either with his lines or in the presence of his fellow actors. It's a problem that I've talked about before, from In Time to Trouble with the Curve, and it's becoming a trend. Although given multiple chances to prove himself, Timberlake just doesn't have the dramatic chops. On the other hand, Affleck plays jerk extremely well, quoting Napoleon and wishing he was back in the US enjoying a walk. Before he turns predictably villain, we actually feel for situation, on the run and never able to return to The States. He's the only reason why Runner doesn't fall flat on its face. Aterton is not really a factor here, except to look good in tight dresses and sound amazing (gotta love British accents). I wonder if the story would have been stronger with her at the lead instead of JT - an actor of her caliber would have made for a much better performance.

But casting isn't the only problem here. There's no twists in the script by Writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien, nothing to compel us to like Timberlake or hate Affleck, and certainly little to keep our attention. This is not a failed editing job or some other post-production nightmare, although Director Bad Fuhrman doesn't get the best out of his actors and misuses nods to Casino and even The Social Network. Not even production assistance from Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't help here - perhaps he was attached at one point to starring in Runner? As we're steered headlong into a somewhat predictable ending, we're no better off for knowing these characters, having gained no new insights into their personalities, and wondering how this will play with paying audiences who get no nudity but a surprising R rating.

As we discussed in our review of Liam Hemsworth's Paranoia, Runner Runner is a good example of why casting is absolutely essential to the success of a film. Timberlake is utterly forgettable here, with Aterton showing up almost as often as the scantily-clad hookers that the Costa Rican police seem to constantly surround themselves with. It's certainly not the worst film of 2013, but perhaps one of its most boring. Save this one to your Rainy Day queue, but set your theater sights higher. This one doesn't deserve your time. Runner Runner is rated R for language and some sexual content and has a runtime of 91 minutes.

Guillermo Del Toro's Horror-Filled Simpsons Opening

Gone are the days when you had to wait until something hit screens to see it. Take, for example, the opening credits to this year’s Treehouse Of Horror episode on The Simpsons. Not content to simply lend his voice or craft a couch gag, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro has been given free rein to re-imagine the entire opening credits sequence. Cue the horror!

Lurking within the nifty new sequence are references to del Toro’s own output (including Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy) and a load of nods to his favorite horror movies, icons and moments.

“The Simpsons titles are so iconic and yet they’ve never been riffed in this vein. I really wanted to land the connections between the show’s set pieces and the titles and some of the most iconic horror movies, and intersperse them with some of my stuff in there for pure joy,” he tells EW.

“For example the idea that Ms. Krabappel could be outside the school with Alfred Hitchcock, which is a reference to the sequence in The Birds that happens outside of the school in Bodega Bay. To use Chief Wiggum as the Cyclops from Harryhausen, dipping the Lard Lad donut in a water tank, to have the nuclear spill from Mr. Burns’ plant create zombies – all of this stuff seems to make sense to interconnect.

"If Homer really gets a radioactive isotope, he could turn into a reaper from Blade. Or the famous shot that is always in the titles – Maggie driving and then you pull back and there’s Marge driving, right? But in this case Maggie is driving, and she’s driving the car from the horror movie from the 70s called The Car, which is one of my favourite guilty pleasure B-movies. And what if Lisa is in the music class, but she’s in the music class with every Phantom Of The Opera ever made? It was a unique opportunity.”

Apparently, del Toro had plans for even more, but was limited by the credits’ running time. Still, what he achieved was something special. For more from the director on the sequence, head to EW. The episode airs in the US on Sunday evening, and should arrive on Sky 1 at some point in the future, though there’s no exact date yet.

Could Saoirse Ronan Star In Star Wars Episode VII?

Saoirse Ronan was utterly charming in her Empire Podcast interview this week, talking about her latest, How I Live Now, as well as her love of Bridesmaids, how to pronounce her name and a little movie called Star Wars Episode VII, which she recently revealed she'd auditioned for.

Below is what she had to say about the experience of going in for J.J. Abrams and co., which may be a touch on the vague side, but does contain a little teasing titbit about lightsabers for any die-hard Star Wars fans to enjoy.

“Yeah, I did [audition for Star Wars Episode VII]… I don’t know whether I should have said that now! I mean, everyone did. Everyone has auditioned for it. So many people I know have gone in for the part I’ve gone in for, and guys who’ve gone in for a particular part, so I’d imagine J.J. is probably just scanning the earth to find the people that ne needs.”

“But nobody has a clue what it’s about, and nobody’s read the script. So I’ve gone in and read for it, but I have to say, I think it’s the only time I’ve ever thought, ‘You know what? Even if I don’t get it, I had so much fun auditioning, pretending to take out a lightsaber – out of a bag, kind of inspect it and not know what it is. That was… that was great. A lightsaber! Star Wars!”

24: Live Another Day To Be Set In The U.K.

24: Live Another Day,” the limited series followup to Fox’s hit Kiefer Sutherland starrer, will lens across the Pond, the network announced. “Live Another Day” marks the first production of the franchise to shoot abroad since the 2008 TV movie “24: Redemption,” which was filmed outside Cape Town, South Africa.

When fans of the Emmy-winning skein last saw Sutherland’s iconic counter terrorism agent Jack Bauer, he was a fugitive from justice. The limited event series, slated for a summer debut, picks up four years later in the franchise, with Bauer on the fly in the U.K.

Fox announced the return of the Jack Bauer franchise as a 12-seg limited series during the network’s upfront in May. Series will take place over 12 hours, instead of “24′s” original daylong format. Fox chief Kevin Reilly sees potential for further iterations of the “24″ franchise, should the limited series perform well on the net next year.

“24″ concluded its initial series run on Fox in 2010 after eight seasons.

The limited series joins a stable of event programs in Fox’s 2014 arsenal, including “Broadchurch” and “Wayward Pines.”

London has played host to a number of American TV productions as of late, with “Elementary,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Bones” among the series that have ventured across the Atlantic.

Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox Television are producing “24: Live Another Day” with Howard Gordon’s shingle, Teakwood Lane Productions. Gordon, Sutherland and Brian Grazer will exec produce, with an additional team still to be announced.

Gravity Review. The Film Is An Absolute Thrillride

Gravity Review
By: MattInRC

The gripping Gravity proves space is the final and most dangerous frontier.

 WARNING: major spoilers ahead.

The beauty and thrill of discovery involved in space travel is matched only by its inherent potential for dramatic loss of life, as evidenced by the tragedies of Challenger and Columbia. Director Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity takes us through just such a disaster, creating both a thrilling and cautionary tale that will either inspire or make you nervous each time you fly.

Astronauts Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) are busy space-walking around the Space Shuttle Explorer when the ship is struck and destroyed by a dead Russian spy satellite. Their only hope is to make it to the International Space Station, which Stone finds has been abandoned, with its only functioning escape craft damaged. As secrets are revealed about the duo, one must make the ultimate sacrifice so that the other may live, paving the way for a gripping end to what was supposed to be a nice walk around Planet Earth.

This is a two-person show, with Clooney and Bullock as the only actors, minus the voice of Mission Control, played by The Right Stuff's Ed Harris. They survive each debris storm, which seems to grow in intensity and size, while constantly running out of oxygen or dealing with fires in space. It would have been less effective had Gravity been told from Clooney's perspective, or had the hero been a man. That's not to say women are less likely to survive a space disaster of this scale, but the perceived frailty of women and instinctual survival are played up here, resulting in either modest failure or total success. It's merely by luck that Bullock emerges as the lone survivor, but what of her life afterwards? Clooney has more incentive to return home - to the life of a bar-hopping astronaut - than Bullock, whose loss of her daughter years before has left her with nothing but quiet car drives after work. That's not something to look forward to, especially since Cuarón makes such a big deal of this perceived dysfunction once the action ramps up. Gravity is less about the future than surviving the present, with our heroine reacting to circumstances and less about how those change her. Once she's home, it's back to that quiet car ride. Lame.

Clooney is the master of the understated performance, with his dry veneer and aging good looks guaranteed to keep women focused until his untimely departure. By then, we've already focused onto Bullock, whose realitstic portrayal lends incredible reality to the role. A lot has been made about their public relationship, and whether Clooney influenced the selection process; regardless, she turns in an amazing performance that could see her nab an Oscar nomination. But this is Cuarón's baby, and he delivers it with amazing vision and excellent camerawork by Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. Both seem to understand the backdrop of space as both amazingly dangerous and yet filled with incredible beauty and untapped power. Man is merely a grain of sand in that great vacuum, and Cuarón - who co-wrote this with his brother Jonás - adds the right mix of human drama and space-scale epic to the screen. The result may convince you to either become an astronaut, or swear never to fly again.

Some people classify 'good film' as something you can watch more than once, because you always find a new angle or background action you missed the first time. Gravity is hard to place into this neat box, because its novelty wears off once the credits start rolling. That doesn't mean you shouldn't see it. but you might be dissuaded from purchasing it on Blu-ray once it becomes available. Nevertheless, Gravity proves that space is both the final and most dangerous frontier man will ever face. Bullock re-assumes her position as a top-tier veteran, while Clooney continues to prove that his appearance in a film - whether short or long - makes everything he touches that much better. If you have issues with vertigo, I'd discourage you from seeing it in IMAX, based on our feelings of vertigo at a 3D standard theater. Either way, it's a film you'll only want to watch once - make the most of it. Gravity is rated PG-13 for language, creepy country music in space, and has a runtime of 90 minutes.
