Movie Review: #ThePurgeElectionYear

The Purge Election Year feasts on the flesh of a bloody good political thriller.

As the nation once again prepares for Purge Night, its “New Founding Fathers of America” are not a happy bunch: there is growing concern that the one-night-a-year bloodfest has been targeting the poor in an effort to keep the costs of welfare and other programs down. Moreover, a new challenge has arisen in the form of Purge survivor Sen. Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), who leads a group demanding an end to the event. Desiring to see her growing influence eliminated, the NFFA institutes a new rule: all citizens (including government officials) are now able to be hunted on Purge Night. As dark forces conspire against her, Roan has an ace up her sleeve: her bodyguard/head of security Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), who has relocated from Los Angeles after surviving two years prior. Together with a collection of anti-Purge patriots, Leo and Charlie battle the NFFA and Purge-happy residents to secure permanent change for the nation. The Purge Anarchy was a decided improvement over Director James DeMonaco's 2013 release, serving as merely hunter/hunted fare. Anarchy legitimized the series with Grillo and his backstory, elevating it into franchise no-brainer territory. But while Election Year has many of those same elements of unbridled gore, the film stands as more of a political thriller than a screamer hack-saw, a fact which might take audiences off guard. This is no longer about the specific ways people torture or hunt each other, but a familiar message about the political fracturing that's occurring in our real world. Roan clearly takes the side of Democrat, her views in direct opposition with the NFFA's rather radical Republican tendencies. The result mostly works, although some will leave wondering where their real Purge has gone. Grillo is still very effective, but his role is limited to defender/protector: we see flashes of the tormented Leo from Anarchy, but he's now a clearly different - and I'd say better - person. But this is no longer about him: The Purge Election Year works mostly because of Mitchell, who survived a Purge from 18 years ago, wants to see America returned to a sense of normalcy. But she's more than the do-gooder: she's matured into a leader that smells corruption at the center of the murderous night, which makes her fiercely likeable. She and Grillo have immediate chemistry, a familiarity that feels like it goes back years. It never runs aground or gets stale, which helps to prop up other issues from which the film suffers. The Purge Election Year has always been B-movie thriller, content to exist in an alternate world where ultra-violence is the name of the game. That sort of wanton destruction immediately appealed to the audience, but this new script by DeMonaco falls into a predictable pattern. We know Charlie will face several assassination attempts - including the moderately effective climax - and that Leo and his new-found friends will somehow win the day. That forces it into a tightly-confined pattern of cat-mouse, but again it's the performances that keep us going. There is just enough character development by Leo's 'crew' - including Joe Dixon (Mykelti Williamson) as a shop owner, his loyal immigrant employee Marcos (Joseph Julian Soria), and friend Laney (Betty Gabriel) - to empathize with their reasons not to purge without getting on a soapbox to convince us. They too are very likeable and play an effective and devastating team. But anyone looking for either incredible violence or superior storytelling will need to look elsewhere: those are just not in Election Year's DNA. DeMonaco knows what he has here, and makes the most out of a concept that could have lost steam by now. And while the ending suggests we have one more film to look forward to, I'd pay to see more, particularly if Mitchell and Grillo return. The Purge Election Year might not wow you with the incredible cycles of violence that made the previous films so rewarding, but it's better for seeking a balance as the franchise itself feels like it's maturing right in front of us. The comparisons to our current political fracturing are almost too spot on, reminding us that good film can serve as mirror into our society and a warning about class conflict in a time where our own values are undergoing radical redesign. Movie Review: #TheLegendOfTarzan

Led by an all-star cast, The Legend of Tarzan doesn't bore, but doesn't move us either.

If the 2016 box office has proven anything, it's that American audiences are becoming more choosy in what they watch. We've seen that message quickly emerge as one sub-par film after another has fallen to poor turnout and negative reactions by critics. And while The Legend of Tarzan hopes to reverse that trend - and it's better than most of what we've seen this season - it still rings a bit hollow. A retelling of the classic novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, we are introduced to the British gentlemen Lord Greystoke (Alexander Skarsgard), who struggles to maintain his sense of self in 19th Century England, all while events unfold in his native land that will draw him back to Africa. Central to this is the politics of colonization, with the Belgium king Leopold staking his claim over the continent. But he'll need help, and therefore enlists the nasty Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz) to broker a deal with the local tribes. The terms are simple: lure Tarzan back to Africa so that a tribal chief (Djimon Hounsou) can carry out his lifelong grudge against him, and receive a huge gift of diamonds to help finance Leopold's mercenary army. But Tarzan isn't about to comply, even at the behest of the American envoy George Washington Williams (Samuel L. Jackson), who wants to know Leopold's real plan. Eventually drawn home, Tarzan and his wife Jane (Margo Robbie) embark on a journey of adventure, unaware of Rom's plans but knowing that their true home might lie in the jungles far away from the brick/mortar structures of 'civilized' England.
The Legend of Tarzan starts off quite well, with an opening sequence designed to show both the struggle of 'civilized' man vs tribal Africans and how Tarzan fits into this 19th Century universe. We're brought up to speed on Tarzan and Jane's origins , as well as the new world order that saw Africa divvied up between the nations of Europe. But it quickly descends into a lecture on British society, politics, and economics, while our stars don era costumes without really knowing how to act in them. That's probably a blame to assign to Director David Yates, who's best known for helming the last four (and probably the best) Harry Potter films. Fortunately, after that set up concludes and the real story begins - that of Tarzan returning home to battle a tribal chief and the British Rom - the film finds its feet, and it seems like Yates finally figures out what his film will be. This will be a struggle of people and their ideals, led by the powerful Tarzan and his band of merry men. It's what made the Edgar Rice Burroughs adventure so tantalizing when it was first published; and while it's a message I eventually got behind, I would have preferred to have buyed-in earlier. I wouldn't say that Skarsgard is the wrong person to play Tarzan, as he certainly fills the role with his ripped physique, but he doesn't exactly imbue the classic character with anything new. For most of that first act, Skarsgard plods and meanders on screen, a lifeless and (honestly) hard to understand Brit who wishes he was far away from Greystoke. And even when he arrives to battle Rom, Skarsgard doesn't deliver a passionate performance. Jackson too serves up a by-the-numbers portrayal that's really no different than his defining work in Pulp Fiction. And yet several of his one-liners and inability to keep up with Tarzan's nearly film-length running does break up the serious tone of The Legend of Tarzan. Waltz also suffers from a bit of typecasting, as the 19th Century Blofeld from SPECTRE, although we do eventually learn why he desires power so badly. It's a near last-gasp effort to legitimize his character, but it's also an example of what two minutes in a script can give you, provided you're willing to take that gamble.
The Legend of Tarzan doesn't feature a lot of these gambles, as Yates and company produce a fairly standard jungle film, perhaps in the hopes of turning it into a franchise. The one performance that makes the strongest case for a possible continuation is Robbie's Jane. She's clearly the most intelligent, progressive, and well-spoken of the lot, and her rugged independence just shows how quickly Hollywood has grown in the portrayal of women. Jane needs to be rescued, not because she can't fend for herself, but because she's Tarzan's wife. Had the roles been reversed, I think Jane would have succeeded because of the way Robbie's imbues her with a sense of authenticity. That's a distinction no other Tarzan movie - not even the animated one - has been able to achieve, and it's the one thing which saves The Legend of Tarzan from becoming boring and even tedious. The CGI here is pretty good, with motion-captured animals dominating most of the story, in many ways outdoing the performances of our leads. This seems to be something Yates gets from the beginning, as that opening sequence effectively shows the power of both the African tribes and the animals which try to exist alongside them. The Legend of Tarzan suffers when Tarzan himself swings from those vines, as Yates The Legend of Tarzan doesn't spend enough time getting us excited about his alternate means of transport. The figures either look completely CGI-ed or fail to inspire that sense of action and exploration that should make The Legend of Tarzan a grander adventure. But that's not to say things don't become epic, and the film does eventually win us over with its inspired message about the wilderness and our absolute necessity in preserving it. That's perhaps its greatest strength and the one thing that separates it from a movie season of uninspired, predictable tripe.
After a strong opening and then a weak first act, The Legend of Tarzan finally morphs into an enjoyable summer movie. Robbie is perhaps the most inspired of the cast, while Skarsgard and Jackson play out their roles without ever defining them for this generation. No one will walk out of this saying, "That is the Tarzan/Rom/Williams I've been waiting for!" which I suppose is a message one could say about most of this year's summer movie season. In a time when expectations are at an all-time high and the stock seemingly at an ebb, it will be interesting to see if audiences can support two jungle-based stories in the same year. The Legend of Tarzan is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, some sensuality and brief rude dialogue and has a runtime of 110 minutes. Documentary Review: Roseanne for President!

The content of this documentary was almost embarrassing and overly frustrating listening to her antics and her far far far left babble.

Four short years ago, comedienne and longtime feminist, Roseanne Barr ran to be President of the United States of America in the 2012 election. This gritty and raw documentary follows Roseanne from the idea’s conception to the bitter end of defeat. Throughout the film a different side of Roseanne emerges and a realistic view of how an “Average Joe” would go about attempting to run for office.



From the very beginning Roseanne is unapologetically honest about her true intentions of running for President, however you cannot help but notice something is much different from before. You see a real elderly woman fed up with modern day mudslinging politics and would rather try to handle it all herself then see another rich politician take office and continue running the country into the ground. The film outlines how Roseanne came to the idea of running for President, how she got into comedy and all of the positive changes she made during her reign as Queen of Prime-Time Comedy up to her departure from main stream media.

Admittedly while growing up I admired Roseanne for her blunt honesty and brash words. Her no holds bar approach at humor and never saying she is sorry is what every funny feminist girl aspires to be. But, in this film you don’t see the old Roseanne, or the Roseanne you think you know. Instead the viewers get a bitter, pot-smoking, wine slugging, old broad that reminds you of the ladies that sit on their porch and yell at passerby’s about the good old days.


The content of this documentary was almost embarrassing and overly frustrating listening to her antics and her far far far left babble. Her comments and facts sounded as if they came straight out of a tabloid magazine and held no true weight. Beside the infuriating political content and Roseanne’s incessant nagging, the film itself was severely low budget. There couldn’t have been more than one or two camera crew members and was probably shot on a series of iPhones or digital cameras. There was hardly any shot framing or decent transitions. Watching the film felt like it was more than likely Roseanne’s own pet project and not meant for major consumption, but how this film will survive is beyond me. Granted the interview segments with other celebrities and family commentary was more professional and well put together than the segments of Roseanne or her campaign manager alone.
This film is certainly not for everyone as most people tend to either love Roseanne or hate her and sadly this documentary does not paint her in a great light. Although, she did do amazing things in the 90s her time has finally come and she should just stay out of the limelight and think twice about wanting to run for Presidency again during this election. Hopefully she has learned her lesson and this film will quietly fizzle out during its limited theater release. Skip this documentary if you like Roseanne even in the slightest so you can keep your good memories of her fresh instead of seeing her in this film way past her prime.

#MarvelCollectorCorps Review: June 2016

It's a month of Marvel Movie Ass Whoopin', as Marvel Collector Corps delivers another exceptional sub box.

With Loot Crate long gone and our desire to keep Geek Fuel ebbing, we really can't say the same for Funko's run of DC, Smuggler's Bounty, and of course Marvel Collector Corps. This month's WOMEN OF POWER theme does nothing less than hit it out of the park, pushing us further away from the monthly model.

The Promise

Before we begin, let's look at the deal again: promising a value of $50, the box would keep the "fluff" (their words) to a minimum with Funko partnering each time to deliver an exclusive figure. Joining at the Founders level would get you an 8" exclusive figure on your one-year anniversary, but you can also subscribe at the Collector level at $25 with $6.95 shipping.

With Year One Founders receiving a Captain America statue, it's clear that a long-term commitment to MCC might be the best play you can make in this market.

The Delivery
We use QUALITY and TIMING to base our reviews, so let's see how this box stands up. As always, we'll end our review with some additional thoughts after the unboxing:


The Guts
From the excellent t-shirt of Spider-Gwen to the Bobbleheads and the exclusive Funko of Squirrel Girl, everything about June's box oozes geeky quality. The shirt is soft and looks like a better fit than some previous months when the tag read 'XL' but didn't quite fit that loose. I really have to mention the pin/patch set, which features a relatively unknown hero in Kamala Khan. Her uniform reminds me of previous versions of Captain Marvel, and it's frankly a ballsy move to feature her and not a more recognizable female. Speaking of which, I was surprised to see no Black Widow in any of these images; she's relegated to the inner box art, as is Medusa. But the message is clear: Marvel wants to expand its brand, and highlighting lesser-known female heroes is one way to do that. The best part of this box could almost be viewed as an after-thought: it encourages us to explore the various women of Marvel in a way that I hadn't really considered. Marvel knows that it commands this market, but it never seems to rest on its lalrels. We could have been happy with a Black Widow/Ms. Marvel box, but to see them stretch their wings means the world can now learn about Valkyrie, She-Hulk, and of course Spider-woman. That's an important play for Marvel's future and a big WIN in my book.

The Shirt
We won't spend too long on the shirt, but if you notice the art card, there were at least three different concept shirts that were considered before settling on Gwen. I love the cereal box concept for Ms. Marvel ad hope that one shows up one day on Day of the Shirt. WIN.

The Comic
To remind us about their recent Civil War II run, MCC produced an exclusive variant featuring Funko versions of Valkyrie, Elektra, Mr. Marvel, Captain Marvel, and Spider-woman. Interesting that they gave us both versions of Earth's Mightiest Hero, but it's still a WIN.

Bobbleheads
After researching these (as I don't open anything but the shirts), MCC did a nice job with the Bobbleheads. I like the sculpts and the paint is solid as well. WIN.

Interesting Choice from Funko? Not So Much!
There's been a lot written about Squirrel Girl lately, with some claiming that she's the best Marvel character in comics right now. Although she was meant for a one-off in a 1991 Iron Man team-up comic, but she's become quite the center of attention. With her arrival as this month's exclusive Funko figure, we see just how the girl who talks to squirrels has finally made it to the big time. The sculpt and colors are great, and represent MCC's first poll result involving fan input. Yes, Squirrel Girl is a fan choice, so congrats for getting the figure that most of you seem to have wanted. WIN WIN WIN.

The Bottom Line
Marvel Collector Corps' June WOMEN OF POWER theme is excellent, perhaps one of the best ever made. It's filled with a rich. diverse collection of high-quality swag, with the shirt, comic, and Funko figs, and pin/patch all working their way into our hearts. That pin/patch shadow box is coming along nicely thank you, but it's clear we'll need a bigger box. MCC's simple plan to deliver high-quality items that fans want is pushig lesser boxes aside, and making me doubt my investment in Geek Fuel. Don't worry Star Wars' Smuggler's Bounty and DC's Legion of Collectors: you're ok with me, so long as you continue to kick ass like MCC. This box and series comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

#GeekFuel Review: June 2016

Does Geek Fuel's June release fulfill your love of geek? Read on to find out!

After May's very good (but not great) Explorers theme - sporting great Nathan Drake and Westeros gear but a lame GF pint glass, we expected June to finally be the month in which the company achieved a rightful place at the sub box subsctiption table. Unfortunately, a hodge-podge of selections pushes GF right out of legitimacy once again.

Before diving in, let's review the details:
  • The cost for a Month to Month is $17.90, $16.90/month for a 3-month subscription, $15.90/month for a 6-month tour and just $13.90/month for a one-year subscription.
  • Shipping $6.00 to the US, Canada, and at least a few other countries.

  • We use QUALITY and TIMING to base our reviews, so let's see how this box stands up. As always, we'll end our review with some additional thoughts after the unboxing:

    Winners
    As you can see, June offers very little in the way of true quality; but there are some bright spots worth mentioning. First, the shirt offers excellent quality and design, with one of those TFury-esque themes from Pokemon. It's nice but not my thing. The one item I will probably keep is the Sherlock Manga, which arrived bagged and boarded. The Steam game looks interesting, if I were into gaming, a fact that I'm sure some players really enjoy. That is one good thing about Geek's monthly offerings, as gamers get a new game each box. Again, that's not me, but it's why I've added it here.

    Losers
    Sadly there's lots to lament here. Most of these items are no better than Hot Topic/Spencer's offerings, regardless if they advertise themselves as 'exclusive.' There is noting interesting about a Donkey Kong stamp, a Super 1-Up plant, or a Turtle stress ball. Perhaps these boxes are made for much younger people, as I think they would be really interested in the cheaper contents. But most kids wouldn't be interested in May's offerings, which were clearly more adult in nature. Another month, and here I am looking to clear out my stock.

    The Bottom Line
    June's Geek Fuel delivers a merely decent collection of geeky goodness. My hope that GF was ready to sit at the big boy table is diminished once again, as the collection feels more like someone raided Hot Topic for last minute filler items. GF needs to up its game soon, before other selections (Star Wars, Marvel, DC) finally put them down. I've never been closer to cancelling my subscription as I am today. One more disappointing box before my October due date and I'll take my money elsewhere.
