Drafthouse Films Nabs Rights CANNON FILMS Documentary

Who as a kid in the 80's didn't watch or love a movie brought to us by CANNON FILMS? One of my beloved and favorite movies of all time is BREAKIN' and who didn't sit around the house and jump off the couch after seeing AMERICAN NINJA? Or after seeing Van Damme in KICKBOXER go outside and try to kick the shit out of a tree?

We got some interesting news today that caught my eye and I thought I would share it will all of you.

Drafthouse Films has bought the U.S> rights to ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS.

DRAFTHOUSE FILMS ACQUIRES US RIGHTS TO “ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS”

New Doc Will Chronicle Infamous ’80s Exploitation Production Outfit

From Acclaimed Director Mark Hartley

AUSTIN, TX – Thursday, December 1, 2011 – Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of the world-famous Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announced today the acquisition of all US rights to ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS from world-wide sales agent Celluloid Nightmares. From acclaimed cult film documentarian Mark Hartley (NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD, MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED), the film centers on the story of two Israeli-born, movie-obsessed cousins, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, who in pursuit of the “American dream” launched an indie studio that would produce over 120 exploitation films from 1979-1989 turning a renegade outfit into the proclaimed “seventh Hollywood major.” The film is currently in pre-production in Australia with Producer Veronica Fury and Executive Producers XYZ Films (upcoming Sony Pictures release THE RAID). A theatrical release is being planned for late 2012 to coincide with a traveling roadshow retrospective of Cannon’s seminal films.

While best known for their explosive ’80s action fare (MISSING IN ACTION, DEATH WISH sequels, Academy Award® Nominated RUNAWAY TRAIN), Cannon Films’ diverse and ambitious production output also included body-count slashers (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2), musicals and comedies (THE APPLE, BREAKIN’), science fiction and fantasy epics (MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, LIFEFORCE), martial arts classics (AMERICAN NINJA series, KICKBOXER), neo-noir crime thrillers (52 PICK-UP, 10 TO MIDNIGHT), art-house dramas (BARFLY, John Cassavetes’ LOVE STREAMS, Jean-Luc Godard’s KING LEAR), in addition to launching the careers of many future genre superstars like Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. “No other production organization in the world today,” proclaimed Roger Ebert in 1987, “has taken more chances with serious, marginal films than Cannon.”

“Cannon Films was an enterprise that in many ways defined exploitation cinema of the 1980s,” said Alamo Drafthouse Founder/CEO and Fantastic Fest Founder Tim League, “We are thrilled to share their untold legacy with movie fans around the country.” Drafthouse Films Director Evan Husney elaborated, “With director Mark Hartley at the helm, ELECTRIC BOOGALOO is sure to be a wildly entertaining, comprehensive and frenetic no-holds-barred dive into the world of perhaps the most infamous production company in film history.”

“I was lucky enough to have my first feature NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD screen at Fantastic Fest in 2008 – and ever since then the chance to revisit the festival and the Alamo Drafthouse has been one of the principal motivations for me to get out of bed and make more movies!” says director Mark Hartley. “The news that Drafthouse Films has joined the ELECTRIC BOOGALOO party is beyond awesome. I know that Tim League and his team will find the most inventive, outrageous and ridiculously entertaining ways to roll the film out across America – and personally I can’t wait for the show to begin.”

The deal was negotiated by Nate Bolotin, on behalf of Celluloid Nightmares and XYZ Films and Tim League, Founder and CEO of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, James Emanuel Shapiro, Chief Operating Officer and Evan Husney, Director of Acquisitions, on behalf of Drafthouse Films.

VH1 To Deliver A TLC Biopics

VH1 is the latest basic cable network to get into the TV movie business this year, following similar forays by TNT, CMT, BET and, to some extent, USA Network. VH1 is planning a series of biopics about musicians and pop culture icons. First off is a movie about the 1990s R&B/hip-hop/pop trio TLC.

The two surviving members of the group, Chilli and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, will serve as consultants and executive produce with Bill Diggins and Maggie Malina. Kate Lanier (What’s Love Got To Do With It) has signed on to write the movie. VH1 ventured into scripted programming earlier this year with the series Single Ladies, which was kicked off by a two-hour movie.

SHAME Movie Review By: RAMA

SHAME Movie Review
By: RAMA

Was RAMA addicted to the movie? Please make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

Shocking, unexpected, raw, explosive, would be some of the first things that come to mind. I for one did not expect director Steve McQueen and actors Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan would push the envelope that much but they did and they did it so well. Never have I seen the subjects of obsession and addiction depicted on screen in such a brutally honest manner. Fassbender’s going the distance for his character is evidence of his extraordinary skills as an actor.

Just like Requiem For A Dream was more or less a full feature anti drug public service announcement, SHAME too shows you how sex addiction can be a danger to self and those around you..

Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon’s insular life spirals out of control.

The lead character Brandon, played by Michael Fassbender, is fascinating to me because here is a man who has everything, a very comfortable lifestyle, a well-paying job, a glamorous nightlife, in a city that never sleeps, he has no problem blending in and yet he struggles with making real human connection, something more meaningful.

The film, using New York city as its setting, wants to invite you to see how disconnected we can be despite our everyday interaction. That despite our best efforts, sometimes we’re so afraid to get hurt again, we’d settle for anything that numb the pain away.

The film doesn’t let you in completely on what it is that may have troubled Brandon, perhaps he came from a home that caused this great hole in his heart that he constantly has to fill with sex, which is why I used Requiem For A Dream as comparison because even though sex addiction may not be as openly or as comfortably discussed as drug addiction, it too can be self-destructive, SHAME essentially shows you a downward spiral of a man as Brandon’s addiction gets worse and worse and worse.

When Sissy, played by Carey Mulligan, comes along, suddenly Brandon’s routine gets interrupted. Sissy deals with issues of abandonment. Right from when she’s introduced, the film shows you this needy woman disguised in a strong independent personality.

Once again, the film doesn’t let you in on what happened in their past, but there seems to be an abandonment somewhere because Sissy feels Brandon tries to push her away, just like everyone in her life has done in the past. Perhaps in their childhood, Brandon left her when she needed him the most.

And Brandon has been living carefree all this time that when Sissy drops in uninvited and then makes herself at home, the notion of this entire responsibility comes across as nothing but a burden for Brandon. He sees that as more of a problem than his sex addiction is, which causes him to drown even deeper. Brandon turns to sex to stay away from the emotional connection that his sister so clearly desperately longs for.

SHAME is a character driven story that’s mostly told in the silence. Often times director McQueen focuses mostly on Fassbender’s tremendous on screen presence to take us through the journey into his troubled soul. I don’t know if I’d call the sex scenes hard to watch, I think how the scenes are done in terms of the visual style is artful and seductive. Yes, the scenes are no holds barred but I don’t think people should judge it as softcore or dismiss it as merely a movie about a sexaholic because this movie is about sibling dynamics and human relationships and how hard it is for some people to obtain such things that may be considered as something that comes natural for others.

That said, the fact that the film doesn’t provide enough background or backstory to Brandon and Sissy does serve a big challenge, and at times I wonder if the film necessarily has to be so raw about it, because I truly would like for many audiences to come see this movie but it does carry elements that may turn people off.
Michael Fassbender who hits stardom this past couple of years or so, gives an unbelievable, unadulterated performance. I haven’t seen Fassbender-McQueen’s previous collaboration, Hunger, but I can sense there’s a level of trust and comfort in their working relationships that allows Fassbender to bare all, not just literally, for his role. Fassbender is bold, daring and highly committed. There’s something about him that just draws you in.

My favorite Carrey Mulligan scene in this film would have to be when she sings a slowed down jazz rendition of the iconic song ‘New York New York’ which I think speaks true about the nature of this film and about Brandon.

As a lounge singer, Mulligan couldn’t be any more radiant.

As Brandon’s sister, Sissy, Mulligan understands that that this is a woman who either looks for love at the wrong places or looks for love, finds love, love uses her and then love runs away every single time. There’s fear, insecurity, pain, but also persistence in Mulligan’s performance.
You may need a cold shower after watching SHAME, but you won’t be able to easily shake it off, this is the kind of film that would stay with you for days.

Tomb Raider Film To Be Complete Reboot

Tomb Raider producer Graham King has revealed that he took inspiration from Rise of the Planet of the Apes for the Lara Croft franchise reboot.

King told Digital Spy that he has received a script from Iron Man screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

"We're going through [the script] creatively, bringing in directors to talk to and then I get that horrible job of sitting with 25-30 young girls that want to play Lara Croft," he said.

Asked about his approach to the new Lara Croft movie, King said: "For me it's re-inventing the wheel a bit, it's a reboot. We're going back before she was Lara Croft, so it's a much more emotional character piece. She's in search of her parents.

"One of my favorite movies of this year was Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the way they rebooted that franchise. I thought it was fantastic and took a lot away from that for Tomb Raider."

We Have Your Access To See Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows In Sacramento

December 16, 2011

We have your access to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Warner Bros. Pictures has provide me with Exclusive code for the fans to get access to the screening in Sacramento,Ca.

Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr). has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large—Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris)—and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder—a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by one Professor Moriarty.

Mixing business with pleasure, Holmes tracks the clues to an underground gentlemen’s club, where he and his brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) are toasting Dr. Watson (Jude Law) on his last night of bachelorhood. It is there that Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who sees more than she is telling and whose unwitting involvement in the prince’s murder makes her the killer’s next target. Holmes barely manages to save her life and, in return, she reluctantly agrees to help him. The investigation becomes ever more dangerous as it leads Holmes, Watson and Sim across the continent, from England to France to Germany and finally to Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead as he spins a web of death and destruction—all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history.

Bryan Singer To Direct The Munsters TV Show

Bryan Singer is moving from mutants to Munsters.

The producer-director-writer, who has been involved with three of the X-Men films in the superhero franchise, is closing in on a deal to direct and executive produce NBC's The Munsters.

The project, which received a pilot order earlier this month, is billed as an imaginative reinvention of the classic comedy series as a visually spectacular one-hour drama.

Singer will executive produce alongside Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies), who also is writing the Universal Television-produced project.

Fuller and NBC first made an attempt to revive the 1960s CBS sitcom last year, with the network ultimately passing. His newer version is said to be an edgier and slightly darker take exploring origins of Herman and Lily Munster (originally played by Fred Gwynne and Yvonne De Carlo) and how they arrived at the famed 1313 Mockingbird Lane address.

The original series, produced by Universal Studios, aired 70 episodes from 1964-66 on CBS.
Singer directed the first two X-Men films and produced the second and third in the series. He also helmed and produced Superman Returns and Valkyrie and directed the upcoming Jack the Giant Killer.

The Evil Dead Remake Will Happen In 2012

Sony Pictures will distribute the remake of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead, which Fede Alvarez will direct in 2012, around the world, except in the U.K. and France.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and FilmDistrict negotiated the deal with Ghost House Pictures, which is producing the reboot. Rob Tapert, original franchise star Bruce Campbell and Raimi are producing. Ghost House partners Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane are executive producers.

“Sony Pictures has a fantastic history collaborating with both Ghost House and FilmDistrict and we couldn’t be more excited to continue working together on the contemporary adaptation of Evil Dead,” said Jeff Blake, chairman of Sony Pictures worldwide marketing and distribution. “Sam and Rob have an extraordinary vision and we can’t wait to share this film with audiences in most territories throughout the world.”

Hewing close in plot to the original released in 1981, the new Evil Dead follows what happens when five friends in a remote cabin discover a Book of the Dead and unleash a demonic force. Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues and Diablo Cody wrote the screenplay.

Nicole Brown and J.R. Young are overseeing the remake for Ghost House. Lia Buman will oversee the project for FilmDistrict.

Raimi co-wrote and directed two Evil Dead sequels before moving on to more mainstream projects nearly 20 years ago. The producers and filmmakers hope to reboot the franchise with this new version.
FilmDistrict has recently released the films Insidious, Soul Surfer, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Drive and The Rum Diary. The company will next release Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, in December.

Tom Cruise Could Star In We Mortals Are. Based On Japanese Graphic Novel All You Need Is Kill

Tom Cruise is a guy who likes to stay busy.

With two films in the can (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Rock of Ages), one filming (One Shot) and another (Horizons) lined up after that, Cruise is solidifying his interest in starring in the Warner Bros. sci-fi actioner We Mortals Are, with negotiations expected to begin soon.

Based on the 2004 Japanese graphic novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe, the film would have Cruise playing a soldier defending Earth from attacking aliens. Killed in battle, he is then stuck in a time loop that causes him to relive that day over and over while gaining strength and skill each time as he tries to change his fate.

Dante Harper and Joby Harold wrote the adapted screenplay.

Has Ghost Protocol hitting theaters December 21 and Rock of Ages opening in June. With Paramount's One Shot shooting now for a February 2013 release, and Universal's Horizons lined up to start production in the new year for a summer 2013 opening, Cruise could conceivably film Mortals next summer.
Oddly for Cruise, who likes to mix up roles and genres, Horizons and We Mortals Are both involve sci-fi settings and conceits involving a soldier battling an alien race.

Olive The Movie- First Feature Film Shot 100% On A Cell Phone

I came across this movie today on the web and not sure if this has ever happened before. Olive is the very first full length feature film shot 100% on a cell phone (Nokia N8 phone). A 35 mm lens adapter was fabricated to fit the smart phone in order to achieve a shallow depth of field.

The film simply put is about a little girl that transforms the lives of three people without speaking one word.

The movie stars two time Academy Award nominated actress Gena Rowlands (The Notebook, A Woman Under the Influence). The sound design was done by Skywalker Sound.

The financing of Olive was done independently of any corporation. The goal now is to be the first film to not only be shot on a cell phone, but to also be the first independently financed feature film on 2,000+ theaters across the United States without the backing of a major studio.

Make Sure to LIKE Olive The Movies Facebook page.

Make sure to Follow the film on Twitter also.

After watch the first 5 minutes can you tell that it was shot with a cell phone? Didn't think so.

Is This The Lizard From The Amazing Spider-Man?

SpiderMedia.ru is reporting that this is the first look at The Lizard from the upcoming movie The Amazing Spider-Man. This isn't what I was expecting and let's see if this is how the final product will look like.

Here is some background on The Lizard:

Curtis Connors was born in Coral Gables, Florida. He was a gifted surgeon who enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent off to war. He performed emergency battlefield surgery on wounded GIs, but his right arm was injured in a blast and had to be amputated. After his return to civilian life as a research technologist, Connors became obsessed with uncovering the secrets of reptilian limb regeneration and studied reptilian biology extensively. Working from his home in the Florida Everglades with the help of war buddy Ted Sallis, he finally developed an experimental serum taken from reptilian DNA. He successfully regrew the missing limb of a rabbit and then, despite the warnings of his wife Martha, chose to test it on himself. Connors ingested the formula and his missing arm did indeed grow back. The formula had a side effect; Connors was subsequently transformed into a reptilian humanoid monster

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, shot entirely in 3D, will be released on July 3, 2012. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures. The executive producers are Stan Lee, Kevin Feige, and Michael Grillo

Harrison Ford Returns To Space In Ender's Game

After nearly three decades, Harrison Ford may finally be returning to where he truly belongs… outer space.

Ford became one of the most popular stars in the world thanks to the space opera known as "Star Wars," but, after completing his tour of duty with the Rebel Alliance in 1983, he hung up Han Solo's pistol belt and hasn't been behind the wheel of a spaceship since.

Now Variety has intercepted a transmission that says Ford may be up for the adult lead of Colonel Hyrum Graff opposite a now-confirmed 14-year-old Asa Butterfield ("Hugo") in the hotly anticipated "Ender's Game."

Essentially "Harry Potter" meets "Full Metal Jacket" in space, the "Ender" series of novels by Orson Scott Card follow the pint-sized Napoleon named Ender as he fights his way through other child soldiers in a futuristic Battle School under the tutelage of Graff. Casting Ford as this tenured professor of alien ass kicking would be ideal, as he has proved in the past that no one can ground science fiction with more gruff gravitas than him.

The actor has made a subtle inroad back to the genre that defined him in the last few years, with both "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" as well as "Cowboys & Aliens" combining adventure tropes with sci-fi. "Ender" is the real deal, though, with epic star battles and Zero-G fighting units and everything.

Of course Ford is not the only name on "Wolverine" director Gavin Hood's wishlist, having already gotten a "no thanks" from Viggo Mortensen to command training at the International Fleet boys' military academy. Whether we'll get to see the "Blade Runner" actor fire a laser gun again in our time remains a hopeful thought.

Wear Star Wars, Share Star Wars Come And Join Us

You might know Katie….you know, The Star Wars Girl? Her story went viral about a year ago, and people all over fell in love with the darling little girl with a love of Star Wars. Katie was in first grade and being bullied by her boy classmates for, of all things, having a Star Wars water bottle. She was told girls can’t like Star Wars. She told her mom, through tears, she would just take a pink one instead to avoid being harassed. Her mom told her to follow her heart, and that it was okay to be different. Katie’s mom, Carrie, wrote a blog post about the situation and in days thousands and thousands of comments offering Katie support came pouring in.

Join us on December 16, 2011 for Wear Star Wars, Share Star Wars. Last year the Internet held a day of support for a little girl who was brave enough to be different. Pigtail Pals celebrates all girls, and we’d love to have you and your kiddos participate!

Celebrate this day of anti-bullying by wearing something Star Wars or science/science fiction-related. Show your support of girls who love science, adventure, and are brave enough to be different from the tide of pink and pretty surrounding them.

Katie’s family has also suggested donating a Star Wars or science fiction toy to a child in need this holiday season. PLEASE put a post-it note on the new, unwrapped toy specifying that it can go to a girl or a boy; otherwise, these traditional “boy toys” will be given only to boys. You can bring the toy to a hospital, a shelter, or drop it off with any organization collecting toys.

New Poster For John Carter

The title may not be the most obviously sci-fi ever, but we're still pretty excited about John Carter (not yet Of Mars). After all, it's directed by Andrew Stanton of Wall-E and Finding Nemo fame; it's based on a kick-ass series of pulpy adventure novels set on another planet, and the footage we've seen so far looks rather beautiful. Now there's a new poster for the film, which not only echoes the cover and colour of one recent Barsoom compilation but makes it a little clearer what's going on.

New Images From Disney's JOHN CARTER-

After all, here we see Taylor Kitsch's John Carter in all his nappy-wearing glory, surrounded by the clearly alien shapes of the green Tharks against the background of the Red Planet. If that doesn't get across what's going on, we're not sure what will. The new tagline, too - Lost In Our World, Found In Another - neatly sums up Stanton's approach to the story and Carter himself: a disaffected post-Civil War mess back on Earth finds himself a new life on Mars.

Kyle Chandler To Star In Broken City

He was last seen trying to keep his son and the lad’s friends from being menaced by a marauding alien (and the US army) in Super 8, but for his next trick, Kyle Chandler is going to dabble in politics, joining the cast of Allen Hughes’ thriller Broken City.

Mark Wahlberg is starring as a Noo Yoik detective hired by a powerful local mayor (Russell Crowe) to find out who has been having it away with his wife (Catherine Zeta Jones).

But when Wahlberg eventually tracks down the man, the lover suddenly turns up dead and the detective starts to delve into a far darker conspiracy.

Barry Pepper is also aboard, playing a mayoral candidate who is challenging Crowe, and Chandler will be one of the main players in his campaign. Griffin Dunne, James Ransone, Jeffrey Wright, Justin Chambers and Alona Tal are all in the cast.

Hughes is busy shooting the film right now, which has a US release date set for January 18, 2013.

Chandler has been doing rather well for himself since getting plenty of notice (and a surprise Emmy win this year) for his work on TV drama Friday Night Lights. He’ll next be seen in Ben Affleck’s hostage drama Argo.

AMERICAN REUNION-Get A Look Behind The Camera

Universal has delivered a featurette, that takes you behind the scenes of the upcoming film AMERICAN REUNION. We get to see the cast interact and get to know each other again.

Red Band Trailer For American Reunion-

Watch the clip after the Jump...

<a href='http://movies.msn.com/movies/movie-trailers/#/video/f55e5d40-b128-4de6-b896-3532fe735aaf?src=FLPl:embed::uuids' target='_new' title='&#39;American Reunion&#39; Set Visit' >Video: &#39;American Reunion&#39; Set Visit</a>

Actually, there’s not a lot here that’s truly offensive, aside from the concept of Jason Biggs’ Jim still being a chronic masturbator. Despite being seemingly happily married to Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), Jim can’t resist the chance to thrash one out when she’s in the bath, but is caught – in more ways than one – when his son arrives in the room. There’s one more little beat after that, but we won’t spoil it for you.

Suffice to say, this is exactly what you’d expect from a new American Pie outing, and while it doesn’t exactly scream fresh and new, it is at least nice to see the old gang reunited, even if they’re not present here.

American Pie: Reunion (as it’s apparently called over here) will be out on April 6 next year with Seann William Scott, Natasha Lyonne, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eugene Levy and Eddie Kaye Thomas all present and correct.
