Win Tickets Advance To See Oz The Great And Powerful In Sacramento

Win your tickets to see an advance screening for Oz The Great And Powerful! The screening is on March 5th @ 7:30PM in Sacramento.

Oz The Great And Powerful is an upcoming 2013 American fantasy adventure film directed by Sam Raimi. The film is inspired by L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and is the prequel to the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The film stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, otherwise known as the Wizard of Oz. It also stars Mila Kunis as Theodora, Michelle Williams as Glinda, and Rachel Weisz as Evanora. The film is produced by Joe Roth and co-producers Grant Curtis and Joshua Donen, and will be released by Walt Disney Pictures in traditional 2D, as well as in the Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D formats.

Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great And Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot--fame and fortune are his for the taking--that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity--and even a bit of wizardry--Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Review. Better On Paper

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Review
By: MattInRC

The Medieval-era fairy tale JACK THE GIANT SLAYER is big on visuals but stumbles in key places.

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER is one of those films which you can understand why it didn't receive a dance card to the Summer Blockbuster party. Exciting in parts but full of blah malaise in many others, Jack is disappointing in its totality and nearly offensive in its willingness to rip off other films.

Jack (Nicholas Hoult, Warm Bodies) is a poor young farmhand, a dreamer raised on fairy tales of giants and far-away adventures. Although his uncle's farm is on the brink of failure, he still dreams of experiencing the glories he read about as a child. In many ways, he's not very different from Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson, Alice in Wonderland), who's similarly spellbound as she receives the same stories in her father's opulent castle. Unaware these tales actually existed, Isabelle and Jack learn of giants who roamed the Earth long ago, engaging mankind in a war made possible by huge magic bean stalks that linked the human world to those located in the clouds above. Since then, the giants have retreated to their prison in the sky, planning their next assault while the attacks became the stuff of legend on Earth.

When those same giants return, via an evil deception by the king's adviser Lord Roderick (Stanley Tucci, Captain America: TFA), mankind once again summons its strength against an enemy it cannot defeat by strength alone. Their only hope is the long-lost magic crown that can control the minds of the giants, which led to their first defeat all those years ago. When one of the beans sprouts a new stalk into the sky, taking Isbaelle with it, King Brahmwell (Ian McShane, Snow White and The Huntsman) summons Elmont (Ewan McGregor, Star Wars: Episode III) and his elite team to find her. They are unaware that Roderick holds the magic crown, and that he's planning to usurp Brahmwell once he controls the giants. When Elmont and Jack learn of Roderick's plan, they seek to free Isabelle and warn the kingdom before it falls to the impending attack.

On paper, Jack looks poised for a dominating opening and a good run through the Spring: it's directed by Bryan Singer (Superman Returns), written by The Usual Suspect's Christopher McQuarrie, and sports an all-star cast. But planning only gets one so far, and Jack suffers greatly under several avoidable inhibitors. McQuarrie's script takes on too many liberties with the original story, trading the cow for a horse, and placing Jack in the middle of a theft-gone-awry as a monk tries to steal the beans from the castle keep. McQuarrie should also be flogged for introducing what could be worst character of the year in the two-headed giant Fallon (voiced by Bill Nighy and John Kassir). What's so unforgivable here is that the smaller head looks and sounds just like LOTR's Gollum; frankly, I'm surprised the studio wasn't sued for its illegal use of the likeness. Every time he appeared, our test audience belted out uncontrolled laughter as if they too recognized the connection.

Hoult and McGregor have good chemistry, but never have time to dramatically gel on-screen, instead constantly reacting to imagined action in front of a green screen. Tomlinson's performance is throw-away, but that's partially to blame on McQuarrie's paper-thin character development. All of this cumulatively builds up to a final action piece that's fun but instantly forgettable the moment the lights come on. In fact, nothing about Jack will stick with you. Hoult is a rising young star with a good career ahead of him, but Tomlinson needs to separate herself from the growing crowd of 20-year-old hottie actresses. That won't be easy, especially when we're left knowing almost as little about her after Jack than before the lights dimmed. McGregor is his usual post-Obi Wan badass, and Tucci is serviceable but quickly fades from memory. Singer's action feels like a diet version of LOTR, but his lack of command of basic human emotions turns the movie into an over-stuffed re-imagined fairy tale that's full of action but little else.

Jack the Giant Slayer is decent, meaningless fun, but the Gollum-wanna-be and the flat replaceable performances by Tomlinson and Tucci tend to weigh things down. Jack is the perfect example of a well-intentioned film that looks good on paper but misses in its execution. Eight- to ten-year olds will enjoy it, while teens might disappear to see the better D&H: Witch Hunters. Jack isn't terrible, but it gets pretty full of malaise going down the stretch. See it in the theater before word gets out, for it could see an early exit. Jack the Giant Slayer is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 114 minutes.

The Hobbit: There And Back Again Arrives In 2014

Looks like those dwarves and that Hobbit are taking the long road in the “back again” section of their journey. New Line has announced that There And Back Again, the third film in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, will now hit theaters on December 17, 2014.

The film was previously slotted to appear on July 18 of that year, which raised eyebrows given that the Tolkien films have always arrived just before Christmas as a sort of early present from Peter Jackson and co. And no, the delay is a calculated release shift, not Pete locking himself in the editing facility to get some much-needed kip.

So while this means we will have to wait that bit longer for the third and final Hobbit outing, it’s probably a good move by the studio, since it gets the film away from competing with X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

There And Back Again finds our heroes dealing with a massive battle, more trouble from orcs and a new dark threat coming to power. The movie stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage and approximately 17,000 more actors.

As for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, that’s still on course to land on December 13 this year. Assuming Smaug decides he’s ready. He’s a picky one, that scaly git.

Gary Oldman Joins Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

Things are really ramping up for Matt Reeves' upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. In addition to the returning Andy Serkis, recent reports name Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee as two of the sequel's principal cast. Now, ComingSoon.net has learned exclusively that Gary Oldman will be boarding the project as the leader of a human colony!

Set 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn finds most of humanity wiped out and the intelligent apes ruling over the world. Part of the film's focus is said to be on a small group of San Francisco-based scientists that are forming a resistance against the apes and part follows Serkis' Caesar as he, like his namesake, tries to maintain order and power within his new civilization.

A name very well known to cinephiles, Oldman recently starred in John Hillcoat's Lawless and reprised his role as Commissioner Gordon in last summer's The Dark Knight Rises. He can be seen later this year in Robert Luketic's Paranoia and early next year in Jose Padilha's RoboCop.

Featuring a screenplay by Mark Bomback, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes starts filming this spring for a May 23, 2014 release. Peter Chernin, Dylan Clarke, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa are producing.

Top Bond Theme Songs

Top Bond Theme Songs
By: MattInRC

Now that Hollywood has rightly celebrated Adele's instant Bond classic Skyfall with an Oscar for Best Song, it got us thinking of the most memorable from the 007 franchise. To be honest, it's impossible to qualify such a list, as we're talking about radically different directions these themes have taken throughout its 50 year history. Choose electronics beats like Madonna's Die Another Day or Duran Duran's View to Kill over Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and Moonraker? No matter your preference, we love them all for the same reasons: deep orchestral melodies surrounded by powerful voices and that trademark Monte Hall Bond theme.

Who does that mix better than the others is anyone's guess. For now, and without going into an actual numbered list, we present our favorites in the order they appeared:

From Russia with Love - Among the lesser-known themes, Matt Monro busts out his best Andy Williams for a tasty preview of the direction the franchise would take. It's interesting that his version was not the one we got in the opening credits, but its elegant melody has Bond written all over it.

Goldfinger - The gold standard (pardon the pun) for all Bond themes now and forever. Shirley Bassey belts out a timeless classic. Man With The Golden Gun - I used to play this all the time against my mother's Sound of Music soundtrack, just to piss her off. Deliciously decadent, Lulu's performance of Gun is fun even if it's way dated.

Live and Let Die - Paul McCartney and Wings introduced us to another new Bond in grand style. It's not as epic as I remember, partially due to the fact that so many better Bond themes were later produced, but it's still worth mentioning.

Moonraker - Everyone eviscerates Moonraker for its over-the-top-space-ark cheesiness, but I have to say that Composer John Barry creates a lush audio environment, including another Bassey monster ballad. Love it or not, Moonraker is one of my favorites.

View to a Kill - If I had to pick a top song, it's gotta be the Duran Duran epic. Filled with the best parts of what makes Bond songs so memorable, Duran Duran and John Barry got a little Grammy love with a nomination for Best Song. That one never EVER gets old.

Tomorrow Never Dies - Sultry and passionate, Sheryl Crow brings it with a slow burn theme that could have been used 30 years ago. Tomorow Never Dies is another of my favorite Bond movies, and really represents one of the last good films for Brosnan in general.

Die Another Day - What started out as a brilliant Act 1 with 007 in prison and tortured sadly deteriorated into a facepalm third act. Thank god Madonna's theme is so damn sexy.

Casino Royale - If Duran Duran hadn't made View, my pick would have to fall squarely here. It's interesting to note that Cornell's original (and honestly superior) track was rejected by Composer David Arnold at the last minute. Check out the rejected version on YouTube, and let us know what you think.

Skyfall - There's little I can say that will elevate Adele's sultry addition to Bond themes, except that in my mind the song became an instant classic, adding more to the greatness that is Skyfall the movie.

Do you have a favorite set of Bond opening themes?

Relativity Signs Mikael Håfström To Direct Epic Adventure Film Tunnels

Relativity Signs Mikael Håfström To Direct Epic Adventure Film Tunnels,  Andrew Lobel Pens Script Based Upon Best-Selling Fantasy Book Series.

Relativity Media announced today they have signed Mikael Håfström (The Tomb, 1408) to direct a film based on the New York Times’ best-selling internationally-acclaimed fantasy adventure book series Tunnels. The script by Andrew Lobel is based on the adapted screenplay originally written by Joel Bergvall & Simon Sandquist. Tunnels is the film adaptation of the first installment of the novel series from Scholastic/Chicken House publishing, by authors Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams, which has sold over one million copies and has been published in nearly forty countries worldwide.

The authors have already completed five sequels with the sixth and final book in the series, Terminal, to be published in the U.S. this Fall. The property was unearthed by Barry Cunningham, the man credited with discovering Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling and whose boutique Chicken House imprint is part of Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books and the U.S. publisher of the Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series. Tunnels is a thrilling, epic fantasy adventure for all ages. Beneath the streets of London, two teenage boys discover an incredible, hidden underground world where a secret civilization has been desperately waiting for a hero to save them all. The deeper they go, the closer they get to unearthing an evil that could destroy the world above and put an end to the lives they once lived.

Tunnels is being produced by Mark Canton (300, Immortals), Neil Canton (Back to the Future) and Danny Davids alongside Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter). Relativity’s President Tucker Tooley (The Fighter) will executive produce with Kelly Dennis (1408). Atmosphere’s David Hopwood will serve as co-producer.

Cunningham said, “Only a few times in my life have I felt that rush of imagination in a story that I know is going to sweep up an audience in its grip, Tunnels made me believe in adventure, bravery and a new world.”

Tooley said, “Andrew has written an incredible script and Mikael brings a creative and powerful vision to this project. The Tunnels novels have proven to be one of the most immensely exciting adventure series in recent years and we can’t wait to translate that excitement to the big screen.”

“The originality of the book and its sequels, which uniquely combine the adventure of Indiana Jones with the magic of Narnia, along with its franchise potential, is what attracted Relativity, Neil, Danny and myself to Tunnels and I’m delighted to be producing it with them,” Mark Canton added. “Having just finished TheTomb with Mikael Hafstrom, I know first hand that he’s the perfect person to direct this epic fantasy, and Andrew Lobel’s script has captured every bit of the incredible world that Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams have created.”

“Barry Cunningham clearly has a keen eye for spotting authors whose epic stories appeal to readers of all ages around the globe,” said Ellie Berger, President, Scholastic Trade. “Scholastic is proud to be the American publisher of the bestselling Tunnels series, and we look forward to seeing this underground and imaginative world expand through film.” Relativity’s Jason Barhydt will oversee the project for the studio.

Relativity’s latest film adaptation was Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling Safe Haven which opened on Valentine’s Day February 14th and grossed nearly $34 million in its first five days of release.

Relativity also recently acquired U.S. rights to distribute Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s daring, hotly- pursued directorial debut Don Jon’s Addiction at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Up next, Relativity will release the comedy 21 and Over (in theatres March 1, 2013) and the corporate espionage thriller Paranoia (in theatres October 4, 2013). Relativity is currently in post-production on Scott Cooper’s gritty dramatic thriller currently-titled Out of the Furnace and Luc Besson’s comedic action film currently-titled Malavita (October 18, 2013) with EuropaCorp. Relativity is currently in production on Jimmy Hayward’s upcoming animated, hilarious buddy comedy Turkeys (November 1, 2013) and the currently-titled thriller Three Days to Kill with EuropaCorp.
