IDIOCRACY Returns To Theaters

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE AND ART HOUSE CONVERGENCE GOT WHAT AMERICA CRAVES.

Reunion of Cast & Filmmakers to Mark the 10th Anniversary of IDIOCRACY with Screenings Nationwide, Worldwide Livestream Q&A and Voter Registration Drive

Ten years ago, satirist Mike Judge told of an impossible future in which our collective intelligence had dropped so low it threatened to destroy the world. In this future, America was run by a corrupt, sociopathic former pro-wrestler with severe anger management issues, and the most popular entertainment in the land was a YouTube-esque video playlist called "Ow My Balls."

Flash forward to today. We are approaching the end of the most bizarre, absurdist presidential race in U.S. history. Over the past months, thousands have questioned in social media whether IDIOCRACY was actually a documentary. Mike Judge's sadly prescient film has transcended its cult classic status to become a vibrant and essential facet of this election conversation.

The Alamo Drafthouse, along with the network of Art House Convergence Theaters and local League of Women Voters chapters, want to invite everyone to revisit and rediscover IDIOCRACY on the eve of the 2016 presidential election.

Members of the cast and crew of IDIOCRACY will be live in person at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica at 6:45pm on October 4th for a screening of the film and a post-movie conversation.

Concurrent IDIOCRACY screenings will also take place at Alamo Drafthouse locations and Art House Convergence theaters across the country and the post-movie conversation will be live-streamed to those audiences.

For those that can't make it to an Alamo Drafthouse or Art House Convergence theater, fear not, you can still join in the fun. Watch the film from your own DVD, from Amazon, iTunes or the platform of your choice. Press play exactly at 7:00pm Pacific Standard Time, and then tune into Facebook Live from facebook.com/alamodrafthouse for the post-movie conversation at 8:25pm PST.

Questions will be taken from the live audience in Santa Monica, but also from the live-stream and Facebook Live audiences via Twitter using the hashtag #IdiocracyToday.

In attendance at the event will be director and writer Mike Judge and star Maya Rudolph.

Also, the Alamo Drafthouse's collectible art gallery Mondo is creating a licensed IDIOCRACY shirt for the occasion. It will be available on mondotees.com. A portion of proceeds from merchandise and participating screenings will be donated to local League of Women Voters chapters to support their non-partisan efforts to register and educate voters.

Whether you are voting for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Jill Stein, Gary Johnson, or whether you just want to cast a write-in vote for Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, these options are all your right -- but first you must register to vote!

"If we learn one thing from this election cycle," says Alamo Founder and CEO Tim League, "it's that to truly be an American one must register to vote, join the debate and participate in democracy."

Movie Review: #TheMagnificentSeven

The Magnificent Seven is the best film in months. Thank the western movie gods.

Review by Matt Cummings

Director Antoine Fuqua's The Magnificent Seven is perhaps a mirror of its time: a restless, fun, but ultimately pulpy action flick with a tad more substance than most brainless fare. And yet, it's so much fun, so funny, and never boring that any problems I (or it appears every other American critic) have with it are easily erased.

After witnessing unimaginable loss by the evil robber baron Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), a hardworking town seeks revenge and righteousness in the form of seven antiheroes, each with their own checkered past. There's the bounty hunter leader Chisolm (Denzel Washington), the card-playing womanizer Faraday (Chris Pratt), Chisolm's sniper buddy Goodnight (Ethan Hawke) and assassin/friend Billy (Byung-hun Lee), a wanted felon (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and the aging hunter Horne (Vincent D'Onofrio). As the widow Emma (Haley Bennett) returns from recruiting the team, she realizes that a bloodbath is coming that could see her friends and neighbors become victims of Bogue's sadism. Matched up against hopeless odds, Emma and her Magnificent Seven must deal with personal demons while attempting to liberate a town that might not want them there. The results will see some pay the ultimate price, while rage will propel others into battle for the first time.

Fuqua brings several memorable elements to The Magnificent Seven, the first of which is protection of community by common strangers. Why these seven individuals band together to help a dirt town that won't even exist 50 years later is one of two interesting ribbons that flow through the movie. And while it never truly answers it, we get the sense that it's due entirely to caring for your common man. I would have liked more exploration of that than the (for what feels like) minutes of assembling the killing machines against Bogue's army, but it's entirely adequate to the task. Given the divided nature of our current political discourse, it's a nice theme to get behind.

The other theme - internal friendship - gets the better treatment. Every one of these men comes along for their own selfish desires, whether it's for money, fame, loss, isolation, or righting wrongs. For others, it's because they don't have anything else better to do, but the chemistry is so good that we don't need declarations of love for Washington's Chisolm to know that they're there. Instead these men poke fun at one another in some of the best one-liners of the year, led mostly by Pratt. He's a natural joker and a nice contrast to the serious Washington; but there are five others here, with most of them getting their time to shine. Among the strangest is D'Onofrio, whose high-pitched voice made many laugh then got on a few nerves after awhile. Still, he's very capable here but not given the screen time or thrust for joining the team. There's some suggestion he might know someone on the team, but it's never explored. Martin Sensmeier perhaps gets the least treatment as the loner Native Red Harvest; there's a simple discussion, a breaking of the 'bread' in gross/hilarious scene, and he's onboard. Again, a minute of exposition to explain his past (and one less of that fortification buildup) would have helped.

Even though Hawke's Goodnight is the damaged war veteran, he's not the only one here with issues, and it's great to see how Chisolm and Frarady slowly break him down to build him back up. Unfortunately, Goodnight's redemption is not handled well at all - without giving it away, we can see the arc coming a mile away and it's not satisfying at all. The others are merely wall dressing, leaving me to wonder why some survive and others don't. Again, you might find yourself after the movie wishing Fuqua had made better choices in who's left after the bloodbath. And it's one hell of a fight.

The Magnificent Seven is one of the best-choreographed westerns and movies in general I've seen in awhile. Cinematographer Mauro Fiore is a long-time Fuqua colleague, and here they bring the wild west to life in all its gritty ugliness. In the way Sergio Leone took the gleam off 40's/50's American westerns, so too does Fiore. He brings wide open spaces to equal with tightly-shot character moments, which increases the overall dark tone. But it's the action that so terrific, especially in the elongated siege of the village. It almost feels like a strip club as baddies seem to come out of the woodwork, only to be dispensed by a dizzying amount of Washington hip-shots. That's not necessarily an achievement, because it starts to lose its effect once we witness it for the 12th time. Again, it's a minor point because our team creates such an impressive and immersive experience that we're ready to dismiss the old-school cheesiness of it.

It's clear that Washington does not do sequels (people, you know you want another Equalizer!), but his magnetic personality serves like a sun for the rest of his planets. They operate around him with near-perfect motion, minimizing some of their reasons for joining. That's not a fault, so long as you can accept it. You'll also have to accept that The Magnificent Seven doesn't offer anything new or inventive to the genre; it's an engrossing revenge/redemption film, and while some reveals do pop up you already know some of what to expect as you pay for the ticket. Sarsgaard is a one-dimensional psychopath with very little development beyond his truly irredeemable personality. He's not someone to be bullied, bargained, or reasoned with, and the necessity of his death is established in the very good 10 minute intro. What's more, the film is a commentary in itself about how much we're willing to buy into the 'bible' of a film, that our appreciation of the film is based entirely on the universe that our team fashions. I'd have to say that I bought that like an Eskimo buys ice from a con artist, but at least I don't feel bad about that.

The Magnificent Seven doesn't offer anything particularly new or inventive, but it's a smart, well-build and executed affair that will make your popcorn and soda taste that much better. It's one of the best releases in months, even though every other critic out there might say otherwise. The Magnificent Seven is ready to prove that it can prosper in a year of stunning disappointments and massive box office flops by doing what it does best: entertain.

The Magnificent Seven is PG-13 for extended and intense sequences of Western violence, and for historical smoking, some language and suggestive material and has a runtime of 132 minutes.

Movie Review: #Storks

Storks exceeds in cuteness but poops its diapers with a poor plot.

Review by Matt Cummings

We've witnessed a 2016 animated slate that's included the very good (Kubo and the Two Strings), the meh (Zoopotpia), and the truly awful (Norm of the North). For early Fall's Storks, we get something in the middle, filled with heartening moments, but disturbing in its overall premise.

In a world where storks like Junior (voiced by Andy Samberg) used to bring babies to homes, times have changed. After a delivery goes wrong - leaving the human Tulip (Katie Crown) without a home - the storks decide to enter the package delivery business. Over eighteen years, the company led by Hunter (Kelsey Grammer) has become a success, irregardless of Tulip's clumsy efforts to disrupt that. But for the human boy Nate (Anton Starkman), his desire for a brother leads him to write a letter to those very same storks, unaware of the company's new 'vision.' When Tulip accidentally starts the old baby-making machine, she produces a little girl that Junior must deliver. As Tulip tags along for the ride, the duo will realize that Baby's cuteness is their greatest strength, soothing even the vicious wolf pack (Key and Peale) with her big baby eyes, while Tulip struggles to locate her missing family using broken pieces of her tracking device.

Filled with a star-studded troupe of voice actors, Storks also features a venerated crew behind the camera, including Writer/Co-Director Nicholas Stoller and Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. And Storks also features some hilarious moments, especially when Key and Peale's wolves get going. In many ways, such genetics keeps things moving, even as its diaper fills up with two huge story gaps.

The real problem with Storks lies in its story. Essentially, it tackles two unpopular themes: unplanned pregnancies and babies that parents might no longer want. Throughout the film, we're led to believe that Baby is the only "order" and that the storks only need to deliver her before returning to package delivery; but it soon becomes apparent that hundreds of letters have been received over the years, which means that hundreds of parents are about to get children they may no longer want. I know that Stoller didn't envision such complications, but it illuminates a constant problem in film: the idea that we'll all "get it" regardless of the inconsistencies.

The unplanned pregnancy is another matter: when Nate tells mom and dad that he wants a baby brother, mom and dad tell him, "We're fine with one," which then sends the boy to mail the Storks. As the parents play along with Nate's construction project (another funny part in its wild ricketiness), we forget that the Gardeners don't really want another child. Of course, all of that changes when Baby arrives, but it's a truly diabolical concept. There's never a "I always wanted a little girl" conversation between Mr. and Mrs. Gardener: they just accept Baby as their own, in a scene that's a real tear-jerker. The epilogue is also incredibly heart-warming, but by then the damage has already been done. Parents will have a hard time rationalizing these issues to their older kids, but young ones will lap up the big eyes of our characters and the physical comedy behind Junior's performance.

Voice acting is very good, with Aniston and Burrell strangely playing smaller roles here. It's the story between Junior and Tulip that dominates Storks, and the young actress handles it very well. Crown's voice comes alive as the overly-positive Tulip, while Samberg's sixth run in an animated movie is perhaps his best. Tulip's story reflects a common theme of abandonment (or threat of) in children's animation, which when done correctly produces instant classics like Toy Story 2, Bambi, and even Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Storks does not fall into this category, but it's an enjoyable time, so long as you stay away from any logic about what you're actually watching.

Storks might be an early Fall surprise, based solely on its cuteness and a rather touching ending. But it's likely that parents will have a hard time wrapping their heads around the many negative connotations such as unwanted pregnancies and babies that parents asked for a long time ago. Kids will love the film, but might ask similar questions down the road. Be ready for that one.

Storks is rated PG for mild action and some thematic elements and has a runtime of 89 minutes.

TV Review: Lethal Weapon "Pilot"

I'm getting too bored for this shit.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

Though it was far from the first buddy movie, Lethal Weapon sort of perfected the form. So many of its particulars weren’t that remarkable on paper. The partners being separated by race, age and temperament, yet forging a bond all the same, all of this was old-hat even in 1987. The alchemy of Lethal Weapon’s success came down to the idiosyncrasies of its players. Shane Black’s witty, gritty script, Richard Donner’s expert craftsmanship and, above all, the incomparable chemistry between stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Lethal Weapon was funny, brutal, exciting and heartwarming in equal measure, and gave us two characters whose camaraderie was so engaging that they became the gold standard all buddy-cop duos would forever be held to. The adventures of Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh continued on for three more films, the last of which arrived way back in 1998. The characters have laid dormant in the nearly two decades since, likely due to Gibson going supernova-insane and obliterating his public image.

Now Fox has dusted off Riggs and Rog for the small screen, rebooting Lethal Weapon as a weekly cop series. Gibson and Glover are nowhere to be seen, as Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans (Sr.) step into their shoes. The setup is still the same, for the most part. Riggs is a war veteran and sharpshooter who recently lost his wife (pregnant here) in a horrific car accident, leaving him despondent and dangerous. Murtaugh is a family man who recently turned 50 (now recovering from a recent heart attack). Roger is inching up on retirement, and while not quite ready to pack it in just yet, mostly wants to have a nice, safe, comfortable existence. So of course he’s immediately paired up with Riggs, whose moth-to-light attraction to danger and minimal concern for seeing tomorrow rankle the old dog. Investigating a drug-related murder, the two gradually overcome their differences and learn to work as a team, even starting to like each other by episode’s end.

This new Lethal Weapon really shines a light on how much the original magic of the film series simply isn’t replicable. You can recreate the building blocks of Lethal Weapon, but not the soul of it. The pilot was directed by McG, and you don’t forget it. Everything is shot so slickly, every set piece rendered a music video, that it all feels hopelessly facile. A couple of the action sequences—a bank robbery thwarted by Riggs and an expensive-looking car chase that crashes into a Grand Prix racetrack—are fairly solid for television, but nothing else about the episode clicks. It bears repeating that despite its darker overtones (contrasted with the lighter sequels), the original film was extremely funny, but none of the lines here are worth anything. Even a talented comedy veteran like Wayans can’t do much with the one-liners he’s handed (and no, he doesn’t get to deliver Roger’s catchphrase, or at least a network-appropriate version of it).

Crawford is the true miss here. Gibson made Riggs a real live-wire. He seemed genuinely dangerous and unstable. Crawford, with his quickly evaporating Texan accent and his ‘Chris Pratt, hold the charisma’ exterior, fails to make Riggs formidable, sympathetic or winning. Wayans fares better, because at least he has presence, but again, he can only do so much with the material he’s given. It’s also peculiar that Wayans hardly looks or conveys Roger’s advancing age. He doesn’t look a day older than he did when he was Homey the Clown, which is odd since the actor is 56. Glover, meanwhile, was actually ten years younger than his character in the original film, yet did a far more convincing job of playing over-the-hill.

Needless to say, the actors don’t possess the same chemistry as their predecessors. Few do, but that’s what makes this entire project feel so especially useless. You could make a cop-duo TV series easily, so why call it Lethal Weapon, other than to pillage a recognizable IP? When CBS did this exact same thing earlier this year with Rush Hour, it also seemed pointless, but less irksomely so because Carter and Lee don’t have the same iconic pull that these characters do. Riggs and Murtaugh are dear to us because they were embodied by those two specific actors with their unique, specific chemistry. You can’t simply slap their names on two other actors and expect the magic to return. Hell, the show doesn’t even bother to recreate the film series’ signature saxophone theme music, which could only have helped the situation. The TV incarnation of Lethal Weapon is as empty as reboots get. It’s a bomb under the toilet if ever there was one.
