Will got better, and when he did, we thought the best way to pull something good out of the situation was to get him to write a screenplay. Ideally we wanted to make a film that would be as funny, sad, and hopefully as honest as the experience we went through. As soon as the script was completed, it quickly became a passion project for all of us. It helped us come to terms with Will’s struggle as well as our own experiences.” 50/50 is the story of a guy’s transformative and, yes, sometimes funny journey to health. 50/50 draws its emotional core from Will Reiser’s own experience with cancer and reminds us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.

50/50 opens September 30th, 2011

Orlando Bloom Returns To The Hobbit

Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom has joined the cast of Peter Jackson's upcoming Hobbit movies -- even though his character, the elf Legolas, doesn’t appear in J. R. R. Tolkien’s original novel.

Jackson announced the casting in a Facebook post Friday.

“Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas," he wrote. "I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again.”

Jackson is currently directing the two-movie adaptation in New Zealand.

He helped catapult Bloom to stardom by giving him his first major film roles as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Looking back, Jackson wrote on his Facebook page,

"I look older — and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf."

The Hobbit movies, which have been in the works for 14 years, has faced a series of setbacks.

In 2005, Jackson filed suit against New Line Cinema, claiming he had lost revenue from merchandising, video, and computer games releases associated with The Fellowship of the Ring and was no longer attached to The Hobbit.

Three years later, director Guillermo del Toro signed on but dropped out in May 2010 due to scheduling conflicts.

Jackson was confirmed again as director in October 2010, but union disputes in New Zealand threatened to relocate filming to Europe. In January, Jackson underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer, delaying shooting further.

On March 21, it was announced that shooting had begun in Wellington, New Zealand. Jackson also posted two images of himself on his Facebook page hanging out on set.

Actors Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis are reprising their roles from Rings in the prequel, which centers on Bilbo (Freeman) finding the supernatural ring and passing it on to his nephew, Frodo (Wood).

The first of the two movies is planned for a December 2012 release and the second is expected a year later.

Michael Mann To Direct Film About 1967 Le Mans. Battle Between Ford & Ferrari

Michael Mann is in talks with 20th Century Fox to develop and potentially direct Go Like Hell, the real-life story of the famous competition between the Ford Motor Co. and Ferrari that led to Ford winning the Le Mans in 1967.

Ford was the first American car maker to win the world’s oldest car race, held in France. For years, Ferrari had dominated the contest.

Based on A.J. Baime’s book, the Fox project recounts how a young Henry Ford II — determined to infuse new life into his family’s company — decided to get into the European racing scene.

With the help of racer Carroll Shelby and Lee Iacocca, Ford built and designed a car that could take on Ferrari cars, known for their speed and style. They ultimately won the Le Mans, the world’s oldest car race that takes place each year in France.

Insiders say the initial idea is for Mann to develop the script.

"Cosmopolis" Robert Pattinson First Look

David Cronenberg‘s (Eastern Promises) daughter tweeted the first official picture from the upcoming film “Cosmopolis" Starring Robert Pattinson & Juliette Binoche. “Cosmopolis" is based on the novel of the same name by Don DeLillo.

The cast is rounded out by Jay Baruchel, Paul Giamatti and Mathieu Amalric.

Cosmopolis is the story of Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson), a 28 year old multi-billionaire asset manager who makes an odyssey across midtown Manhattan in order to get a haircut. The stretch limo which adorns the cover of the book is richly described as highly technical and very luxurious, filled with television screens and computer monitors, bulletproofed and floored with Carrara marble. It is also cork lined to eliminate (though unsuccessfully, as Packer notes) the intrusion of street noise.

Like James Joyce's Ulysses, Cosmopolis covers roughly one day of time and includes highly sexed women and the theme of father-son separation. Packer's voyage is obstructed by various traffic jams caused by a presidential visit to the city, a funeral procession for a Sufi rap star and a full-fledged riot. Along the way, the hero has several chance meetings with his wife, seeing her in a taxi, a bookstore, and lying naked in the street, taking part in a movie as an extra. Meanwhile, Packer is stalked by two men, a comical "pastry assassin" and an unstable "credible threat". Through the course of the day, the protagonist loses incredible amounts of money for his clients by betting against the rise of the yen, a loss that parallels his own fall. Packer seems to relish being unburdened by the loss of so much money, even stopping to make sure he loses his wife's fortune as well, to ensure his ruin is inevitable.

Ben Stiller Talks Zoolander 2

Empire talked to Ben Stiller about the trials and tribulations of bringing the much-loved comedy to the screen, as well as touching on the sequel. That’s right, Zoolander 2, ladies and gentlemen – now with extra-added Magnum.

So, the details: Boasting a strong European vibe, it’ll take place 10 years after Zoolander, with Derek and Hansel cast aside by an industry in which, “ten years is a thousand years. They’re both totally out of it and have to start from scratch.”

“And then there are things set up at the end of the first movie that we’re able to build on, like Derek and Matilda have a son, and Mugatu went to jail. There’s a lot there, I’m excited about the idea of doing it. It feels like it’s getting close to going.”

Close to going, you say? Really? Stuart Cornfeld, Stiller’s producing partner since Zoolander, seems slightly less optimistic about its appearance on the big screen, saying: “It’s hard to get any movie made. It’s frustrating, because I believe the script is incredible. It’s not just putting on those costumes again, it’s a great story to tell.”

“We’ve got what I consider to be the best comedy script I’ve read in years and years, with jokes that haven’t been told before,” he adds.

In other words, it’s all really, really, ridiculously good-looking.

George Lucas Talks Everything Star Wars

Back in 2005, George Lucas announced that the Star Wars universe would get two television shows: an animated show (The Clone Wars, which hit the big and little screen in 2008) and a live-action show set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

Now Lucas finally explains why the live-action show "sits on a shelf."

During an interview with G4TV, Lucas explained that 50 hours of a Star Wars television show are waiting ... for a new way of making movies.

Moviemaking is very expensive, and Lucas wants to bring the same quality to the television show, but at a fraction of the price. The good news is Lucas plans on revolutionizing the way movies are made, which WILL cut the cost to a fraction of what it is now.

Say what you want about the most recent trilogy, but Lucas has always been a leader when it comes to filmmaking technology: One of his companies, Skywalker Sound, has provided post-production sound services for over 500 movies and television shows; another one of his companies, Industrial Light & Magic, has created special effects for almost 300 movies.

Lucas also changed the way movies are marketed: He retained merchandising rights to Star Wars, and the toys, posters, comic books and all other Star Wars media (which made $510 million in sales in 2010 alone) have made him one of the richest men in Hollywood.

Lucas has his people working the problem, but until they manage to bring down the cost of production, the Star Wars television show sadly remains unobtainium in the foreseeable future.

Peter Berg's "On Freddie Roach" Coming To HBO

HBO Sports has picked up the Peter Berg-produced docuseries about famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach. The premium cable net has ordered six episodes of On Freddie Roach, with an eye toward an early 2012 bow.

Berg (Friday Night Lights) will direct and produce the series along with Jim Lampley, Sarah Aubrey and Michael Price. It is a co-production of Berg’s Film 44 and Atticus Entertainment.

“We are truly excited about this innovative new reality series that will allow HBO to partner with Peter Berg,” Michael Lombardo, president of programming at HBO, said in a statement. “Freddie Roach is an extraordinary person and many of our subscribers are familiar with his superior work in training some of the world’s premier fighters.”

The cinéma-vérité series is set at Roach’s Wildcard Boxing Club in Hollywood where he has trained famous fighters including Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Amir Khanand, Floyd Mayweather Jr., as well as celebrities such as Mickey Rourke.

“HBO’s enthusiasm in supporting a less conventional, verité style of storytelling is why they continue to create original and truly innovative programming,” added Berg.

Roach grew up in the ring. His father Paul Roach was a trainer who introduced his three sons – including Pepper and Joey – to the sweet science. They were known as The Fighting Roach Brothers. Freddie Roach turned pro in1978 and was trained by the legendary Eddie Futch. He retired in 1987 after showing signs of Parkinson’s disease. Roach is no stranger to HBO; he’s been seen in the corner for some of the network’s World Championship Boxing series. And his career and battle with Parkinson’s was recently chronicled on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.

The Roach project was originally in development at AMC where it was eyed as the net’s foray into reality programming. But it was not a fit creatively for the network, which instead picked up series about the Department of Homeland Security and real Madison Ave. ad men.

Matt Reeves To Direct This Dark Endeavor. Frankenstein Has A Twin

Let Me In director Matt Reeves has been signed to direct This Dark Endeavor, with Mean Creek writer/helmer Jacob Aaron Estes writing the script for Summit Entertainment. Summit just took a step forward in this contest. The film is based on the Kenneth Oppel novel This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein. It will be published this summer by Simon & Schuster, the first of a series.

In the Oppel novel, Frankenstein's twin Konrad is gravely ill. His brother seeks out a mysterious old alchemist to help him produce the Elixir of Life, a serum that will bestow the gift of perpetual health. You can't order this drink at a pub, and Frankenstein sets out on a dangerous adventure to find the elusive contents. He's accompanied by his best friend Elizabeth, who is sweet on Konrad. Things get complicated among the three of them.

Reeves, who also directed Cloverfield, adds This Dark Endeavor to two other projects he's working on. He signed recently to direct the Justin Cronin vampire novel The Passage for Fox 2000, and he's got a deal at Universal to write and direct a film based on the Ray Nelson short story 8 O'Clock in the Morning, about a man who awakens with the realization that aliens are all over the place and control society. Estes just completed The Details.

Gnomeo & Juliet is a 2011 animated family film based on William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. The film is directed by Kelly Asbury, and the two main characters are voiced by James McAvoy and Emily Blunt.

Gnomeo and Juliet

The animated tale Gnomeo & Juliet knowingly follows the quintessential star-crossed lovers tragedy Romeo and Juliet, with the unexpected twist of making the characters garden gnomes that can move when human beings aren't watching. Though Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) belong to feuding garden-gnome families, they meet and fall in love. But the clans' shared animosity is exacerbated when Tybalt (Jason Statham) dies in part because of actions taken by Gnomeo to defend a friend whom Tybalt was attacking. After getting some sage advice from a statue of William Shakespeare (Patrick Stewart), Gnomeo attempts to set things right, and win the heart of the lawn ornament he loves. The supporting cast includes the vocal talents of Michael Caine, Hulk Hogan, and Maggie Smith.
