TV Review: Marvel's Jessica Jones

Marvel finally does TV right.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) doesn’t much resemble a superhero, certainly not of the variety we’re accustomed to within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which she inhabits. She doesn’t have any cool weapons. Rather than a flashy, colorful costume, her day-to-day attire consists of a black leather jacket and a pair of faded jeans. She doesn’t even have a snazzy moniker, going solely by her rather prosaic (if alliterative) name. She’s not a scientist, a billionaire, a war hero, a secret agent nor a god, but a lowly P.I., snapping candids of cheating spouses and living out of a hovel of an office. She’s a hard-drinking, hard-screwing, hard-bitten cynic, about as far from Steve Rogers as any person could get. Yet she’s also “gifted,” as are so many in the Marvel Universe. Jessica possesses superhuman strength and resilience. She can’t fly, exactly, but she can jump very high, which is the next best thing. But Jessica does not think of herself as a hero, or much of herself at all. She’s resigned to her station on the bottom rung. She just wants to eke out a living and be left alone.

This is the eponymous hero of the latest Marvel/Netflix collaborative series, Jessica Jones. As with the previous Netflix series, Daredevil, Jessica Jones aims to explore a darker, seedier subsection of the Marvel world, more street-level and less dependent upon $200 million worth of razzle-dazzle and spectacle. Jessica is also based out of Hell’s Kitchen, the very same sketchy NYC neighborhood that Daredevil’s Matt Murdock haunts, and is prone to the same bone-crunching violence and adult-tinged content that infused Murdock’s exploits. Jessica Jones is a dark show, but it parts company with Daredevil by being extremely well paced. The earlier series quickly lapsed into a repetitive slog, where Jessica Jones keeps building steadily, ratcheting up the stakes from episode to episode. The result is a thrilling, smart series, the very first television show from Marvel that is both mature and engaging at the same time.

When we first meet Jessica, she is taking cases handed down by Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss), a steely ballbuster of an attorney. Jessica’s only friend is Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) a former model and child star who now hosts a popular radio talk show, and whose abusive harridan of a mother (an unrecognizable Rebecca De Mornay) took Jessica into her home after our heroine lost her parents at a young age. Jessica’s tormented spirit is largely attributable to her time spent under the thrall of Kilgrave (David Tennant), a supervillain with the unique skill of making anyone to whom he speaks unquestioningly obey his every command. Kilgrave put the whammy on Jessica, making her his unwilling love slave for a time and ultimately forcing her to kill a woman. Jessica broke free from Kilgrave’s spell after a bus crash presumably killed him, but the psychic wounds she carries from her captivity remain open and raw. When a missing-person case turns up a girl under Kilgrave’s homicidal influence, Jessica is forced to once again confront her manipulative aggressor.

One factor that separates Jessica Jones from the previous Marvel television series is that is actually has something powerful to say, specifically about the nature and cycle of abuse. There’s a clear metaphor at play where Kilgrave stands in for men who abuse, manipulate and subjugate women, treating them as playthings and servants rather than as people. This extends to a subplot about a support group Jessica joins for people controlled by Kilgrave. The group might be Kilgrave-specific, but it functions as a stand-in for abuse sufferers en masse. A major component of Jessica Jones is how Jessica forces herself to muster up the courage to not only confront Kilgrave again, but to sever his hold over her, to no longer allow him into her head and to take back control of her tattered life. Try looking for anything this astute and resonant on the atrociously written, bad-Saturday-morning-cartoon-caliber Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Ritter has proven herself time and again as an actress adept at both comedy and drama, but she’s a revelation here, alternately making Jessica heartbreaking, caustic and tough. Taylor, who has never shown any such previous adeptness, surprises with a spunky and winning performance. But the actor who packs up Jessica Jones into a box and walks off with it is Tennant, who instantly takes the reigns as the best Marvel villain thus far, big screen or small (not that lofty a feat, since he really only has Loki for competition). Tennant brings much of the same energy and tics that he brought to his interpretation of Doctor Who, such to the point that Kilgrave often feels like an evil version of the Doctor. Tennant is frightening when he needs to be, but also makes the villain occasionally charming and often hilarious. The series gets a good deal of mileage out of how much wicked fun Kilgrave has with his power, blithely ordering adversaries to bash their heads into wooden beams or instructing an annoying passerby to stand across the street and stare at a wall “forever.” Also extremely funny is the character’s irreparably damaged moral compass, as when he averts a hostage situation at Jessica’s urging and then tells the assailant to put the gun in his mouth, genuinely believing that to be the proper thing to do. Tennant is a dynamo as this character, and his contribution is what elevates Jessica Jones even further into the stratosphere.

The show also strikes a nice balance on Jessica’s powers. She’s superhumanly strong and fast, but not indestructible or insurmountable. She taunts a gun-wielding opponent about how a bullet will have little effect on her, but it still does some damage. She can still bleed, and at one point, enough henchmen with cattle-prod Tasers are enough to effectively subdue her. While she can defeat mere mortals one-on-one without breaking a sweat, she’s no Hulk or Thor, and is probably even a few clicks down from Cap. Hell, she isn’t even the mightiest person on her own show. That would be Luke Cage (Mike Colter), another “gifted” person blessed/cursed with indestructible skin. Cage strikes up a palpable romantic chemistry with Jessica before cruel fate (and crueler Kilgrave) makes the two adversaries. But when it comes to an out-and-out throwdown, Cage has the upper hand. Having a hero who’s strong yet still physically vulnerable makes Jessica intriguing in a climate where superhero imperviousness seems to be the law of the land.

Jessica Jones does have some blemishes on its otherwise sterling exterior. Jessica has an ally in Malcolm Ducasse (Eka Darville), her kindhearted junkie neighbor, but the character feels superfluous, not making much of an impression and not even deployed as comic relief. Similarly, a cop (Wil Traval) who regularly ping-pongs between murderous foe and kindhearted ally is a problematic character that the show never quite gets a handle on. And a subplot about Hogarth callously conspiring against her cuckolded wife (Robin Weigert, Deadwood’s Calamity Jane) doesn’t really go anywhere worth going given how much attention it receives. The season finale also elicits a bit of a shrug after all the propulsive momentum built up to get us there. On a much more minor note, the name “Kilgrave” is uttered with such unceasing regularity that it would inspire the world’s deadliest drinking game.

No matter. Jessica Jones is the first instance of Marvel’s television arm producing something on par with its theatrical output. More than that, it gives the world a great female superhero well in advance of both Wonder Woman’s and Captain Marvel’s cinematic debuts. The show’s noir trappings (abetted by Ritter’s wonderfully acidic narration) are exemplary, making it feel like both an old-fashioned detective story as well as less peppy Veronica Mars, and the brutal fight sequences have a kicky edge to them. Daredevil didn’t sell me on this grittier “Marvel After Hours” approach the way it did for many, but I now find myself jonesing for more Jessica.

Jennifer Garner Joining Bryan Cranston In "Wakefield"

Variety is reporting Jennifer Garner is starring opposite Bryan Cranston as his wife in the drama “Wakefield” with Robin Swicord directing from her own script.

Production has started in Los Angeles. Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn are producing through their Mockingbird Pictures banner with Broadway producers Wendy Federman and Carl Moellenberg.

The film is based on a short story of the same name by E.L. Doctorow — which is a retelling of a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, also called “Wakefield” — about a man who unexpectedly leaves his wife for an extended period of time.

Cranston revealed the project during a November interview on “The Howard Stern Radio Show,” explaining that he will play a married Manhattan lawyer who sees a raccoon in the attic of his home and winds up staying in the attic for several months due to a nervous breakdown. He also said his character will become romantically involved with a younger woman at some point in the story.

Cranston’s character will depart his family after being left stranded and recalling a fight he had with his wife the previous night. When he arrives at home, he decides not to enter his house but instead climbs the stairs of his carriage house-turned-garage up to the attic space — and lives there for the next nine months, emerging only at night and rummaging through trash cans for food while watching his family adjust to life without him much faster than he expects.

Curtis and Lynn partnered under the Mockingbird Pictures banner after producing “Albert Nobbs,” which was nominated for three Academy Awards. Mockingbird produced “Last Days in the Desert,” which premiered at Sundance this year, and Rob Spera’s “The Sweet Life,” which is currently in post-production.

Federman and Moellenberg have together won 11 Tony Awards for Broadway productions including “Hair,” “Spring Awakening,” “War Horse,” “Pippin,” “Death of a Salesman” and “Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.” They also produced last year’s Broadway hit “All the Way,” for which Cranston won a Tony as Lyndon B. Johnson.

“We joyfully supported Bryan on his way to the Tony stage with ‘All the Way,’ and we are looking forward to joining him on this cinematic journey with ‘Wakefield,’” said Federman and Moellenberg.

Garner is starring in Robbie Brenner’s “The Tribes of Palos Verdes” and will next appear in Columbia’s “Miracles from Heaven” and in Barry Sonnenfeld’s “Nine Lives.”

Cranston is currently starring in “Trumbo” as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, directed by Jay Roach, and will be seen in drug-sting drama “The Infiltrator.” He won four Emmys for “Breaking Bad.”

Swicord’s screenplay credits include “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Jane Austen Book Club,” which she also directed.

Steven Spielberg Says No One Can Be Indiana Jones But Harrison Ford

Talking recently about Star Wars and his career in general, Harrison Ford has said he’d be happy to work on another Indiana Jones film. And according to Steven Spielberg, no one else could or should replace Ford as the iconic adventurer.

Speaking with Screen International, Spielberg made his feelings clear. “I don’t think anyone could replace Harrison as Indy, I don’t think that’s ever going to happen,” he said, denying recent rumours that someone such as Chris Pratt could take over the fedora and whip. “It’s certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford.” Which doesn’t rule out someone else playing a Jones family member again after a film we’re reliably informed was called Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, but which mysteriously escapes our memory for now.

Of course, while there has been plenty of chatter about a new Indy outing, and with Kathleen Kennedy and the Lucasfilm team eager to make more movies from their big properties for Disney, nothing will get made unless Spielberg wants to. It does appear that he’s still eager, however. Why? “Because there are more adventures out there than films,” he says. “So as long as there’s more adventures out there, I’ve got a bullwhip, a fedora, a leather jacket and a man on a horse who knows how to get the job done.”

Thor: Ragnarok Has Found Its Writer

THR is reporting Stephany Folsom has been tapped to work on the script for Thor: Ragnarok.

It’s the first move on the Marvel Studios project since early October, when Taika Waititi, who co-wrote and co-directed the vampire spoof What We Do In the Shadows, came on board to helm the project, the third installment of Marvel’s Thor movies.

Chris Hemsworth will be back as the Norse god of thunder for the film that is also due to feature a team-up with the Hulk.

Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle previously worked on the script.

Folsom is the latest female writer to be brought into the Marvel stable, whose stock in trade is a genre that many think of as male-oriented. Marvel already had Nicole Perlman as a writer on Guardians of the Galaxy and she is now writing Captain Marvel with another female screenwriter, Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).

Folsom is best known for her 2013 Black List script 1969: A Space Odyssey or How Kubrick Learned to Stop Worrying and Land on the Moon. The drama earned high marks in its alternate-history telling of a publicist that convinces filmmaker Stanley Kubrick to work with NASA in order to fake the moon landing.

Folsom also wrote script for The Princess of North Sudan, Disney’s unique princess tale inspired by the true account of an American man claiming a territory in Africa and proclaiming himself and his family its royal rulers.

Blu-ray Review: 'Trainwreck'

The hilarious Amy Schumer/Judd Apatow comedy looks and sound great, but needs an edit.

Review by Matt Cummings
If there's one thing that can be said about the Amy Schumer/Judd Apatow comedy Trainwreck, it's that it lovingly shows how hot-mess relationships can come clean and eventually endure. Unfortunately, its long runtime reduces what could have been the comedy of the year. At least the home release more than makes up for its failures in story, with great audio/video and a deep collection of supplements. The Movie - 4/5
As a child of divorce, Amy (Amy Schumer) has been raised to believe that "monogamy isn't realistic," leading to a series of one-night stands that could establish a record in New York City. Prone to drinking, swearing, and generally making bad choices, Amy is a hot mess, until she meets the orthopedic surgeon Aaron (Bill Hader), as calm and normal as they come. Soon, Amy begins to fall in love with him, appreciating his down-to-earth style even though he rubs elbows with some of the finest athletes in sports (including LeBron James). But when a death in family further separates Amy from her sister (Brie Larson), Amy's relationship also takes a plunge, sending her on a downward spiral that only she can pull herself out. Trainwreck features some of the best comedy of the year, allowing Schumer and several SNL alums the chance to strut their creative stuff. In many ways, we're witnessing comedic mastery unfold in many scenes, with Schumer directing traffic like a skilled cop. Her performance pops off the screen, as if her debut was just itching to get out. She is a breath of fresh air: larger than most wafer-thin actresses in Hollywood these days and missing their overly stylish perfection, Trainwreck paints Amy as horribly-flawed with a relationship phobia as big as New York. This might sound like I'm knocking her down, but it's quite the opposite. I appreciate her for those perceived shortcomings because it gives Amy a more realistic bend, especially when she's on her way down. Schumer is also hilarious, sporting dresses so short they look like she's missing pants and behaving quite out of control when it comes to sticking around after getting laid. Hader proves that he can be a likable leading man, and that his time on SNL was well-spent. He should quickly become the poster boy for Apatow's laugh-out-loud comedic blueprint that makes today's Rom-Coms more palatable for guys. My other favorite is the least likely: LeBron James succeeds (as well as an athlete comedian can) and is actually funny in the several scenes between he and Hader. His overly sensitive persona as a man obsessed with Aaron's happiness is pitch perfect and never seems to go overboard. Tilda Swinson plays Amy's socially out-of-touch boss with the sort of jerk perfection you've come to expect from her, while the SNL troupe that includes Vanessa Bayer and Colin Quinn have their moments in the sun. Director Judd Apatow does the best thing he can do with the script from Schumer, allowing her to 'McCarthy' it with plenty of ad-libs while keeping the predictable story intact. Yes, we all know how this is going to play out, but it's the comedy and performances that outweigh the sense that we've seen this before from other Apatow films like This is 40. But allow me to be clear: Apatow has got to learn how to edit his movies. At 125 minutes, Trainwreck is way too long; the ending is really two (or even three), prancing beyond its effectiveness for additional laughs without realizing its original intent. There's examples of that all over the film, and it absolutely reduces my appreciation for it. Apatow could be the John Hughes of our time, bringing 40-somethings along for the ride while effectively portraying all the problems long-term relationships encounter. Instead, he consistently forgets that comedy is sometimes better in smaller doses, almost as if he thinks he's got something to prove. The Video - 4.5/5
Trainwreck arrives via Universal with a very good MPEG-4/AVC transfer. It appears the film was shot using traditional methods and then upgraded to 1080p, but you'd never know it. Grain is fine but never interferes with color, depth, or clarity. Skin pores, wrinkles, and individual strands of hair can be easily seen, while sets show chips in paint and even spaces between boards at MSG. Colors and skin tones are lifelike, with blacks and shadows playing nicely with each other. There's zero evidence of banding, aliasing, or edge enhancement, further demonstrating Universal's unswerving commitment to all of their films regardless of genre, not just a few select tentpoles. The Audio - 4/5
Like a well-hung man, Trainwreck's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack rises to the occasion. Music plays a large role in the film, and its bass-heavy beats are carried through quite well in all speakers. A film like this doesn't usually carry a lot of environmental sounds, but what is presented does a good job of immersing the listener. It's not a and office place din. A basketball court sequence in chapter 11 brings the squeaky shoes, weighty dribbles, and mildly reverberating dialogue to life. General dialogue enjoys firm center placement, precise articulation, and consistent prioritization. The track doesn't have any "wow!" moments, but it's quite good at conveying all of the film's basics and intricacies alike. The Supplements - 4.5/5
Trainwreck contains a large and diverse set of extras, including a commentary track. There are also two versions of the film: the Theatrical Version (2:04:45) and the Unrated Version (2:08:46). Some items here are only in 480i, but that's acceptable, given the sheer amount of offerings and the space considerations on a BD.
  • Audio Commentary: With Director Judd Apatow, Writer/Star Amy Schumer, and Associate Producer Kim Caramele: This is an entertaining and informative look inside the film. Schumer and Apatow sound like they had fun working on the project, as that energy comes out in this commentary.
  • Deleted Scenes: Nikki's Dream (available as V1-Plane Teeth [1:55] and V2-Japan [1:48]), Bar App (1:58), Amy Calls Kim (1:26), The Morning After (1:42), Ryan Phillippe (2:20), Percentage (3:41), Drunk Horse (8:46), Guys' Fantasy (3:16), Minivan Nightmare (0:54), Doctors With Borders (1:39), Amy Gets Grilled (2:03), Prostitute (3:02), Steven & Lorenz (4:50), Amy & Schultz (2:45), Goodbye (1:33), Happily Ever After (1:17), and Cleveland (1:12).
  • Extended/Alternate Scenes: Amy & Allister (1:21), S'nuff Pitches (6:53), Steven Sex (6:28), LeBron's Glasses (2:40), Breakup (6:06), The Doctor's Place (2:54), Lunch with LeBron (6:46), Baby Talk (4:44), Skeletons in the Closet (4:24), Amare's Post Op (2:24), Pleasure Chest (2:51), and Fired (1:49).
  • Secrets of the Wu (2:21): The actors discuss the importance of the Wu-Tang Clan in the film.
  • The Dogwalker (480i): One of the best parts of the film, the scenes from the film are put together into a Part 1 (2:06) and a Part 2 (2:01).
  • Gag Reel: These are also placed into a Part 1 (6:37) and Part 2 (6:03).
  • Line-O-Rama (1080p): Again, there's a Part 1 (5:18) and something called a Steven-O-Rama (2:51).
  • Directing Athletes: A Blood Sport (1080p): The various athletes who appear in the film discuss working with Apatow and the cats. Apatow discusses working with the athlete actors.
  • Behind-the-Scenes (480i): This is the only one I wish were 1080p, but instead we get a 480i version with various behind-the-scenes featurettes. Sections include Amy & Family (14:33), Dance (12:12), Cena (13:49), Norman (11:58), Tilda (4:10), Athletes (7:48), S'Nuff (4:31), The Dogwalker (3:48), Horse Carriage (7:04), Rapping with Method Man (2:12), and Norman & Method Man Talk Music (7:16). It's perhaps the best part of the package, but space considerations apparently required the lesser quality.
  • Trainwreck Comedy Tour: The cast and crew travel to pimp the movie. We see stops in Boston (1080i, 2:23), Toronto (1080p, 4:22), Toronto: Judd & Colin (1080p, 5:35), Chicago (1080p, 3:53), Seattle (3:14), and Los Angeles (4:46). There's also a radio special: SiriusXM Town Hall: Seattle (1080p, 53:12).
  • Red Band Trailer (1080p, 3:03): Our evaluation copy arrived as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo, with a voucher for a UV/iTunes digital copy. The Bottom Line - 4/5
The bigger question behind Trainwreck will be if audiences come to accept a sexually-available woman in the same way they accept a sexually-available man. The comedy is excellent, but its long runtime doesn't make an effective case for Amy's lifestyle. In many ways, a woman as prone to drinking and screwing as her should be in jail and without a lot of career options short of stripping and hooking. Had the story focused on this self-destructive behavior from the start, it would have made Amy's fall more realistic. Instead, it looks like someone fell off the wagon and hilariously screwed a ton on guys on the way down. The video and audio are exceptional, and the supplements deep; it's a solid buy, if you can get past the runtime(s). Trainwreck is rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, language and some drug use and has a runtime of 125 minutes. Discuss this review with fellow SJF fans on Facebook. Chadwick Boseman Talks Black Panther

With the first trailer for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finally online we got a quick glimpse at Chadwick Boseman in costume as Black Panther. If you were wondering quite how the man also known as T’Challa fits into the sprawling superhero slug-fest, Boseman has opened up to Entertainment Weekly on the subject.

Set to be introduced in Civil War ahead of his own stand-alone film in 2018, Black Panther will show up as more of a neutral party in the conflict over the superhero-registering Sokovia Accords backed by Tony “Iron Man” Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and resisted by Steve “Captain America” Rogers (Chris Evans), though he’ll lean towards Tony's side of the argument. Just don’t expect him to be wise-cracking as much as some of the others. “He’s definitely not the life of the party in this instance,” Boseman tells EW. “I think this is something true of the comic book character and the movie. You never quite know where he stands. There’s always a bit of concealing and mystery. So I think mysterious is more his boat. Not to say there’s not charm and he can’t be a ladies’ man and all that. It’s more like if there is humor, it’s more like James Bond.”

He is, however, not quite the settled and learned man found in the comics either. “In publishing, he is sort of this very wise and a sanguine figure who seems to know more than he lets on,” producer Nate Moore says. “I think this is Black Panther in his younger years, where he maybe is a little bit more fiery than I think how they write him in the comics because he’s very much in the nascent stages of being a hero. So that means he is probably more fallible than the Black Panther that you read in comics, but for reasons that are completely logical.”

He’ll also confront fitting into the world he and his people have suddenly been dragged into after years staying out of the various superhero scraps. “There definitely is a sort of tradition that he’s torn between, in terms of how things were done in the past and how things need to happen now in this new world,” says Boseman. “I think there’s perhaps a bit of a maverick there, and then there’s also a need to live up to traditions and his father’s legacy. And not even his father’s legacy, but the entire nation of Wakanda. I think those are the things you will see.” For more about T’Challa’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, head to EW’s site.
