James Bond To Become A Free Agent

The film, with a $250 million-plus budget , marks the last in a deal with MGM, which is expected to court many distributors as a major franchise could change hands. James Bond is about to become a free agent, setting off a scramble among studios eager to win distribution rights to one of Hollywood's few seemingly gold-plated franchise. Sony Pictures opens Spectre , the 24th official Bond movie, on Nov. 6 in North America (the Brits get an early look Oct. 26), as the 007 adventure chases box-office records established by 2012's Skyfall , which grossed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the biggest film in the series' 53-year history. With early tracking pointing toward an $80 million-plus domestic bow, the movie has Skyfall's $88 million debut in its sights. But even if the film proves a big success, as most believe it will, it could mark the end of the Sony/MGM collaboration . Spectre is the last in a two-picture deal that Sony struck in 2011 with MGM, which co

Sony Pictures & Paramount Pictures Skipping #ComicCon 2015

Look who else will not be attending Comic-Con 2015. Matt did a nice piece on why Marvel doesn't need Comic-Con . And now this news. According to Variety , San Diego’s lucrative fanboy convention will be missing some key players next month: Marvel Studios, home of the Avengers, won’t be dressing up for Comic-Con while Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures have also decided to skip the Hall H presentations. “It wasn’t a knock against Comic-Con,” one spokesperson explains, “the film cycles just didn’t allow it.” Sony and Paramount just didn’t have the fanboy material to promote, said sources, while Marvel, which last missed the confab in 2011, already unveiled its new wave of Avengers at a special fan event in October. Plus, cost of sending a number of movies to Comic-Con can also set back a studio a few hundred thousand dollars, so “why force the issue?,” one exec asks. Disney is expected to showcase its upcoming slate, which includes sequels for “Pirates of the Caribbean”

Sony's 'The Equalizer' Gets a Sequel

We discuss the announcement and what possible directions the series could take. Story by Matt Cummings Robert McCall is returning to terrorize a thug near you. Collider is reporting that the 2014 surprise hit The Equalizer is getting a sequel, courtesy of beleaguered Sony Pictures. The original, loosely based on the 1980's television series, followed retired agent McCall (Denzel Washington) as he took down Russian gangsters with clock-like efficiency. The movie also starred Chloe Grace-Moretz, who played a prostitute that McCall ends up protecting after she is brutalized by her Russian pimp. The film, directed by Training Day alum Antione Fuqua, was hailed for its hard-boiled, Hard R violence, but also because it gave Washington the perfect vehicle to breath new life into the British gentlemen spy. The result was a worldwide take of $200 million on a $55m budget. Those sorts of numbers make sense to Sony, so it was only a matter of time before they announced a se

Updated Marvel/DC/Fox Comic Book Film Timeline

Here's how the biggest entertainment news of 2015 affects the next five years. Story by Matt Cummings If you're feeling a little shell-shocked over the huge news about Spider-man finally joining the MCU , get in line. These days, comic book news is hitting us faster than a punch from The Flash and harder than The Hulk. With word reaching us about Spider-man, the entire Marvel release schedule has been upended , but it's also left a high-profile release completely off the list. Truth is, every Sony Pictures production of a Spider-man related property is now off the books, replaced with what appears to be a single universe shared between Sony and Marvel. But, we'd be in error if we didn't mention that there's still other comic book universes out there, starting with your friends at DC. Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is happening next year, and DC themselves are moving forward with a huge slate of films, both team-ups and individual stories.

Marvel's Release Schedule Shifts for Spider-man Addition

Here's how the biggest news of 2015 will affect Marvel Studios' release schedule for the next 5 years. Story by Matt Cummings As we reported on Monday night , fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just got the biggest news they could have hoped for in Sony Pictures' decision to share Spider-man and his villains with Marvel Studios. The deal is perhaps the biggest news of 2015, and could stand as the biggest entertainment news of the year, even with stories like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice in various stages of production. The questions on everyone's mind relative to Spider-man is multi-faceted: how will he fit in to the MCU? Will he appear in Captain America: Civil War ? And how does this affect Marvel Studios' release schedule as it was announced back in October 2014? While the first two questions are TBD, we do know the answer to the third question, because the other news regarding Spider-man is just as big. Not o

The Interview to Debut on Netflix...Soon

Does its release on Netflix change anything for Sony Pictures? Story by Matt Cummings Perhaps the most significant entertainment story of 2014 was one of its last: the decision by Sony Pictures to cancel the release of the comedy The Interview . This sparked a wave of controversy that hit social media like a 50' wave of guffaws and stunned reactions from people like Director Michael Moore to Actor Patton Oswalt. And although the film eventually saw theatrical release and did well in the VOD market, no one expected to see it on Netflix for at least a couple of months. That changed today when Variety and other outlets today reported that Netflix had agreed to stream the film with Seth Rogen and James Franco beginning January 24th. Sure, it's already made about $6m (at the time of this posting) from 581 theatrical locations, but its VOD went off the scale to the tune of $40m. The Netflix news answers one question: would Sony seek a Netflix release, just to squeeze

Will Spider-man FINALLY Join the MCU?

A recent report suggests a deal might have been struck. Story by Matt Cummings With the recent hack of Sony Pictures' servers , we've learned a lot about the inner workings of Hollywood. Some of it has been interesting and has actually yielded quite a lot of data on Marvel's relationship with the struggling studio. At the top of that is Sony's continued reluctance to allow Marvel to use Spider-man in its MCU. To Sony, the answer's always been, "You sold us the rights, and you'll have to wait until we're done with them." A Spidey reference almost made it into 2012's The Avengers , with Oscorp Tower slated to appear in the New York skyline before that plan was nixed. Now, a recent report suggests that Marvel might be one step closer to getting one of its prized properties back. According to a report by Latino Review, Sony and Marvel have agreed to bring Spider-man into the MCU, just in time for Avengers: Infinity War . We'r

Robert Rodriguez Will Direct Fire And Ice

Sony Pictures has acquired a big package that gives the studio a potential franchise. Robert Rodriguez will direct a live-action version of the 1983 animated film Fire And Ice . The film is Rodriguez’s homage to his friend, the late legendary animator Frank Frazetta, on whose works Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi based that original film. It’s a big buy for Sony Pictures at a rough time for that studio, and a deal that reunites it with Rodriguez; Columbia Pictures acquired the Sundance breakout El Mariachi, Rodriguez’s memorable debut. The intention is for Fire And Ice to be the birth of a fantasy adventure franchise, informed by the dreamlike worlds Frazetta poured into his paintings. Please Leave A Comment- Source- Deadline

Could Danny Boyle & Leonardo DiCaprio Team Up To Make Steve Jobs Movie

Moving fast to replace David Fincher on its highly anticipated Steve Jobs movie , Sony Pictures is in talks with Danny Boyle to direct the biopic of the late Apple Computer co-founder. Boyle is said to have approached Leonardo DiCaprio to star. As The Hollywood Reporter revealed earlier this month, Fincher fell out of the project due to his aggressive demands for compensation and control. Fincher had wanted Christian Bale for the title role, though the actor was not signed. The film is to be produced by Scott Rudin and written by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network), based on the best-selling biography of Jobs by Walter Isaacson. The Jobs film could mark a reteaming of DiCaprio and Boyle, the star and director, respectively, of 2000's The Beach. Neither has previously worked with Sorkin. The departure of Fincher dashed hopes of reuniting the team behind Social Network, which grossed $225 million worldwide in 2010. Please Leave A Comment- Source- THR

Karate Kid 2 Is On It's Way

Sony Pictures has locked Breck Eisner to direct Karate Kid 2 , the sequel that will bring back Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan . Harald Zwart directed the 2010 original, which grossed $56 million on its opening weekend and ended with $343 million worldwide. Eisner, most recently directed the gritty horror film The Crazies . It is an important film for the studio that has placed a premium in the care and feeding of franchises with global appeal. The original 1984 Karate Kid is a beloved film, but let’s face it, that crane deal at the end would never have worked, and this kid is way more believable as a martial artist. The Monuments Men Review. Film Utterly Disappoints, Playing Fast & Loose

The Monuments Men Review By: MattInRC There are two ways to view the ensemble historical drama The Monuments Men : the first is through the unfiltered eyes of the average moviegoer, interested in the genre and impressed by its stellar cast. The other way is to take a more realistic view of its rise from Oscar-sure-to-be to its odd February banishment. Regardless of how you look at it, the film utterly disappoints, playing fast and loose with its history and wasting every one of its emotional assets along the way. Based on Author Robert M. Edsel's account, the movie follows a group of American artists and designers as they struggle to preserve the world's greatest works of art while the final months of World War II draw to an end. The Nazis have been hording art and sculptures in the hopes of showcasing all of them in a Fuhrer Museum; but as the war turns against them, the Nazis decide to hide the precious works in mines across a battered Europe. Cue the conc

Second Trailer For Monuments Men

George Clooney and his Monuments Men have been pushed back, out of the Oscar release date tidepool and into a less awardsy February slot, and the movie's new trailer hints as to the whys and wherefores of that decision. This promo sells it as an unashamed, action-packed wartime caper with lots of Oceansy chemistry from its cast and a serious message worn lightly. Set in World War II, The Monuments Men finds an unlikely squad of recruits culled from museums, galleries and universities for a special mission in liberated Europe. They're tasked with braving the front lines of combat and stopping priceless works of art, architecture and other artefacts from being stolen or destroyed. Not only did they have to go up against the Nazis, but they also had to try to convince the Allied troops not to attack certain buildings: no easy task for a team of volunteers including art historians and curators. The cast includes Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujar
