Robert Rodriguez Approached To Direct "Deadpool" Film

Robert Rodriguez Approached To Direct "Deadpool" Film

We just found out that Fox has approached Robert Rodriguez to direct the upcoming film Deadpool staring Ryan Reynolds. Rodriguez has confirmed he has read the script.

"They sent me a script to read, [but] I've been really swamped with this other stuff," Rodriguez said. "I've not decided whether ... anything I do would be after 'Spy Kids' — that gives some breathing room. So whether or not I would help develop or not is the question right now."

And what did he think of the script? "It was really good," Rodriguez enthused. "It wasn't supposed to be sent out, it was one of those early drafts, they were probably like 'Robert just finished 'Predators,' let's see what he thinks at this early stage' ... I got an early sneak peek at it."

Rodriguez added that he is a fan of Ryan Reynolds continuing with the role and that he did a great job in working with the writers. Also, that the script calls for Reynolds' Deadpool to break the fourth wall and talk to the audience.

"He had some really great ideas. Ryan is cool," he said. "I liked his ideas and his passion for that project."

Del Toro Set to Write and Produce Haunted Mansion

Del Toro Set to Write and Produce Film for Disney

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – July 22, 2010 –Guillermo del Toro surprised the 6,500 fans gathered today at Comic-Con with the announcement that he is currently developing a new film for The Walt Disney Studios based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion…

“Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters – think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White,” said del Toro. “I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!”

“Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo del Toro,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey like they’ve never experienced before.”

Since August 1969, foolish mortals have dared to trespass on the macabre grounds of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. A hallowed landmark in Disneyland’s New Orleans square, it’s the dwelling place of 999 happy haunts dying to meet new visitors each day. The plantation-style of the mansion’s facade is a sweet deception for visitors. Inside, ghostly doom buggies line the hallways. Since its construction, the mysteries of the mansion have transcended the attraction with stories surfacing about horrifying encounters with the supernatural. Versions of the daunting edifice have been built at other Disney theme parks in Orlando, Tokyo and Paris.

Brad Pitt On The Set Of Moneyball

Brad Pitt On The Set Of Moneyball

Brad Pitt will be playing Oakland A's GM Billy Beane, Jonah Hill is set to play Paul DePodesta and
Kathryn Morris is slated to play Beane’s second wife who “loves baseball as much as her husband, so she understands and shares his passion for the game”

Scripted by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, production starts in L.A.

Based on the book by Michael Lewis, here is the synopsis:

“The Oakland Athletics have a secret: a winning baseball team is made, not bought. In major league baseball the biggest wallet is supposed to win: rich teams spend four times as much on talent as poor teams. But over the past four years, the Oakland Athletics, a major league team with a minor league payroll, have had one of the best records. Last year their superstar, Jason Giambi, went to the superrich Yankees. It hasn’t made any difference to Oakland: their fabulous season included an American League record for consecutive victories. Billy Beane, general manager of the Athletics, is putting into practice on the field revolutionary principles garnered from geek statisticians and college professors.”

New Image Of The Buffed Out Thor

New Image Of The Buffed Out Thor

When Kenneth Branagh walked through the doors of Marvel Studios to discuss directing Thor, executives greeted the Brit with two questions.

The first was a polite "How are you doing?"

The second was whether Branagh had ever been to Comic-Con.

"I think they were warning me," says Branagh, known more for his adaptations of Shakespeare than superhero stories. "They said to brace myself, that I'd never seen anything like it."

Not unless Branagh spends much time dressed as Chewbacca. But if you're making a movie about heroes with a predilection for capes and spandex, you had better be prepared to face the critical eyes of Comic-Con, the nation's largest gathering of fanboys, Twilight moms and all variants of geeks in between.

The four-day San Diego convention, which kicks off Thursday after a preview Wednesday, will draw more than 125,000 pop-culture fanatics of film, television, comic books and video games. And without an Iron Man, Dark Knight or Spider-Man to salivate over, fans are drawing a bead on Thor, which heralds Marvel's next wave of crime fighters, which will include Captain America and The Avengers.

"Nobody believed in us when we brought Iron Man here," says Marvel chief Kevin Feige. "They said we were bringing our B-team in. I think we've proved that there's no such thing. If you can impress Comic-Con fans, you're in the big leagues."

The convention, which enters its 40th year, has become one of Hollywood's most important showcases. Films such as Avatar, District 9 and Alice in Wonderland flew from last year's convention with a vapor trail of geek blessings, and all became hits. Those films that evoked shrugs —9, Drag Me to Hell— met grimmer fates.

"It's a bit scary, the power and devotion they have," says Chris Hemsworth, who plays the titular Norse hero in the film scheduled to arrive in May. "A couple of months ago I was feeling secure and went online to see what people were saying. Some people loved we were doing a movie; some people already hated it. I'll never read comments again."

He won't need to. The Comic-Con crowd isn't afraid to be heard. While festivals such as Toronto and Sundance showcase the people who make films, Comic-Con showcases the people who watch them.

"Their tastes define the marketplace," says director Jon Favreau, who introduced both Iron Man films at "The Con."

"I think the trick (to winning over fans) is to love the material as much as they do," he says. "If they know you're a fan, too, you're going to be fine."

Smallville And The Rebirth of Superman By Jonathan Cyfer

Smallville And The Rebirth of Superman
By Jonathan Cyfer

As just about all the superhero loving world knows, this coming Season of Smallville will be the last season. Depending on your level of Smallville "fanhood", your response to this news probably ranges from some minor sadness to virtually suicidal depression. The silver lining in the cloud of Kryptonite is that Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight) is at the helm of the Superman reboot film: Superman: The Man of Steel.

So Smallville will end in Spring 2011 and the new Superman film will be released the following year. This begs the question of just how connected the two projects are.

If you've watched the Smallville series and the Christopher Reeve Superman films, you know that a lot of the elements from the films made their way into the Smallville mythos. For instance, crystals seem to play an important role, and the Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic continues to ring with the voice of Jor-El. There's still an expectation that, like the Clark in the first Superman (1978) film, the Clark of Smallville will need to spend some training time in the Fortress prior to donning his red and yellow cape and officially entering the world as everybody's favorite hero.

Admittedly, Smallville has borrowed from long decades of comic book lore, introducing members of a fledgling Justice League of America, the futuristic Legion of Super Heroes, and versions of John Jones, the Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, and even a much less lethal incarnation of Doomsday. Over the past nine years, Smallville has become the nexus of just about every element of the Superman legend you could imagine, as well as creating its own, unique canon and characters (whoever heard of Chloe in relation to Superman before the show began?).

Now that Smallville is going the way of the rest of Kansas, as seen from Dorothy's point of view as she goes up, up, and away in a local tornado, how much of the Smallville legacy will be imported into the 2012 Superman film?

If I were King and got to decide, I hope not much. Here's why.

After a decade of Smallville, a tremendous amount of material, details, minutiae, and trivia has built up as part of the show. As fans of Star Trek, Star Wars, and any other long running and popular fantasy saga can attest, the more stuff you have to manage, the harder it is to keep everything consistent. Just look at how difficult it was for Star Trek to keep vulcan mating practices in line. There's a tremendous variation between how this was originally handled in the STTOS episode Amok Time and how it ended up being enacted by T'Pol in Star Trek: Enterprise. Even Captain Archer's prototype starship had technology (a view screen for instance) that, according to the STTOS canon, shouldn't have existed.

If you try to actively plug in some of the details from Smallville into the reboot film, and keep all of the other information internally consistent, you end up putting the film makers in a straight jacket. It's would be a wonder if they could even breathe, let alone come up with an original, unique, and truly creative rendition of the story of the Man of Steel.

The reason Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008) worked and worked very well, was because they weren't locked slavishly in to pre-existing canon. Oh sure, there were a lot of familiar elements, but Nolan was free (how free, relative to the dinosaurs actually running the WB studio, we'll never know) to remake Batman in his own image. If Nolan doesn't have that same freedom for the Superman film, it will belly flop with the same, sickening splat as Superman Returns (2006), and nobody wants that, not even the studio (successful films make money…flops do not).

I'm sure there'll be room for a little bit of homage to both Smallville and the previous Superman films and, as in some of those prior films, the occasional cameo appearance will add some spice. Inserting Tom Welling (assuming he won't actually be playing Clark in the movie) into any section of the film for 30 seconds will undoubtedly create an all but orgasmic response in the collective Smallville fan base. Just don't overdo it and especially, don't camp it up.

I know some of you are probably sticking pins in your little Jonathan Cyfer doll right now because I don't support a direct transition between the end of Smallville and the beginning of the Superman film, but just as Smallville started out as its own entity (meteor freaks, Chloe Sullivan, Lex living in a castle near Smallville), the Nolan film must have the same freedom. Smallville was a success because it broke outside the classic Superman mold and became something new and different, while incorporating and adapting the familiar. Superman: The Man of Steel must be liberated from canon in the same way and for the same reasons. Balancing the classic legend with a new and untried vision has its dangers, but if it worked for the Dark Knight, it can work for the Last Son of Krypton.

Aaron Sorkin To Direct John Edwards Film

Aaron Sorkin To Direct And Write John Edwards Film

Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has acquired the rights to the Andrew Young book about former presidential candidate John Edwards, "The Politician: An Insider's Account of John Edwards's Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down."

A TV and film mainstay, Sorkin will make his feature directorial debut with the project, which he will also write and produce.

Young first volunteered for the Edwards Senate campaign in 1998 and eventually became one of the North Carolina pol's most trusted confidants. During the 2008 presidential primary, Edwards began making unethical demands of Young relating to the candidate's mistress and her child with him.

Young's book was published by Thomas Dunne Books earlier this year.

"This is a first-hand account of an extraordinary story filled with motivations, decisions and consequences that would have lit Shakespeare up," said Sorkin. "There's much more to Andrew's book than what has been reported, and I'm grateful that he's trusting me with it."

Sorkin most recently wrote the screenplay for David Fincher's "The Social Network," which Columbia will release in October, and co-wrote the adaptation of the same studio's "Moneyball," which just began filming.

Movie Studios And Comic-Con

Movie Studios Build Hype With Comic-Con

When the seventh annual San Diego Comic-Con took place in 1976, the gathering of a few thousand fans was just what its name implied: a convention about comic books.

That year, however, Lucasfilm Ltd. set up a booth and held a slideshow presentation about a movie nearly a year away from release, "Star Wars."

More than 30 years later, the convention appears to be more and more a place where movie studios and television networks can follow in the footsteps of "Star Wars'" by giving hard-core fans an early look at upcoming releases.

Sometimes, it's a very early look. Walt Disney Pictures came to Comic-Con in 2008 with test footage from what was then referred to as "TR2N," a sequel to the 1982 cult classic "Tron," one of the first films to use computer-generated imagery. The special effects and appearance by Jeff Bridges, reprising his role in the original, made a big splash with the audience, even though the footage likely won't be in the final version of the movie, now called "Tron: Legacy."

"When we brought our 'Tron' test footage to Comic-Con, we knew that the crowd in Hall H would tell us, almost instantaneously, if there was an appetite for this film," said Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production. "The influentials in San Diego can generate global buzz, and we've been fortunate that they have embraced our project."

That reaction from Comic-Con more than 2½ years before its December 17 release has kept fans closely following the movie's progress. On Thursday, cast and crew from the film will return to the convention for the third year in a row and likely will present new footage to continue to build fan intensity around the movie.

It also will be "The Green Hornet's" second year of having a presence at Comic-Con. The movie won't be released until January, but last year star Seth Rogen was there to talk it up and show off the Green Hornet's car, the Black Beauty.

Jon Favreau is someone who can attest to the power of Comic-Con. The actor-director has been quoted as saying he was fairly nervous about how "Iron Man" would be received when its teaser trailer debuted at Comic-Con three years ago.

"In the Marvel universe, [Iron Man] is a top-tier character, but most didn't know who the heck he was," said Vic Holtreman of Screenrant.com, a panelist at this year's convention. "Favreau did such a good job of hitting it right."

After last year's return to Comic-Con to promote "Iron Man 2," Favreau will be back once again with "Cowboys & Aliens," his next movie that's still in production and won't be released for another year.

The studios behind "Iron Man," Paramount and Marvel, also will present a panel for "Captain America: The First Avenger," even though it is still a year away from release.

Movie studios aren't alone in this practice: Steven Spielberg's upcoming television series, "Terra Nova," had a panel scheduled for several days before it was canceled, reportedly due to a lack of footage available to show fans.

All of this might lead one to ask, why the rush?

"Marketing continues to expand, and the studios and distributors are looking for every opportunity to show upcoming movies to the most enthusiastic press and fan base, and Comic-Con is exactly that," said David Gross of Moviereviewintelligence.com. "Movie information, like all information, is accelerating in speed."

Social media, which is prevalent at Comic-Con, is a big part of that. "Movie reviews are flying around faster than ever," Gross said. "People are sending messages to their friends as they are seeing movies, and it's moving a lot faster."

This swift reaction can also apply to the early footage shown at Comic-Con, where attendees can send out instant feedback to anything they see there.

In the case of "Iron Man," which had its debut even before the popularity of sites such as Twitter, that can be a good thing.

At the same time, early positive buzz doesn't always translate to box-office success.

" 'Kick-Ass' was the most buzzed-about thing from Comic-Con last year," panelist Holtreman said. "After walking out of there, you would think it was gonna make $200 million." ("Kick-Ass" reportedly has yet to gross $50 million.)

Despite such cautionary tales, dozens of new movie and TV properties will be at Comic-Con this week, hoping to make a good impression on throngs of potential viewers not afraid to give feedback.

Gross calls this part of the democratization of information: "It's good for the consumer in the end," he said.
