Oscars 2013 Picks Are In. Do You Agree Or Disagree?

I want to thank MattInRC, April from Twilightish and of course Jorge from HiDefNinja in participating in this crazy idea Matt came up with. And I look forward to doing this again next year.

I have kept me answers very simple due to the fact I haven't seen 3/4 of the films nominated (That's why I have Matt).  And that is where Matt, April and Jorge have stepped up their game and include their explications to their picks.

So with out without further ado here are our picks for Sunday's Oscars.

Best Animated

SJF: Wreck-it-Ralph

Twilightish: Wreck-it-Ralph - While I don't believe that there were any EXCEPTIONAL movies in this category this year, I think this was the best out of the choices.

Matt: Frankenweenie – While my favorite animated film of the year in Hotel Transylvania wasn’t even nominated, Frankenweenie is a really great film about boys and their love for pets. There’s some great voice work here as well and the stop motion is like a breath of fresh 1960’s-era Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

HiDefNinja: Brave - This is probably one of the toughest picks for me…Pixar's first attempt at a female lead and a fairy tale was a homerun. Their take on the princess tale was so far from unconventional. Pixar also managed to create a world around Merida that was truly amazing, the Scottish like environment was simply stunning and paired with a good storytelling it should be an easy winner.

Best Supporting Actor

SJF: Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained

Twilightish: Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln - Absolutely fantastic in this role. I loved his character and what he stood for. I felt what he felt and he made me feel passionate about what he stood for in the movie.

Matt: Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln – Unquestionably Jones’s best performance of his career. His dry delivery (especially in Captain America) has always been enjoyable, but his portrayal of Thaddeus Stevens is top shelf. I do like others in this category, but Jones stands heads and shoulders above them.

HiDefNinja: Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained - Waltz' performance in Django Unchained was perhaps one of his best, if not the best yet. He completely embodied his character and played it with such ease that he left a lasting good impression.

Best Supporting Actress

SJF: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables

Twilightish: Anne Hathway, Les Miserables - I had heard a lot of criticism about Anne Hathaway playing this role (she can't pull it off etc) but I was blown away. I was really upset that she isn't in the movie longer.

Matt: Sally Field, Lincoln – Among my sleeper picks, Field is phenomenal and honestly deserved a Best Actress nomination. How AMPAS screwed that up is still beyond me.

Best Director

SJF: Ang Lee, Life of Pi

Twilightish: Steven Spielberg, Lincoln - We all know already that Spielberg is a genius, but he took 150 minutes of old men arguing in a court room and made it interesting and not boring.

Matt: Steven Spielberg, Lincoln – I don’t care whether Spielberg already has three Oscars: if you do something well, you shouldn’t need to give it up to someone else just to be fair. If that were the case, perennial losers the Cubs and Browns would have ‘won’ championships in my lifetime.

HiDefNinja: Steven Spielberg, Lincoln - This is perhaps the most unfair set of nominees, where is Ben Affleck? Where is Kathryn Bigelow? I don't think I'll ever understand the way the Academy works. If I have to pick someone from the list, it has to be Steven Spielberg.

Best Actor

SJF: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln

Twilightish: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln - He could not have portrayed Abraham Lincoln more spot on. It literally gave me chills. He had his mannerism's down to a T.

Matt: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln – If Lewis doesn’t win, I’ll march to Hollywood and demand AMPAS throw in the towel. A brilliant and career-defining performance, Lewis is Lincoln right down to his walk. Please AMPAS, have the appearance of intelligence.

HiDefNinja: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln - Daniel Day-Lewis was excellent in his role as Abraham Lincoln. There's not a lot to say here other than excellent is pretty tough to beat. The list of actors in this category is pretty good, but Daniel was a cut above the rest.

Best Actress

SJF: Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook

Twilightish: Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook - May the odds be ever in her favor.... She is absolutely one of the most talented actors of her generation and she deserves this.

Matt: Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty – This one is tough because Sally Field deserved equal credit for her Lincoln performance. But if I have to pick one, it’s Chastain. She’s tough and unforgiving as the agent that nails UBL – hail hot, smart chicks!

HiDefNinja: Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty - Her performance in Zero Dark Thirty was absolutely phenomenal. She embodied Maya as best as she could and what resulted was perhaps one of her best performances to date. I just cannot see an upset in this category; she should be able to add the Oscar next to her Golden globe pretty soon.

Best Picture

SJF: Life of Pi

Twilightish: Argo - Honestly is that who I WANT to win?? No. I just have a sneaky suspicion it is going to win.

Matt: Lincoln – Forget the fact that I’m a history teacher: Lincoln is one of the most important films of the 2010’s. Its themes of racism sadly echo in our time, and such films can become cathartic for a generation that’s more disjointed and divided than ever. Argo and ZDT are good but there’s nothing like Lincoln.

HiDefNinja: Argo - I have to admit, Ben Affleck hit a home run with Argo. The film was excellent to say the least. Argo is the clear winner here. Why Affleck doesn't appear in the best director list is beyond me, but Argo will definitely take it.

Twilightish Picks Explained

Best Animated Film:

Wreck It Ralph While I don't believe that there were any EXCEPTIONAL movies in this category this year, I think this was the best out of the choices. Being that I have 3 kids, this is the one category that I actually did see ALL of the movies. While I'm not thrilled for this to be my pick, It is my favorite out of the choices. As much as I am a Disney fan and I WANT to say Brave, I just can't go with it. It lacked so much to me and I found myself bored, (I know there are a lot of mixed feelings about that movie) Wreck it Ralph however had me pleasantly surprised! My kids loved it, and it is one we will be purchasing in a couple weeks when it comes out on bluray.

Best Supporting Actor:

Tommy Lee Jones- Lincoln He was absolutely fantastic in this role. I loved his character and what he stood for. I felt what he felt and he made me feel passionate about what he stood for in the movie. I thought his performance was totally moving. He totally earned this award.

Best Supporting Actress:

Anne Hathaway- Les Miserables Let me first make sure I spelled her name right... Okay good. FANTASTIC. I am in the minority of people that did not cry when I went to see this movie in the theater. I have never seen the play. I had no clue what the story was about. Besides hearing my girlfriends belt out the songs on road trips... that was all I knew of "Les Mis". I am however a huge fan of the Musical genre. How I haven't been exposed to this before I have no idea. I had heard a lot of criticism about Anne Hathaway playing this role (she can't pull it off etc) but I was blown away. I was really upset that she isn't in the movie longer. 'On my own' was brilliant! And she did that in one consecutive take! Awesome.

Most Deserved. Best Director:

Steven Spielberg- Lincoln Have you seen this movie? If you haven't... You should. I saw it twice in the theater. Yes I sat through 300 minutes of it, and I loved every SECOND of it. Maybe it's because I'm a history buff, but I was blown away by the telling of this story. We all know already that Spielberg is a genius, but he took 150 minutes of old men arguing in a court room and made it interesting and not boring.

Best Actor:

Daniel Day Lewis- Lincoln Again- WOW. As you can tell.... I loved this movie! I was 100% in awe of Daniel Day Lewis in this movie. He could not have portrayed Abraham Lincoln more spot on. It literally gave me chills. Some of the iconic speeches. He had his mannerism's down to a T. There is a scene towards the end of the movie where he is walking down a hallway and he even walked like him. (Lincoln was known for walking slowly). While I did thoghroughly enjoy Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables and I think he did a fantastic job... I think the Oscar really deserves to go to Daniel Day Lewis.

Best Actress:

Jennifer Lawrence- Silver Linings Playbook May the odds be ever in her favor.... Yep I said it. I'm not going to play her up. I don't think I need to. She is absolutely one of the most talented actors of her generation and she deserves this. She is real, Down to earth, and for that I like her. I hope the Academy feels the same way!

Best Picture: My PREDICTION- Argo Honestly is that who I WANT to win?? No. I am one of the few that could give a flying FLIP about this movie. But I just have a sneaky suspicion it is going to win. I would like to see pretty much any other movie win. Lincoln. Les Mis. Silver Linings. Why? Not because I don't love Ben Afleck.. Don't get me wrong, I really do love him. But the plot of this movie just did not impress me at all. I will watch it when it comes out. Which I think was Tuesday, Oh well, Maybe after my Disneyland vacation next week.

HiDefNinja.com Picks Explained

I am Jorge Flores and I am editor at Hidefninja.com and here are my personal picks for the upcoming Academy Awards.

Best Animated Film:

Brave This is probably one of the toughest picks for me, seriously, I love animation and year after year studios continuously pump a variety of good flicks to try and dethrone Pixar/Disney. The quality has gone better by miles in the last couple of years and for 2012 we saw some truly great animated flicks, including Pixar's attempt at a fairy tale involving a princess. However, among the list of nominees, Brave is my favorite to take the Oscar home. Why? Pixar's first attempt at a female lead and a fairy tale was a homerun. Their take on the princess tale was so far from unconventional, they created a character that was far from the norm and instead of create a defenseless princess they created a hero for little girls around the country. Pixar also managed to create a world around Merida that was truly amazing, the Scottish like environment was simply stunning and paired with a good storytelling it should be an easy winner. Frankenweenie, Paranorman and Wreck-It-Ralph were good on their own right and perhaps an upset is not really that farfetched.

Best Supporting Actor:

Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained Waltz' performance in Django Unchained was perhaps one of his best, if not the best yet. Every time he was on camera he was just great, the film might have been controversial, but every time someone mentions Django Unchained, Waltz comes to mind. He completely embodied his character and played it with such ease that he left a lasting good impression. The rest of the nominees are all excellent actors, but Waltz is the best choice this time around.

Best Director:

Steven Spielberg, Lincoln This is perhaps the most unfair set of nominees, where is Ben Affleck? Where is Kathryn Bigelow? I don't think I'll ever understand the way the Academy works, however, without taking any credit from the nominees the list is short. If I have to pick someone from the list, it has to be Steven Spielberg. Spielberg's Lincoln biopic was excellent, a few minor flaws, but nevertheless it does a great job paying homage to undoubtedly one of the country's greatest presidents to ever live. With Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee-Jones and Sally Field at Spielberg's disposal it's hard to imagine a letdown. Ang Lee's Life of Pi, David O'Russell’s Silvers Linings Playbook, and even Benh Zeitlin’s surprisingly well done film Beasts of the Southern Wild deserve a worthy mention. However, with a true master director at the helm and with a fantastic cast, Spielberg is above the rest in this list.

Best Actor:

Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln Daniel Day-Lewis was excellent in his role as Abraham Lincoln. There's not a lot to say here other than excellent is pretty tough to beat. The list of actors in this category is pretty good, but Daniel was a cut above the rest. Best Actress: Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty Her performance in Zero Dark Thirty was absolutely phenomenal. She embodied Maya as best as she could and what resulted was perhaps one of her best performances to date. I just cannot see an upset in this category; she should be able to add the Oscar next to her Golden globe pretty soon. Best Picture: Argo I have to admit, Ben Affleck hit a home run with Argo. The film was excellent to say the least. The film was put together very nicely, it had good pace, excellent acting, and the suspense had me at the edge of my seat. The other motion pictures in the list are great in their own right, but Argo is the clear winner here. Why Affleck doesn't appear in the best director list is beyond me, but Argo will definitely take it.

SNITCH Review. The Rock's Best Performance

SNITCH Review
By: MattInRC

The surprisingly deep Snitch features The Rock's best performance as...not The Rock.

Ready for a shocker? Dwayne Johnson is really good in Snitch, a powerful film about life in the drug trade. I know, it's Johnson (aka WWE's The Rock), but hear me out on this one.

Johnson (Fast Five) plays John Matthews, owner of a successful construction company, whose estranged son Jason (Rafi Gavron) is arrested after accepting a package filled with drugs. He's the victim of an undercover operation, hoping to nail small-time dealers who will in turn cough up other names for arrest. But Jason is neither willing to cooperate, nor turn in his drug-dealing friends, not because he's a hardened dealer, but because his morals won't allow him to do so. Matthews and his ex-wife Sylvie (Melina Kanakaredes) don't understand his defiance, but are more worried about his safety in prison, which forces Matthews into action. He uses his business connections to schedule a meeting with DA Joanne Kheegan (Susan Sarandon, Arbitrage), who initially refuses to help; undeterred, he concocts a brilliant plan to go undercover for Kheegan in exchange for Jason's release. Soon, Matthews is thrust into the center of a world he's never seen, filled with gun violence and the shadowy drug cartel leader Pintera (Benjamin Bratt), whose loyalty to local distributor Malik (Michael K. Williams) is only as strong as the drugs Malik can move through his little empire. Caught between saving his son, protecting his ex-con employee (John Berthnal) who set up the meeting with Malik, and the DA's growing pressure for an arrest, Matthews must take control to clear the table no matter the cost.

Snitch is an engrossing film, wrapping the viewer in a spiraling web of lies and broken promises that whirl and churn like a tornado of decit. The moment a deal is struck between Matthews and Kheegan, an event close to home results in a hastily-contrived addendum that forces Matthews deeper down the rabbit hole. The more he tries to help his son, the more desperate and deadly the situation becomes; and Johnson plays it masterfully. There were so many opportunities when The Rock could have exploded onto the screen to dispense with quick WWE justice, but former stunt-man-turned Director/Writer Ric Roman Waugh and Co-writer Justin Haythe (The Clearing) don't take the bait, keeping Johnson afraid of violence, uneducated about the darker world of the drug trade, and unskilled in dealing with the devious characters which infest it. As one deal is torn up for another, you can see it reflected on Matthew's face - he's clearly outmatched here, and the result sends Johnson into a new dramatic direction. To those who've followed his career, he will always be The Rock and the muscular Hobbs in Fast Five, but now he's Dwayne Johnson The Dramatic Actor.

Credit the deep and talented cast including Sarandon, Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan), and the equally-impressive Berthnal and Williams. Each actor excels in trying to screw the other so often that the audience can actually feel the noose tightening around Matthews, making us wonder who, if anyone, will finally be there to support him. Under the radar for so long, Pepper has suddenly appeared in two impressive outings, including Broken City, and his portrayal here is grayed to the point that we can't quite tell if he's good or not. Again, credit Waugh and Haythe for clouding our characters - which in turn ups that tension - then releasing just enough of it at points to keep us from going crazy. And while the story takes time to grow, it's all part of their plan to wrap us totally in Matthews' story.

I've been following Image Nation Abu Dahbi since my review for Richard Gere's The Double back in 2011; they've certainly come a long way, even though the former stunt-man Waugh isn't quite Steven Spielberg. Whether Image Nation can be the next Dreamworks is anyone's guess; but, for now Snitch is a great Winter film that joins other surprises Broken City and Gangster Squad. These will disappear once Spring gets underway, but that doesn't mean you should ignore them. Like 2011's Contraband or Safe House, Snitch is powerful and demands your attention; be ready for it, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. It's rated a surprisingly rated PG-13 for language, drug use, and violence, has a runtime of 112 minutes, and comes highly recommended.

Megan Fox Joins Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

For a while, it seemed as though the only news about the proposed new take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was about as welcome as someone pooping into their sewer living room. Fans were up in arms about proposed changes to the mythology, the writers kept changing and then it was delayed for yet more script work. Today, however, there was a much more surprising announcement: Megan Fox is on board.

“But!” we hear you cry, “good burghers of Empire! How can that be? Didn’t Fox and Bay have a huge falling out after Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen? With insults hurled back and forth?!” All of that is true, and please don’t call us burghers. It sounds rude.

Time, apparently, has healed the rift and Michael Bay broke the news on his website with a basic announcement. “TMNT: we are bringing Megan Fox back into the family!”

The Hollywood Reporter has tapped its sources and discovered that Bay and his former Transformers leading lady reconciled over several meetings, and that Turtles director Jonathan Liebesman won her over with storyboards and descriptions of the film, which will blend humans such as Fox (playing roving reporter and Turtle pal April O’Neil) with motion-captured heroes in a half shell.

They’re still looking to return to our screens on May 16, 2014, so it would appear that everything is up and running again. We can’t help but think that Fox might not be seen as the ideal choice by many fans, however…

Sir Ben Kingsley Iron Man 3 Poster.

And now, Empire has this exclusive Iron Man 3 poster, it's Mandarin's turn to look badass - something Sir Ben Kingsley does with ease.

Though his evil-sounding voice in the trailers below isn't oriental in the slightest, here The Mandarin's get-up and, well, sense of feng shui definitely has an Eastern vibe. Note the elaborately trimmed coat and liberal use of joss sticks, as well as the Chinese Dragons both on the walls and and standing proudly on the floor.

As for the camo gear and army boots, that's probably something to do with him being the leader of an international terrorist organisation and as such, believing in a certain amount of discipline. Then there's a Captain America-like combat helmet with holes in it, which is probably just there to look intimidating (and hold incense, naturally).

Ender’s Game New Image. What's For Lunch?

With the film now ploughing through the post-production process ready for an October release, sci-fi novel adaptation Ender’s Game creeps ever closer. Today a new image from the film, focusing on Asa Butterfield’s Ender Wiggin and Hailee Steinfeld’s Petra Arkanian has emerged online via fan site Enderwiggen.net.

Ender’s Game, drawn from Orson Scott Card’s novel, takes place in the near future, where Earth is under threat from a hostile, insectoid alien race called the Formics. After two devastating attacks, the world’s forces have rallied to defend against the next, setting up Battle Schools to pick and train the most gifted children in the art of war.

One of those, a shy but strategically talented lad named Ender, is plucked from school and quickly earns the respect of his peers and senior officers, including Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and wartime legend Major Rackham (Ben Kingsley). Of course, it’s not as simple as that – nothing ever is in wartime – and soon Ender must make sacrifices as he enters an epic battle that will determine the future of the human race.

The pic finds the kids in the mess hall between lessons, where we learn that we should all buy stock in companies that make plastic lunch trays.

Documentary film "Legends of the Knight" explores the inspirational impact of Batman and the power of heroic storytelling.

The trailer for the new documentary film "Legends of the Knight" debuted online on Thursday.

The not-for-profit film collects the stories of Batman fans around the world whose lives have been significantly impacted by the legends and tales of the Dark Knight.

"Batman has become contemporary mythology," producer/director Brett Culp said. "We want to show how enduring stories like this shape us. Our goal is to inspire everyone on the planet who loves Batman to embody his spirit, engage with the world, and make a difference. Together, we are Batman."

Culp is a life-long Batman fan. Over the past year, he and his team have filmed stories in 12 cities, recording 48 interviews. They captured the stories of individuals whose love of the Dark Knight has inspired them to overcome devastating obstacles, to motivate and encourage young people, and to contribute to their communities.

Well-known Batfans who appear in the film include:
• Michael Uslan - executive producer of "Batman", "Batman Begins", "The Dark Knight", and "The Dark Knight Rises"
• Denny O'Neil - legendary Batman writer

"Human beings have always been stirred to greatness by the tales of heroes," Culp said. "We connect with Batman because he is the super hero with no super powers. Just as he has committed himself to making the world better, we can dedicate ourselves to a noble cause and make a difference. This type of inspiration is a core function of storytelling in society."

The production team for "Legends of the Knight" is now raising funds through Kickstarter to finish the film. The 30-day funding campaign gives supporters of the project the opportunity to pre-order copies of the finished film and other incentives as a way of funding this documentary project.

The campaign raised nearly $5,000 in pledges in the first 12 hours.

Dan's story and character is unlike anything I have developed before, so I wait with intrigue as we begin to reveal more details about the ANNIHIILATOR franchise and to hear what audiences think as they immerse themselves into his world through the film. Bruce Lee Origin Story On The Way

QED International and banner Groundswell Productions are aiming to tell a Bruce Lee origin story with Birth of the Dragon, tapping scribes Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele to pen the tale.

Documentary Producer Claims Spike TV Stole Film Footage for 'I Am Bruce Lee' Dragon, according to QED and Groundswell, is inspired by the true-life duel between Lee and Wong Jack Man, who was China’s most famous kung fu Master. The no-rules fight took place in San Francisco in 1965, when the city’s Chinatown was controlled by Hong Kong triads.

The writers are using this true event as a jumping-off point for a wider-canvas action movie in which Wong and Lee team up to battle a band of Chinatown gangsters.

QED CEO Bill Block and Groundswell’s Michael London will produce the project along with Wilkinson and Rivele. Groundswell’s Kelly Mullen will exec produce.

"Stephen Rivele and Chris Wilkinson have taken a little-known chapter in the life of Bruce Lee and used it as a jumping-off point for a bold, exciting story about the making of an international legend,” said London in a statement. Wilkinson and Rivele are best known for their biopic work. The duo’s credits include Nixon, the 1995 drama directed by Oliver Stone that netted them an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay, and 2001's Ali, directed by Michael Mann. They also wrote Mercury, the story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, which is set up at GK Films with Sacha Baron Cohen to star.

Josh Boone To Direct The Fault In Our Stars

Josh Boone will helm Fox 2000's adaptation of the best-selling novel for "Twilight" and "Safe Haven" producers.

Josh Boone has been hired to direct The Fault in Our Stars, Fox 2000’s adaptation of John Green’s acclaimed best-seller.

Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, the producers behind The Twilight Saga and this past weekend’s Nicholas Sparks translation Safe Haven, are producing the project, which has a script by (500) Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber.

Whispers of Boone’s involvement surfaced over the weekend when a series of tweets connected Green, a big social networker, Boone and actress Shailene Woodley (The Descendants).

At this stage, however, sources say Woodley, who stars in Neustadter and Weber’s Now, has not been offered a role in the film (but she's in the running for the female lead as in Hailee Steinfeld).

Stars centers on a teenage girl stricken with terminal cancer who falls for a boy in her support group. The two form a bond as they deal with their illnesses.

The novel received unanimous acclaim, with Time magazine calling it the best fiction book of 2012. The studio is looking to go into production this summer.

Fault has deep meaning to Boone, who found solace in the book after he lost a close friend just prior to making his debut movie, the drama Stuck In Love, which stars Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connolly, Nat Wolff, Lily Collins and Logan Lerman. “John's book came along just when I needed it,” Boone tells THR in a statement. “It pierced my heart and helped me deal with my grief. I laughed and cried and was left with an overwhelming feeling of hope. That our lives matter, that the love and kindness we share with others reverberates long after we're gone.

“I feel the weight and responsibility to get this right and give his readers and devoted fans as pure a translation as possible … We hope to create a little infinity within this film that fans can revisit over and over."

Mark Hamill Talks Upcoming Star Wars Films

As the elements gather for Star Wars: Episode VII, talk (and a whole Bantha-drawn sled’s worth of speculation) has turned to which of the original cast might return. There have already been rumours that Harrison Ford is mulling a deal to reprise Han Solo, and Mark Hamill has gone on the record to say that there have been talks. Now the once – and possibly future – Luke Skywalker has had more to say, chatting with Entertainment Tonight.

“They're talking to us," Hamill says. "George Lucas wanted to know whether we'd be interested. He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. … I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts. We're in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed – on their end, not mine. They're more busy than I am."

Yes, just so we’re clear, these are meetings taking place, not contracts actually being signed. For once it’s a report from the horse’s mouth, and while you can lead it to water, you can’t necessarily make it drink. Or get it to the starting gate. Or… Oh, make up your own dreadful horse reference, though our lawyers would caution that it’s best not to bring up Findus.

As for Hamill’s thoughts on what direction the new movies should take? "I said to George that I wanted to go back to the way it was, in the sense that ours was much more carefree and light-hearted and humorous – in my opinion, anyway. And another thing I'd want to make sure of is are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that's around from the original returning? I want to make sure that everybody's on board here, rather than just one. I guess I'll have to tune into your show to figure out who's on board."

But where does he see the story going? Turns out it’s similar to what most of us have had in mind. "I'm assuming, because I haven't talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring – like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range as an influential character. … When I found out while making the original trilogy that ultimate good news/bad news joke – the good news is there's a real attractive, hot girl in the universe; the bad news is she's your sister – I thought, 'Well, I'm going to wind up like Sir Alec Guinness. I'm going to be a lonely old hermit living out in some kind of desert igloo with a couple of robots.'"

Christian Bale In Talks To Climb Everest

Universal Pictures and Working Title are teaming with Emmett/Furla Films on Everest, a mountain climbing disaster film that The Deep helmer Baltasar Kormakur will direct, with Christian Bale in talks to star. Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce with WT’s Liza Chasin, along with Evan Hayes. Emmett/Furla’s Randall Emmett and George Furla are in discussions to co-finance the film and join in a producing capacity as well. Justin Isbell wrote the most recent script draft.

Bale is in early talks to star in a tale based on the 1996 disastrous expedition to scale Mount Everest. Three different expeditions were hit by a sudden blinding storm and by the time it was all over, eight climbers died. The tale was first made famous by Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, his first-person account of being among the lucky ones to make it back down the mountain. This film will be sourced from various books and interviews with survivors.

There is another studio film entitled Everest, the one at Sony Pictures that has Doug Liman attached to direct a Sheldon Turner adaptation of the Jeffrey Archer book. That film is same mountain, different tale, as Tom Hardy is attached to play Sir George Mallory in his quest to be the first to the top of Everest in the 1920s.

Kormakur seems a strong match for what will be a rugged shoot. He’s coming off The Deep, an Icelandic fact-based drama that was shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and which told the story of one man’s unbelievable ordeal of being the lone survivor after a fishing vessel went down in icy waters. Everyone else perished from hypothermia and drowning, but one man swam for hours until he reached the shore, in temperatures no human should have been able to survive. Shooting the film was a cold and harrowing experience as well.

Kormakur made his Hollywood debut at Universal helming the Mark Wahlberg-starrer Contraband, a remake of Kormakur’s Reykjavik-Rotterdam. He most recently directed 2 Guns, the drama that stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. That film is also co-financed by Emmett/Furla in partnership with Universal. Emmett/Furla is separately engaged with Universal as the financier of Lone Survivor, the Peter Berg-directed adaptation of the Marcus Luttrell memoir about how Luttrell and his Navy SEAL team members fought to stay alive after being ambushed in Afghanistan in 2005 by Taliban forces during a covert mission in the Hindu Kush mountain region, where the team went to kill a terrorist leader. Universal will release that film.

Emmett/Furla was also backer of Motor City, a drama that had its plug pulled abruptly last year. There have been reports of lawsuits and when I asked Emmett about this after I’d heard about Everest, he would only say it was an unfortunate byproduct of a film being postponed close to its start date and that the situation is playing itself out.
