Win Tickets To See BATTLESHIP In San Francisco

Win tickets to see BATTLESHIP! We have passes to the special advance screening on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 7:00PM in San Francisco.

In Summer 2012, the battle for Earth begins at sea.

Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights) directs and produces BATTLESHIP, an epic-scale action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.

BATTLESHIP stars Taylor Kitsch as Lieutenant Alex Hopper, a naval weapons officer assigned to USS John Paul Jones; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of USS Sampson; global music superstar Rihanna, making her motion-picture debut as Petty Officer Second Class Cora Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, Hopper’s fiancée and a physical therapist specializing in the rehabilitation of military combat veterans; Tadanobu Asano, as Captain Yugi Nagata, Commanding Officer of the Japanese destroyer Myoko and Hopper’s archrival; and Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane, Commander of the Pacific Fleet.

Supporting the cast are Hamish Linklater as Cal Zapata, a scientist who mans the international satellite station in Hawaii that searches the skies for signs of life; Jesse Plemons as Jimmy “Ordy” Ord, a boatswain aboard USS John Paul Jones; New Zealander John Tui as the ship’s engine room expert, Chief Petty Officer Walter “The Beast” Lynch; and, in his professional acting debut, U.S. Army Colonel Gregory D. Gadson, a battalion leader who lost both legs in Iraq in 2007. Gadson plays Lieutenant Colonel Mick Canales, an Army combat veteran and double amputee who begins his recovery just as the alien attack begins.

Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval-combat game, Battleship is produced by Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro (the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises), Scott Stuber (Safe House, Couples Retreat), Film 44’s Sarah Aubrey (The Kingdom), along with Duncan Henderson (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Perfect Storm). The action-adventure is written by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber (Red).

Neighborhood Watch Red Band Trailer Or Whatever You Want To Call It

You may have already seen the trailer for Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and – hooray! – Richard Ayoade’s new comedy, Neighborhood Watch. But that movie doesn’t exist anymore. Or at least, the title doesn’t. Now the movie is simply called The Watch.

The premise has not changed – the foursome are still part of a neighbourhood watch group formed less from a sense of community responsibility and more from the chance to escape their dull suburban lives and enjoy a little bit of a power trip. But they get far more than they bargained for when they discover evidence that something decidedly otherworldly is going on.

Watch the trailer after the Jump...

While the whole alien element has been kept low-key, this latest promo blends the lads exchanging some predictably raunchy banter with some solid evidence that their seemingly quiet little ‘burb has been invaded by some non-human new residents.

As for the title swap, that’s been forced by the real-life shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida last February. You can see why a film that features a neighbourhood watch element going up against kids might consider the shift.

With Hot Rod director Akiva Schaffer working from a script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Watch will arrive in the US on July 27 and hits our screens on August 29.

Kellan Lutz To Play Tarzan

Constantin Film’s Tarzan movie has been quietly been in development but is now entering the casting stage.
Kellan Lutz, co-star of the Twilight movies, has signed on to star as the title character and Spencer Locke, perhaps best known for playing K-Mart in Constantin’s Resident Evil movies, has nabbed the role of Jane Porter. The movie will be a performance-capture 3D production.

Reinhard Klooss is directing the movie with Kloos also producing with Robert Kulzer.

Klooss, Yoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo wrote the script, which updates the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs jungle hero. For example, Tarzan’s parents, billionaire adventurers, are now killed in airplane crash rather than being marooned with their child. And the movie’s villain is the CEO of Greystoke Energies, a man who took over the company from Tarzan’s deceased parents.

In the script, Jane is the daughter of an African guide and is committed to the conservation and preservation of the African jungle. She eventually works with Tarzan to defeat the mercenary army of Greystoke Energies.
Lutz plays Emmett Cullen in the Twilight franchise, the last installment of which is set for release in November.

Locke is currently starring opposite Josh Hutcherson and Dane Cook in Detention, directed by music video helmer Joseph Khan, and recently wrapped indie drama Anatomy of the Tide.

We just put up Matt's review of the film, now let's see what RAMA thought of it.

Wow! Just Wow! I guess if you look up the word ‘awesome’ in the dictionary now, you can find the picture of THE AVENGERS, if it ain’t there, it should be. Who would’ve thought that this unprecedented endeavor could not only be possible but it’s also successful in every way, my goodness, if you don’t geek out at every scene in this film, then there is something emotionally and medically wrong with you.
Many of us wish that our childhood dream could someday turn into reality, somewhere along the way either our dreams change or we change but I can only imagine the big smile on Marvel’s head honcho Kevin Feige’s face, knowing that what he’s always wanted to see when he was a kid, is finally realized on the big screen, spectacularly I might add.

THE AVENGERS is the ultimate superhero movie, Marvel has now officially given DC-WB a run for their money. Earth’s mightiest heroes have assembled and they’re mightier than life itself. Congratulations to director/screenwriter Joss Whedon for showing us that juggling 8 characters, played by A-list superstars, is possible when you find the perfect balance..

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

There are so many reasons to love this movie, one of the big things is, besides the spectacle and the amazing sets and incredible visual effects, I really enjoy how simple and at the same time not so simple the core of it all is and by that I mean, you have a bad guy who wants to take over the world, he obtains this limitless power called cosmic cube and he’s got himself an alien army, and on the other hand you have a bunch of superheroes and so half of the movie all the way through the end is just about them beating each other up and you’d see buildings destroyed left and right, but.. there are also relationship dynamics going on, not just between the superheroes but also between the superheroes and the bad guy, in this case, represented by Loki. I mentioned perfect balance earlier, and that is where Joss Whedon, as the director of this ambitious project, wins. Every character gets a fair screen time and a day in the sun, each of them has arcs, and even though there are only about four of them who’ve had individual franchises, the story, by Zak Penn and Whedon, draws you into liking the new characters as well, and because Marvel played it smart by connecting its previous films through post-credit scenes and cameos and the build up, that sense of familiarity is already established, despite them being new or additional members.

I admit, I had my doubts when Marvel hired Whedon to direct THE AVENGERS, but I forgot that one of my favorite series and one of my favorite movies of all time were created by Whedon, Firefly and Serenity are essentially ensemble, the difference is that THE AVENGERS cast consists of bigger names with more star power.

Robert Downey Jr. has been adored by the world as Tony Stark, Downey plays Stark’s humor and confidence like a natural. I personally think Stark in THE AVENGERS is even 10 times funnier than he was in both previous Iron Man movies combined. You always want to hear whatever Tony Stark would say next and Downey’s charisma and talent are big part of that.

Stark now knows that he can’t handle everything on his own, but there’s still that pride and his tendency to joke around until reality bites and it finally hits him how much he needs this team and how much he needs this team to work.

Chris Evans is back as Captain America, one of my favorite because Cap does good solely for the sake of good, he doesn’t do it to impress a girl or to get fame, fortune, and glory, that kind of personality is rare these days. His dilemma is that he finds himself in modern time, he’s still the same person, he’s still got the same principles but the world he knew was gone, and the present world, with all its technology, is a stranger to him, there’s also that question of whether or not he’s relevant but what the movie shows us is that he is and that his help or contribution is even needed now more than ever because he’s the kind of guy you’d easily look up to in admiration.

Scarlett Johansson returns as Black Widow and thank God that Whedon wrote the character so that she gets to speak Russian and actually does more in THE AVENGERS because the Black Widow that Johansson played in Iron Man 2 was neither satisfying nor purposeful.
Jeremy Renner is one of the newbies, as Hawkeye, many die hard AVENGERS fans know Hawkeye as the kind of guy who does his own thing but he’ll help out when the team needs him. Renner is composed and determined.

Mark Ruffalo is now one of the many names who’ve had the honor of playing Bruce Banner and I love how Ruffalo’s banner is kinda like Bill Bixby who played Banner in my favorite series when I was a kid, The Incredible Hulk. You find Banner in an environment where he helps people and that’s how he channels his Hulk as well, you’ll see in this movie that he’s gotten to the point where he embraces Hulk and his anger. By the way, this new Hulk, which bears Ruffalo’s likeness, is not to be ignored, he smashes like it’s nobody’s business, he steals every scene he’s in.

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston reprise their roles as the brothers that clash, Thor and Loki, respectively.
Hemsworth’s physique is built like a nordic god, Thor continues to convince his brother to return from his ways but Loki is too far gone, beyond saving, he’s chosen his path and there’s no turning back. Hiddleston is a remarkable character actor, even with those two antlers, which could easily be a laughing stock for those who may not have grown up reading THOR comic books, Hiddleston provides a very complex, tortured, and yet commanding villain that’s absolutely power-hungry.
THE AVENGERS allows the fans to get to know SHIELD better this time around, they’re not just shadows in cameos and post-credit scenes any longer, they’ve become integral part of the story, you get to see helicarrier and its ridiculous resources as far as weaponry and technology are concerned. Led by Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, with the help of Agent Maria Hill (Coby Smulders) and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), they have the difficult task of selling the concept of Avengers initiative to these superheroes and getting them to work together, the same difficult task that Whedon must’ve been tackling.

It is no secret that many fans wonder how Marvel is going to pull this off because you deal with so many characters and they’re played by superstars but what Whedon and Feige have managed to do is craft this stand alone movie that caters to both fans of the comic books and fans who just enjoy Marvel movies. But the stand-alone part doesn’t shy away from the characters’ past problems, presented in very brief flashbacks. All of them have strong, stubborn, opinionated personalities, they all have struggles and when they collide, the arguments get louder and nastier by the minute, which is why audiences will find it easy to relate to or connect with them. Cap vs. Stark, Black Widow vs. Hulk, Hulk Vs. Thor, Hawkeye vs. Black Widow, Loki Vs. Hulk, Loki Vs. Thor, Thor Vs. Iron Man Vs. Cap, the movie keeps giving you one competition or one fight after another and ..even if you don’t care much about the motivation behind those fights, you’d still geek out because the idea of watching Iron Man and Thor battling it out on the big screen is just awesome.
Whedon has brought us a movie that excites our need for rock ‘em sock ‘em action.
One of the things I like about it is how the action is done much in a similar way that it’s done in the animated series, it’s set in a highly populated major city but give it a few minutes and the crowd would go missing, and what’s left are Loki and his army against THE AVENGERS, the city suddenly becomes both their playground and their battlefield.
I think ultimately what makes THE AVENGERS successful is that all the formulas and the elements work. You have a great cast, you have talentes behind-the-camera like cinematographer Seamus McGarvey and VFX master Janek Sirrs, the right blend of action and humor, not one overpowers the other, there’s never a dull moment, every minute is nothing short of entertaining, it’s like the stars are aligned for this one and the timing could not be more right. This movie is just so much fun, I want to stay on AVENGERS high and never go back down.

THE AVENGERS Movie Review By: Matt

By: Matt

The comic book fan-gasm known as The Avengers has finally arrived, with all the hype surrounding a summer blockbuster. For some, the idea of the ultmate superhero get-together promises to be bigger than anything we've ever seen. Yet, it also comes with its own set of questions: Would Director Joss Whedon (Firefly, The Cabin in the Woods) keep consistency between characters originally envisioned by other directors? Is there enough time for each hero to have their moment without making another Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition? What about the third actor playing Hulk in as many films? And while those and other questions have nagged at every fan since the project was announced, we really had nothing to fear.

The Avengers is a film of epic proportions, exceeding every expectation I had, putting to rest every question and concern I raised, and proving itself as the greatest superhero movie ever. But be warned: if you have not seen the single-hero movies preceeding The Avengers, you might get quickly confused; and we wouldn't want you going all Green Rage Monster on us.

When The Tesseract is stolen by Thor's half-brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston, War Horse), who intends to use it as a gateway for an alien invasion of Earth, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Brown) assembles a team of superheroes to capture Loki and retreive the device. Fury has wanted this mash-up almost as long as the fans have, even giving the project a name: The Avengers Initiative. But, getting them together will be no small task. Captain America (Chris Evans,Fantastic Four) has been recently discovered and thawed, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr, Sherlock Holmes) is finishing Stark Tower, Thor (Chris Hemsworth,Star Trek) is stuck on Asgard, and David Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo, Shutter Island) is playing doctor in Calcutta. As our heroes assemble (no pun), we soon realize that some team building will be necessary, only the 'activities' involve a lot of fighting and trading quips with one another. These hero fights are the best from the franchise and take place in unlikely locations, such as the epic forest battle between Thor and Iron Man. Our heroes eventually join forces with SHIELD agents Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson, The Spirit) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner, MI:IV), defending New York City when it falls prey to Loki and the Chitauri, a race commanded by an unseen force in another part of the universe. As the invasion begins, The Avengers race against the clock, using every ounce of their strength and the new-found teamwork to defend the people of Earth.

The Avengers delivers in every way, hitting each mark with a perfect mix of humor, action, and story. Whedon definitely understands every aspect of these characters, and crafts a story that is as funny as it is action-packed. The quibbling between Iron Man and Captain America is terrific, as it is between Thor and The Hulk. When Loki invades Stark Tower, he and Iron Man engage in a verbal sparring match that's extremely gratifying. But there's also a serious tone to the film, as Cap struggles to deal with the rapid changes in his life, and the realization by Black Widow and Hawkeye that their training never prepared them for this line of work. Loki's character is much more diabolical this go-around, as if his fall into the abyss in Thor resulted in serious mental damage to his psyche. But it is The Hulk who steals almost every scene in which he appears, including one with Loki which is an instant classic. There are so many layers to Whedon's story that one would have to see the film a couple of times (probably the point) to catch everything. Another standout feature here are the four large action pieces, each one achieving a higher level of perfection than the latter. The scale of the battles is simply amazing, with every character getting their fair share to demonstrate their incredible powers, and sometimes using each other's weapons in tandem (think about the video game Ultimate Avengers). Even the music by Composer Alan Silvestri (The Quick and the Dead) stands proud and tall, a fact which cannot be said for most of his projects. When our heroes assemble in a 360 degree money shot near the end of the film, Silvestri hits us with a theme that will knock your socks off, reappearing throughout the film to remind you just how cool it is. The 2 hour, 22-minute epic doesn't feel long at all, passing by with a speed only Iron Man seems capable of achieving.

The Avengers embodies all the best qualities of the franchise, perfectly weaving aspects of the Marvel film universe into a tale that redefines the genre forever, upping the ante in every scene and then paying it off with terrific wit, style, and heart. Two post-credits scenes are presented, so make sure you stick around for them. The Avengers sends a strong message to the DC universe and the summer film lineup in general: bring your 'A' game, or risk a Hulk smash!

Little Shop of Horrors Reboot On The Way. Seymour

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is developing with an eye to star in Warner Bros.’ remake of Little Shop of Horrors.

Marc Platt, the producer behind Broadway’s Wicked and such films as Wanted and Legally Blonde, is producing the redo, to which Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the playwright behind the Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, is coming on board to write the script. There is no director set.

Little Shop originally was a quirky 1960 movie from Roger Corman that featured a milquetoast florist who discovers success with a human-eating plant. It was turned into an off-Broadway musical, which led to a second movie in 1986, directed by Frank Oz and starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.

If the project comes together in an ideal fashion, Gordon-Levitt would play Seymour, the nerdy florist who is forced to feed the beast in order to keep his fame and popularity rising.
Gordon-Levitt, who has developed a following at Warners after key turns in Inception and this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises.

END OF WATCH Trailer From Open Road Films

Say what? Open Road Films delivered the first trailer for END OF WATCH starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Frank Grillo and Anna Kendrick. From the writer of Training Day & The Fast and the Furious and director of Harsh Times & Street Kings.

A powerful story of family, friendship, love, honor and courage, End of Watch stars Gyllenhaal and Peña as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles.

Giving the story a gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds entirely through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city’s most dangerous corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.

END OF WATCH opens September 28, 2012.
