MIRROR MIRROR MOVIE REVIEW

MIRROR MIRROR MOVIE REVIEW
BY: RAMA

Did RAMA fall in love with the fairy tale again?

MIRROR MIRROR is.. think if Snow White Tale was a sitcom. Families are going to have much fun watching this. I had low expectation coming in, but I was impressed with some of the spectacle that director Tarsem Singh came up with and the new spin
Lily Collins is luminous as Snow White. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. Sure the film’s got lavish costumes and majestic scenery but there’s something visually arresting about Collins.
If they ever made a biopic on Audrey Hepburn, Collins should be the star.
The dwarfs are hilarious. Fantastic group of people.
The weakest link is Armie Hammer as the prince, his bumbling, comical performance just doesn’t cut it.
MIRROR MIRROR is a bit silly for my taste but,.. it’s a Singh presentation where imagination knows no bounds.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh (Immortals) rewrites fairy tale history as a wicked enchantress (Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan’s (Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Hammer). When Snow White’s beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest, where a ravening man-eating beast hungrily awaits.
Rescued by a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen. With the support of her subjects, she roars into action in an epic battle that blends spectacle, magic and contemporary humor in Singh’s signature, jaw-dropping visual style.

How many versions of SNOW WHITE tale exist out there? Probably too many to count, one thing for sure is that there are two Snow White films this summer, and MIRROR MIRROR is the one that chose the lighthearted direction.

Singh brought us The Cell and The Fall, two of the most visually mindblowing films I’ve ever seen, I didn’t care much for Immortals, so we’re going to leave that one out.
So with MIRROR MIRROR, Singh incorporates his eye for splendor into this story that seems to be high on caffeine because it’s just full of energy.
At one point, the prince acts like a puppy, at another the dwarfs fight off giant hand puppets, and many other situations that make you wonder how much more odd can it get, even the costumes practically compete with those featured in The Hunger Games film.

Whatever version of Snow White may be, at the very heart of it has always been about the queen wanting to stay fair, beautiful and young and then the envy that comes with that. In MIRROR MIRROR, Julia Roberts embodies that motivation for vanity. Roberts is absolutely wicked as the queen and because the movie’s tone is not grim or dark, Roberts’ job gets even heavier because she has the responsibility to show the audience that her character can command just about anything and she doesn’t need anybody’s permission.
Lily Collins’s acting talent may not be on the same level as Roberts’ but she doesn’t need to try too hard to come off enchanting and sympathetic because there’s something in her appearance and the way she carries herself that already personifies such young, innocent qualities. Whenever Collins steps into the screen, everything seems to light up.

But the winner of MIRROR MIRROR are the seven dwarfs. You get new characters in this version and each of them stands out. You’ll finish watching this movie, walking out of the theaters, being a fan of one or two of those dwarfs because they’d steal the scenes and they’d steal your heart.

One way to look at MIRROR MIRROR is that it’s female empowerment story. It’s Snow White Vs. Evil Queen and you get to see how each influences those around them either negatively or positively.
The humor doesn’t always work at the same time but it will tickle the easily amused, at the very best you’d find yourself giggling. The CG and VFX might get overbearing at times, but what else do you expect from a Singh presentation anyway. The world created or designed for this film is nothing short of royal and extravagant.

Is MIRROR MIRROR a better snow white movie than Snow White And The Huntsman, it’s arguable, but MIRROR MIRROR has made itself unique, and memorable

Famke Janssen Goes To Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove,” a gripping tale of murder, mystery and monsters set in a ravaged Pennsylvania steel town, starring Famke Janssen and Bill Skarsgard and produced by Gaumont International Television, will be available for Netflix members to watch instantly, beginning early in 2013.

Hemlock Grove” starts with the body of a young girl, mangled and murdered in the shadow of the former Godfrey steel mill. Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a biotech facility owned by the former steel magnates. Others believe the killer could be Peter, a 17-year-old Gypsy kid from the wrong side of the tracks, who tells his classmates he’s a werewolf. Or it could be Roman (Skarsgard), the arrogant Godfrey scion, whose sister Shelley is disturbingly deformed and whose mother, Olivia (Janssen), the otherworldly beautiful and controlling grand dame of Hemlock Grove.

As the crime goes unsolved and outlandish rumors mount, Peter and Roman decide to find the killer themselves, confronting unspeakable truths about themselves and Hemlock Grove as the mystery unfolds.

“Eli Roth is a master of this genre and Brian McGreevy’s brilliant novel gives Roth a world where he can create his magic,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “‘Hemlock Grove’ is a sly blend of J.D. Salinger and Mary Shelley and will appeal to a broad base of fans captivated by these rich characters and stunning visuals.”

“I’ve been waiting for years to dive into television, and Eric Newman and I founded Arcade to do elevated genre projects exactly like ‘Hemlock Grove’. Brian McGreevy’s novel blew me away, and the material lends itself perfectly to long format storytelling. ‘Hemlock Grove’ is smart, dark, complex, and at times terrifying,” said Eli Roth.

He added: “What’s most exciting to me is creating the series for Netflix, which as a feature filmmaker is like telling a story in a new medium. Netflix as a platform is the perfect hybrid of cinema, television, and social networking, with the creative freedom to go as dark as the story needs.”

The 13 episode first season of “Hemlock Grove” is Roth’s first foray into serialized drama as a director and executive producer. Roth created the Hostel franchise, directing seven major motion pictures, producing 13 and appearing in several hit films, including a stand-out role as Sgt. Donny Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”.

Janssen (Olivia Godfrey) is an actress, director and screenwriter who played Dr. Jean Grey in the global blockbuster “X-Men”trilogy and starred alongside Kenneth Branagh and Judy Davis in Woody Allen’s “Celebrity”. Janssen can soon be seen in “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” alongside Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton and in “Taken 2” with Liam Neeson. Her debut film as a director and screenwriter, “Bringing up Bobby”, starring Milla Jovovich, Bill Pullman and Marcia Cross, opens in the United States in October.

Skarsgard (Roman Godfrey) is an up and coming Swedish actor, who will soon be seen alongside Keira Knightley and Jude Law in director Joe Wright’s “Anna Karenina.” Previously, Skarsgard has played a wide range of roles in Swedish television and independent films, including the critically-acclaimed “Simon of the Oaks” directed by Lisa Ohlin.

“Hemlock Grove” is executive produced and written by McGreevy, author of the FSG Originals novel, and Lee Shipman. Other projects they have in development include the Bram Stoker adaptation “Harker” for Warner Brothers and Appian Way, the King Arthur epic “Pendragon” for New Regency, and “Zorro Reborn” for 20th Century Fox.

Also executive producing are Eric Newman, producer of such films as “The Last Exorcism,” “Dawn of the Dead” and “Children of Men,” Michael Connolly, co-producer of “How to Train Your Dragon,” and Mark Verheiden, co-executive producer of “Battlestar Gallactica” and other shows.

“It is an honor to be working with Eli Roth, a director whom I’ve admired for years, along with Brian McGreevy & Lee Shipman and the team at Netflix on this series,” commented Gaumont International Television chief executive officer Katie O’Connell. “Netflix is the perfect platform for this exhilarating reinvention of the gothic mystery story. From day one, our mandate at Gaumont International Television has been to the produce high-quality drama programming for the U.S. and international markets and ‘Hemlock Grove’ certainly fits the bill.”

GOON Movie Review

GOON Movie Review
By: RAMA

Did RAMA want to put on his hockey gear after watching the film? Make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

It’s violent, raunchy, and they’re not kidding when the tagline says that Sean William Scott’s character, Doug, is nice, he may well be the nicest hockey player you’ll get to know. GOON knocks your teeth out and aims straight for your heart. Jay Baruchel has always loved this sport so I commend him for crafting this passion project, an adaptation based on the novel Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey, which I have yet to read, and Jay didn’t even intend it so that he would be the lead star, another admirable point. Everybody loves an underdog story and that’s what GOON has to offer, can nice guys exist and excel in such a testosterone-fueled sport?! Doug may be the embodiment of nice guys finish last but he’s one nice guy you wouldn’t want to get into a fist fight with..

Doug Glatt, a slacker who discovers he has a talent for brawling is approached by a minor league hockey coach and invited to join the team as the “muscle.” Despite the fact that Glatt can’t skate his best friend, Pat, convinces him to give it a shot, and Glatt becomes a hero to the team and their fans, until the league’s reigning goon becomes threatened by Glatt’s success and decides to even the score.

I grew up in a tropical area where everybody played either soccer or badminton, so what’s my knowledge on hockey? Zero, zip, nada! Whenever a hockey movie comes around, I usually judge it on every other aspect but the sport itself because I’m the last person who would know whether or not those hockey movies are technically accurate.

I’ve always heard that in Hockey, they’d give two opposing players some time to battle it out, literally, but I’m not sure at which level of professional hockey are they still allowing such tradition, I certainly don’t believe the refs would let you get away with it on such grand stage as the Winter Olympics.
So I’m thinkin’ such fist fights are common in the hockey games that Baruchel grew up with.

GOON is a story about a guy named Doug who has but only one gift and one gift only, his fists, he can punch you once in the face and you won’t wake up til the day after.
He looks around and sees that everybody’s got somethin’, some purpose, some career, some business or something going in their lives except him, until opportunity punches him in the face and makes him the go-to fighter for a local hockey team and then he goes on to pro.

On the other end of the ring is Liev Schreiber’s character, Ross, whose job is pretty much like Doug’s, he’s the guy that the coach would call whenever he needs someone to beat up an opposing player.
There’s a scene that I’d like to call the Pacino-DeNiro’s Heat sitdown scene where Doug and Ross meet up. Ross on the edge of retirement, returns to his hometown team for one last gig, one last fight and he sees Doug as somewhat of a new version of him. Ross, having more experience, wants to tell Doug that they both are pretty much pitbulls, that nobody considers them hockey players, a reality that Doug refuses to believe.

The story at first leans toward Ross’ perspective because Doug’s teammates never see him as equal but eventually they do, a privilege that Ross sadly never seemed to have the opportunity to be enlightened by.
So what screenwriters Evan Goldberg and Jay Baruchel did was make you feel for Doug’s present terms and be concerned for whether or not he would end up like Ross.
It’s the story of accepting someone for who they are, what they can do, not what you want them to be, although the arguments given by Doug’s parents, who think that Doug’s so-called career a waste of time, do make sense.
Goldberg and Baruchel didn’t just focus on the R-rated comedy, they wanted it to be about everyday joe schmoe who can do great things, if someone would just believe in him, just as much as he believes in everybody around him, and sometimes that’s all it takes.

BULLY Now Playing In Select Theaters

On behalf of The Weinstein Company, we are pleased to announce that the documentary BULLY is now playing in select theaters in New York and LA.

Over 13 million American kids will be bullied this year, making it the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. The new documentary film BULLY, directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, brings human scale to this startling statistic, offering an intimate, unflinching look at how bullying has touched five kids and their families.

BULLY is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. Filmed over the course of the 2009/2010 school year, BULLY opens a window onto the pained and often endangered lives of bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. It documents the responses of teachers and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents and youths to change how bullying is handled in schools, in communities and in society as a whole.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito & Eddie Murphy Team Up For Triplets

Is the world ready for a sequel to Twins?

Universal and Montecito Picture Co. are hoping to develop a doozy of a follow-up to the 1988 hit comedy that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito that would reunite the two stars.

But wait, there’s a twist: In the new scenario, Eddie Murphy would act as a third brother.

Titled Triplets, the story would see Schwarzenegger and DeVito as brothers Julius and Vincent, conceived experimentally, who discover they have third sibling.

The project doesn’t have a director at this early stage -- Ivan Reitman, who helmed the original, would only act as a producer with his Montecito Picture Co. cohorts Joe Medjuk, Tom Pollock and Ali Bell, according to sources -- but the hunt is on for writers to develop the idea. Insiders caution that no substantial creative discussions have taken place between Universal and Montecito.

The actors are attached to star.

WRATH OF THE TITANS Movie Review By: Matt C

WRATH OF THE TITANS Movie Review
By: Matt C

Does Wrath of the Titans improve on the original, or get banished to the underworld?

The 2012 summer movie list is one of the most tantalizing in recent memory. Stuck at one end of this onslaught of cinematic rapture is Wrath of the Titans, a curious opening act considering the ho-hum reaction its older brother received in 2010. However, armed with a new director, better action, and a slightly better script, Wrath is an improvement on Clash, but still misses the target. Let’s put it this way: if you enjoy the typical summer movie popcorn fare, Wrath is for you; but, don’t expect a history lesson on Greek mythology that makes even a lick of sense. Set 10 years after Clash, Perseus (Sam Worthington, T4: Rise of the Machines) has a son but has recently buried his wife Io after an uknown tragedy. Returning to the life of a fisherman, Perseus is unwilling to accept his demigod status and has rejected his father Zeus (Liam Neeson, Taken). Perseus is not alone; it seems that others are also rejecting the gods, and without their love, Zeus and the others will soon perish, thus leaving the massive entombed creature Kronos (Zeus’ father) free to annihilate mankind. Bur Kronos needs help getting free, so Hades (Ralph Finnes, Harry Potter) and Aeres (Edgar Ramirez, The Bourne Ultimatum) hatch a plan to kidnap Zeus and drain his power to recharge Kronos’s batteries. Once Perseus learns of the treachery, it’s off to the underworld with Argenor (Toby Kebbell, War Horse) and the beautiful Andromeda (Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day) to save Dad. Like I said, if convoluted Greek mythology that leaves more questions than it answers is your thing, then this one’s for you.

But unlike its elder brother, Wrath of the Titans does offer a slightly better product. The monsters are bigger and meaner, the tone is grittier, and the cast seems more engaged than in the previous effort. Bill Nighy (Underworld) is fun as the god's blacksmith Hephaestus, and Pike is an upgrade from Clash’s heroine.

Posedion (Danny Huston, Wolverine) could have used more screentime, but I was glad to see the minor role of Perseus’ son Helius (John Bell) kept to a minimum. I'm so tired of the way the son element is abused in movies, but Bell's smallish role actually shows growth of the character when he realizes that he and his father can never return to the simple life of a fisherman. Composer Javier Navarette (Pan’s Labryinth) crafts one of tbe best soundtracks of the year – its big score matches the epic battle scenes conjured up by director Johanthan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles). Liebesman’s use of both hand-held cameras and sweeping CGI scenes mix up the action just enough to keep the paltry 100-minute runtime feel like a rollercoaster ride that does feel quite complete. The thinly veiled script doesn’t kill the film, but it could have used more muscle. Had the studio actually worked to balance its shortcomings, Wrath could have been a terrific product. I do recommend the film, but stay away from the post-production 3D, which is distracting to say the least.

While not banned to the underworld, Wrath of the Titans does miss in a few places. Despite these problems, its big scope and fast pace is a fun rollercoaster ride that will make you briefly forget about the more substantial pieces on their way this summer.
