Netflix Largest Subscription Entertainment Business

Netflix is poised to become the largest subscription entertainment business in the U.S. when it reports quarterly earnings on Monday.

Analysts are figuring that Netflix will have added around 3.7 million subscribers to its ranks, giving it 23.7 million, give or take 100,000.

Even if Netflix is shy of estimates, it will likely show enough growth to propel it ahead of Comcast at 22.8 million video subscribers and beyond the 20.2 million subs at Sirius XM Radio.

Because growth has stalled at Comcast’s video business, it will likely have to settle for being third in this particular contest as Sirius XM and Netflix duke it out for supremacy in the entertainment-subscription arena.
Ensuring that Netflix maintains it’s growth – and some analysts predict it will close out the year with north of 30 million subs – is its embrace of digital streaming, where there isn’t much competition yet.

Analysis from NPD, in fact, suggests 61 percent of all movies viewed through the Internet are done so courtesy of Netflix. That’s eight times more than Comcast, the No. 2 purveyor of online movies, notes BMO Capital Markets analyst Edward Williams.

Netflix has partnered with so many consumer electronics manufacturers that its streaming service is on 250 devices, making on-demand viewing of movies and TV shows on TV screens a simple task.

“Following the torrid pace of subscriber growth since Netflix’s Watch Instantly service made its way onto game consoles, we expect subscriber growth to remain elevated,” Williams said.

“Eventually,” added Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett, “Netflix may face more competition from larger players that we believe are likely to launch online streaming subscriptions with better content. For now, however, the company has the only meaningful online streaming subscription offering for consumers in the U.S.”

Time Warner’s HBO would like to be considered meaningful online competition some day. It’s rolling out its HBO Go on Apple and Android devices May 2, giving its subscribers 1,400 hours of premium content.
Crockett called HBO Go “the beginning of Netflix alternatives,” adding that, “over time, it could be a factor – better content, a comparable interface, could lessen the interest of some in signing up for Netflix.”

When Netflix reports first-quarter results Monday, analysts will be looking at how much it is spending to get rights to all that streaming content – more than 17,000 movie and TV titles -- that it boasts of.

Some of the recent deals include rights from Lionsgate to stream at least the first four seasons of Mad Men; with Fox for shows like Glee, Sons of Anarchy, Ally McBeal and The Wonder Years; and with CBS for shows like Frasier, Cheers, Twin Peaks, Star Trek and The Twilight Zone.

And the most noteworthy deal was with Media Rights Capital because it was for exclusive rights to stream a “TV” series that hasn’t been made yet, putting it in direct competition – sort of – with HBO and other cable networks.

Crockett figures Netflix spent $171 million for streaming deals in the first quarter, and will spend more than $1.1 billion in 2011. Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities says Netflix will spend $500 million more this year to secure rights to streaming content than it did last year.

What all this means for the stock, of course, is debatable, but even Netflix’s bulls are cautious, given that Netflix shares have soared 450 percent in two years.

Both Crockett and Williams say mostly positive things in their research notes about Netflix, though neither are recommending that their clients buy the stock. Crockett rates shares “neutral” and Williams rates them “market perform.”

Pachter’s is probably the most bearish view on Wall Street, rating Netflix shares “underperform” with a price target of $80. The stock most recently closed at $252.22, so Pachter is predicting it will fall nearly 70 percent over the next 12 months.

Bilbo Baggins Returns For The Hobbit

Ian Holm will be returning to reprise his role as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. For all you Hobbit fans I am sure you have seen the first video blog that Peter Jackson has released if you haven't you will hear Holm voice at the end.

Read the comment after the Jump...

One comment that came up from the recent video blog was the Bilbo voice at the end—many of you assumed it was Sir Ian Holm. Whilst Ian will be returning as the older Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, that recording was actually Martin Freeman’s voice, taken from a script read through we recorded when the cast first arrived. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure who it was when I first heard it, either. Cheers, Peter J

Masi Oka's The Correctors Coming To SyFy

The former "Heroes" star will collaborate with writer Alex Sabeti on "The Correctors," a time-travel, Inception-esque project.

Masi Oka is teaming up with writer Alex Sabeti (Art of Cool) on an Inception-esque pilot script for Syfy.

The Correctors follows two agents of the Exceptions Bureau who are dispatched to a parallel universe where they inhabit the bodies of their identical selves in order to stop events from occurring.

The time-travel elements and changing the course of history were key in the plot of NBC’s now-defunct Heroes, where Oka played a Hiro Nakamura, who could bend the space-time continuum.

Sabeti and Oka developed the story and Sabeti will write the script with Masi executive producing and possibly starring.

Osa has had a recurring role on CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 this season.

Syfy has become a player in ad-supported cable’s scripted arena. Last January’s bow of Being Human was the net’s most successful winter scripted series since Battlestar Galactica in 2005. The show, an adaptation of the popular BBC series, averaged 1.9 million viewers per episode.

In July, Syfy will launch a new Monday-night scripted block with new seasons of Eureka, Warehouse 13 (Syfy’s most-watched series averaging 3.4 million viewers last season) and new drama Alphas, while Haven returns Friday, July 15.

Jeremy Renner Offered The Bourne Legacy

Jeremy Renner, has been offered the starring role in Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy. Gilroy, who wrote or co-wrote the first three films in Universal's Bourne saga, has been testing actors for the last few weeks to play a brand new lead character distinct from Matt Damon's Jason Bourne (Damon isn't returning).

Latinoreview broke this casting story 3 weeks ago and now THR has confirmed it.

The problem, as always, is scheduling. It took a while to work out his ability to star in Paramount's Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which he's shooting now for a March release. That followed filming his role in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, also for Paramount, which hits theaters in December.

Then there's the little movie The Avengers, in which he plays Hawkeye for Marvel Studios and Disney. That comes out in May next year, but audiences will get a sneak peek at him in Thor, which Paramount hammers into theaters in two weeks to kick off the summer. Avengers starts shooting soon and will continue filming into August and September with Joss Whedon at the helm and a slew of other superheroes on set.

But Renner had been considering starring opposite Eric Bana in Sheldon Turner's revenge thriller By Virtue Fall in the fall. It's a project Renner has been flirting with for most of the last year. Now it looks like he will instead jump from Avengers right into his third (!!) potential franchise with Bourne, then shoot Virtue after the New Year.

The Bourne Legacy is expected to hit theaters August 3rd, 2012.

Cost of a Soul, is the feature film writing and directorial debut of Sean Kirkpatrick, a film graduate of Pennsylvania State University. It is the gritty tale of two wounded veterans who return home to the ghetto they joined the military to escape. As they struggle for redemption, their own families become entangled in a web of crime, corruption and violence. The film was shot in the spirit of the 1940’s film noir, but set in the modern context of a Philadelphia ghetto neighborhood. The locations used during production were some of the most violent neighborhoods in America as Kirkpatrick’s goal was to embrace the reality of the situation within those neighborhoods

After graduating from film school, Kirkpatrick moved to Los Angeles in 2007 to pursue his dreams of becoming a filmmaker. In 2008, Kirkpatrick penned Cost of a Soul and in 2009 he assembled a cast and crew in his hometown of Philadelphia to begin production on the film. Cost of a Soul has already caught the attention of various film festivals and was an official selection of the 2010 Hollywood Film Festival, 2010 Cinequest, 2010 HBO NY International Latino Film Festival, 2010 Brooklyn International Film Festival, 2010 Toronto Moving Image Film Festival, 2010 San Antonio Film Festival and the 2010 Rehoboth Beach Film Festival. Kate Beckinsale Offered Role Of Lori In Total Recall

Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the female lead roles alongside Colin Farrell in the Sony Pictures remake Total Recall.  She's been offered to play Lori, who was portrayed in the 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed actioner by Sharon Stone. In fact, that role really launched Stone's star after she transformed from the happy spouse of Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) into someone completely different.

Both that role and the role of Melina (played in the original by Rachel Ticotin) has drawn high interest from actresses. I've heard that Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are the serious contenders for the latter role.

Beckinsale wasn't among the names most often mentioned among actresses who read for Lori. But she certainly has a track record with the film's director, Len Wiseman. They're married, and before that, worked together on the Underworld films. Beckinsale, who just wrapped Contraband with Mark Wahlberg, is also attached to star in The Trials of Kate McCullough, to be directed by Karen Moncrieff. She is currently shooting Underworld 4: New Dawn, so we'll have to wait a beat to see if she accepts.

Initially, one might perceive ArnoCorps as merely a group of five highly trained militant Austrian action-rock heroes. Big mistake. The motivation behind the band is far too complex to be defined by such superficial characteristics. Inspired by the ancient heroic lore and mythology of the Austrian Alpine communities, the content of ArnoCorps music carries on their homeland's sacred tradition of telling stories of great deeds and fantastic adventures through song. As such, the band has been singularly responsible for restoring integrity to the many Austrian tales that have been bastardized for cinematic exploitation throughout their lifetimes.

ArnoCorps' explosive live performance doesn't depend on pyrotechnics or lighting effects to create excitement. The band's pure physicality has qualified them to be featured in SF's World's Deadliest Bands annual showcase two years running. Still, there is no need to fear ArnoCorps. They are a rescue team, not assassins. ArnoCorps performances have evolved to the point where attendees are no longer merely observers, but willing participants in a life-changing event. Many audience members claim to leave with increased muscle mass, a better understanding of life's mysteries and feeling like "goddamn heroes."

After the release of their album "The Greatest Band Of All Time" on Great Britain's Anticulture Records, ArnoCorps conducted a headline tour of the UK and Ireland in 2006, amassing much critical acclaim, including a perfect 10 out of 10 rating from the BBC.

Details For Disneyland's Star Tours 2

With less then 2 months away from the launch of the redesigned Star Tours ride at Disneyland. Disney has sent out this press releases giving more information on the ride and all the juicy details about where you might be headed.

Read the press releases after the Jump...

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The power of the Force and the magic of Disney have combined to create “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue,” a new 3-D attraction set to open at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park on May 20, 2011. The attraction also will open at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, Calif., on June 3, 2011.

Based on the Star Wars films, Star Tours will take Walt Disney World Resort guests to multiple Star Wars destinations where they will interact with characters from throughout the Saga. And it will all be in 3-D.

With eye-popping 3-D digital filming, a dramatic musical score and motion simulator-based technology, guests will be immersed in the Star Wars galaxy like never before on a theme park attraction. Walt Disney Imagineering worked with Lucasfilm, Ltd. and Industrial Light & Magic – the groundbreaking visual effects division of Lucasfilm – to bring the out-of-this-world attraction to life.

Star Tours, which had thrilled Disney Parks guests since the 1980s, was “powered down” at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2010 so Imagineers could begin work on the new attraction.

And in a new twist, guests may be able to enjoy the attraction multiple times without ever experiencing the same adventure. More than 50 story combinations are possible for guests to experience aboard Star Tours.

Just as the Star Wars films immerse movie-goers in storylines that keep them on the edge of their seats, Star Tours will feature multiple stories and scenarios that will hurtle park guests throughout the Star Wars galaxy. And all of the storyline’s twists and turns will be random, affording guests the chance to ride the attraction multiple times.

Whether it’s a battle with Darth Vader and his legion of stormtroopers or a plea from Princess Leia to help her save the Rebellion, guests will find themselves in the middle of the action – literally – in the 3-D, multi-sensory attraction.

Entering the attraction queue area, Star Tours guests walk into a bustling spaceport. The famed Star Wars droid duo, C-3PO and R2-D2, greet them as the Starspeeder 1000 is prepped for service. Anthony Daniels, the voice of C-3PO and the only actor to appear in every theatrical chapter of the Star Wars Saga, reprises his role as the golden protocol droid. Daniels worked with Walt Disney Imagineering to record new dialogue for the attraction. Guests also are introduced to AC-38, a hotshot droid pilot known simply as “Ace,” and Aly San San (voiced by actress Allison Janney), the “spokesbot” for the spaceport.

After winding through the spaceport, guests board the Starspeeder 1000 spacecraft and prepare for Star Tours Flight #1401. Through a series of mishaps, however, C-3PO finds himself in the pilot’s seat instead of Ace, and it’s up to him and R2-D2 to navigate their passengers through the galaxy. However, the tyrannical Empire is out to stop the Starspeeder at all costs. C-3PO and R2-D2 take the controls and try to outwit and outrun the Imperial forces and a galactic bounty hunter hired to pursue the spaceship and its passengers.

Utilizing the 50+ random story combinations, the Starspeeder then embarks on a wild trip through the galaxy, visiting several planets made famous in the Star Wars films. Among the locations that might provide haven from the Empire’s pursuit are the icy planet of Hoth, the lush jungles of Kashyyyk and the underwater Gungan world of Naboo. And along the way guests may encounter Star Wars characters that offer to help (or hinder) their journey, including Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Darth Vader and Boba Fett. “Skytroopers,” a legion of stormtroopers created just for the Star Tours attraction story, might even join in the chase.

In fact, with multiple ways to experience each flight, guests will never know where the Force will take them.

At Walt Disney World Resort, Star Tours opens May 20, 2011, the same day the annual Star Wars Weekends event begins at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park. Star Tours and Star Wars Weekends event activities are included in regular admission to Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park.

For more information and to purchase theme park tickets or book vacation packages, guests may visit disneyworld.com/startours or disneyworld.com/starwarsweekends.

Craig Gillespie Talks Pride And Prejudice And Zombies

Jane Austen purists, eat your heart out. It’s going to happen to some of your favorite characters anyway.
Lars and the Real Girl director Craig Gillespie finalized his deal yesterday to helm the big-screen version of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s bestselling fusion of Austen’s 19th century comedy of manners and romance with a nightmarish horde of flesh-eating undead. Gillespie recently wrapped a remake of the ’80s cult classic Fright Night, with Colin Farrell as the unfriendly neighborhood vampire, and plans to begin shooting P+P+Z at the end of summer.

Gillespie spoke exclusively to EW about how he plans to make zombies seem natural in the early-1800′s British countryside, and whether Austen film alums Colin Firth and Keira Knightley could make cameos…

I’m trying to think of a common thread between your three recent films – Lars and the Real Girl, the Fright Night remake, and now Pride and Prejudice and Zombies — and all I can figure is that you’re fascinated by things that aren’t really alive.

CRAIG GILLESPIE: [Laughs] Yeah, there’s a certain undead quality.

What’s the state of the project? David O. Russell was attached to direct. Then he dropped out in a budget dispute, and Mike White took over directing duties, but then left to focus on an HBO series. Do you start from scratch?

No, we have a really great script that we’re just going to do a polish on and then get going, really…. David Russell wrote the script off the book, and it has such a great mix of humor and horror. I just love being able to juggle those two aspects. The humor is inherent in the Pride and Prejudice side, but taking that and accenting it with zombies is just a brilliant and fun idea. And there are such strong female characters, which is nice to have. It’s a great clash.

What sold you on this mash-up between pre-Victorian British literature and flesh-eating horror?

I was aware the project was around, but at the time it wasn’t available. Then it became available. I was still finishing up Fright Night, but in the meantime I called my agent and said, “I want to see that script.” He said, “I’m not sure we’d be able to figure out the timing.” But I read the first 30 pages and said, “I want to do this.” It’s just such a great combination between classic literature — Jane Austen, and meshing it with zombies. The challenge of meshing those two genres is really exciting to me.

How would you describe the final combination — is it a horror film, a comedy, a supernatural drama?

There’s a lot of action in this. There are a lot of big set pieces in this film, which is exciting. Basically, as I said to the studio, at the core it’s a love story between Elizabeth and Darcy. If that’s not working, and we’re not rooting for those two get together through all this craziness, the movie is not going to work. That’s key to me, to have this great emotional story going on, and all this craziness.

So what you’re saying is this needs real drama. It can’t be a spoof

Exactly. But there can be comic relief.

What do you have to protect from Austen’s original work to keep the balance?

I love the propriety of the Jane Austen novels, which you want to keep. The language, what’s appropriate and not appropriate. The customs, and the hierarchy. They had very witty dialogue with a lot of undertones to it. You need the juxtoposition. There’s going to be a strong gothic undertone, which ties the two genres together. It’s more in the world of [Tim Burton's 1999] Sleepy Hollow, where it’s somewhat stylized. We have that creative license because of the zombies. I’ll certainly do my homework and explore genres to see what might work, but it’s going to have that strong gothic sense, I think.

Though the two sides of the story share a gothic, heightened tone, is it possible to add zombies to a British pastoral romance and still make it believable?

They’re incorporated in a great way. It’s literally just a burden they have to deal with. And back in those days, people would die from plagues. It’s just a hardship they have to work through. They still try to keep the social norms working. It’s not proper for a lady to be carrying a shotgun, for example, but here she’s got to have a weapon.

Who do you have in mind for the roles of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy?

Casting is trying to find the people who can walk that line. It’s too early now. [Laughs] Nice try though.

Any chance you can recruit actors who have appeared in previous versions of Pride and Prejudice to, say, do a couple cameos as flesh-eaters? Like, could we see a zombie Colin Firth or a zombie Keira Knightley?

I hadn’t thought about that, but you’re definitely giving me food for thought.

Batman: Year One Lands Allstar Cast

Bryan Cranston, Ben McKenzie, Eliza Dushku and Katee Sackhoff have been tapped to star as the voices in Batman: Year One, the adaptation of the Frank Miller comic book classic from Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation.

Lauren Montgomery and Sam Liu are directing the movie, the 12th entry in the successful series of DC universe animated originals. Tab Murphy wrote the script.

The feature adapts the landmark four-issue story written by Miller and drawn by David Mazzucchelli that first appeared in 1987 on the heels of Miller's seminal work, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Those tomes, along with The Watchmen, helped elevate the comics medium, changing the public's perception of the art form and influencing Hollywood writers and artists to this day.

In Year One, a young Bruce Wayne is first starting out as a costumed vigilante. He creates an early bond with Lieutenant James Gordon, whose importance in the tale makes it as much as Gordon's story as Wayne's.
Cranston is playing Gordon, while McKenzie is Wayne/Batman. Dushku voices Catwoman, while Sackhoff is Detective Sarah Essen, a Gordon love interest.

Additionally, Alex Rocco lends his pipes as crime lord Carmine Falcone.

As one of the holy grails in comic books, Year One will be closely scrutinized for faithfulness, but superhero animation veteran Bruce Timm, who is exec producing, says there is very little in the movie that isn't in the comic.

"The source material is surprisingly cinematic; it's a pretty straight forward literal retelling," he says. "Mazzucchelli's artwork is beautifully composed and we were able to refer to the comic for about 80 percent of the camera setups."

Cranston, an Emmy winner for AMC's Breaking Bad, says he initially turned down the chance to work on Year One, not even wanting to read the script. He blames it on his ignorance of the animation medium as well as the classic comics.

"I wasn't aware of this level of storytelling in animation. I confess that freely," he says. "They didn't give the characters the short shrift. I was stunned."

Batman: Year One, which will be rated PG-13, is scheduled to be released on home video in the fall but will world premiere in July at Comic-Con.
