Blu-Ray Review: Mr. Church

Eddie Murphy drama is about as enjoyable as church.

Review by Brandon Wolfe and Matt Cummings

Eddie Murphy has defined himself by his innate laziness for so long—decades now—that any faint whiff of ambition he exudes has become cause for celebration. Murphy has squandered his immense talent on cut-rate comedies and kid movies almost without reprieve for about twenty years now, leaving that electric performer from the ‘80s a dim memory. After his last misfire, 2012’s woebegone bomb A Thousand Words, Murphy entered into a long hiatus from acting. The hope then became that he would eventually reemerge as the Eddie Murphy of old, reinvested and committed in ways that have eluded him for so long, his tenure sleepwalking through paycheck movies at a close.

What Murphy came back with is Mr. Church, a low-key drama. Drama is fine. While Murphy being funny again is the ultimate goal, seeing him making any kind of effort is laudable, and it isn’t as though he has nothing to offer in a dramatic role (see Dreamgirls). Yet in spite of it clearly being a noncommercial prestige bid, Mr. Church is a wet Kleenex of a movie, soggy and in a state of rapid disintegration. For whatever artistic aims the film set out with, what’s left is something the Hallmark Channel might air on a desolate Monday afternoon.

The Movie - 2.5/5

Charlotte "Charlie" Brooks (Britt Robertson; Natalie Coughlin in the earlier scenes) is a young woman living with her radiant single mother Marie (Natascha McElhone). Marie has cancer, a secret she shields from Charlie, and has an estimated six months to live. Marie’s recently deceased lover has decreed posthumously to pay for Marie’s medical care throughout her remaining days, but more than that, he has also taken the liberty of hiring a personal chef for the Brooks ladies, the kindly Mr. Church (Murphy), who shows up promptly each morning to prepare a gourmet breakfast and leaves in the evening after serving an immaculate dinner. Charlie is initially distrustful of this stranger’s presence in her home, but gradually warms to him, helped along by Mr. Church providing her access to his personal library of books.

Marie winds up taking a turn for the better and survives for six years, with Mr. Church keeping to his duties all that time while Charlie grows into her burgeoning womanhood. The three of them have formed into something of a family unit, with Mr. Church filling the fatherly role that Charlie has never known. When Marie does finally succumb to her illness, Mr. Church continues to look after Charlie, even bestowing unto her the money needed for her college tuition, using cash he’s saved over the years from Marie’s grocery coupons. While Mr. Church has a clear affinity for Charlie, he always keeps her at arm’s length, refusing to divulge anything about his personal life after hours. When Charlie leaves college after becoming pregnant, she shows up on Mr. Church’s doorstep asking for a place to stay. He agrees, on the condition that she continue not to pry into any of his affairs.

This isn’t the worst setup for a character drama, but an inertia infects Mr. Church from start to finish, one that doesn’t suggest that Murphy has come back swinging. He makes Mr. Church a soft-spoken dispenser of wisdom, unwavering in his fundamental decency. This is Eddie Murphy stepping into Morgan Freeman territory, and it doesn’t quite suit him. Worse still, the film veers a bit too close to the “magical negro” stereotype, with Mr. Church portrayed as a saintly vessel intended only to shape the white protagonist. Even hints of a clandestine personal life and troubled past don’t fill in the gaps that might make Mr. Church feel like a human being rather than Charlie’s shepherd.

The Video - 4/5
Lionsgate presents Mr. Church with a solid MPEG-4/AVC transfer. The film was shot using the now-standard Arri Alexa cameras, and the result gives off a professional and highly-detailed picture. And yet there isn't a lot of pop here, even when the drama goes outdoors. There is a warm sheen to Church, so it always looks a tad under gorgeous. Human features like details in hair, skin, and clothing are good (but not great). There aren't a lot of opportunities for darks and shadows to play, ad where they do be careful for a ton of noise. I can concur with other reviews that the scene around 18:00 is particularly problematic.

The Audio - 4/5
Mr. Church plays through a nice DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that's bolstered by moments of jazz music - a favorite of the lead character. But there's little else here to demonstrate the track's power or beauty, relying on clear dialogue in the center but only decent surrounds. The LFE never gets much to do, settle for an odd bump or thump here or there. It's good but unimpressive, doing its job without have much to do.

The Supplements - 1.5/5
The worst portion of this release gives us barely enough supplements to notice. At least all of them are presented in HD:
  • Britt Robertson (3:52): This featurette profiles the actress, with interviews, moments from the film, and various behind the scenes footage.
  • Eddie Murphy Doing a Drama (3:56).
  • Food on Film (1:14)
  • Based on a True Friendship (3:31): Perhaps the best of the lot, this featurette focuses on Screenwriter Susan McMartin, who is apparently where the story is based.
  • Our evaluation copy arrived as a Blu-ray/Digital HD Combo Pack. The smooth slipcase doesn't do much, but at least one was provided. There is no interior artwork; and at the time of this posting, we were unaware of any special editions.

    The Bottom Line - 2.5/5
For all its treacly blandness, Mr. Church at least succeeds in the sense of showing that Murphy is open to the possibility of appearing in something more than prepackaged commercial junk. There is a refreshing lack of fat suits and farting animals here that sets it apart from the dross the actor had toiled in time and again for far too long. This was clearly not a movie that bought Eddie Murphy a new house. It’s disposable, utterly forgettable, but perhaps it will stand as the underwhelming first step in an ultimately more ambitious second wind for one of cinema’s most adrift greats. He could try a lot harder than he does in Mr. Church, but at least he tried at all. Video and audio are solid but unimpressive. If you any interest in seeing it, consider a rental first.

    Movie Review: #BLEEDFORTHIS

    This ain't no Rocky!

    Rama is back.

The problem with BLEED FOR THIS is that the true story behind it is way more fascinating than the film itself which unfortunately doesn’t get to be anything more than mundane. After having seen countless other comeback underdog themed films in the past, BLEED FOR THIS just seems so uninspired.

Miles Teller plays Vinny “The Pazmanian Devil” Pazienza, a boxer who shot to stardom after winning 2 world title fights. He’s at the top of his game. But a near fatal car crash leaves him with spinal injury so bad the doctors think he may never walk again. But with the help of stubbornness and his trainer, Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart), Vinny proves everybody wrong and not only does he get to walk again, he ultimately returns to the ring and reclaims his title belt. It’s been deemed as one of the most incredible comebacks in sports history.

As I said earlier, the true story of Vinny and how he defied all odds is fascinating, I mean the guy actually had metals screwed in to his head and shoulders, the damage would make even people with faith be skeptical of Vinny’s recovery. So the fact that he ended up boxing again was nothing short of a miracle. But the film unfortunately is too textbook, there’s nothing authentic about writer/director Ben Younger’s approach, even the way it presents some of the characters’ personal demons, they come across like some kind of caricatures. Which is a shame because I commend Younger for taking a risk on the guy who usually plays the funny friend (“Footloose,” “Divergent”) and was part of that horrible “Fantastic Four” reboot, Miles Teller. I think gambling on Teller was the right move on Younger, Teller in my opinion does his job, maybe not to the extent that De Niro did his in “Raging Bull,” but Teller provides a much needed intensity. The kid’s got talent. I can’t say the same for the rest of the actors around him that are too busy trying to look and talk and walk like they’re local Providence. BLEED FOR THIS is what happens when a script plays it too much by the book and plays it safe, what you get is a film that doesn’t move you; a film that lacks imagination and excitement.

Official Trailer For Justice League Dark

Dark Universe, exploring the supernatural side of DC Comics, is in development as a feature by director Doug Liman, but fans will get their first look at some of its potential team members with the animated film Justice League Dark, being released on Blu-ray and for digital download in early 2017. And which just happens to be the recipient of a new trailer.

Over the course of the film, Batman (voiced by Jason O’Mara) is drawn into the world of the occult by Deadman (Nicholas Turturro), which in turn leads him to the likes of Jason Blood/Etrigan (Ray Chase), Felix Faust (Enrico Colantoni), Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), Destiny (Alfred Molina) and John Constantine (Matt Ryan, reprising his role from the live action Constantine series).

Director Jay Oliva, who also directed the two-part animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, feels that the strength of Justice League Dark is that they’re dealing with a different kind of team than fans might be used to, particularly in terms of genre. “I wanted to do a horror film more than just the usual superhero film,” he explains. “It’s still an action film, but I wanted to have horror elements and really play up the supernatural aspect. The other thing was that if you’ve seen my films, I usually have highly choreographed fight sequences, and now I was thinking, ‘What do I do with that now with the magic aspect?’ I love Final Fantasy and video games and anime, so I looked at all of my references and thought, 'This is what they did, now how do I bring that to the DC Universe to do something really different that’s pushed? That maybe DC fans have never seen before, at least not in this context, and bring that to these characters?' Because of magic, anything goes, which is very freeing to me.”

Obviously very freeing, considering that in America the film has been hit with an "R" rating, the only DC animated film besides Batman: The Killing Joke to do so.

Movie Review: LOVING Uplifting, Beautiful, & Heartfelt. #ThisIsLoving

LOVING is an uplifting, important film that will be cherished for generations. Both Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga disappear in their characters, among the most deeply-affecting performances this year. And writer/director Jeff Nichols once again proves his storytelling prowess.

    Rama is back again.

Based on the true story of interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving who were punished by law and ultimately banished from their hometown for getting married. They spent the next nine years fighting for their right to raise their family there. It’s a case that went all the way to the supreme court and resulted in the landmark civil rights decision invalidating any laws that prohibit interracial marriage.

What I’ve always admired about writer/director Jeff Nichols is that he’s more interested in the human factor. Even when his film could be about mystery adventure like “Midnight Special,” the focus remains centered around how two or three characters affect each other. The same goes with LOVING. The film could’ve easily detoured on to the arguments presented at the Supreme court, it could’ve shown more bigotry and discrimination that were unfortunately indeed prevalent in that area at that time, it could’ve chosen to be overdramatic as well. But that’s not the case with Jeff Nichols. He doesn’t go for big epic set pieces, it’s all about the relationships for him. From beginning to end, LOVING is about Richard and Mildred, and yes, although this is about interracial marriage, even more so than that, this film actually speaks about marriage in general. How a husband treats his wife and vice versa, even in times of disagreements. From start to end, the film feels so up close and personal.

If you’ve seen photos of Richard and Mildred Loving and then you see Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga’s portrayal, they’re like carbon copies, it’s the most perfect casting, in my opinion, since Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film, “Lincoln.” But not only the appearance. Richard has that shyness to him, he just wants his family to be left alone, and he takes care of Mildred, he’s the great provider. And so Edgerton understands that he has to capture those nuances. The same with Negga. Mildred feels devastated by the idea that she’s not allowed to raise her children at her hometown, and that frustration is evident all over Negga. These are two actors who aren’t even Americans, but manage to carry this piece of American history that essentially has become a monumental inspiration to couples ever since. Complimented by composer David Wingo’s calmed yet genuine music and Adam Stone’s exquisite cinematography, LOVING for certain will leave a lasting mark.

Movie Review: THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN does for this generation what John Hughes’ movies did for the ‘80s and what “She’s All That” did for the ‘90s

RAMA comes through with another great review.

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN does for this generation what John Hughes’ movies did for the ‘80s and what “She’s All That” did for the ‘90s. This movie is so funny, you may end up rolling on the floor literally. Hailee Steinfeld nails those awkward teenage years spot on. And so clear your plans this weekend to make room for THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN marks the feature directorial debut of writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig who superbly wrote this wonderful hilarious coming-of-age story that’s candid and unadulterated. Hailee Steinfeld plays high school junior named Nadine who’s already having a hard time with awkwardness and fitting in but things get even tougher when her best friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her older brother, Darian (Blake Jenner). Feeling more alone than ever, Nadine finds new friendship in Hayden Szeto’s character, Erwin, a thoughtful student who turns out has had a crush on Nadine for quite some time.

I knew this movie had something special when I heard that the legendary producer James L. Brooks (“Terms of an Endearment,” “As Good As It Gets”) was involved. Whenever Brooks believes in a project, then that deserves my attention because Brooks knows funny and Craig’s script is all that and a bag of flaming hot potato chips. THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN gives you an honest look at what teenagers in the suburbs deal with these days. And much of it is thanks to Hailee Steinfeld’s performance that can’t get any more real and authentic. As Nadine, Steinfeld makes Malcolm In The Middle look twice as clueless.

You wouldn’t believe half the things that come out of all the characters’ mouths because the things they say are so blunt and so spontaneous and edgy and unapologetic, they’re like curve ball thrown at you. And Steinfeld is surrounded by equally appealing talents like Kyra Sedgwick, Blake Jenner, Haley Lu Richardson, Hayden Szeto, you can’t keep your eyes off of them. Not to mention Woody Harrelson in what I think his best role yet as the sarcastic teacher who reluctantly helps Nadine figure herself out. All of these actors completely understand their respective characters, they totally get who they are and so all Craig had to do is roll the cameras and just let them run with it. I guarantee you’ll feel grateful that you’ve watched THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN.

    Blu-ray Review: @BadMoms

Bad Moms is a naughty, nasty, raunchfest that doesn't quite deliver on Blu-ray.

    Review by Matt Cummings

As we headed into the home stretch for the Summer 2016 box office, one thing was abundantly clear: it was the worst in terms of quality releases as far back as I've been writing about it. Luckily, Bad Moms arrived to make that long list of trash a bit more bearable while establishing itself as potentially the sleeper hit of the year. And yet its message is one that I hope doesn't resonate with stressed out moms ready to party it up at the expense of their children. Sadly, the home release doesn't fare as well, displaying good audio, decent video, and a disappointing lack of extras.

For stressed-out mom Amy (Mila Kunis), every day is spent rushing to parent meetings, working full-time hours at her part-time job, and trying to get her husband to actually do some parenting along the way. But when her marriage suddenly ends over a long-time affair, Amy is forced to take on her entitled kids, house, dog, and the pressures of a bake sale headed by bitchy PTA president Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate). Soon, the pressures become too much and Amy finds herself quitting the PTA and drinking in a bar with two other moms: the overly-sensitive Kiki (Kristen Bell) and the scantly-clad loudmouth Carla (Kathryn Hahn). The trio begin to question their roles as parents, and soon find themselves behaving badly (cut to slo-mo gratuitous supermarket scene) while at the same time refusing to make their teenage children breakfast or lunch any longer, while boozing it up and returning to more favored activities like reading the paper and enjoying a quiet breakfast. But when Gwendolyn learns of Amy's 'betrayal' she plots to destroy her child's chance to play soccer, forcing Amy to run against Gwendolyn for PTA president. The results will upend the very nature of what moms do for their children and free Amy's trio to live a more balanced life.

Bad Moms takes on an uncomfortable truth: that years of overly-protecting our children, handing out medals for participation instead of results, and doting them has actually made them soft and entitled. From there, Directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore wage a war against those children and the moms responsible by pushing Kunis and Bell into literary corners and then giving them a sledgehammer to bash their way out. Luckily, the comedy is so terrific and the chemistry right on that we can forgive any dire underlying message about marriage equality, sexual roles, and "Who's to blame." But consider that perhaps the funniest movie of the year so far - a movie about being perfect parents and the whole "reap what you sow" philosophy - is directed & written not by women but men. That might not mean anything, or it could mean everything depending on how you see the today's world evolving. For Moore and Lucas, the message is right on, even if that is sometimes shouted from the highest roof in multiple directions and times.

Bad Moms is squarely centered around Kunis and her breakdown, but Hahn and Bell deliver great caricature performances of moms we've all had the displeasure of knowing: the one with self-esteem issues and the cougar who doesn't even try to be good until Kiki and Amy show her how the error of her ways. They really do offer three sides to the story, with each one right and wrong in their approaches. Hahn emerges the best here, but Bell is also thoroughly likable; Kunis' Amy is just a little too dour to be placed front and center, mostly because Moore and Lucas don't delve too much into Kiki and Carla's lives. Applegate is great as Gwendolyn, a conniving bitch who actually moves up the food chain with two great scenes at film's end. She too is a mom on the edge, stressed out with the roles inherent i raising children, and her redemption plays extremely well.

Bad Moms doesn't break the mold of either The Hangover or Bridesmaids, sticking to slo-mo shots of milk pouring on the supermarket floor, moms making out, etc. Luckily, the film does find the right time to turn up the joke meter while returning everyone to a sense of normalcy by the end. As Amy delivers a rather dull “I’m not a perfect mother, and that’s OK,” speech during the PTA elections, Moore and Lucas rescue us from the malaise with a hilarious bit in which several moms stand up to admit their parenting errors. And with all of this going on, Bad Moms still succeeds because its underlying message is so craftily assembled. No matter what our children say, they want their parents involved in their lives, from attending baseball games to piano recitals. Whether they need them to be at all of them and whether moms take on too many responsibilities is a subject Bad Moms exceeds at investigating.

And yet, I worry that the message behind Bad Moms is so far out of whack that some lesser moms will treat it as an excuse to be bad, just because Hollywood said it was now OK. I doubt that was the message our creative team meant to hand out with all the laughs, genitals, and bad behavior in the supermarket. And yet with female roles seemingly changing every day, I hope the message moves the pendulum right to where it needs to be: the middle. Perhaps if it didn't also paint men in only three behavioral colors - the coach potato cheater (David Walton), the flighty boss, the gorgeous hunk (Jessie Hernandez) - I might have felt better about its message. No mom (or dad) can be the 'perfect parent,' no matter the money or time one has. As social media continues to place a microscope on every action a parent takes, it becomes increasingly difficult for either side to know what is "fair parenting" or not. If Bad Moms can be criticized for one thing, it's the grenade they throw in the room without sticking around to help parents figure out what to do.

    The Video - 3.5/5
Bad Moms is presented by Universal Studios but fails to make the digitally-shot movie look as good as it could. Granted, we're talking about a comedy here but the lack of clarity (featuring an almost fuzzy appearance) becomes apparent as soon as the Universal logo appears. Clothing also suffers, looking more diffused than razor sharp, something that you never see in even the most modest of Blu-ray releases. That sort of treatment never presented itself in the theatrical version, and it's odd to see Universal drop the ball here. Colors are presentable, never over-saturating but at the same time failing to do anything special. Shadows and blacks are also affected, smudging off into the night rather than presenting a solid transition. This is honestly one of the worst releases for a major studio that I've seen since Bucky Larson: Born to Be A Star, and that's saying a lot.

    The Audio - 4/5
Luckily, Bad Moms is raring to go in the audio department, delivering an impressive DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 experience. Wait a second: did you say 7.1? How is this possible with such a mediocre video transfer? Well, you won't be asking yourself that as you try to process this rather boisterous track. Music fares the best here, thumping at the LFE like a MILF pounding on the next door neighbor's boy. Aggressive isn't quite the word here, but it gets close. Engine sounds from Amy's muscle car are particularly Jack Reacher-like, but even the surrounds have something to say. They feature crowd noise and school drop-off chatter. Dialogue is squared right where it should be - in the center channel - and you'll never find yourseld straining to hear it. If only the video department had made the same effort, we could have been talking about a different impression.

    The Supplements - 1.5/5
Featuring the bare minimum of supplements, Bad Moms offers the following, all in HD:
  • Gag Reel (6:02)
  • Deleted Scenes (16:36): None of the sections are titled, and you cannot play them individually.
  • Cast & Mom Interviews (23:52): Perhaps the best thing here are the cast and their mothers discussing various subjects. As a set, they're a bit long to sit through, but their insights might interest you.
  • Our evaluation copy arrived as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack. The presence of a slipcase is appreciated, as is the voucher for a UV/iTunes Digital Copy. At the time of this post, we were not aware of any special versions.

    The Bottom Line - 3.5/5
Bad Moms is one of the funniest and unabashedly unforgiving comedies of the past few years. In a male-dominated society which seems to be tipping back to a (necessary) balance, it's refreshing to see an all-female comedy that also doesn't treat men like the newest plague (see The Intern). Hahn ups this film's street cred by turning in one of the best comedic performances in years, even though the movie's message that no mother is truly "good" or perfect is a bit heavy-handed in parts. Let's just hope that moms around the country don't take the wild fun to heart and head out for a bender without at least securing babysitters for their children. I can see that happening, just between you and me.

The home release is a mixed bag for sure. The audio is terrific, but everything else from the usually-reliable Universal is a disappointment. WHile I understand the genre as a whole might not be reference-quality, studios have a duty to provide audiences with the best products they can make. Had the original version suffered some sort of serious digital meltdown, I might have given Universal a break. Not here. I can't recommend Bad Moms as a purchase, even though I loved the film. But check it out on rental - you might be more forgiving.

Bad Moms is rated R for sexual material, full frontal nudity, language throughout, and drug and alcohol content and has a runtime of 101 minutes.

Variety is reporting Warner Bros. is getting close to making the first big casting for its “Minecraft” movie: Steve Carell.

Carell is in talks to join the ensemble of the studio’s big-screen adaptation of the popular video game. Rob McElhenney is on board to direct the pic. McElhenney also penned the latest draft with “Wonder Woman” scribe Jason Fuchs.

Warner Bros. had no comment on the casting.

Warner Bros. acquired film rights to the video game franchise in February from Swedish developer Mojang AB and set up the project with Roy Lee through his Vertigo Entertainment production company, along with Jill Messick (“Mean Girls”).

The game, which debuted in 2009, allows players to create their own avatars and build an environment using textured cubes in a 3D world as they battle nocturnal monsters. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode, creative mode, and adventure mode.

Magnolia Pictures will release I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO in theaters February 3, 2017

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of this manuscript.

Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.

“One of the best movies you are likely to see this year. A THRILLING DOCUMENTARY. Brilliantly edited, I Am Not Your Negro moves across time and space, seamlessly – insistently – sliding from the historical civil rights movement to more recent events. Mr. Peck is a consummate filmmaker who deserves a larger American audience. He’ll get it when I Am Not Your Negro Opens.”
    – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

    “A TRANSCENDENT DOCUMENTARY”
    – Owen Gleiberman, Variety

“A cinematic séance, and one of the best movies about the civil rights era ever made.”
    – Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

“A fascinating and gorgeous and very powerful film.”
    – Bob Mondello, NPR

“An act of provocation, and of prophecy.”
“IT SHOULD BE REQUIRED VIEWING FOR ALL AMERICANS”

Rock royalty including Jeff Beck, ELO, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Def Leppard, Richie Sambora, Cheap Trick attended the event and gave YOSHIKI rave reviews for his performance featuring classical renditions of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and X JAPAN's masterpiece "Art Of Life."

"So many artists in Asia are going overseas and Asian rock is growing worldwide. About X JAPAN:
X Japan is the most successful rock band in Japanese history, and that is not a statement made lightly. The band has sold more than 30 million albums; singles and videos combined, sold out Japan's 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome 18 times - so far - and have played to tens of thousands of fans outside of Japan. In the band's early days their look and sound sparked a global interest in entertainment, especially with the Japanese cultural rock phenomenon, "Visual-Kei," a movement X Japan pioneered that spread globally. X Japan formed in 1982 (calling themselves X) by Yoshiki and Toshi while they were still teenagers. Over the next 13 years, the band released five studio albums--Vanishing Vision (1988), Blue Blood (1989), Jealousy (1991), Art of Life (1993) and Dahlia (1996), as well as six live albums, ten best hits albums and 20 DVD releases. X Japan was the first Japanese band to achieve mainstream success while signed to an independent label. The band was so popular they became a cultural phenomenon.

In the fall of 1997, at the height of their success, the band broke up. Four months later, Hide, X Japan's original lead guitarist, was found dead in his Tokyo apartment. At his funeral, more than 50,000 fans came to mourn his passing. In early 2007 Yoshiki and Toshi resumed communication and later that year X Japan officially reformed. The band launched its reunion in 2008 with 3 nights at the Tokyo Dome. 2 years later, X Japan filmed a music video on the rooftop of Hollywood's Dolby Theatre with a throng of some 8,000 U.S. fans taking part in the shoot on Hollywood Blvd. But it was on August 8, 2010 that X Japan performed in front of a mainstream American crowd for the first time at Lollapalooza. Immediately following the festival, X Japan played the biggest concert in its history, selling out two consecutive shows at Japan's Nissan Stadium, filling 140,000 seats. The band's first North American tour wrapped with a monumental New York date selling out The Roseland Ballroom on Oct. 11, 2010.

In June 2011, X Japan kicked off a European Tour at London's Shepherd's Bush (selling -out the venue in 30 minutes). The tour continued to Paris and Utrecht wrapping in Berlin before the band traveled back to Japan to play the famed Summer Sonic Festival. That same year the world tour took them to South America where they sold out shows playing to massive crowds in Santiago, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Lima and Mexico City. X Japan then returned to Asia playing arena shows in Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei and Bangkok. In 2012 X Japan was the first Japanese band to take home the prize for "Best International Band" at the Golden Gods Awards held in the U.S. In 2014 X Japan headlined a colossal show at New York's famed Madison Square Garden in the U.S. Now, in 2016, X Japan is gearing up for the biggest event in the band's history. The current line-up of X Japan is Yoshiki/drums, piano; Toshi/vocals; Pata/guitars; Heath/bass; and Sugizo/guitars,violin. X Japan recently announced the release of the band's 1st new studio album in 20 years, which will be available in worldwide release in 2017.

Voice actress Stephanie Sheh reprises her leading role of Usagi Tsukino / Sailor Moon along with actor Robbie Daymond as Mamoru Chiba / Tuxedo Mask. Newcomer Ben Diskin will voice the role of the film’s villain, Fiore.

In the film, long before Mamoru found his destiny with Usagi, he gave a single rose in thanks to a lonely boy who helped him recover from the crash that claimed his parents. This long-forgotten friend, Fiore, has been searching the galaxy for a flower worthy of that sweet gesture long ago. The mysterious flower he finds is beautiful, but has a dark side - it has the power to take over planets. To make matters worse, the strange plant is tied to an ominous new asteroid near Earth! Faced with an enemy blooming out of control, it’s up to Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians to band together, stop the impending destruction and save Mamoru!

In the MAKE UP! SAILOR GUARDIANS short, Usagi and Chibi-Usa are at a cafe when they overhear two girls debating which one of the Sailor Guardians is the best. Will Usagi’s alter-ego, Sailor Moon, end up being their favorite? Fans will not want to miss the answer!
