Daniel Craig To Star In Cowboys and Aliens

Daniel Craig To Star In Cowboys and Aliens

As we wrote before that Dainel Craig may star in the upcoming film. It has been confirmed he will star in the movie.

Daniel Craig has closed his deal to star in Cowboys and Aliens for DreamWorks and Universal, as I predicted. Craig will star in an adaptation of Fred Van Lente's graphic novel that was published by Platinum Studios and revolves around cowboys and Native Americans who put aside their Old West differences to battle invading aliens. Craig will play the lead cowboy Zeke Jackson, replacing Robert Downey Jr who exited to jump right back to the Sherlock Holmes sequel. While he likely won't identify himself as "Jackson, Zeke Jackson," Craig has put himself in an enviable position: Cowboys and Aliens has franchise potential. And it will keep him busy while the James Bond/MGM situation plays out. Brian Grazer is producing with Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and Platinum Studios' Scott Mitchell Rosenberg.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo UK Trailer

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo UK Trailer

I Reported about a week ago about about the film being released in the UK, and now we know that Sony Pictures is developing a US version of the Novel and film.

the original Swedish version of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO a.k.a Män som hatar kvinnor (strangely enough translated into ‘Men Who Hate Women’), will hit our theaters in select cities this Spring.

Here is the UK Trailer for the film.

The story, for those of you who don't read, focuses on two characters. Investigative reporter Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) has been convicted of libel and, his career in ruins, accepts an offer from a wealthy recluse to write a family history. Researcher and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) agrees to help him - but her troubled past means that she has more serious problems than merely sorting through family records.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is out on March 12 here in the UK, followed by The Girl Who Played With Fire on September 10 and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest on November 5. None of these should be confused with The Girl With The Pearl Earring, which has much less computer hacking, or My Girl, which has considerably less crime.

M. Night Shyamalan Talks Avatar: The Last Airbender

M. Night Shyamalan Talks Avatar: The Last Airbender

And now for that other "Avatar" movie...

For M. Night Shyamalan, it was his then 7-year old daughter who hooked him on the Nickelodeon series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

“She made us watch as a family and all four of us were hooked, “ Shyamalan said. “I was like, 'This would make a killer movie. And my wife who really has been kind of in neutral about my career was insane about it. Insane about it: ‘You have to do it. This is it. This is the one.' ”

M Night Shyamalan by Jennifer S Altman Ever since he shot to stardom with his film “The Sixth Sense” in 1999, Hollywood has tempted Shyamalan with franchise offers including, he says, an overture about directing the first “Harry Potter” film. He turned down all the other offers, but “Airbender,” with its fusion of Eastern philosophies and martial arts grabbed him. The series is set in a world where the four ancient elements -- fire, earth, water and air -- can be manipulated by a select group of magical humans who are known as "benders."

The brutal firebenders, known as the Fire Nation, are intent on world domination and the only thing standing in their way is 12-year old Aang, the last of the airbenders, who also happens to be the Avatar -- the only one who can wield all four of the elemental groups.

Not unlike a pre-teen, martial-arts version of the Dalai Lama, the fun-loving Aang is charged with keeping peace in the universe. Now comes Shyamalan’s big-screen adaptation “The Last Airbender” (no surprise, the film will drop "Avatar" from the title because of the success of a certain recent film with a smiliar title), the first of a planned trilogy.

Airbender on Nick

The movie hits theaters on July 2 and stars Noah Ringer as Aang, Dev Patel (of “Slumdog Millionaire") as the evil Prince Zuko. Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone portray Aang’s trusty comrades-in-arms.

The 39-year old Shyamalan, once the boy wonder of Hollywood, is coming off a series of disappointing films, including “Lady in the Water” and “The Happening,” and this is the first time he’s directed a film based on pre-exististing source material. The filmmaker is taking on an adaptation for the first time because he found himself drawn to the Buddhist philosophy that underlies “Airbender.”

“Aang himself needs to find balance to be the Avatar and to master each of these elements," the director said. "We get to see the process of someone mastering themselves through the three seasons to get to peace.”

Shyamalan sees similar spiritual motiffs in “Star Wars” and “The Matrix."

“In the first 'Matrix,' you realize that what you’re seeing is all false," Shyamalan said. "Those are really ancient ideas. Basic old, old religion. This has that as well. So if you go on the journey and you’ll feel that epiphany on top of a great roller-coaster ride. It’s going to be something.“

Star Trek's Zachary Quinto Clears The Air About Star Trek 2

Star Trek's Zachary Quinto Clears The Air About Star Trek 2

Star Trek's Zachary Quinto is clarifying remarks he made to Wired that he was taking a break from the franchise for two years.

Here's what he said:
"I'm stepping away from Star Trek for at least two years—no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while," Quinto told Wired.com in a telephone interview. His planned absence from geekdom was a major motivation for doing the new game. "I did this game to make an investment in the fan base," the actor said.

But on his Twitter feed Thursday, Quinto elaborated on what he meant:

to clarify: i've been inundated w/questions/confusion about a comment i made during an interview w/ @wired re: atari star trek online game in which i said i'm stepping away from trek for next 2 yrs. obviously, i'll be a part of any upcoming films, reprising my role as spock.

what i meant was that in the meantime i won't be making appearances related to the franchise or doing auxiliary projects in trek universe.

i'll be focusing my efforts on other projects & preparing to shoot the next film, which will be released in june of 2012... 2 yrs from now.

worry not trekkers. it was a misunderstanding of context. i am not spock. but i am spock. all at the same time. ll & p. zq.

Quinto provides the voice of a holographic doctor, the Emergency Medical Hologram Mark VI, in the new Star Trek Online MMO, but doesn't voice Spock, Wired reported.

Maria Bello And Russell Crowe Have "Emergency Sex," For HBO

Maria Bello And Russell Crowe Have "Emergency Sex," For HBO

Maria Bello has teamed with Oscar winners Simon Beaufoy and Russell Crowe for a series project in the works at HBO.

Bello is set to star in the drama "Emergency Sex," which is being written by "Slumdog Millionaire" scribe Beaufoy and executive produced by Bello, Beaufoy and Crowe.

Inspired by the book "Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures: A True Story From Hell on Earth," by Kenneth Cain, Heidi Postlewait and Andrew Thomson, the project revolves around the larger-than-life exploits of expatriate nongovernment-organization workers who find their sanity tested in the face of atrocities, loneliness and primal desires.

The book chronicles the real-life experiences of Cain, Postlewait and Thomson, who met in Cambodia during the 1990s as members of a UN peacekeeping mission.

In addition to Crowe -- who purchased rights to the book for a screen adaptation -- Bello and Beaufoy, "Emergency" is produced by Bello's manager, John Carrabino.

Crowe's development executive, Keith Rodger, is expected to serve as producer on the project.

Bello ("A History of Violence") has a long-standing relationship with HBO.

"Emergency" would mark the series debut for feature writer Beaufoy, whose next collaboration with "Slumdog" director Danny Boyle, "127 Hours," is slated to begin filming this year.

Miramax Is No More. Shut Down

Miramax Is No More. Shut Down

But a lot of other people around the movie business mourned the impending loss of a label that once set the bar for taste and artistry. (Update Thursday: A Disney spokeswoman called to protest that Miramax is not 'dead.' "Miramax will consoldiate its operations within Walt Disney Studios, and will be releasing a smaller number of films than in previous years. But it will continue to operate within the Walt Disney Studios," she said.)

Over 31 years, the movie company that for most of its existence was led by founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein brought the public enduring stories that plumbed the depths of human emotion (“My Left Foot”) and pushed the boundaries of cultural barriers (“Reservoir Dogs”).

When we think of the movies that defined the latter part of the 20th century -- the movies that mattered, that stories that hit pop culture like a hammer and left a dent -- more often than not they came from Miramax.

“The Piano.” “Pulp Fiction.” “Sex, Lies and Videotape.” “Clerks.” “The English Patient.”
“Kill Bill I and II.” “The Ciderhouse Rules.” “Good Will Hunting.” “Swingers.”

All too often, we may find ourselves saying: Why doesn’t Hollywood make those movies anymore?

Maybe the movie industry doesn’t know how to. Miramax, for well over a decade, was something special.

“Miramax wasn't just a bad-boy clubhouse, it was a 20th century Olympus,” filmmaker Kevin Smith wrote to TheWrap. “Throw a can of Diet Coke and you hit a modern-day deity. And for one brief, shining moment, it was an age of magic and wonders.” (Read Kevin Smith's full Hollyblog.)

With these in the vault: “Shakespeare in Love” (Oscar: Gwyneth Paltrow). “The Crying Game” (Oscar, Neil Jordan). “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (5 noms). “Chicago” (6 Oscar wins).

“If there was any company that contributed more to the shaping of a generation and a sensibility -- I don’t know it,” said veteran publicist Fredell Pogodin, lamenting the closure.

There were lots of overambitious flops, or movies that tried too hard -- “The Aviator.” “The Shipping News.” “The Four Feathers.” “Cold Mountain.”

The story of Miramax has been told and retold: Scrappy New York brothers name the studio after their parents, wheel and deal to hold their movie company together, bully business partners, seduce filmmakers and spend loads of money on Oscar campaigns.

Then came the sale to Disney. The success, the hubris, the Oscars, the overspending. The loss of identity, the desperate attempts to reconcile with Michael Eisner followed by the bitter divorce, and the quiet takeover by Daniel Battsek.

The final chapter has been short and bitter.

Battsek was squeezed to a smaller and smaller size by Disney, despite releasing some respectable movies including “The Queen,” “Tsotsi” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”

The studio endured endless rumors of its impending closure. On Oct. 2, Disney announced that “Miramax Films will reduce the number of films it releases annually while consolidating certain of its operations.”

Harvey Weinstein said:

"I'm feeling very nostalgic right now. I know the movies made on my and my brother Bob's watch will live on as well as the fantastic films made under the direction of Daniel Battsek. Miramax has some brilliant people working within the organization and I know they will go on to do great things in the industry."

The Weinsteins have tried to buy the name of their former company back. Disney has not responded. But Bob Iger has made it known that he would be willing to sell Miramax outright -- for about $1.5 billion.

Too rich for the Weinsteins, and probably anybody else.

So on Thursday, one more arthouse film outlet goes away.

Porn In 3D, Are You Ready?

Porn In 3D, Are You Ready?

Should have seen this one coming. Porn in 3D, why has it taken them so long to jump on this bandwagon.

Longtime Italian erotic film director Tinto Brass on Thursday announced that he would produce what he called the world's first-ever 3D pornographic production.

Brass, 76, best known for his 1979 film "Caligula," which he directed in collaboration with noted author Gore Vidal and magazine publisher Bob Guccione, said the time is right for 3D technologies to be used to create an erotic film. He noted that the project, which he said will be the world's first 3D erotic film, will also be the first 3D film of any type made in Italy.

Brass said that with the film he plans to "revisit an abandoned project about a Roman emperor that was ruined by Americans, and go from there," a reference to "Caligula," which he has criticized because of hard-core sex scenes added during postproduction without his consent.

He said he would start work on casting and the script immediately, and that he planned to start filming in May or June.

Zac Efron Heading Into The "Fire"

Zac Efron Heading Into The "Fire"

The list of young actors who transition to adult leading men isn’t that long... Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Christian Bale, etc. Zac Efron is hoping to make that transition so he’s linked himself to a pair of projects he hopes will give him the chance to broaden his range. One of them would be his first action turn, in a Ludlum-esque spy thriller. Efron has a just made a deal at Universal for
Fire, an adaptation of a graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis that was published by Image Comics.

The plan is for Efron to play a college student who is recruited by the CIA, only to find that he has been trained for a program that creates expendable agents. Bendis, the fanboy favorite whose comic book creations include "Ultimate Spider-Man", will write the script. While little material moves during Sundance, Efron and Bendis got the deal after they schlepped around to three studios, pitching the project on a rainy day last Friday. The project has the steady hand of Neal Moritz, who’ll produce with Circle of Confusion’s David Engel. Efron and Alchemy Entertainment’s Jason Barrett will be exec producers.

Carey Mulligan) blames Gekko for her brother Rudy's suicide, she avoids any contact with him. At the same time, the mentor(Lewis Zabel) of young Wall Street trader Jacob(Shia LaBeouf) unexpectedly dies, and Jacob suspects his hedge fund manager of being involved in the death. Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson, who penned the Vince Vaughn-Reese Witherspoon comedy "Four Christmases," are on board to write.

"Poop" is a witty guidebook by Beverly Hills-based pediatrician Scott W. Cohen. Scribner is publishing the book March 30.

The first book of a planned series is a common sense guide for parents with newborns. It also follows Cohen's experiences raising his own child, which in many ways defied much of what he learned in medical school and ultimately altered how he advises his patients.

The Comedy Store Film To Be Produced By Tom Hanks

The Comedy Store Film To Be Produced By Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks is quietly developing a movie based partially on the life of Mitzi Shore. Yes: She is Pauly Shore’s Mom, but she also founded L.A. Comedy Store, which is in fact where a lot of older generation comedians got their start, like David Letterman and Jay Leno. If you’re a popular comedian in your late 40s or 50s, chances are, you worked The Comedy Store at some point, and that list includes Eddie Murphy, Tim Allem, Bob Saget, Chevy Chase, Jim Belushi, Jim Carrey, etc., etc.

The narrative arc of the story, which is based on William Knoedelseder’s nonfiction book, I’m Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Stand-up Comedy’s Golden Era , focuses on the years around 1978 and Mitzi Shore’s policy of not paying comics for their stand-up performances. Her theory was that The Comedy Store was something of a training ground — a college for comedians, a workshop for new material — and she felt no obligation to pay for their acts besides providing free drinks. Meanwhile, she made a fortune off of their efforts, despite the fact that many of those comics were living in their cars and surviving on fast-food condiments.

At some point, things came to a head: The comedians went on strike, and the comics were pitted against Mitzi Shore, though many of those new union members also turned on themselves. Things took a turn for the tragic when a comic, Steve Lubetkin, was prohibited from performing at the club after going on strike. He, in turn, committed suicide by jumping off of a hotel across the street and leaving a suicide note that read, “My name is Steve Lubetkin. I used to work at the Comedy Store.”

It sounds like a promising premise for a film, and it’s already being pitched as something akin to The Late Shift. It’s out for writers now, and if the script is strong enough, I actually think I’m Dying Up Here would make for a compelling movie, and it’d be interesting to see a younger generation of actors playing the parts of iconic comedians and, probably, quite a few of those comedians making cameo appearances. I’m not sure who would make up the central figures in the film, besides Mitzi Shore, Lubetkin, and likely, Richard Lewis, who was close to Lubetkin. But, with the sudden popularity of the evil boss — Glen Close in “Damages” or Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada — the role of Mitzi Shore could be a plum one, plus it’d be kind of neat to see — even recreated — a time when Leno and Letterman once palled around.

I might also note that it’s interesting that Tom Hanks’ production company would be making this film, since Hanks himself is one of the best late-night guests on any of those shows. I’ve never seen him in Leno, but he has incredible repartee with both Letterman and Conan. Plus, it might give Hanks a chance to atone for the failure of Punchline back in ‘88.

Alice In Wonderland Images and Featurette

Alice In Wonderland Images and Featurette

Disney Pictures has released some new concept art and pictures for the upcoming Time Burton's Alice In Wonderland. Also I included a short featurette for you to enjoy.

Disney has declared every Wednesday until the film comes out "Wonderland Wednesdays." So enjoy.

THE KNAVE OF HEARTS (Crispin Glover) is the head of the Red Queen’s Army. Seven feet, six-inches tall, with a scarred face and a heart-shaped patch covering his left eye, Stayne is an arrogant, tricky character who follows the Red Queen’s every order. He’s the only one capable of pacifying her and calming her dramatic mood swings. “I am the martial element for the Red Queen,” says Glover. “The Red Queen has a fair amount of short-tempered reactions to things that people do, and so my character has to be quite diplomatic.” His darker side emerges in the shadows of the castle hallways.

THE WHITE RABBIT (voice of Michael Sheen) is always late, always in a hurry, always rushing about. Charged with finding Alice and bringing her back to Underland so that she can fulfill her destiny, he shows up at her garden party in an effort to lure her back down the rabbit hole. “He’s a warm character,” says Sheen, “but, at the same time, he can be quite fussy and quite strict with Alice as well. He has an edge to him, a nervous energy, always feeling like he’s behind time. Time is very important to him, but he’s quite brave when called upon.”

THE CATERPILLAR (voice of Alan Rickman) is the all-knowing and absolute guardian of the Oraculum, an ancient document that depicts every major event, past, present and future, in Underland’s history. Alice is taken by the White Rabbit and the Tweedles to meet Absolem, so that he can ascertain whether she is, in fact, the real Alice who first visited Underland as a child, the Alice who is destined to help them. They find the bulbous blue caterpillar atop a mushroom in a mushroom forest surrounded by misty smoke. Several times Absolem challenges Alice to come to a better understanding of herself, forcing her to face the difficult question: “Who are you?”

"La Femme Nikita" Ordered By The CW

The CW has picked up the pilot, an update of the 1990s action-thriller "La Femme Nikita."

The French film "Nikita," about a young criminal who's trained to be an assassin by a top-secret government organization, was originally made by Luc Besson in 1990, then was remade in 1993 as a U.S. film starring Bridget Fonda called "Point of No Return." The story was then launched as a TV series in 1997 on USA Network.

"Nikita" will give The CW its first non-supernatural action-drama. In this version, Nikita goes rogue and a new assassin is trained to replace her.

McG ("Terminator: Salvation," "Human Target") will executive produce the "Nikita" remake, along with Peter Johnson and Craig Silverstein (episodes of "Bones," "K-Ville"), who will write and exec produce. The show is from Warner Bros. and Wonderland Prods.

George Lucas Planning A CGI Film Starring "Fairies"

George Lucas Planning A CGI Film Starring "Fairies"

The untitled, top-secret CGI-animated film is in preproduction at Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in Marin County.

The project marks a rare foray outside the “Star Wars” universe for Lucas who, while not directing a movie since “Revenge of the Sith” in 2005, is putting the finishing touches on “Red Tails,” the adventure movie that tells the World War II story of the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first black pilots. Lucas wrote the screenplay for “Tails” and is exec producing. Read my
Exclusive interview with Lucas here.

Kevin Munroe is directing the CGI film, which is expected to feature music from a variety of sources. Munroe hails from the animated world and made his directorial debut in 2007 with the fourth Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, “TMNT.” He recently wrapped production on his live-action debut, the adaptation of the “Dead of Night” comic that stars Brandon Routh and Taye Diggs.

David Berenbaum, who wrote the Will Ferrell comedy “Elf” and children’s fantasy “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” penned the screenplay. Plot details are locked tighter than the plans for the Death Star, but one element known is that the script features fairies.

It is not known whether Berenbaum is working from a story by Lucas, who tends to originate much of Lucasfilm’s intellectual property.

Smallville: Absolute Justice Trailer

Smallville: Absolute Justice Trailer

The two-hour "Absolute Justice" arc seems like it might be the thing that brings me back to "Smallville."

This season Clark takes his superhero persona into obsessive territory when he leaves behind those he cares for so that he can focus solely on Jor-El's training. In order to accomplish this, Clark wears a new costume that sports his family crest on the chest. The theme of the season is about Clark finally embracing his alien heritage, while also being his darkest hour thus far. As a result, Clark's relationship with Chloe and Oliver will suffer this season. Season nine will also see the introduction of more DC Comics characters, including multiple episode appearances for the Justice Society of America, villain Metallo, and villainess Agent Amanda Waller.

Written by prolific comic creator Geoff Johns, "Absolute Justice" will feature the debut of one of my favorite superhero teams:
The Justice Society of America. I've been hooked on the team since picking up Johns' "Black Reign" arc in the JSA comics, and the latest trailer for "Absolute Justice" offers some new looks at two of my favorite JSA members, Dr. Fate and Hawkman.

The new trailer is being aired in Canada, and also includes some appearances by Star Girl, Green Arrow, Icicle (at least, I think that's Icicle) and J'onn J'onzz (The Martian Manhunter).

Kevin Feige Talks Upcoming Marvel Films

Kevin Feige Talks Upcoming Marvel Films

Kevin Feige went onto to talk about the upcoming Marvel films and how it will effect The upcoming Avengers movie which is slated for May 4, 2012.

Also read the fine detail some interesting news about possible movies that might get made.Or characters that could return.

"It's fun now, and we're introducing some new characters in ['Iron Man 2']," he told the magazine. "But it's not about just cramming in lots of new people; that's sort of the cardinal sin of the sequel - adding in too many characters. This is totally Tony Stark's story. And that's gonna weave into Thor's story, and Steve Rogers' story, and it's already ingrained with Nick Fury's story and an organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D."

He says that it is important to first focus on each character.
"My only concern is that when we launch a franchise--whichever character's franchise that may be--it should stand on its own two feet... So by the time 'The Avengers' comes in 2012, it's not just a team superhero movie with a bunch of characters with powers. It's three people - four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury - who you've seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time."

Catch that Hulk bit? Feige also said that he won't rule out the possibility of a second Incredible Hulk film with Edward Norton.
"That would be post-'Avengers,' if it happened... I think there's a chance. It's certainly our intention to use the same actors from film to film where we can."

Feige was asked it will be difficult to meld the fantasy of Thor with the high-tech science fiction in Iron Man and The Avengers. "No," he said,
"because we're doing the Jack Kirby/Stan Lee/Walt Simonson/J. Michael Straczynski 'Thor.' We're not doing the blow-the-dust-off-of-the-old-Norse-book-in-your-library 'Thor.' And in the 'Thor' of the Marvel Universe, there's a race called the Asgardians. And we're linked through this Tree of Life that we're unaware of. It's real science, but we don't know about it yet. The 'Thor' movie is about teaching people that."

The magazine asked Feige what other characters may come to the big screen after The Avengers.
"I love Doctor Strange. Ant-Man is like Whiplash - one of those characters where you're like, 'Really?' that we've got a fun story with. I've always wanted to do something with Black Panther. I think what Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction have done with Iron Fist lately is great, and the Iron Fist mythology opens up a whole other part to us. I'd love to break into the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe even more- it's kind of there in 'Thor.' J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' got me jonesing to do that. It's what I grew up on - 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars.' I want to do a big space epic. And we've got them in Marvel."

Iron Man 2 (May 7), Thor (May 6, 2011) and The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22, 2011) will lay the foundation for what should be the ultimate superhero epic - The Avengers (May 4, 2012).

Director Martin Campbell said this, "Well, Kilowog will be [in it]. Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it.

All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it's a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right."

Now, based on a script we found a couple years back at a comic book message board, Carol Ferris and Sinestro will not be the full fledged villains, but the characters will be set up as the villains for a second "Green Lantern" movie.

Steve Carell Next Project To Be Directed By Glenn Ficarra and John Requa

Steve Carell Next Project To Be Directed By Glenn Ficarra and John Requa

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are in negotiations to direct Warner Bros.' untitled Steve Carell/Dan Fogelman project.

Written as a spec by Fogelman, the comedy with dramatic elements follows a father deals with a marital crisis while managing a relationship with his children.

Carell is attached to star and is producing via his Warners-based Carousel Productions. Denise Di Novi is also producing.

The boarding of Ficarra and Requa now puts Carell on two tracks at Warners as to what movie he chooses to do during his hiatus this spring. The other project is "Mail-Order Groom," for which Carell may team-up with Tina Fey. Ficarra and Requa just finished a rewrite of the project, which has no director. Both seem to be neck and neck at this stage.

Ficarra and Requa, best known for penning "Bad Santa, wrote and directed "I Love You Phillip Morris," which stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor and opens March 26.

"Jersey Shore" Cast Getting Close To Signing

"Jersey Shore" Cast Getting Close To Signing

The cast of "Jersey Shore" is currently on track to keep fist-pumping into Season 2.

With MTV having stepped up its offer to $10,000 per episode, sources say negotiations have taken "a positive turn," though the deals are still not done. Agreements could be reached by the end of the week for a second round of MTV's breakout hit, whose cast collectively rebelled against the network's ridiculously low salaries for freshman performers (MTV's villainous-sounding "end of day" deadline that was widely reported Monday was supposedly hot air).

MTV is eager to get the cast shooting a new season to air in late summer -- July or August.

Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes Sequel In Lobo Out

Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes Sequel In Lobo Out

Director Guy Ritchie has set aside the planned "Lobo" film to clear his schedule for a fast-tracked "Holmes" sequel, according to producer Joel Silver.

"Holmes" has pulled in $389 million in worldwide box office since its Christmas Day release and looks to add to that with overseas releases still pending in Germany, Japan, France and several other markets. The role of the famed literary detective also just earned Robert Downey Jr. a surprise Golden Globe, suggesting that the actor might still be in play for an Oscar nomination next week.

Silver is a producer of "Holmes" as well as "Lobo," which would adapt the ultra-violent antihero from the pages of DC Comics. Ritchie, who burst on the scene with "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" in 1998, has his biggest commercial success with "Holmes," and Warner Bros. wants to parlay that into a franchise as quickly as possible, Silver told me this afternoon.

"I don't think he's going to do it now," Silver said of Ritchie directing "Lobo." "The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another 'Sherlock Holmes.' So I think we're going to be doing that. But we're seeing what happens with this. Everybody is analyzing everything. It's all kind of happening right now as we talk. 'Sherlock' is sitting at just about $400 million in worldwide gross and showing itself to be pretty effective and pretty strong. So we're trying to see if we can do something quickly with another 'Sherlock Holmes' movie. We have some ideas and some good story points."

Does that mean "Lobo" will be postponed until Ritchie is free, or is the plan to move on with a new director?

"I would guess a different director," said Silver, who is producing "Lobo" with Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona. "It's all happening at once now. Everybody is talking about everything .... It's an ongoing conversation. Downey loves the experience of playing Sherlock and would love to play him again, and I'd love to see him play it again. Jude and all of them will be back and it will be great."

Silver said "Lobo" remains a viable project. In the 1980s, the character was a wickedly funny parody of the antiheroes Wolverine and Punisher, characters that now have a combined seven film appearances to their credit.

"It was created as a rebuttal to the Marvel characters and his vest said 'Bite me fanboy,' " Silver pointed out. "It was very much a response to Wolverine and Punisher and the other characters and I think now that makes it fresh [for moviegoers]. We're working on it now and it will be nice to put it together and make it happen."

“The Electric Church” By Jeff Somers Headed To The Screen

“The Electric Church” By Jeff Somers Headed To The Screen

Sony Pictures has picked up movie rights to a series of sci-fi novels by Jeff Somers, tapping Trevor Sands to adapt the first book, titled “The Electric Church.”

Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller is producing the adaptation, which is working under the moniker the Avery Cates Project, named after the book’s main character.

Somers has written three books, all set in a near future where Earth is run by a federation of nations and governed by a council. Cates is a bodyguard-assassin who, in “Church,” is forced by the governing police force to kill the founder of a church that converts people by transplanting their brains into pliant robotic bodies.

Diana Williams will executive produce. David Householter and Gloria Fan will oversee on behalf of Mosaic.

The scribe recently adapted the science fiction book series “Hyperion” for Warner Bros. and GK Films, to which director Scott Derrickson is attached.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows To Be In 3D

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows To Be In 3D

Thanks Avatar, now every movie that comes out will be thinking about being in 3D.
Slowly evolving from fad to Standard Blockbuster Procedure (the jury's still out on whether it'll slip back into "just a phase territory, but post-Avatar, that won't be for a while), 3D is going to Hogwarts. Yes, both chunks of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows will be converted to the format.

Warners was apparently closed-mouthed when asked to confirm, so until the official announcement this is technically a rumour. But that shoe is expected to drop before the week - and knowing the speed at which these things move in the Internet age, the day - is over.

Each film will cost $5 million to convert and the process will also shove the release date of Titans back a week to 2nd April. The Potter pics are still on course for 19th November of this year and 15th July 2011 respectively.

Who wants to bet one of the 3D glasses companies will market Potter framed goggles for watching Hallows?

Mortal Kombat 3 In The Works

Mortal Kombat 3 In The Works

"Finish Him" They should finish the franchise by not making another Mortal Kombat film in my option.
The first movie directed by Paul WS Anderson's wasn't a bad film when it first came out. But the second film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, had to one of the worst films ever.

The nice guys over at Bloody Disgusting received word that Warner Bros. Pictures has been looking to redo Mortal Kombat with Oren Uziel in talks to write. Based on Midway's popular 1992 video game, the franchise follows the best fighters from around the globe who are summoned to an island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will determine the fate of the entire planet. Uziel's Shimmer Lake made the 2009 black list, which features the best unproduced screenplays around Hollywood. Johnny Cage was modeled after Jean-Claude Van Damme. No word on the progress of the remake, but we'd like to see a hard "R" version with some actual f*cking fatalities.

MAG Playstations Answer To Modern Warfare 2

MAG Playstations Answer To Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 you better watch your 6 someone is right behind you.

Console action game fans are used to shooting it out with 16 or 18 other players, but upcoming Sony release MAG is about to kick it up a notch.

And by "a notch" we mean "about 240 notches." Set in the year 2025, where private military forces are warring over lucrative contracts, MAG's online matches will support up to 256 individual players -- a first for console shooters.
MAG

A truly Massive Action Game.

A recipe for chaos? Maybe, but at least MAG has a chain of command. Players are organized into eight-man squads, each with its own commanding officer. Four squads make a platoon, four platoons forms a company, and players head up each level of organization.

If you've ever played an online game, you may be wondering exactly how that's going to reduce confusion. So you'll be relieved to hear the developers don't just let any random fool take the reins of an entire faction. Instead, players with ambitions to command will have to prove themselves as a grunt, while those in higher levels of command will already have succeeded at squad-leader levels. More experience also grants access to higher levels of gear, much like in last year's hit Modern Warfare 2 -- and good leaders gain perks that give bonuses to all the soldiers under their command.

Sounds good, but will players actually be prepared to follow orders? Smartly, MAG builds in a reward system that doles out incentives for fulfilling objectives that your commander considers important. That extends way beyond just shooting opposing players: for example, destroying obstacles or taking out anti-aircraft guns. We're betting there will still be headstrong types who prefer to go it alone -- or those who don't take direction well -- but they're not going to advance at the same rate as team players.

MAG's scale plays into its map design, too. Expect to find MAG games playing out over landscapes more akin to Grand Theft Auto IV than what you'd expect from the smaller, more compact maps from the Halo or Call of Duty games. Fortunately, the game also packs drivable vehicles like APCs and tanks to help players navigate the terrain, and despite the mammoth scale, the visuals are every bit as good as any other top-tier shooter you care to name.

MAG comes to us from the team behind Sony's long-running military action series SOCOM, so they're no stranger to gunplay, and reports from the game's just-concluded beta test are encouraging. During the test, over a million players downloaded the game, and an impressive number played the game enough to max out their characters.

You'll get your chance to enlist on Jan 26.

3D Glass What Really Happens To Them When The Curtains Fall?

3D Glass What Really Happens To Them When The Curtains Fall?

Do you ever wonder what happens to the 3D glass that you get at the theater? And wonder what really happens to them after the movie.

James Cameron's Avatar continues its march toward box-office domination: As of this weekend, its sixth since being released, it's become the second-highest grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation).

They usually get washed or recycled. There are a number of manufacturers battling for control of the 3-D market. Most of these companies make reusable glasses, though the market leader, RealD, primarily makes single-use spectacles. (RealD has also launched a line of reusable designer glasses.)

Reusable glasses are generally collected in trays and then cleaned in a dishwasherlike machine (or, in some cases, in an actual dishwasher). IMAX Corporation has its own, proprietary washers that exhibitors are required to use on-site. Dolby Laboratories demands that theaters use a commercial-grade dishwasher. XpanD Cinema says that most of their exhibitors use commercial dishwashers, too, but that any kind of dishwasher and detergent is fine as long as temperature is kept below 140 degrees and you use a nonammonia cleanser. (Otherwise, you could damage the lenses' liquid-crystal display or discolor the plastic.) XpanD also says that some of its exhibitors, like the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, have a staff member hand-clean each pair with a cloth and some light soap, whereas others choose not to clean the glasses at all—instead, they hand out individual disinfecting wipes to each customer.

RealD established a recycling program for its disposable glasses in November 2008 and has collection containers in each theater with a RealD screen. When containers are full, they're sent to a recycling center, where the glasses are cleaned using heat and other cleaning agents, checked manually and by machine for quality assurance, and then individually repackaged. In an April 2009 presentation (PPT) at the ShoWest exposition, the company noted that approximately 70 percent of theaters "actively participate" in the recycling program.

Priest Is A Vampire Story Set In The Old West

Priest Is A Vampire Story Set In The Old West

Director Scott Stewart and actor Paul Bettany had so much fun working together on Legion that they teamed up again for Priest, an upcoming futuristic vampire story based on a Korean comic book. In the movie, Jedi-like warrior priests battle vampires in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that's like the Old West.

Thing is, the comic book wasn't a future story and didn't deal with vampires; rather, it was set in the actual Old West, and its main character, the immortal priest Ivan Isaacs, instead battles fallen angels.

That might seem like a big change, but Priest creator Hyung Min-woo doesn't mind.

"Min-woo came out and visited us over the summer," Stewart said in a group interview last week in Los Angeles. "He'd read a translation of the script and came out and was really, really pleased with what he saw. We talk about the graphic novels as being the past, and [the film version of] Priest is kind of the future."

In the movie, the fallen angels are now vampires, but otherwise the graphic novel is the film's history. If that doesn't make sense, the graphic novels are even making adjustments to bridge the gap between literature and film.

"You'll see: Tokyopop, with Min-woo, created a continuation" comic series, Stewart said. "He had 16 books, but it was kind of a soap opera with no ending. It never continued, so you don't know where the story goes. And now there are new stories that will be coming. You'll see how that story dovetails with ours. The Ivan Isaacs character in the Priest comic book is the first prototype Priest. The characters in our movie are what came much later, when the Priests were trained by the church to be like Ivan Isaacs."

In the movie, Bettany stars as a character simply named Priest. "It's a very different story for me [from Legion]," Bettany said. "It's a hugely different character in that Michael is all about forgiveness and faith, and Priest is about revenge. He just wants blood. We went into it with the same spirit, but with three times the budget, which changes everything."

With more money to work with, the future setting of Priest allowed Stewart to play with the visuals. "It's got lots of action and stuff, but it is literally a science fiction western," Stewart said. "It takes place in an alternate universe. There's retro-futuristic things, motorcycles instead of horses, and big industrial cities. The whole mythology is entirely the history of the vampire/human wars and all this other kind of stuff. The Priest characters are like these Jedi Knights."

Priest will have something to say, too. Even though the Priests are fighting vampires, they deal with the same problems that face human soldiers returning from human wars. "It's kind of an 'after the war' movie," Stewart said. "What happens when, as a soldier, you make a sacrifice, you go off, you fight the war, you win the war, you think you're going to get the ticker-tape parade down Broadway? Instead they decommission you, and you work in a factory, and no one sits next to you on the bus because people are afraid of you. What happens a generation after that, when now you have to go and do something for yourself and the people who sent you out there say no? You have to defy them."

Priest is due out Aug. 20.

Sam Worthington To Sink His Teeth In As Dracula

Sam Worthington To Sink His Teeth In As Dracula

Mr. Worthington his on fire right now with the success of Avatar and his upcoming film Clash of The Titans. Strike it when it hot.

The good folks over at Latino Review have some breaking news.

This is the day that Universal decides what it is going to make for summer 2011. You see, Universal has been stagnant since they got sold to that Cable company Comcast. They haven't been allowed to go to the toilet without a permission slip. And now they realize they need to make 8 big films for 2011. You see it takes at least a year to make a moving picture- and they don't have enough for next year.

So there are 14 possible films with 8 needed. And they need to figure out what the freak they are doing quickly.

Each of the possible 14 are ready to go with scripts and directors. Some of them you know and some of them you don't.

But the craziest one is called DRACULA: YEAR ZERO. Yes I know, un titulo de mierda. This is a period retelling of Dracula. Like back in Transylvania and sh*t. Vampires and Vlad the impaler. You know, Van Helsing without that dial a hack Sommers. Because Dracula worked out so well in Blade: Trinity. And I think there was a Dracula 2000... but I don't know who saw it.

Check it though, you know who is supposed to play Dracula? Sam Worthington! That's right, the newly minted "movie star" who everybody paid to see in Avatar. Except they didn't pay to see him now did they?

The movie is budgeted at over $100m. That seems like a lot of cashola for Dracula. But then they spent $165m on the new WOLFMAN wherein fellow Latino Benicio is looking pretty miserable. They are obsessed with the old Universal monsters, even though they are in the public domain. Oh, and nobody cares.

Film is being produced by the guy who gave us the less than brilliant Ghost Rider and directed by the guy who made Will Smith suck in I ,Robot. Don't worry, he blames the head of the studio, for everything, just like Harry Knowles.

Saw 3D Vs Paranormal Activity 2 Going To Get Nasty

Saw 3D Vs Paranormal Activity 2 Going To Get Nasty

In a cheap shot move Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures threw a curve ball at Paramount.

Saw franchise partners Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate have just exercised an option and installed Saw VI director Kevin Greutert as director of Saw 3D, the seventh volume of the fright series. That blocks Paramount, which had hired Greutert to direct Paranormal Activity 2. Both films are set for release on October 22nd, and the move came after Paramount set that date. Meanwhile Twisted Pictures, which held an option on the director from back when he helmed Saw VI, bumped previously announced Saw 3D director David Hackl, who directed Saw V and who will be assigned another film quickly, sources tell me. Both directors have been involved in the Saw films from the beginning. The rivalry between the films began last fall, when Paramount's sleeper hit Paranormal Activity bloodied Twisted/Lionsgate's Saw VI at the box office en route to a $150 million worldwide gross on a $15,000 budget. It will be interesting to see how Paramount responds.
