Jeremy Renner to Appear in 'Captain America: Civil War'

Clint Barton will in fact appear in Marvel's Phase 3 Opener.

Story by Matt Cummings

With 2015 about to get ramped up with some serious blockbusters like Avengers: Age of Ultron, rumor has been raging for awhile about which hero(es) would survive or even return for Phase 3. Among those at the top of the "Soon to Be Unemployed List" was Clint Barton aka Hawkeye. Maligned through Phase 1's The Avengers, fans complained that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) was underutilized, relegated to Loki's slave for the first 2/3 of the film. In fact, his role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was gutted in favor of a tighter film, which ultimately needed him in the very last scene.

But yesterday, THR released a story that clearly shows Hawkeye will not only survive Age of Ultron but will appear in at least one more film. According to the website, Renner will join Robert Downey, Jr and Chris Evans in Captain America: Civil War when it shoots this spring. We don't know how he will fit into the story to be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, but to see Hawkeye and Renner return - for at least one more shot - gives us hope that the Hawkeye will have a more substantial role.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6, 2016 and Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives on May 1, 2015. Source: THR

Toy Story 4 To Follow A New Storyline

Fans who wanted Toy Story 4 to be a return trip with Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the gang was dealt a blow on Friday, as Pixar president Jim Morris told Disney Latino (via The Daily Telegraph) that the new film in the franchise will veer from the relationship between the now-college-aged Andy and his beloved toys that drove the first three movies.

“In temperament it is, but it will be a love story,” said Morris. “It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children.”

Morris also dispelled the idea the new film, coming after what with many thought was a logical, perfect end to the series, was a money grab: “That’s not what it’s about. It’s about an idea that is met with enthusiasm.”

On board for the new project is John Lasseter, director of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, along with Rashida Jones and Will McCormack to pen the script.

The movie is slated for a June 16, 2017 release in the U.S

CARMIKE, CINEMARK AND REGAL JOIN AMC THEATRES IN OFFERING COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS TO STUDENTS.

The Imitation Game Review: Cumberbatch Shines in Turing Biopic-

The Weinstein Company (TWC) is excited to announce that major exhibitors Carmike Cinemas, Cinemark and Regal Entertainment Group are joining AMC Theatres in giving their support to a free high school screening program for Academy Award® winning film THE IMITATION GAME. Students all over the U.S. are being offered free tickets to the movie on Friday, March 6th at 446 locations, with a special focus on schools and community groups, including high school computer classes, math and science teams and LGBT clubs.

Commented TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein: "It's amazing to see the movement that's being created in bringing students to theaters and giving them an opportunity to experience this film. We are blown away by the prospect of having young people come to screenings and be inspired, and are tremendously grateful that Carmike, Cinemark, Regal and AMC are helping in continuing to share Alan Turing's story."

TWC released THE IMITATION GAME in select theaters on November 28th and nationwide on December 25th. It has since become the year's top grossing independent film at the domestic box office, with $87M in ticket sales to date. Produced by Black Bear Pictures and Bristol Automotive, the film won the Academy Award® for Best Adapted Screenplay (Graham Moore) and was nominated for seven others, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), Best Supporting Actress (Keira Knightley) and Best Director (Morten Tyldum.) It was also nominated for five Golden Globe® Awards, included in the American Film Institute's top 11 films of the year and nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Directed by Tyldum, produced by Nora Grossman, Ido Ostrowsky and Teddy Schwarzman, with a screenplay by Moore, the film stars Cumberbatch, Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard, Charles Dance and Mark Strong.

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of 'gross indecency', an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality - little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save millions of lives.

The Android and IOS application, designed by award-winning animation studio Reel FX, features the groundbreaking SHATTER REALITY VR experience currently on tour presented by Samsung and a one-of-a-kind “virtual theater,” inspired by the film’s "Erudite Lab" as a way for viewers to experience a special, stereoscopic 3D scene from the movie. The launch comes as a culmination to the 'Erudite Mainframe' website experience; an interactive online feature that allows users to explore the Faction society structure that is the foundation for the film's world, and enter the tyrannical Jeanine Matthews' secretive 'simulation lab' in the Erudite HQ building.

Insurgent is the first major motion picture to use Google Cardboard and let fans enjoy virtual reality experiences on their smartphones. Today only, audiences that purchase tickets to Insurgent on Fandango are guaranteed an INSURGENT branded Cardboard as a gift with purchase.

Lionsgate has also partnered with IMAX and REGAL Cinemas exclusively to distribute INSURGENT Google cardboards in all Regal IMAX Theatres starting Thursday, March 19 while supplies last.

Fans will also be able to view the experience on Samsung Gear VR during the March 7-8 weekend at select Best Buy stores across the U.S. In the experience, users take the role of “Divergent” members of society in the film, who are captured by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and are subjected to a series of mental “simulations” to determine the full extent of their divergence -- transporting them to fearscapes from a crumbling Chicago skyscraper to a fast-approaching locomotive.

#SUPERGIRL First Look

The new Supergirl costume feels very different—and in this case, that’s a good thing.

See the entire suit after the Jump...

Warner Bros. released the first shot of Melissa Benoist in costume for the new CBS series from Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg. Gone are the days of the bright blue and red color scheme, as this Kara Zor-El appears to be taking a walk on the dark side—figuratively, of course.

Also different from the costume Helen Slater donned in the ’80s is that Kara is showing off less skin now that her boots go above her knees and she appears to be wearing stockings underneath. And she certainly isn’t sporting the bare midriff Kara has often appeared with in the comics.

The costume, designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, also feels very reminiscent of the texturized one Henry Cavill dons in Man of Steel, even down to the positioning of the cape. “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” says Atwood, who also designed the costumes for The Flash and Arrow.

Movie Review: THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

Another round of old Brits in India. Plus an American this time

I guess I just have a soft spot for cliched, generic charming movies like this sequel, I tend to overlook its flaws when it’s outweighed by the film’s stellar performances and wonderful themes, but this doesn’t happen all the time, THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL does feel like second rate in almost all of its aspects, but whenever the great Judi Dench and the great Maggie Smith take the screen and do their thing, all those other weak links seem to fade away.

If you were a fan of the first film, you might want to take your expectation down a notch just a tiny bit just so you don’t yourself up for disappointment, only because screenwriter Ol Parker basically imagined what the next chapter would be like and he focused it on Sonny’s (Dev Patel) engagement and upcoming wedding with the beautiful Sunaina (Tina Desai) The Marigold hotel is doing well, the elderly residents seem content and happy but they all have their own separate romantic dilemmas, meanwhile, Sonny has a vision of expanding the hotel by acquiring another building, but when a certain competitor comes to town and even gets in the middle of his and Sunaina’s dancing arrangement, Sonny starts losing sight on what’s really importance, he’s losing sight on his priorities.

It’s always pleasant to see the hard-to-please but irresistible Muriel (Maggie Smith) once again, she’s one of those who you think couldn’t care less but they actually do and dame Maggie just plays it effortlessly. And at the same time you get to see some kind of puppy crush between Judi Dench’s Evelyn and Bill Nighy’s Douglas, the kind that you’d expect high schoolers would express, but apparently love knows no old age. A certain stranger enters the picture, Richard Gere’s character, conveniently named Guy, who claims to be an aspiring author, but superstitious Sonny thinks Guy is secretly the person that one of his potential investors sent over to see about the place For the most part, as a romantic comedy, I think THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL suffers from all these insignificant subplots that are just all over the place, you badly want to gather them all together but they just don’t want to. This is a movie that would’ve worked much better as episodic series instead. There’s hardly anything cinematic about it, and the conclusion is Sonny’s entrepreneurial venture is abrupt and hardly inspiring. But as I said earlier, the priorities about putting the one you love first and foremost can make you not want to completely trash this film, you’d file it under adorable. Plus I enjoy how this franchise makes death as something we shouldn't necessarily fear, we can even laugh about it.

Can #Therock Save #DREDD? Adi Shankar Breaks Down How A Movie Is Made.

Trying to figure out how to get your movie made? Well, just pull up a chair and watch the above video, in which Adi Shankar — the wunderkind producer behind that recent (and very controversial) Power/Rangers video — provides a gritty explanation of the world of independent film financing.

Shankar was just 26 when he had his first breakthrough hit with 2011’s Liam Neeson-versus-wolves movie The Grey. But what gives him even more nerd street-cred is his role as the executive producer of 2012’s Dredd, the big screen reboot of Judge Dredd, the Sylvester Stallone-as-futuristic-cop flick from 1995.

Dredd was a major bomb at the box office, making only $35 million worldwide. But it has since become a cult hit amongst the Reddit crowd, who are clamoring for a sequel. Taking advantage of his recent spate of press attention, Shankar — who dresses like he lives inside his own The Crow fan film — recorded a video inside his poorly lit office to explain why a follow-up to the Karl Urban-starring flick will be so hard to achieve.

Basically, as with everything else in Hollywood and life in general, it comes down to money.

Shankar — despite his somewhat comedic goth appearance and prominently placed Machine Gun Preacher poster — offers up a solid, easy-to-digest lesson about the difficulty of putting together the budget for independent films. As he explains, producers without the benefit of rich benefactors have to stitch together money from selling the distribution rights to the film in various territories. Distributors make their best estimate of what the movie would be worth in their market, based on the actors, director, and intellectual property involved.

He uses some big stars to make his point, explaining that an independent movie directed by David Fincher and starring Leonardo DiCaprio would be way more valuable than a movie starring Karl Urban and directed by a lesser-known director — especially since the Dredd brand isn’t particularly strong with the non-Reddit crowd.

"At its previous budget level, Dredd lost almost every distributor money,” he explains. “So there are really three options here: One, lower the budget… Two, bring on a filmmaker who would really move the needle, like a David Fincher, and that’s not realistic, it’s not going to happen. Major filmmakers really aren’t in the business of directing sequels to somebody else’s franchise. And three, a movie star.”

If he was to somehow get The Rock to join the franchise, Shankar suggests, that could change everything, since The Rock is beloved around the world, and the international distribution pre-sale generally accounts for 60-to-70 percent of a film’s budget. It’s not a perfect system, since international distributors (much like Hollywood studios) try to dictate the script of a movie, but it’s the only way that most indie films get made nowadays. Unless you have an Ellison as a producer, that is.

Movie Review: Chappie

Chappie is crappy.

Review by Matt Cummings

Director Neill Blomkamp has been charged with returning the Alien franchise back to James Cameron glory, but until then he's got another futuristic story to tell on Earth. Unfortunately saddled with an over-sexualized oddity that gets in the way of a potentially interesting story, Chappie is crushed under its own weight of random comedy, poor character development, and extremely bad haircuts.

The ultra-violent world of Johannesburg, South Africa is the stage for Blomkamp's latest, as robot police officers have taken over, leaving the city nearly crime free. But one robot - the oft-repaired Scout 22 - returns to the facility shot and dead to rights. When it's determined that its battery has been fused and can't be repaired, it's sent to the scrap, until its designer Deon (Dev Patel) rescues it. Already a success in developing the Scouts, he's working on an AI program hat would allow them to experience emotions, encouraging a 'No' from his boss Bradley (Sigourney Weaver) and the ire of a rival designer (Hugh Jackman). But a twist is thrown into Deon's plan, as a gang of thugs lead by Ninja and Yolandi (playing themselves) overpower Deon and learn of his plan. With the child-like Chappie learning from questionable 'parents,' it's up to Deon to balance the robot's sense of right and wrong before his battery dies altogether.

Blomkamp is amazingly talented for creating the oddly-natured world of District 9; but he's lived off that success for too long, struggling in 2013's Elysium. No doubt, audiences will look at Chappie and wonder if his success was one-hit, and they could be right. Beyond the incessant oddity of it all (with full-tilt sexuality on display), the script by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell fails to use its gifts to tell a powerful story of humanity, instead settling on a silly tale of thugs using a robot to steal. Moreover, we never learn why Scout 22 is so prone to getting shot, none of which seems to impact the way Chappie performs. I kept thinking there was a missed opportunity to see those two AI's mix, something that was lost in the final cut.

The bad guys seem to have no backstory, often behaving like one-note thugs whose attachment to Chappie feel too self-serving . Rather than growing with the robot, they remain unchanged by Chappie. Why send him out to be pummeled by gangs and life in general, when he's more valuable as something you can control? Where is the nurturing Deon throughout entire sections of the second act? It's questions like these I found myself asking way too much throughout instead of enjoying the growth of the character and the bigger questions about what it means to be human. By the time we get to the end, it's like we've seen a weird conglomeration of Dredd, Robocop, Mad Max, and I Robot with weird costumes and haircuts that look like a cheaper version of The Fifth Element...and that's being nice.

Performances aren't awful, but no one here is particular interesting, as their backstories never come into play; Jackman comes off as a one-note bully whose jealously of Deon drives him to do something that mirrors the ED-209/Murphy battle from the original. How much more powerful would things have been if Chappie's growth and eventual moral conflict had taken center stage instead of the pastels and utter weirdness? Weaver shouldn't even be here, as her role is to simply chew up a couple of scenes without ever really exploring her ulterior motives. There's so many lost opportunities here, from our police chief never pondering if human cops are doomed to be replaced, to Chappie himself growing into sentience just as the battery fades. Sure, that screams Blade Runner, but imagine the consequences. It even approaches self-reverential without meaning to do so, featuring a scene straight out of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Meant to open a discussion about humanity, Chappie struggles with an inherent weirdness that will put off most potential moviegoers. And while the ending is unconventional, it's certainly not the best available. This is not a show for kids, with lots of phallic symbols everywhere, as well as a bizarre sexual challenge on Yolandi's shirt. Such style over substance isn't healthy for a film, making Blomkamp look more like an anti-human than a person wanting to press the boundaries of Science Fiction. This is the conflict behind Chappie, a potentially good video find that could have been so much more.

Chappie is Rated R for violence, language and brief nudity and has a runtime of 120 minutes.

Brooklyn mobster and prolific hit man Jimmy Conlon (Neeson), once known as The Gravedigger, has seen better days. Longtime best friend of mob boss Shawn Maguire (Harris), Jimmy, now 55, is haunted by the sins of his past—as well as a dogged police detective (D’Onofrio) who’s been one step behind Jimmy for 30 years. But when Jimmy’s estranged son, Mike (Kinnaman), becomes a target, Jimmy must make a choice between the crime family he chose and the real family he abandoned long ago. With Mike on the run, Jimmy’s only penance for his past mistakes may be to keep his son from the same fate Jimmy is certain he’ll face himself…at the wrong end of a gun. Now, with nowhere safe to turn, Jimmy just has one night to figure out exactly where his loyalties lie and to see if he can finally make things right.

Collet-Serra directs from a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby (“Out of the Furnace”). Diablo Cody To Write The Barbie Movie

Sony Pictures has set Diablo Cody to write the next draft of Barbie, the live-action film based on Mattel’s top-selling fashion doll that the studio believes will anchor a global film franchise.

The studio made a deal awhile back with Mattel and Parkes+MacDonald/Image Nation for the comedy, and had Jenny Bicks write the first draft. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing, and they recently invited Amy Pascal to join them.

The spirit of the doll is all about female empowerment, and Cody is a famous example of someone who pulled herself up to become the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Juno. But Barbie is also somewhat squeaky clean in her image, and Cody’s rags-to-riches story famously starts with her working as a stripper, and then writing a blog about her life which led to her breaking into the ranks of A-list screenwriters. Her work from Jennifer’s Body to the Jason Reitman-directed Young Adult to her directing debut Paradise were all edgy efforts.

The producers and studio are determined to get the tone right, much the way that Warner Bros did with The LEGO Movie, which had a cool factor and sense of fun. The theme of empowerment overrides the fashion accessories that have been a staple of a $3 billion-a-year toy brand. Barbie uses her personal and professional skills to step into the lives of others and improve them, almost like a modern-day Mary Poppins. That storyline allows for the discovery of a young actress to play the title character, and young cast to play Ken and Barbie’s best friend, putting stars around them that can change in subsequent movies, a formula that allows for affordable sequels. This is one of two Sony projects with Mattel, the other being Masters Of The Universe.

Dan Stevens Joins Luke Evans & Emma Watson In "Beauty"

Dan Stevens, the breakout actor of Downton Abbey and last year's cult action movie The Guest, is in negotiations to play the Beast/Prince in Disney's live-action retelling of Beauty and the Beast, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting.

Stevens will join Emma Watson, who is playing Belle, the "Beauty" in the title, while Luke Evans is in talks to play the vain villain Gaston.

Bill Condon is directing what is turning out so far to be an all-British cast production while David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing.

Beauty continues Disney's plan of taking some of its animated classics and brushing them up for a 21st century live-action makeover. Cinderella, which also features mostly British leads, is the latest — it opens March 13 — and it's generating great reviews.

Last year's Maleficent was a live-action take on Sleeping Beauty and made $758.4 million worldwide.

Beauty, a French fairy tale, tells of a young woman who takes her father's place as a prisoner in a monstrous being's castle, only to fall in love with the creature, who turns out to be a prince.
While the studio has not confirmed if the retelling is a musical, when Watson was cast in January, she implied it was in a Facebook post: "It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I'll get to dance to 'Be Our Guest' and sing 'Something There.' ... Time to start some singing lessons."

The highly sought-after role will be a big get for Stevens, who last starred in The Guest, Adam Wingard's action thriller, and has been working in supporting roles in such movies as Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and A Walk Among the Tombstones.

Expendables TV Series On It's Way

With three movies of varying quality and box office success out there (and more in development), you would think Sylvester Stallone would be quite happy with the amount of Expendables in the world. Yet he, along with producer Avi Lerner and Lionsgate have made a deal with the US Fox network to craft an “event” series (read: along the lines of 24: Live Another Day) based on the gun-toting franchise to hit small screens.

But with the change in venue comes a scaled-down line-up: gone are the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews and Dolph Lundgren and here come…

Well, we don’t exactly know, as no actors have been so much as wish listed yet, but Deadline reports that the project will likely be stocked with a Who’s Who of older, iconic telly action types and possibly some of the current crop (the Strike Back team, for example). The plot, in case you were wondering, finds this fresh assemblage heading out on a mission to stop a terrorist. Which totally ruins our idea of them forming a military flower delivery unit, codenamed PETAL (Prepared Extreme Tactical Armoured Lilies).

Stallone and Lerner are on as executive producers, while NCIS veteran writer/producer Shane Brennan will carry out the heavy lifting alongside screenwriter Greg Coolidge (Ride Along) and actor/writer Kirk Ward.
