BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Diablo Cody To Write The Barbie Movie

Sony Pictures has set Diablo Cody to write the next draft of Barbie, the live-action film based on Mattel’s top-selling fashion doll that the studio believes will anchor a global film franchise.

The studio made a deal awhile back with Mattel and Parkes+MacDonald/Image Nation for the comedy, and had Jenny Bicks write the first draft. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing, and they recently invited Amy Pascal to join them.

The spirit of the doll is all about female empowerment, and Cody is a famous example of someone who pulled herself up to become the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Juno. But Barbie is also somewhat squeaky clean in her image, and Cody’s rags-to-riches story famously starts with her working as a stripper, and then writing a blog about her life which led to her breaking into the ranks of A-list screenwriters. Her work from Jennifer’s Body to the Jason Reitman-directed Young Adult to her directing debut Paradise were all edgy efforts.

The producers and studio are determined to get the tone right, much the way that Warner Bros did with The LEGO Movie, which had a cool factor and sense of fun. The theme of empowerment overrides the fashion accessories that have been a staple of a $3 billion-a-year toy brand. Barbie uses her personal and professional skills to step into the lives of others and improve them, almost like a modern-day Mary Poppins. That storyline allows for the discovery of a young actress to play the title character, and young cast to play Ken and Barbie’s best friend, putting stars around them that can change in subsequent movies, a formula that allows for affordable sequels. This is one of two Sony projects with Mattel, the other being Masters Of The Universe.

Winona Ryder- An "Alienation" Expert?

Winona Ryder- An "Alienation" Expert? We're halfway checked out for the holiday weekend, so let's end with bit of comedy. A litigious videogame player is calling Winona Ryder to testify as an expert in "alienation." Erik Estavillo has filed a $1 million lawsuit in California Superior Court against Activision Blizzard, publisher of "World of Warcraft," saying it "maintain(s) a harmful virtual environment to many of its customers by forcing them to follow the game's sneaky and deceitful practices." The plaintiff says he suffers from several mental health problems brought on by WoW's "alienating" features, such as forcing beginners to walk or run to get from one point to another instead of speedier options available to those who master the game or buy an expansion pack. Estavillo says that the slow pace is "deceitful" because more time = more subscription revenue for Activision. Here's where Winona Ryder comes...

Sex Tape Review: Overly Sexual, Rude, Vulgar, and Absolutely Hilarious

The raunchy Sex Tape will divide audiences and critics, but who cares? Sex Tape suggests a growing practice among loving partners: that of making a raunchy testament of their escapades for posterity. But what happens when that evidence gets seen by friends, neighbors, and even the mailman? This is the plot that pits Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) in an effort to secure every iPad gift Jay has given, his record company playlists being the envy of the recipients, but which has also inadvertently spread the video to every device. The reason for the act - termed in the movie as pulling "the full Lincoln " for its three-hour length - stems from the couple's non-existent social life, brought on by the constant demands of their children. The couple has a lot to lose: a burgeoning business relationship between Annie and Hank (Rob Lowe) could end if the iPad she's given to Hank exposes the video, and so the couple sets out to reclaim and wipe the incrim...
