Pretty Boy Floyd Film Has Robbed A Director

Pretty Boy Floyd Film Has Robbed A Director

Writer-director Wayne Kramer has signed on to helm the crime thriller “Pretty Boy Floyd" for Myriad Pictures.

Kevin Bernhardt wrote the screenplay based on the notorious gangster and bank robber, whose full name was Charles Arthur Floyd. “Pretty Boy” committed numerous robberies and other crimes around Kansas City and the Midwest in the late ’20s and ’30s -- obtaining the populist nickname “The Robin Hood of the Cookson Hills” along the way -- before his death in 1934 at age 30.

“My approach is to bring 21st century style and energy to Kevin Bernhardt’s meticulously researched screenplay without sacrificing the verisimilitude of the period or over-sensationalizing the characters themselves,” says Kramer. “At the heart of ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ is a great love story about an outlaw on the run who can’t stay away from the woman he loves, no matter how destructive the relationship is for both of them -- which ultimately leads to his demise.”

That would be Ruby Hardgrave, whom he married in 1924 before turning to crime in the grit of the Depression.

Floyd posthumously went on to become something of a folk legend, especially after Woody Guthrie lionized him in “The Ballad of Pretty Boy Floyd” in 1939. The song was covered often in the folk music world, and the Flattop villain in the Dick Tracy comics was based on Floyd.

On film, the outlaw was portrayed in the 1960 film “Pretty Boy Floyd” and 10 years later in “A Bullet for Pretty Boy.” Martin Sheen played him in a 1974 TV movie, and Channing Tatum portrayed Floyd in Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” last year opposite Johnny Depp as John Dillinger.

The Social Network Teaser Trailer

The Social Network Teaser Trailer

Columbia Pictures has just released the very first teaser trailer for its upcoming film, The Social Network. Like the poster that debuted last week, the teaser is sparse in its detail, but intriguing and provocative at the same time.

The Social Network, otherwise known as “the Facebook (Facebook) movie,” is based in part on the book The Accidental Billionaires. It chronicles the formative days of Facebook, from its founding in Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard dorm room through its early rise to success. Written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher, the film stars Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg. It hits theaters this October.

Watch the trailer after the jump..

The tag line for the film, “You can’t make 500 million friends without making a few enemies” seems to sum up some of those early days, and the film is as much an exploration of young people coming to terms with creating something bigger than themselves as much as it is about loyalty, jealousy and money.

Some have questioned why Facebook and its story was worthy of a film, let alone a film from A-level writers and directors. Well, think about just how much Facebook dominates the online communication space today. Think about how much bigger it is than it was even a year ago. Now consider that it was started only six years ago. Its overwhelming success and the fact that it has become important enough to drive ongoing discussions regarding privacy and data ownership is indicative that it is a force.

The Martian Chronicles Ready To Become A Film

The Martian Chronicles Ready To Become A Film

Fox-based producer Jon Davis, who helped bring the world Alien Vs Predator and I Robot, has grabbed up the rights to Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles has apparently been optioned and  plans to turn it into a movie.

The book, published in 1950, has been adapted for the screen before, albeit the smaller one: it was the source material for a miniseries that featured Rock Hudson and Bernadette Peters. Now, though, with Avatar’s after effects (not to mention profits) pulsing through executives’ veins and budgets, you’ve got to figure Fox might just leap at the idea of bringing Bradbury’s effective prose to cinemas.

Chronicles charts various human journeys to Mars and the interactions they end up having with the natives, not all of them friendly. But while the writer layered in a healthy subtext of philosophical curiosity, we’re not sure that would survive the translation into a movie.

Matt Damon To Join "Ben's Zoo?"

Matt Damon To Join "Ben's Zoo?"

Matt Damon is in preliminary talks to star in 20th Century Fox's "We Bought a Zoo," Cameron Crowe's next directing project.

In 2007, it was the subject of a four part television documentary, entitled Ben's Zoo, which followed owner Ben Mee and other staff as they revamped the park for the 21st century. It was shown on BBC Two in November and December of that year. Benjamin Mee, a former DIY columnist for The Guardian, also wrote a book about his experience refurbishing and living at the zoo, We Bought a Zoo: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Changed Their Lives Forever.

Although "Ben's Zoo" was not followed by a second series, it was aired in several overseas locations and on Nat Geo Wild throughout May 2010. In 2009, 20th Century Fox purchased the film rights to Mee's book. The project is currently (April 2010) in development with director Cameron Crowe said to be working on a rewrite of the original adaptation written by Aline Brosh McKenna, well known for her adaptation of "The Devil Wears Prada."

Studio finalized Crowe's deal in May, dating the pic for Dec. 23, 2011.

Based on Benjamin Mee's memoir, "Zoo" revolves around a widowed father who buys a dilapidated zoo in hopes of making a fresh start. He and his children, along with a small but loyal staff, work to get the zoo reopened. Julie Yorn is producing.

Nathan Fillion & Eva Longoria To Join Cast Of The Avengers?

The rumor that Nathan Fillion and Eva Longoria have joined the cast of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers continues to pick up steam. Should the rumors be true, Fillion, a long time Whedon collaborator, would portray Dr. Henry Pym, aka Ant Man, and Longoria would play his wife, Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp. Supposedly the two of them would show up as S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists before revealing their true, super powered nature.

Akira Movie To Be PG-13

Akira Movie To Be PG-13

We brought you the news back in February that The Hughes Bros. who brought us Menace II Society and Book Of Eli, were attached to direct WB’s live action Akira movie. The project is still produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s company, Appian Way, along with Andrew Lazar but it doesn’t say if Leo will play the character Kaneda.

First off, as far as who among the brothers will get to direct the project, Collider chatted with producer Andrew Lazar who revealed that only Albert will be tackling the job. He’s currently conceptualizing the movie with a group of visual artists and they’ve also hired a screenwriter, Albert Torres (Henry Poole Is Here)

Via Filmschoolrejects, Next stop, those of you who may be fans of AKIRA might think it deserves an R-rated treatment but WB, the studio behind The Dark Knight, thinks PG-13 would suffice.
Albert recently talked on The Kevin and Josh Movie Show on 106.7 HD2 (CBS RADIO – Washington D.C.) and confirmed studio’s intention..

“The first thing they said to me was it had to be PG-13,” Hughes said and then followed up with labeling it as either being “a challenge” or a “hind-ridge.”

Albert also said it’s going to be a challenging task and he may have to strip down a lot of the material just to simplify everything for audiences, so it would be understandable.
About the 2-part plan, Albert said he’s not big on sequels so he might not return for the second part.. he’s just going to focus on the first film

AKIRA, based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s six-volume graphic novel masterwork, is set in a futuristic post-nuclear war Tokyo in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang’s leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swathe of destruction but the movie version has always been planned to be set in “New Manhattan,” a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago.

Major League 4 May Step Up To The Plate Soon

Major League 4 May Step Up To The Plate Soon

Bob Uecker let the cat out of the bag last year, announcing at a sports game (well, of course!) that a new "Major League" movie was in the works.

David S.Ward, the writer/director of the hit 1989 movie today who backed up Uecker's comments, confirming that there is indeed a new film in the works - and unlike the last sequel (the poorly-received "Major League : Back in the Minors'' that Ward wasn't involved with), it'll reunite the original cast.

"We're actually talking about doing one right now. I've written, what I see, as Major League 3. We're putting that together as we speak - in fact, next week I'm off to talk to James Robinson at Morgan Creek about it.

"It's 20 years later, and Wild Thing comes out of retirement to work with this 19-year-old player", Ward says of the storyline. "We've actually got three new characters in the new film. And if the new film is popular, they could carry the franchise on".

Though Ward, whose other credits include the Oscar Winner "The Sting'' and "Sleepless in Seattle'', hopes to get Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen and even, Wesley Snipes back for "Major League 4'', he's so far only spoken to Charlie Sheen about it.

"He's excited to do it if and when it happens", says Ward. "But he can't shoot it this year, because he's back doing Two-and-a-Half Men, but we could potentially shoot it next year - in his hiatus from the show".

Megan Fox Wants To Play A Lesbian Superhero In "Gen 13"

Megan Fox Wants To Play A Lesbian Superhero In "Gen 13"

Megan Fox recently talked about her upcoming projects and a project that she'd like to be a part of, she was quoted saying;

"I don't want people to protest this, but I would like to be Rainmaker in 'Gen 13' if they ever made that into a movie,"

she told Fox News.

"She's a Native American, and I have a little bit of that blood in me," she said about the role, before adding "It would be a bit of a stretch - but if Jake Gyllenhaal can be the Prince of Persia, I think that I can do that."

Rainmaker is a fictional character from the popular Gen 13 comic book series. She has the power to manipulate the weather and water with her thoughts and is also an expert in combat. When Rainmaker isn't fighting super villains she is promoting equal rights and preaching to her team mates.

Fox also announced that she wasn't returning to Transformers 3 and that she could next be seen in "Passion Play" along side Mickey Rourke.

She is also linked along side Brian Austin Green to "Fathom" which is also a comic book. She's also co-producing this project.

First Look At Puss In Boots

First Look At Puss In Boots

To all those who thought we might use a different word for cat in the headline above, shame on you. Now, on with the story… While the big news this weekend has been about Pixar’s latest success, DreamWorks shoved the first image from Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots into the world, along with more details about the story and casting.

The stand-alone Puss adventure will find the feisty feline (voiced as usual by Antonio Banderas) taking on a mission to steal the famous, golden egg-laying goose of fairy tale fame.

To complete the job, he teams up with Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis, the most popular comedian-turned-actor of the moment, given how many jobs he’s got lined up), a criminal mastermind, and the savvy Kitty, voiced by Salma Hayek.

Voice recording for this one has been underway for a few months now, with Banderas and Hayek apparently getting to share booth time occasionally so they can riff off one another. Should help with the catty chemistry, at least.

This first pic below is from the official site, which basically features just that and the rough synopsis for now.

Tomorrow, Our Heroes Will Be Digital By Jonathan Cyfer

Tomorrow, Our Heroes Will Be Digital

I've just read several announcements such as DC Comics Brings Batman and Pals to iPad, PSP, saying that our superhero comic books have now gone digital. In addition to Wired.com, DC has issued it's own press release on this monumental event. With the launching of Kindle by Amazon some time ago, there was a collective groan among bibliophiles that the hard copy text book was dying and only the digital incarnation would remain. Now it seems this is happening in the comic book world as well.

You can already access comic books online such as the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited collection. Free samples are even available from a wide span of Marvel comic history spanning the 1940s to the present. I find myself wondering how high the value of older hard copy comic books will be when they are no longer produced. But what does this have to do with films? Nothing and everything.

It's widely believed that the modern comic book hero was created in 1938 with the advent of Superman, although the world's first costumed hero actually appeared in the newspaper comics section two years earlier in the form of Lee Falk's brilliantly created legend The Phantom. While many other superpowered characters have been developed over the years, Superman, Batman, and Captain America, our earliest heroes, have always been at the forefront of the printed page and the silver screen. Generations have come and gone since their creation, but our classic heroes are immortal.

That's not to say the form in which they are presented remains the same. As I've mentioned, both DC and Marvel have entered the world of digital publishing and it's likely that by the time today's children become adults (and perhaps significantly sooner), reading comic books will be exclusive to tablet-like devices such as today's Kindle and iPad. What about films?

It's difficult to escape the incessant buzz of the IMAX/3D movie "craze". A more primitive form of 3D made it's debut in the 1950s but died a necessary death, as the techonlogy was not sustainable for the majority of films of that era. With the birth of digital film production, this has changed. The same basic technology that lets us read Superman's latest adventures on an iPad also will make it possible for us to see his next film in larger-than-life three dimensions.

I don't know that I'm very good at predicting long term trends, but consider this. How long will it be before the barrier between the static image on an iPad and the motion image on the movie screen/TV screen/computer monitor becomes blurred and even finally disappears? Today's books aren't just books anymore. A technical book, such as this one about GIMP soon to be published, isn't a book in the classic sense. It's an eBook, suitable for downloading onto a tablet device, but it's also more. Within the text are links to both screencasts and podcasts, augmenting the static text content of the book. You don't just read a book anymore, you watch small movies providing instructions and listen to audio sidebars, as well. How could we apply this concept to comic book superheroes?

Imagine reading your favorite Batman comic book on an iPad and being invited to click a link to view the newest trailer for a forthcoming movie about the same character. You could also be watching a video stream of a Superman TV show that links you to related comic books, t-shirts, and other merchandise. Your superhero fiction experience could be completely digital with a multi-media presentation, and with everything interconnected within a single interface.

The long awaited 3D Television seems not that far away now and how long will it be before we can have all of the experiences I just related served up to us on portable heads up displays (HUD)? The only thing better would be having everything fed to us in a Star Trek-like holodeck.

While entertainment and fantasy-philes might consider this paradise, the blurring of the lines between different medium and then serving that entertainment to us using a device we can wear and carry anywhere, also blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. Today, many people have some or most of their primary relationships online with other people they've never even met in person. The quality and character of what we call "human relationships" is already morphing into the realm of the virtual. Will our lived experiences also morph to the point where there's only a thin digital line between what we consider "real" and what we call "entertainment"?

Whether or not things go that far, it seems reasonably certain that the division lines between books, comic books, graphic novels, television, PlayStation, computers, and motion pictures will become increasingly thin within the next few years. It may be hard for older adults to assimilate how information is packaged and presented in the digital age, but to quote Marty McFly, " I guess you guys aren't ready for that, yet. But your kids are gonna love it".

Trollz Movie Is Going To Be A Reality

Trollz Movie Is Going To Be A Reality

I am jumping out of my chair with joy, a Trollz movie is in the works.  I can't wait to have even more little annoying things to step on through out my house thanks Dreamworks. This bud is for you!

Did any of you even watch the cartoon? Why oh Why am I reporting this?

The Good Luck Trolls, with their frizzy, pastel-colored hair, are coming to the big screen via DreamWorks Animation.

The Glendale-based animation house, which has already turned an ogre into the successful "Shrek" franchise, announced Tuesday that it has pacted with Denmark's Dam Things, which controls the toy line, to develop an animated feature.

The brother-sister writing team of Adam Wilson and Melanie Wilson LaBracio will pen the screenplay, and Dannie Festa of Festa Entertainment, who brought the package to DreamWorks, will executive produce.

The troll doll was created in 1959 by Danish fisherman and woodcutter Thomas Dam, when he carved a doll based on Scandinavian trolls for his daughter Lajla. The toy line gained popularity in Europe and the U.S. during the early '60s, becoming a fad embraced by kids and the counter-culture.

Because Dam Things, the Scandinavian company that produced the toys, lost control of its copyright after failing to comply with U.S. laws, imitators flooded the market in the '70s and '80s. However, as a result of a 1994 Congressional law that restored copyright protection to a number of foreign works, the Dam family regained authority.

In 2005, DIC Entertainment produced the animated series "Trollz," with an accompanying doll line aimed at girls, but the modernized version didn't have the same success as the classic versions.

In striking the deal with DWA, Niels Dam, the dollmaker's son who now owns the family business, said, "My father would have been very happy to know that his Troll has found its dream partner in DreamWorks Animation."

Calle Ostergaard, CEO of Dam Things, added, "We have been planning to bring the Good Luck Troll toy line back into homes around the world, and we are excited to see how the talented storytellers and artists at DreamWorks Animation will bring them to life."
