Top 10 Movies of 2016

2016's top films feature a diversity of genres, but was the industry better off as a result? Story by Matt Cummings I think it's safe to say that 2016 was one of the worst years in recent memory: shootings, rising tensions abroad, and (another) highly-divisive election was book-ended by high-profile deaths that began their march in January (David Bowie), ripped through the Summer (Prince), and ended with an awful December (George Michael, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds). Similarly, we saw a movie industry plagued with more than a dozen high-profile failures and outright disappointments ( Independence Day: Resurgence, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Norm of the North, The Fifth Wave among many, many others). But, a few films did rise to the top, punctuated by stellar performances, incredible action sequences, smart comedy, and beautiful musical moments. As always, our list is generated on factors such as memorability, quality, and a completely selfish desire of whet

Moana Wins Thanksgiving Box Office

Disney's very good year continued apace across the typically busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend – which for movies usually stretches from the Wednesday before the actual celebration. Moana , the company's latest animated offering, got off to a strong start at the American box office, earning $55.5 million for the weekend and $81.1 million across the period from its release on Wednesday, according to studio estimates. That figure means Moana enters the charts as Disney's second-highest opening in the Thanksgiving period, behind just Frozen, and seems likely to have the same longevity – adding in its overseas totals, the movie is sailing towards $100 million after just a few days. With the all-powerful 'toon sweeping into the top spot, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them had to vacate its throne after just one week, but still earned a healthy $45.1 million across the three-day weekend. And Doctor Strange slipped to third with $13.3 million after four weeks in th

#MarvelCollectorCorps Review: October 2016

Our (once again) late arrival of Marvel Collector Corps' DOCTOR STRANGE box shows the sub's best and worst faces. Review by Matt Cummings Funko's Marvel Collector Corps was once the top of the heap of sub boxes. But with the disastrous Marvel Stupor Box and August's less-than-awesome Spider-man, we're beginning to look elsewhere. This month's Doctor Strange box is no different, at once displaying Funko's best and worst faces as we consider our future investment. The Promise Before we begin, let's look at the original deal and MCC's current offering: promising a value of $50, regular boxes would keep the "fluff" (their words) to a minimum with Funko partnering each time to deliver an exclusive figure. Regardless if you joined at the Founders level or took on a per-box delivery, the Year One box was offered for an additional cost of $135 after tax. That's approximately the price of 4 regular boxes. Founders (like mys

As always, thanks to everyone for your continued support, and we'll see you at one of

Doctor Strange' Opens Huge

Doctor Strange opened to an even better-than-expected $85 million from 3,882 theaters at the North American box office, further expanding Marvel Studios and Disney’s superhero universe and putting the movie’s early global total at a magical $325.4 million. Overseas, it earned another $118.7 million this weekend for a foreign cume of $240.4 million (it began rolling out in select foreign markets more than a week ago.) Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the lesser-known superhero Stephen Strange, gives Disney five of the 10 top openings of 2016 so far, and is another coup for Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and Disney’s marketing team. Also, it beat the first installments in the Thor, Captain America and Ant-Man franchises. In the film, Cumberbatch plays a top surgeon who, after his hands are injured in a car accident, seeks out the help of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), a master of the mystical arts. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams also star in Doctor Stra

Movie Review: #DrStrange

Doctor Strange is a trippy, fantastical voyage that also has something to say. Review by Matt Cummings If the idea of yet another superhero comicbook-inspired throwdown has you wishing for more, your prayers are about to be answered: Doctor Strange is a wild mind-trip that actually has something to say about the future of this film universe without bashing you over the head with a hammer or a giant green fist. Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon, able to save the next damaged human but also ready to boast about it. When he's involved in a savage car crash that leaves his hands permanently wrecked (and his job prospects a total zero), Strange spends his fortune looking for a traditional cure. Journeying to the east, he meets Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who introduces him to The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), a powerful sorceress who employs truly magical means to correct people's ailments. Strange is unconvinc
