The Counselor Review. Does Ridley Scott's Return To Crime Thrillers Pay Off?

The Counselor Review
By: MattInRC

TWITTER: Does Ridley Scott's return to crime thrillers pay off in The Counselor? Not so much.

The well-cast but poorly-edited The Counselor takes too long to suck us in.

Warning: Boring times and SPOILERS ahead!

Do you have control of your life once the 'big decision' is made? Job? Marriage? Family? How about a Juarez drug deal gone horribly wrong? That's the premise of The Counselor, a well-cast but horribly-edited film that stunningly wastes all of its assets, making us realize that bad decisions do have consequences. A lawyer (Michael Fassbender) on the financial ropes enters the drug trafficking world, only to see his 'investment' stolen by the scheming girlfriend of his naive partner Reiner (Javier Bardem). Malkina (Cameron Diaz) loves the fine life, climbing the ladder by screwing and (probably) killing her way through men and their money. She's the quintessential 'damaged goods' girl, sexually available, and displaying her exhibitionist style without abandon. Although Counselor's life appears to be more stable with his engagement to Laura (Penelope Cruz), all is not well - his deep financial troubles have forced him to hatch a 'zero-risk' plan to ship drugs across the border, with the help of the smooth-talking Westray (Brad Pitt). The drugs are stolen, then stolen again, leaving Counselor and his partners with more than debt on their hands. As the wire begins to tighten around their necks - one who literally experiences this ugly fate in Act 3 - Counselor must protect Laura while cleaning up a mess he can't begin to understand.

Watching The Counselor is almost like walking in on a conversation that's half way through - we never know the reasons for Counselor's financial issues, and the first half of the film is spent in needless conversations from our dealers, handlers, and the thieves, along with set ups that don't deliver on any level or are jettisoned once the real tension gets going. Director Ridley Scott has dropped the Science Fiction genre in favor of a project that looks and sounds good, but is devoid of a proper edit. Too many scenes in The Counselor could have been trimmed or entirely left out, which would have left a tighter and more effective piece. Instead, we get rolls of dialogue about choices and fate and gynecology, delivered quite well by Pitt, Bardem, and a nice cameo in Act 3. By that time, we're not as invested as we could have been, and No Country for Old Men Writer Cornac McCarthy's sometimes brilliant takes drift away into a menagerie of ultra-violence and dumped bodies. Fassbender's visceral reaction at the end of the film could have been Oscar-worthy material, but our boredom left us to wonder what could have been. For a creative team of this caliber to miss the boat so completely just goes to show how being passionate on a project can also be your undoing.

The Counselor drones on with too much of everything except what it really needed: a connected and powerful cautionary tale about drug dealing, sex, and the completely untrustworthy people who probably inhibit the trade. Instead, we emerge from the theater glad to say we saw it, but are totally unable to recommend it. The Counselor is rated R for everything in the book and has a runtime of 117 minutes.

Tom Cruise To Go Like Hell

Tom Cruise is reteaming with his Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski for Go Like Hell, a racing drama set up at Fox.

The project tells the true story of the competition between the Ford Motor Company and Italian sports car designer Enzo Ferrari, which culminated at the 1966 Le Mans race.

It is based on the book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, written by A.J. Baime and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2009.

Michael Mann was once attached to direct the project.

The project is in the early development stages and the script is likely to be overhauled to suit the stylings of Cruise and Kosinski. The studio is said to be making this a high priority with a plan of getting it before cameras next year.

Episode VII To Be Written By J.J. Abrams & Lawrence Kasdan

MASTER FILMMAKING TEAM ANNOUNCED FOR STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

As Episode VII continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, is a veteran of several classic Lucasfilm productions, writing the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark and serving as co-screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Acclaimed director and screenwriter Abrams' credits include Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Fringe, and Lost.

"I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script," states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. "There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production."

Location scouting, production design, casting, and costume design are already underway on Episode VII. A team of gifted artists are working to bring the latest installment of the Star Wars saga, including director of photography Dan Mindel (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), production designers Rick Carter (Lincoln, Avatar, Forrest Gump) and Darren Gilford (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), costume designer Michael Kaplan (Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Fight Club),special effects supervisor Chris Corbould (Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), sound designer Ben Burtt (Lincoln, Wall-E, Star Wars: Episodes I-VI), re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol), supervising sound editor Matthew Wood (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Master, There Will Be Blood) of Skywalker Sound, and visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett (Star Trek Into Darkness, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith) of Industrial Light & Magic. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios for an expected 2015 release.

THE STARVING GAMES Opens November 8th

BEFORE YOU CATCH FIRE, CATCH-UP WITH KETCHUP’S THE STARVING GAMES* the film was Written and Directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer.

THE STARVING GAMES opens in Select Cities, VOD and Digital Download November 8, 2013.(*you knew this was coming)

Set in the most depressing corner of a post-apocalyptic future, our hero Kantmiss Evershot (Maiara Walsh) volunteers to take her manipulative younger sister’s place in the 75th annual “Starving Games.” In doing so, she must leave behind her smoldering just-a-friend Dale (Brant Daugherty) and team up with the geeky baker’s son Peter Malarkey (Cody Allen Christian) in a fight for her life. But wait, there’s more! She could also win an old ham, a coupon for a footlong sub at a six-inch price, and a partially-eaten pickle!

In The Starving Games, Friedberg and Seltzer’s sixth cinematic spoof of popular box-office hits, the prolific parody duo has its sights trained on the adventure blockbuster The Hunger Games! It’s all the laughs and half the calories as they sling dozens of cock-eyed, barbed arrows at sci-fi, action and fantasy films from The Avengers and Oz the Great and Powerful to pop culture characters and celebrities like Harry Potter and Taylor Swift.

The Starving Games stars Maiara Walsh (“Switched at Birth”) as Kantmiss Evershot, the eagle-eyed archer whose bravery and skills inspire the masses along with trending topics on Twitter®; Cody Allen Christian (“Surrogates,” “Pretty Little Liars,”) as Peter Malarkey, the geeky young man who volunteers alongside Kantmiss; Brant Daugherty (“Dancing with the Stars,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “Days of Our Lives”) as Dale, Kantmiss’s beau who’s left behind to watch – and simmer; Ross Wyngaarden (“Bonnie & Clyde: Justified”) as Marco, a ruthless player handy with a blade; Dean West (“Monster Hunters”) as Seleca, the game’s controller and Diedrich Bader (Vampires Suck, Meet the Spartans) as President Snowballs, the malevolent, but ratings-conscious ruler. The comedy is directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (Meet the Spartans, Vampires Suck) and is produced by Peter Safran (The Conjuring, Vampires Suck).

Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, comic violence, language and partial nudity.

Beauty Pageant Clip From Bad Grandpa

Here is a new clip from the upcoming film Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.

86 year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companion, his 8 year-old Grandson Billy in Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. This October, the signature Jackass character Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and Billy (Jackson Nicoll) will take movie audiences along for the most insane hidden camera road trip ever captured on film.

Along the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places and situations that give new meaning to the term childrearing. The duo will encounter male strippers, disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens.

Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy.

BIG WAVE SEASON STARTS NOVEMBER 1st

BIG WAVE SEASON STARTS NOVEMBER 1st. And  Traditional Ceremonial Paddle Out to Take Place Friday, October 25

The official contest window for the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational presented by GoPro is set to open on November 1 and run through Mach 31, 2014. With as little as 24 hours notice, the international roster of invited big wave surfers are called to action when the giant waves and conditions are just right to hold the day-long contest.

To celebrate the opening of this new season, the big wave surf community will gather for the traditional Opening Ceremony and Paddle Out at the beach at Mavericks on Friday, October 25, at 2 p.m. While this is not the official contest day, it is an opportunity for the surfers and community to gather and celebrate the upcoming season.

"The Opening Ceremony is our annual ‘gathering of the tribe’ – a chance to get together before the season opens,” said Contest Director and Mavericks Pioneer Jeff Clark. "It’s a more relaxed atmosphere than contest day and gives the fans, surfers and local kids a chance to meet the competitors and join them for the ceremonial paddle out."

The Opening Ceremony is a ritual unlike any other, and with a high surf warning this week brings added excitement for the winter season. The ceremony takes place on the beach with family, friends and the community. In the long-honored Hawaiian tradition, surfers then paddle out to the water and form a prayer circle to commemorate the event, show respect to fellow surfers and their safety, and pay tribute to those who have died.

Looking Ahead: Contest Day

When the wave and atmospheric conditions are just right, the contest will be called with as little as 24 hours notice sometime during the contest window. Organizers, county and local agencies, the competitors and fans step into high gear to make it to the small town of Princeton for this world-class event. San Mateo County Sheriff and other agencies coordinate to ease traffic and close access to the beach and the environmentally-sensitive and dangerous cliffs at Mavericks.

To give the public a place to party and watch the action, the Mavericks Viewing Festival will be the epicenter for the contest, and will be held on the grounds of the Oceano Hotel & Spa in Princeton Harbor, Half Moon Bay. Organizers will also have a free live webcast for viewers across the globe.

The Mavericks Viewing Festival will start at 8 a.m. just as the first heat of the contest starts. The festival will run all day long with a live steam of the contest action on jumbo screens. Ticket holders will enjoy live contest coverage and contest updates, interviews, music, giveaways, food and refreshments and a chance to meet the surfers as they come in from the water. The event culminates with the awards ceremony on stage and the crowning of the 2013-14 champion.

Ticket prices start at $15 for general admission, with a limited number VIP packages available. Tickets and detailed information are available at www.MavericksInvitational.com.

Parking will be available at the Half Moon Bay Airport, with proceeds benefiting The Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside. All proceeds will benefit future activities, parks and support for the children of the community. Ticket holders can purchase parking passes when buying festival tickets at MavericksInvitational.com.

The Body Glove Mavericks Invitational presented by GoPro is the world’s premier, high adrenaline, big wave surfing event. This one-day, invitation-only surfing competition is held at the legendary Mavericks surf break located ½ mile offshore at Pillar Point Harbor, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The 24 most daring big-wave surfers in the world will attempt to ride the massive swells on the biggest and best day of the 2013-14 winter season. Two New Trailers For Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

I could waste your time with a preamble filled with Anchorman quotes, or I get right to the good stuff: Paramount has released two new trailers for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Both clips are chock-full of the gleeful absurdity that made the first movie such a delight, as well as a few more hints about the film’s closely guarded plot. (There’s more here than we got in trailer number 1 — including answers about what happened to Veronica and Ron’s relationship.)

As our story begins, Ron (Will Ferrell) has, once again, been eclipsed by his smarter, more capable ladylove Veronica (Christina Applegate). Thankfully for him, new 24-hour global news network GNN is looking for a few good men to join its New York City ranks — providing the perfect opportunity for Ron and the old Channel 4 news team (Paul Rudd, Dave Koechner, and Steve Carell) to get the old band back together. There, they’ll bring a new sense of fluffy fun to a stuffy network run by no-nonsense Linda Jackson (Meagan Good) — who might just be the one lady who can help Ron mend his broken heart.

Also present and accounted for: The news team mistaking a gay man for a vampire. A Winnebago filled with bowling balls, scorpions, and hot oil. Brick (Carell) sobbing at his own funeral, then wearing green pants in front of a green screen. Ron feeding a shark with what appears to be an enormous bottle of milk. (It’s a good choice.) Brian (Rudd) showing off a cabinet filled with whimsically-named condoms like The Responsible Pirate and The Hooded Guest.

The Verdict - Two More New Fall Shows Are Axed. Early Network Cancellations Are Not As Uncommon As You May Think.

The Verdict - Two More New Fall Shows Are Axed
By: MattInRC

Not one but two new fall shows fall to the axe as NBC cleans house. And more are on the way.

It's one thing to have to have the first new show of the fall season cancelled (ABC's Lucky Seven) but to have two NBC shows cancelled at the same time is interesting. It was learned Friday that the network had cancelled both Ironside and Welcome to the Family, outdoing the single rejects from ABC and CBS (We are Men). NBC had been late to the cancellation party, but the news on Friday sent a clear message: if you don't have the immediate audience numbers, we'll move on with something else. For now, that 'something else' is repeats of favorite shows (CBS will re-run Big Bang Theory while NBC will air new episodes of The Voice and Dateline), while the networks reload. Late-season replacements - shows originally deemed not good enough for the fall run but now suddenly look appealing - are probably on the horizon. NBC will soon air Dracula and FOX (who has yet to announce cancellations) is adding the Karl Urban cop show Almost Human.

Our theory about early numbers seems to pen out, especially when you compare cancellations from previous years. According to IMDB, 5 shows from the 2011-2012 season were cancelled by October 20th, and 3 were axed by this time last season. None of them were viewed as 'hit status' potential to begin with, and each experienced poor early ratings that continued to decline before being fed to the sharks. While it's not abnormal to see shows cancelled early in their runs, imagine if NBC had pulled the plug on season 1 of Seinfeld, or had killed off Star Trek after just two episodes. Potential fans have little time to access programming, especially if the network has already deemed a show to be filler for an upcoming premiere. This seems short-sighted to us, as shows need time to cultivate viewers - whether Hollywood really cares or is driven by ad revenue is anyone's guess. But, the facts are plain: if you show doesn't get the viewers, it will be axed.

More appear ready for the chopping block. Betrayal, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Nashville, The Neighbors, Trophy Wife, and Super Fun Night are all hurting for ratings, along with veteran shows like The Good Wife, The Mentalist, and Revolution. In fact, 12 or more shows could be cancelled by Christmas, and we haven't discussed cable shows that could see the same fate. No matter what happens, this is shaping up to be an interesting year for television.

What Fall shows do you predict will be cancelled? Comment below and join the conversation!

Red-Band Trailer For Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Who wants another serving of Irving? Watch the red band trailer for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

In theaters this Friday October 25, 2013.
