New FilmDistrict's "Drive" Trailer Starring Ryan Gosling

DRIVE is one of those films that needs to be seen in theaters and should not be missed. At the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Drive was lauded with praise and even received a standing ovation. Reviews from critics have been positive, with many drawing comparisons to work from previous eras.

Film is due out on September 16, 2011.

Ryan Gosling stars as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. Though a loner by nature, Driver can't help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a vulnerable young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac).

Breakout Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (THE PUSHER Trilogy, BRONSON, VALHALLA RISING) throttles into the Hollywood fast lane with the precision-crafted action caper DRIVE.

Ryan Gosling stars as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. After a heist intended to pay off Standard's protection money spins unpredictably out of control, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). But when he realizes that the gangsters are after more than the bag of cash in his trunk-that they're coming straight for Irene and her son-Driver is forced to shift gears and go on offense.

Bestselling Novel "The Finest Hours" Being Made Into Film By Disney Pictures

While the summer dealmaking has tapered off in the dog days of August, a big one went down yesterday. In a deal worth high-six against seven-figures, Walt Disney Pictures acquired a package to make a movie out of the bestselling book The Finest Hours, with Oscar-nominated The Fighter scribes Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson to write the story of a daring Coast Guard rescue off Cape Cod in 1952. The project was set up through Jim Whitaker's Entertainment and he will produce with Dorothy Aufiero, who worked with the writers as the original producer of The Fighter.

Published in 2009 by Scribner, the Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias-authored book tells the story of a Coast Guard rescue undertaken after two oil tankers were torn in half by treacherous waves during a deadly nor'easter blizzard. There were four rescue efforts, including two undertaken by a handful of men on two old, wooden, motorized 36-foot lifeboats. The men understood they had no business fighting frozen gale winds and seas but went anyway in an attempt to rescue the 84 men who were floating on halves of the cracked and sinking oil tankers.

Whitaker, the former Imagine Entertainment exec who directed the 9/11 documentary Rebirth that Showtime airs on Sept. 11, set up the project under his first-look producing deal at Disney. There, he's in post-production on the Peter Hedges-directed The Odd Life of Timothy Green and is developing the action thriller Unlimited with Fringe writer Brad Caleb Kane and Hexum with Children of Men's David Arata. Whitaker described the book as "a riveting story of courage, and the fact that it's true makes it all the more compelling," he said. "Its characters and themes epitomize the stories we gravitate towards and are eager to produce at Disney."

Like Crazy Full Trailer

Paramount Vantage has released the trailer for the Like Crazy. The film was directed by Drake Dormeus and stars Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence and Charlie Bewley. This has been one of the most talked romantic films in years.

Like Crazy is a love letter to long distance relationships, a more realistic version of Going the Distance for a slightly younger crowd. Show me this movie a year ago, and I guarantee I wouldn't have connected with it as much as I did now, and that's because I'm going through something similar in my own life. This movie is deeply personal: if you've ever had an intense relationship torn apart by distance, it's impossible not to relate to it; if you've never experienced something like that, it will likely leave you cynical and put off.

It's pure in its emotions and technically proficient in translating them to the big screen. The cinematography was gorgeous, the score was moving, and the writing was spectacular.

Cut Loose With The Second Footloose Trailer

If you were looking forward to the remake of Footloose we have the second trailer for the film. There isn't much to say but WHY?

Watch the trailer after the Jump...

Writer/Director Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow,” “Black Snake Moan”) delivers a new take of the beloved 1984 classic film, “Footloose.” Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont’s local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister’s troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process.

Justin Lin Talks Terminator With Arnold and James Cameron

We have reported before that Justin Lin will be directing the next installment in the Terminator franchise. Today ThePlaylist is reporting that Lin has talked to Arnold and James Cameron about the upcoming film.

He is what they talked about

“ ‘Terminator’ is something I’ve been having a lot of fun with,” Lin told us in an interview to support forthcoming video release of “Fast Five.” “Just even this week, I had a great meeting with Arnold and James Cameron, just sitting down unofficially. And James is so gracious because he’s not part of the project, he’s not going to be producing, but it was great of him just as a filmmaker to take time out to just talk.”

His next will film will be The sixth film in the Fast and Furious franchise. Fast Five which Lin directed earned over $600 million worldwide, “Fast Five” is one of the biggest hits of the year, and not only is it the most successful entry in the franchise so far, director Justin Lin proved there is still plenty of fuel in the tank and Universal agrees—they have already dated a sequel for May 24, 2013.

He goes on:

“I’ve had to kind of walk away from a lot of stuff,” he explained. “Because I’m in a position that I can at least assess what I want to do with it. I feel like with a lot of these other franchises, it’s hard to be a director for hire, because you want to go in, and if you’re going to like join something that exists, I think it’s going to have to be built from the ground up, in a way. I think having a filmmaker approach to a franchise is the ultimate goal.” Although he insisted he was grateful for the opportunity to be considered to direct “Die Hard 5,” he reveals why he wound up not taking it on. “For many of the projects, I feel very privileged, but I just know it wasn’t the right situation. And the first ‘Die Hard’ changed me as a kid when I watched it. But ‘Die Hard 5’ is just not something that I’m going to do, or I’m interested in.”

“I don’t know where it’s going to lead, but I never thought at this level I’m going to be able to meet filmmakers and be in situations where they’re that gracious and insightful and so inclusive. And that’s a franchise that I’m working on right now, but again, if I’m going to be kind of the gatekeeper to it, I want to make sure that I can hopefully build it up the right way – and so far that’s been the most fun. Just to be able to take James Cameron’s brain and for him to be so open even though he has no stakes in it, just as a human being, that’s something that I will always remember as a part of my journey as a filmmaker.”

Marvel To Unearth 2 Secret Movies in 2014

Sony announced last week that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be released on May 2, 2014, before they even have any idea whether we like the first film in the rebooted franchise. But that's not all Marvel has in store for us in 2014.

Disney announced today it would be releasing TWO more Marvel movies in 2014—one on May 16, 2014, two weeks after the coming Spidey sequel, and another on June 27, 2014—but they're not saying a word about just which superheroes will be invading theaters two summers from now.

By then, we'll have seen Avengers (May 4, 2012), Iron Man 3 (May 3, 2013) and Thor 2 (July 26, 2013)—so where does that leave us?

WIll it be time for a return of one of the superheroes we've already seen on screen, maybe a Captain America 2? Or will we get to see someone new, like Dr. Strange or the Guardians of the Galaxy?

Eddie Murphy To Voice Hong Kong Phooey

Eddie Murphy, who's lent his distinctive voice to the character of Donkey in the four Shrek movies, is taking on another animated character, Hong Kong Phooey, in a film of the same name based on the Hanna-Barbera animated TV series from the ‘70s about a dog who becomes a kung fu crime fighter.

The property revolves around a dog, Penry, to be played by Murphy, who is granted mystic powers, including the ability to walk, talk and do kung fu. Donning a costume to become Hong Kong Phooey, he sets out to combat criminals. Scatman Crothers provided the character’s voice in the TV series.

Alex Zamm (Tooth Fairy 2) is directing Alcon Entertainment’s big screen version of Hong Kong Phooey, which will combine live action with animation. Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce with Jay Stern and Brett Ratner. Steven P. Wegner will exec produce.

Murphy,  also voiced the character of Mushu, the Dragon, in Dreamworks Animation’s Mulan. He’ll next be seen in Universal’s Tower Heist, starring opposite Ben Stiller for director Ratner, and Dreamworks’ A Thousand Words.

Did Howard Stern Leak "Super 8"

In a bizarre development that I can only imagine will be very embarrassing to Sirius XM's morning man Howard Stern, a bootlegged copy of the JJ Abrams-directed Super 8 has shown up on content-thieving websites. The print is watermarked with the Paramount Pictures logo, and "H Stern" in the right-hand corner. Film companies and networks like HBO routinely personalize advance screeners to safeguard against piracy. There is widespread speculation the leak came from a DVD sent to the show.

I see that already, the Sternfannetwork.com features an "over/under" asking commenters to decide if Stern got $50,000 for posting the film. That is preposterous. Stern receives advance screeners so he can talk knowledgeably about upcoming films he likes, and because he does superb interviews with directors and stars. He will be upset if his show breached a trust with Abrams, a longtime friend who once thrilled Stern's daughters by putting them on his series Felicity. That is something a dad never forgets. I recall that Stern interviewed Abrams when the director made the rounds to promote Super 8.

I'm told by studio insiders that Paramount indeed made a copy of Super 8 for the Stern show and that one was leaked. The studio has already conducted its own investigation. Right now, they have no indication that anyone from Stern's show was involved, and don't know how the copy made it into the hands of pirates. It will be difficult to figure that out, because the movie opened June 10 and the disc would have been sent a long time ago. But if the disc was passed among Stern show staffers after the boss watched it, and it fell into the hands of someone with the audacity to post a copy that bore Stern's name, I wouldn't be surprised if Stern will want his own investigation. This potentially hurts his show and its credibility with studios. More than anything, this is a cautionary tale to those of us in the media who get early screeners (especially during Oscar season) and then have everyone begging to borrow the DVDs. Super 8 has completed its stateside theatrical run, and the $50 million film has grossed over $185 million worldwide. But having a copy blasted on the Internet potentially dents the film's ancillary fortunes.
