Wicked Film Will Be Released In 2019

Universal's Wicked is finally a go.

The studio announced Thursday that the musical adaptation of the hugely popular Broadway show and book will open in theaters Dec. 20, 2019. That puts Wicked in direct competition with a yet-to-be-revealed live-action fairy-tale movie from Disney.

Stephen Daldry has long been set to direct Wicked for producer Marc Platt and Universal, who are also producers of the long-running stage show, which is based on Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, collaborators on the Broadway show, are reuniting for the film adaptation.

Wicked is an alternative telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 story of the same name, told from the perspective of the witches.

The Broadway show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won three, propelling the careers of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, among others. Now in its 13th year, Wicked has bested Rent to become the 10th longest-running Broadway show of all time.

In March, the production's grosses crossed the $1 billion mark on Broadway, with global ticket sales of around $4 billion.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Is Heading To Comic-Con

Disney-Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is heading to Comic-Con next month.

Watch the video after the Jump...

Director James Gunn revealed the news Thursday in a special video message for fans, coinciding with Chris Pratt wrapping his filming for the sequel. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens May 5, 2017.

Gunn posted a four-minute video on his Facebook page, largely dedicated to him and Pratt thanking the cast and crew for their work.

“Everyone here has busted their asses,” Pratt asserted. “This is going to be the greatest spectacle film of all time.”

Pratt also praised Gunn for delivering the film on time — the shoot took 90 days — and under budget. Gunn dropped the Comic-Con announcement at the very end of the video.

“We, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, are coming to San Diego Comic-Con this year,” he said. “We’re going to be there, I’m going to be there, Chris Pratt is going to be there, a bunch of the gang is going this year and we’re going to show you something pretty cool.”

Marvel evoked a strong positive reaction three years ago from a sizzle reel for the original Guardians of the Galaxy, which still stunned the industry by grossing more than $770 million worldwide. The sequel also stars Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan and Djimon Hounsou.

It’s one of the first announcements of a major tentpole film and stars that will be appearing at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which will run July 21-24.

Movie Review: Central Intelligence

Struggled with the story, but delivered with good action packed scenes to make up for the lack of substance.

Review by : Erika Ashley

After high school the lives of the most popular kid and the nerdy laughing stock of the school lead drastically different lives. The all-around good guy that was voted most likely to succeed, Calvin Joyner, is living in a stagnant mediocre existence and begins to question his life choices. Just days before their twenty-year high school reunion, Bob Stone previously known as Robbie Weirdicht, reaches out to Calvin in an attempt to reconnect with his idol. Calvin agrees to meet up for drinks but as they hang out and catch up things make a turn for the weird as the night progresses. The next day Calvin is confronted by the CIA at his very doorstep and is questioned on his allegiance with Agent Stone. Calvin struggles with his loss of confidence and need for excitement as he goes on a wild and life threatening ride with his old acquaintance.

Let’s start with the general story and plot – the idea that two completely opposite characters are hilariously thrown into a situation that requires them to join forces in order to save the free world, is over done. This film doesn’t just take on one cliché comedy plot line but doubles down and throws in a law enforcement story where a civilian and CIA agent become a ragtag team of conflicting misfits but somehow wittily scathes past gun shots, explosions, near death events and saves the day. In addition to the overdone concept there is a continuous flip-flopping where the Director/Screenwriter - Rawson Marshall Thurber tries to pull a fast one and throw the audience off the scent of who could be the bad guy and is the good guy really good. By the beginning of the third act the constant shifting and back and forth gets tiring and far too confusing that it doesn’t even matter which character is bad or good. You almost just want the film to wrap it up already.

Which brings us to the acting. This is not a funny comedy movie but instead is a comedy movie with funny parts. Calvin Joyner, played by Kevin Hart, is absolutely hilarious because Hart does what he does best. Act like himself and he does a great job. He’s funny just like he is in every other film he’s in because of his dedication to his one solid character – Kevin Hart. Robbie Weirdicht, played by Dwayne Johnson, on the other hand is an entirely hot mess of a character. Instead of sticking to what he knows best, Johnson tries his hand at character acting and does a poorly overcommitted attempt at being the awkward fat-kid friend. He’s over the top and obviously trying far too hard which results in a poorly delivered and underdeveloped character. If it weren’t for Hart’s solid performance and superb comedic acting this film would have been a complete flop.

Overall Central Intelligence struggled with the story, but delivered with good action packed scenes to make up for the lack of substance. Some of the jokes landed soft laughs but rarely provided gut busting laugh out loud moments until the last 10-minutes of the film. Which was very unfortunate because with the decent cast selection, outside of Johnson and Hart, this could have been a real blockbuster comedy. Instead I think that given all the hype and over promotion it’ll be a blip between larger films like Finding Dory and Independence Day: Resurgence. For Hart’s short stature he did his best carrying this film while Johnson was the rock that sank it. Skip the theater and rent this after summer when you need a decent chuckle this fall.

Central Intelligence is rated PG-13 for crude and suggestive humor, some nudity, action violence and brief strong language and has a 107-minute runtime.

Tyler Hoechlin Cast As Superman In Supergirl

There was recently a shake-up at Warner Bros./DC, one of the results of which has apparently been the discarding of the corporate rule that none of DC's big three (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) could appear on the small screen. No doubt executive producer Greg Berlanti was able to leverage his television success with a number of comics characters to work out an exception: Superman is coming to Supergirl this fall, and actor Tyler Hoechlin has been cast in the role.

Enthuses executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, "Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

Hoechlin's credits include Everybody Wants Some!, Road To Perdition, Hall Pass, Solstice, Teen Wolf and the forthcoming Stratton.

Previous actors who have played Superman include Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Bob Holiday, Christopher Reeve, John Haymes Newton, Gerard Christopher, Dean Cain, Tom Welling, Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill.

Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn...or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.

ROSEANNE FOR PRESIDENT Trailer

IFC Films' ROSEANNE FOR PRESIDENT trailer is here. The film is coming out on July 1st in New York/Los Angeles/On Demand.

27 years after ROSEANNE BARR’s groundbreaking sitcom “Roseanne” became the #1 show on television, ROSEANNE FOR PRESIDENT! brings you the story of the Emmy Award-winning actress and trailblazing comedian’s 2012 gonzo campaign for president of the United States. Having written and created a sitcom that changed the cultural landscape by revolutionizing what Americans think of family, class, race, gender, and gay rights, Roseanne is uniquely qualified to fix – well, everything.

A DOCUMENTARY BY ERIC WEINRIB
STARRING ROSEANNE BARR, 2012 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Through the warped lens of the Barr Campaign, this surreal dark comedy examines the impact Roseanne’s work has had on society and who she is as a person. Fearlessly speaking truth to power comes with a price and Roseanne has taken some bumps and bruises along the way. The movie digs deep into Roseanne’s past, unearthing a personality that even the filmmakers had no idea they would encounter. What begins as a political journey becomes a raw and revealing portrait of a comedic icon.

ORLANDO JONES JOINS #AMERICANGODS

AMERICAN GODS” ADDS MORE DEITIES AS ORLANDO JONES JOINS THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SERIES AS MR. NANCY.

Starz and FremantleMedia North America (FMNA) announced today that Orlando Jones (“Madiba,” “Sleepy Hollow”) will play Mr. Nancy in the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel, American Gods.

Jones will play Mr. Nancy, the old African trickster god more commonly known as Anansi, and one of Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) oldest confidantes. Like Wednesday, Nancy is ready to bring this new America (and its new gods) to its knees, desperate to light a fire and watch the whole world burn.

In a career spanning 30 years, Orlando Jones' versatility is well documented. He began his career by launching an advertising agency in his teens and then working behind the scenes as a writer on “A Different World” and “Martin”. He wrote and produced “Roc Live”, the first prime time scripted American series since the late 1950s to broadcast each episode of an entire season live. Jones later combined his writing and acting talents when he was handpicked by Quincy Jones to join sketch comedy franchise, “MadTV”. Following his tenure on the show he partnered with 7Up to write, produce and star in a series of iconic television commercials that are still recognized among the Top 100 most successful advertising campaigns of all time.

Heralded as a creative innovator across multiple media platforms, Jones was recognized as WhoSay’s social media celebrity of 2014 and MTV’s “King of Fandom” in 2015. His passionate advocacy for the changing relationship between fans and creators has afforded him the opportunity to speak at various fan studies conferences and contribute to numerous academic publications.

In 2015, Jones co-founded the immersive content studio Legion of Creatives with former Disney executive Jay Williams and writer/producer Noam Dromi. The company is producing a wide range of multi-platform programs including the original series “High School 51”, created by Star Trek, Transformers, and Amazing Spiderman 2 writer/producer Roberto Orci.

In 2016, Jones was chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to host The Oscars Backstage for the 88th Academy Awards, an interactive second screen experience tied to the official broadcast of the event.

Later this year he'll be seen in the independent feature film The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea as well as the film Tainted Love, based on the graphic novel-style action comedy, which he also wrote and produced. It's a first of its kind digital feature that is the launching pad for a unique narrative journey across multiple platforms.

Demore Barnes (“12 Monkeys”) has also been added to the cast as Mr. Ibis, the keeper of stories, past and present, and he recounts them with great relish. His old fashioned sensibilities do not preclude a wry wit.

Barnes landed his first professional role right out of high school in his hometown of Toronto on “Squawk Box”, a sketch comedy show on YTV (Canada’s version of Nickelodeon) and has since been a rising star. He went on to star in the CBC kids show “Street Cents.” He spent the next three seasons on the show doing sketch comedy.

Barnes then crossed-over into the dramatic realm of performance within the television movies, “White Lies”, with Sarah Polley and Lynn Redgrave, “Second String” with Jon Voight, and “Black Out” with Jane Seymour. Shortly after, Barnes was cast as Benjamin Hardaway on the CTV legal drama, “The Associates”, and was thrust into the media maelstrom. For that role, Barnes was nominated two consecutive years for the Gemini Award as Best Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series. In addition, Barnes was the winner of the BFV and Black Film Award for Best Performance in a Dramatic Series for his work on The Associates.

Barnes then began working between both Los Angeles and Vancouver and was soon chosen by Academy Award nominee and preeminent playwright, David Mamet to portray super-secret military commando, Hector Williams in his CBS and 20th Century Fox series, “The Unit.” The series was also nominated two consecutive years for an NAACP Award for Outstanding Drama Series 2007 & 2008. Barnes went on to land a recurring role in the CW Network hit, “Supernatural” as the Archangel Raphael and also guest starred on Fox’s “Fringe” as Agent Hubert and Universal’s “Caprica” as Nigel Hightower. Barnes has also guest starred in the CBC hit series, “Being Erica” as University of Toronto professor and author, Michel Streith opposite Erin Karpluck.

Other credits include an appearance in the Darren Lynn Bouseman directed horror film, The Barrens with Stephen Moyer and Mia Kirshner filmed in Toronto as well as guest starring roles in the CTV and ION series, “Flashpoint”, HBO and Cinemax’s “Transporter” and more recently the NBC series “Hannibal”.

Barnes was chosen by Executive Producer and Academy Award winner Roger Avary to portray the recurring role of National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, Martin Reynolds in the Canal+ action series, “XIII”.

In the last two years Barnes has been juggling series regular and recurring roles on “Hemlock Grove” for Netflix, “Open Heart” for YTV and Nickelodeon as well as “12 Monkeys” for Syfy network. He had a 2 episode arc on “Defiance” for Syfy and a guest starring role on “The Flash” for the CW.

Barnes is represented by Don Buchwald & Associates, The Characters Talent agency, and Luber Roklin Entertainment.

Jones and Barnes join previously announced stars Ricky Whittle (Shadow Moon), Ian McShane (Mr. Wednesday), Emily Browning (Laura Moon), Pablo Schreiber (Mad Sweeney), Yetide Badaki (Bilquis), Bruce Langley (Technical Boy), Crispin Glover (Mr. World), Jonathan Tucker (Low Key Lyesmith), Gillian Anderson (Media), Peter Stormare (Czernobog), and Cloris Leachman (Zorya Vechernyaya).

American Gods has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

“American Gods” is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (“Hannibal,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) is directing the pilot and additional episodes. FMNA’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk are executive producing the series along with Fuller, Green, Slade and Neil Gaiman. Senior Vice Presidents of Original Programming Marta Fernandez and Ken Segna are the Starz executives in charge of “American Gods.” Starz retains all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia is distributing the series worldwide.

TV Review: Preacher "The Possibilities"

Series is still preaching to its choir.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

As a newcomer to the Preacher universe, I very much want to like this series. I like much of the acting, I like the behind-the-scenes talent, I like the visuals and the humor, and the world that it seems to be building seems like it has the potential for great things. Which is why it remains so terribly frustrating how scattershot and unfocused the series is thus far. Three episodes in, I don’t precisely know what to make of Preacher. I’m not even sure I could tell you with any real certainty what it’s about. It feels more and more like a series made by and for existing Preacher fans, with little patience for those of us on the outside who don’t already speak the language. The series keeps offering fragments that feel less like a slow build and more like teases for things with which we are already expected to be intimately familiar.

For instance, we get a peek this week of the criminal past once shared by Jesse and Tulip, as flashbacks reveal how they were once left holding the bag after a job by their treacherous former partner, Carlos. We are told that Carlos’ betrayal had devastating consequences for both Jesse and Tulip, such to the point that Tulip is absolutely driven by vengeance and Jesse even temporarily entertains putting his struggle for redemption on hold to find Carlos. But none of this really connects because we don’t even really yet have a sense of who these characters are in the present to be concerned with additional vague allusions to their past.

And Cassidy, whose humor is the only truly consistent pleasure of Preacher thus far, has little to do this week beyond odd jobs around the church. However, he does encounter, and re-murder, the two mysterious agents he bloodily murdered last week, whom we find out are heavenly enforcers dispatched to reclaim the entity residing within Jesse. The duo manage to form something of an alliance with Cassidy in their quest, but we don’t know what that entails just yet. We don’t know who these two really are just yet. Hell, we don’t even know what the force is yet. Preacher is displaying an aggravating tendency to avoid pinning down a single thing for us with which to anchor ourselves.

Its universe keeps sprawling as well. How does Sheriff Root and his son “Arseface” fit into the bigger picture? The abusive husband who Jesse assaulted awhile back still has it out for the preacher, but his greater significance is uncertain, save for tempting Jesse with committing retaliatory murder. Annville Mr. Big Quincannon is still flitting around the margins of the series, but who knows why? Even Lucy Griffiths’ Emily, the fourth lead on the show, is a complete nonentity thus far. I can understand why the two immortal enforcers remain murky at the moment, but shouldn’t some of these other people be snapping into focus now? Even Jesse himself is an enigma. His powers of vocal persuasion are fun (his use of them to make Cassidy his dancing monkey is a hoot, though Jesse getting the vampire to admit to being a Belieber coupled with last week’s admission that he’s not a Lebowski fan doesn’t speak well of Cassidy’s taste in pop culture), but nothing about his character seems to be taking root.

I don’t know, maybe it’s premature to hold this lack of momentum and cohesion against Preacher at such an early date. If it had been released as one big bulk-drop on Netflix, the stinginess of explanation and momentum would probably be more forgivable in a binge session as opposed to week-to-week. But watching the show feels like being at a party where you don’t know anyone and no one is introducing you to people. I would very much like to count myself among Preacher’s fans, but it’s starting to feel like they aren’t accepting latecomers.
