Fringe Renewed For A Third Season

Fringe Renewed For A Third Season

Though the show isn't exactly blowing the roof off of Nielsen—it's been averaging just 7.6 million viewers and is ranked No. 50 in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic this season—it managed to survive in a tough new time period on Thursdays. The show returns with new episodes—and the promise of more visits from Leonard Nimoy and to the parallel universe—on April 1.

That means we'll get more of the delicious weirdness, more loony awesome John Noble as Walter Bishop, more sexy Joshua Jackson-Anna Torv tension, more mercury-blooded alt-dimension assassins, more Nimoy, more Blair Brown-Lance Reddick action, hopefully more Kirk Acevedo, and lots more 'splodey heads. (And, yes, how could we forget: More of the button-cute, spunky Jasika Nicole as Astrid!)

Rachel Nichols Snags Female Role In Conan Film

Rachel Nichols Snags Female Role In Conan Film

Rachel Nichols may not be a house hold name but I am sure you rememebr her from Star Trek as an Orion cadet at Starfleet Academy(green alien girl)that was with Kirk and her role in G.I. Joe playing Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara.

Now she will be staring in the upcoming film Conan. According to Latino Review Nichols has signed on to play Tamara in Conan the Barbarian, a martial arts master who serves as the Queen's bodyguard in Conan's world.

Tamara is 18 to 24 years old, Caucasian or Middle Eastern, open to all ethnicities; beautiful, studious, correct, a novitiate of a Greek influenced monastery. A master of martial arts, she has been trained to be the Queen’s servant, bodyguard and best friend. She and many other female bodyguards to the queen have been in hiding most of their lives because of the curse of Acheron, which would take the queen’s life to bring almost immortal power to its king. When Khalar Singh, a powerful warlord with ambitions to become the king of Acheron, storms the monastery and captures all of the novitiates, she is separated from Ilira, the one she must protect. With all of her strength and will, Tamara is determined to find and rescue her. She finds herself in league with Conan because of a mutual need to find Khalar Singh. She is not in the least intimidated by Conan’s size or grim demeanor and their alliance eventually blossoms into something that surprises them both…

The Green Lantern And Zach Snyder's "Sucker Punch." To Be In 3D

The Green Lantern And Zach Snyder's "Sucker Punch." To Be In 3D

Warner Bros. is adding two more projects to its growing portfolio of 3D films -- "The Green Lantern" and Zach Snyder's "Sucker Punch."

"Green Lantern," starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Martin Campbell, is heading into production in Louisiana with a June, 17, 2011, release date. "Sucker Punch," starring Emily Browning as a teen confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, has completed principal photography and is set for a March 25, 2011, launch.

Warners is in the process of converting "Clash of the Titans" and the first part of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" to stereoscopic 3D (S3D). Studio decided last month to convert "Titans" and moved the launch back a week to April 2, kicking off a flurry of release-date shifts.

Studio did not announce the conversion vendor for "Sucker Punch" or whether "Green Lantern" will be converted, shot in 3D or a combination of both.

"Police Academy" Reboot Coming Your Way

"Police Academy" Reboot Coming Your Way

New Line is looking for recruits for a relaunched "Police Academy" movie. Original producer Paul Maslansky is back for the new iteration, which has no writer or director attached.

"Academy" was a seven-film lowbrow comedy series from Warner Bros. that saw a city throw open the doors of its police force to any recruit, much to the chagrin of its serious officers. The misfit officers band together and, of course, save the city.

The first film, released in 1984, starred Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney, a repeat offender who is forced to enter the academy and emerges as the group's leader. Other notable characters included Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), gun-crazy Tackleberry (David Graf), mousy Hooks (Marion Ramsey) and sound effects-spewing Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow).

Bobcat Goldthwait joined the cast for the second movie in 1985. The series, which included Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone as romantic leads, ended with the 1994's "Mission to Moscow." All told, the franchise took in about $240 million worldwide and inspired a pair of TV series.

"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky said. "It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."

The early entries in the series featured sexual humor, but later films became more kid-friendly. Details of the tone of new movie, which would take the story to its beginnings with new characters, were unavailable.

This time around, corporate parent Warner Bros. has sister company New Line taking the title out of its library, as it recently did with the "National Lampoon's Vacation" series.

Ridley Scott's Alien Prequel To Be In 3D

Ridley Scott's Alien Prequel To Be In 3D

Put the rumors to rest as to whether H.R. Giger's metamorph will be truly leaping out of your screen in Ridley Scott's pending Alien prequel:

"Ridley's doing the next Alien in 3D." Christian told me.

When I asked the director if he thought the new prequel could set the Alien franchise straight again, he responded:

"I do. Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there's ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I'm hoping he'll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it - everybody. "

Christian, who created the 'cannibalisation' technique of using stripped-out WWII bombers to dress SF movie classics Star Wars and Alien, is quite firm about the Alien prequel being in 3D, but less committed about it constituting the start of a new Alien trilogy. But it doesn't seem reasonable to presume that the 'trilogy' comment is completely random. So that's one rumour confirmed, but another springing up in its place, I guess.

Asked if he would have any involvement in Scott's new Alien movie, Christian responded:

"I hope so. I actually met Ridley here at the film festival. We had a chat to catch up, and he was going on about how much I'd 'got it' on the first one. I guess that's because of Star Wars, where I had a trained crew with me...and we learnt how to do it. It's not a technique that's easy to do - it's something I'd learnt. So [Scott] kept saying how I was the one responsible, really."

Christian moved on to directing in 1979 with the seminal medieval short film Black Angel, which was funded by George Lucas, toured the world as a short feature with The Empire Strikes Back and influenced a decade's worth of middle-ages epics including Excalibur (it was screened for John Boorman's crew as a blueprint before shooting began), Ridley Scott's Legend, Disney's Dragonslayer, the UK Robin Of Sherwood TV series and countless other armoured epics ever since. Despite winning an Oscar for his 1982 thriller The Sender and worldwide plaudits for Nostradamus (1994), Christian is best-remembered over the last decade as the director of the movie adaptation of scientology-founder L. Ron Hubbard's Battlefield Earth (2000). More from the man himself on that subject soon in the interview...

In the meantime Christian still has a slate of projects to contend with, but would consider stepping back into his old production designer role for one reason only - and one man only:

"I always made only one promise to myself. I said if ever I went back to designing, the only film I would ever want to design is Alien, if Ridley re-did it. I could never understand why they didn't pull him back in". Pressed as to whether he'll be on board the Alien franchise again, Christian laughed: "I don't know! We'll see. I would do it if it came up, depending on what I was doing at the time."

Disney To Air Tron And The Avengers Animated Series

Disney To Air Tron And The Avengers Animated Series

Disney Channel is developing a "Tron" animated series to follow the upcoming theatrical release of "Tron: Legacy."

The news was part of Disney's upfront presentation Tuesday evening to media buyers and clients, which included a preview of the "Tron" series. Geared towards kids age 6-14, the plan is to precede "Tron" with another project, a 10-part "Tron" micro-series premiering in fall 2011 on Disney XD.

Gary Marsh, entertainment president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, also offered a glimpse of "Legacy," which is at such an early juncture in the development process that only stills were available.

"Tron is another example of how we can take advantage of the intellectual property that the studio unit pays tens, if not hundreds, of millions to develop and market," said Marsh.

The "Tron" projects represent a CGI-refresh of Disney's 1982 theatrical, with "Legacy" expected to be released in December.

This fall, Disney XD will also unveil a new animated series that looks to build on Disney's $4 billion acquisition of Marvel Entertainment -- "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes," which is based on a clutch of iconic Marvel superheroes that includes Iron Man, Wolverine, Thor and the Incredible Hulk. The strip will set the table for a pair of Avengers-themed theatricals that are slated to hit multiplexes in summer 2011.

"We've been pouring through the library of 7,000 Marvel characters looking for the next 'Spider-Man,'" Marsh said, adding that fans of the Marvel Universe should expect to see more cooperative ventures in the near future.

Guy Ritchie To Direct Excalibur

Guy Ritchie To Direct Excalibur

After reading this let me know if you got confused or not. Well I was confused until I looked at it again.

So, get this: Warner Brothers also put a competing production into development. But this one is not a remake of the Boorman film, it’s a big-screen adaptation of Warren Ellis’ Excalibur treatment . Now, the fact that Warren Ellis is working on a Excalibur movie isn’t new — he announced it on his own blog last July. (Coincidentally, Ellis also had a run as a writer of Marvel’s Excalibur — a series that featured Captain Britain and a number of former X-Men members — early in his career).

The news here, actually, is who is angling to direct this version of Excalibur: Some dude named Guy Ritchie. Yes. Ole Lock Stock and Two Holmes. Ritchie’s version is set up at the Hollywood Gang production studio (while Singer’s version is set up at Legendary). Moreover, the take is different. While Singer’s version is closer to a remake of the Boorman film, Ritchie’s possible take is more in the tone of Star Wars, and, as Ellis noted last year, his version “differs from the prior 751 King Arthur movies in many ways, but perhaps most obviously in that it is very specifically about the gathering of the Knights.”

But yes: There are two Excalibur movies in development, and both are set up at Warners, and both are in the script stage. My guess is that Ritchie’s actually has the edge — Ellis has wrapped his treatment, it seems, while there’s no writer yet for Singer’s version. Moreover, Ritchie’s plate isn’t as full — he’s got the Sherlock Holmes sequel, and The Gamekeeper, but we also know that the Brothers Warner is taking another pass on Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cromwell’s Gamekeeper script. So, it’s not ready, either (there’s no hurry on either project; one or both could be finished by the time Holmes 2 is done, which is when Ritchie will likely make the decision on his next project).

Zack Snyder's Legend of The Guardians Trailer And Images

Zack Snyder's Legend of The Guardians Trailer And Images

Warner Bros. has released a fantastic looking new trailer for the Zack Snyder directed CGI animated film Legend of The Guardians, based on the book the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, which was the previous title of the movie.

Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham will topline the voice cast of Animal Logic's 3D animated feature, "Legend of The Guardians," distributor Roadshow Films said.

The big-budget fantasy film, in production in Sydney and directed by Zack Snyder, also will feature the voices of Aussie actors Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten and Jay Laga'aia, as well as English actors Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren and Jim Sturgess.

The film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father's epic stories of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.

Deborra-Lee Furness plays Barran, the queen of the great tree, a source of knowledge for the noble owls of Ga'Hoole. "She's powerful, but a diplomat as well," says Legend of the Guardians director Zack Snyder. Snyder says he chose Furness as much for her energy as her voice. "One of the things I looked for in casting voices was enthusiasm, and she had plenty of it."

Tim Burton To Direct Lincoln Vampire Slayer Film

Tim Burton To Direct Lincoln Vampire Slayer Film

We have learned that directors Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov have found another angle on the Lincoln story: Abe's lifelong mission to kill vampires. They'll produce with Jim Lemley a movie adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the Seth Grahame-Smith novel that Grand Central Publishing released today.

Graham-Smith kicks off with the revelation that Lincoln’s mother was killed by a supernatural creature, which fueled his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers. The novel depicts the 16th U.S. president as an axe-throwing, highly trained vampire killer. The author is making a career of marrying classic tales with a genre bent, and this becomes his second film deal after Lionsgate and Natalie Portman signed on to adapt Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which infuses a familiar Jane Austen tale with an attack of bloodthirsty zombies. David O. Russell is circling that project as director and Portman is producing and playing the feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet.

Wolverine 2 Script Is Done And Ready To Head To Japan

Wolverine 2 Script Is Done And Ready To Head To Japan

I actually didn't hate the first film as much as a lot of fans of Wolverine. I mean of course there were holes in the movie that didn't follow the comic book but overall a descent movie in my opinion.

And looks like the script for the second film is done and ready to go. At this time no director has been signed to the film. I am sure they will not have a problem finding someone.

The script was based on Frank Miller and Chris Claremont Story cycle of the Wolverine story when he heads to my motherland looking for adventures in martial arts will be a love story featuring a Japanese actress, I am told.
“It’s a beautiful story,” says a source, “and will be very different than the first film.”

The script was written by Christopher McQuarrie of “X-Men” and “Valkyrie” fame.

Space Invaders Making It's Way To The Big Screen

Space Invaders Making It's Way To The Big Screen

I guess this really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone with Missile Command set up at Fox and Asteroids at Universal. So it look like Warner Bros. wants to get their hand on the classic game Space Invaders.

It looks like this film will becoming reality very soon, Warner Bros. is in negotiation to acquireTaito, the Japanese company that man the game. Once all those issues are taken care look like they are going to bring in some Hollywood heave weights.Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady as producers.

Space Invaders was of course the iconic game that helped start it all, a Japanese-created arcade title from 1978 that featured roving attacking ships raining vertical fire on the player's craft, which dodged and fired back. It later vaulted to prominence via the Atari 2600.

There's a bit of a loop-closing thing happening, since the game itself was inspired (loosely) by sci-fi movies like "Star Wars." Still, like most games of the era, Space Invaders features little back story, which is why it's anyone's guess what shape a movie might take.

No More Musical Numbers For Disney Animation?

No More Musical Numbers For Disney Animation?

How can that be? Just because a movie breaks even at the box office does that mean let's have no more musical acts in any Disney animation films? Let's hope this isn't true. Oh and another thing people do not turn this into a racial issue. Cause I am sure someone has already brought that up.

Think of Jiminy Cricket warbling “When You Wish Upon A Star.” Or Angela Lansbury and her friends toasting “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast.”

Well, those days may be a thing of the past. I am told that Disney Animation has put the kibosh on Alan Menken’s planned “The Snow Queen,” from the directors of “Tarzan.”

The reason? “The Princess and the Frog” was a disappointment, insiders say. Even though it was nominated for an Oscar and got pretty good reviews, “P & F” is considered a bust in Toon Town.

According to sources, several things hurt the movie. Not the least of which was the word “Princess” in the title. “It scared off the little boys. Only girls wanted to see it,” says an observer. Without boys, “P & F” was more “Little Mermaid” than “Aladdin.” Even the Randy Newman score wasn’t enough to entice fans of movies like “Transformers” or even “Cars.” (What happened, I often ask, to the Randy Newman who wrote “Sail Away” and “Baltimore”? Remember “Nilsson Sings Newman”?)

With “P & F” taking in just over $100 million domestically, and just about breaking even, Disney animation insiders have more or less decreed ‘no more musicals’ for the foreseeable future. “Snow Queen” isn’t the only animated film to get scratched, but it’s the most visible project since it was more or less announced last fall.

Adding to the Disney drama will be the release — we hope — of “Waking Sleeping Beauty.” A documentary about Disney’s glorious run of animated hits from 1984-1999, and how Pixar changed the drawing game, was shown at film festivals last fall. Screenings begin March 15 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. If “Snow Queen” is really dead, “WSB” will seem all the more poignant.

Justin Timberlake Going Back To School In "Bad Teacher"

Justin Timberlake Going Back To School In "Bad Teacher"

Justin Timberlake has nabbed the coveted role of the male lead in "Bad Teacher," the Cameron Diaz comedy Jake Kasdan is directing for Columbia.

Molly Shannon and Eric Stonestreet ("Modern Family") are also joining the cast.

The script, by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, follows a foul-mouthed, gold-digging seventh-grade teacher who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, sets her sights on a colleague (Lucy Punch) who is dating a substitute teacher, who also is the scion of a watch fortune.

Jason Segel was cast in the supporting role of a gym teacher, with John Michael Higgins slotted as the principal, but the studio has spent the better part of the new year looking though class photos trying to find its leading man.

John Krasinski, Joel McHale, Timothy Olyphant, Guy Pearce, Adam Scott and relative newcomer Cheyenne Jackson were in the mix for table reads and other tests.

Jimmy Miller is producing the feature, which starts filming this month in Los Angeles.

Timberlake seems to be making a concerted push into larger movie roles. After spending time in supporting parts in such movies as "Alpha Dog" and "The Love Guru," this new role comes on the heels of him wrapping up a co-starring role in Columbia's "The Social Network."

James Cameron's Hiroshima Flick Is Not Going To Happen

James Cameron's Hiroshima Flick Is Not Going To Happen

Publication has been halted for a disputed book about the atomic bombing of Japan that "Avatar" director James Cameron had optioned for a possible film.

Publisher Henry Holt and Company, responding to questions from the AP, said Monday that author Charles Pellegrino "was not able to answer" concerns about "The Last Train from Hiroshima," including whether two men mentioned in the book actually existed.

"It is with deep regret that Henry Holt and Company announces that we will not print, correct or ship copies of Charles Pellegrino's `The Last Train from Hiroshima,'" the publisher said in a statement issued to the AP.

Doubts were first raised about the book a week ago after Pellegrino acknowledged that one of his interview subjects had falsely claimed to be on one of the planes accompanying the Enola Gay, from which an atom bomb was dropped by the United States on Hiroshima in 1945. Holt had initially promised to send a corrected edition.

But further doubts about the book emerged. The publisher was unable to determine the existence of a Father Mattias (the first name is not given) who supposedly lived in Hiroshima at the time of the bombing, and John MacQuitty, identified as a Jesuit scholar presiding over Mattias' funeral.

Pellegrino's own background was also questioned. He sometimes refers to himself as Dr. Pellegrino, and his Web site lists him as receiving a Ph.D. in 1982 from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. But in response to a query from the AP, the school said it had no proof that Pellegrino had such a degree.

"It is easy to understand how even the most diligent author could be duped by a source, but we also understand that opens that book to very detailed scrutiny," according to the statement from Holt.

"The author of any work of nonfiction must stand behind its content. We must rely on our authors to answer questions that may arise as to the accuracy of their work and reliability of their sources. Unfortunately, Mr. Pellegrino was not able to answer the additional questions that have arisen about his book to our satisfaction."

E-mail to Pellegrino was not immediately answered.

Holt publicist Nicole Dewey said 18,000 copies of the book, published in January, were in print. The publisher "will issue full credit to wholesalers and retailers who wish to return the book. Consumers who seek a refund should return to the retailer from whom they purchased the book," Monday's statement said.

The book's fate not only means the likely demise of the film deal with Cameron, who provided a blurb for "Last Train," but complicates the long history of collaboration between the director and Pellegrino, who served as an adviser for "Avatar," the box-office champ that has been nominated for nine Academy Awards.

Cameron wrote introductions for Pellegrino's "Ghosts of the Titanic," published in 2000, and for the controversial 2007 release "The Jesus Family Tomb," co-authored by Pellegrino and strongly questioned by scholars for its assertion that a tomb discovered in Jerusalem contained the remains of Jesus and possible family members.

"The Last Train from Hiroshima" had received strong reviews, including a rave from The New York Times' Dwight Garner, who called it a "sober and authoritative new book" and a "gleaming, popular wartime history." Pellegrino first acknowledged flaws in the book when he told the Times last month that he had been misled by Joseph Fuoco, who had claimed he was a last-minute replacement for flight engineer James R. Corliss.

Zoolander 2 Is In The Works According To Ben Stiller

Zoolander 2 Is In The Works According To Ben Stiller

I enjoyed Zoolander when it came out for what it was. And I bet you all have wondered whatever happened to Derek and Hansel, looks like we are going to find out soon.

"Yes, it is true," "We're in the process of getting a script written, so it's in the early stages. But yeah, it's going to happen."

According to Stiller, "Zoolander 2" will focus on how the fashion industry has changed in the 10 years since moviegoers last saw Derek.

"In the fashion world, if you go away for a year, it's changed — it just happens so quickly," he said. "I think the idea in the beginning of the movie is that it's 10 years later, and Derek and Hansel [Owen Wilson's character] are literally forgotten. Nobody remembers who they are, so they have to reinvent themselves."

In addition to Wilson's character, Stiller said he's hoping for the return of Mugatu, the original film's villain played by Will Ferrell.

"If Will says yes, he definitely has to be part of it," said the comedian. "To me, Mugatu is one of the classic screen villains of all time."

The "Zoolander 2" breakthrough owes thanks not just to Stiller and "Tropic Thunder" writer Justin Theroux, who is possibly directing the developing sequel, but also to other collaborators including original "Zoolander" writer John Hamburg and "Get Him to the Greek" director Nick Stoller.

Johnny Depp Wants To Make Cameo In The Upcoming 21 Jump Street Film

Looks like Tom Hanson might be making a return to the upcoming movie 21 Jump Street.

In an interview for this week’s EW cover story, Johnny Depp–who became a reluctant 1980s teen idol thanks to his role as undercover officer Tom Hanson on the cop show 21 Jump Street–said he is interested in the idea of possibly making a cameo appearance in the planned Jump Street movie. “I’m hoping they’ll let me do a cameo,” Depp said with a laugh. “Someone will say, ‘Whatever happened to Tom Hanson?’ and they’ll find me somewhere hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in my underpants.” The Jump Street movie is in development at Sony Pictures, with Jonah Hill on board to write, executive produce, and potentially star.
