SILENT HOUSE Movie Review By: RAMA

 SILENT HOUSE Movie Review
By: RAMA

Did SILENT HOUSE make RAMA jump out  of his seat? Make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

Single shot real time take is what this horror/thriller brags about, but sshhh.. if you stay silent, just like the title, you may notice that the big reveal at the end isn’t as unpredictable as it wants you to think it. By the way, make sure you watch your step because you’ll get to walk all over the house from room to room, with Elizabeth Olsen. I know.. lamest tour of the house ever!

SILENT HOUSE has the potential to become an instant classic but the film unfortunately is not quite as strong and convincing as Olsen’s performance..

SILENT HOUSE is a uniquely unsettling horror thriller starring Elizabeth Olsen as Sarah, a young woman who finds herself sealed inside her family’s secluded lake house. With no contact to the outside world, and no way out, panic turns to terror as events become increasingly ominous in and around the house. Directed by filmmaking duo Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, SILENT HOUSE uses meticulous camera choreography to take the audience on a tension-filled, real time journey, experienced in a single uninterrupted shot.

Director Chris Kentis and co-producer Laura Lau previously brought us Open Water. Remember that one? A scary survival story of scuba divers stranded out in shark-infested sea. Many audiences found it boring and annoying, I was one of those who thought it rocked, it put a cool spin on the whole type of setting a story in just one location the entire film.

The marketing of SILENT HOUSE makes the film look like it’s your typical haunted house thriller, but there’s more to the picture than meets the eye.

I’m still iffy about this whole unbroken continuous shot, they make it sound like it’s groundbreaking and the greatest thing ever, but I attended the press day and both Kentis and Lau told us press members that it wasn’t exactly done like that, at least not how the audiences perceive it. But let’s put that aside shall we, SILENT HOUSE’s biggest weakness is that it doesn’t give enough set up.

You have a girl named Sara, her dad, they just moved into this house and her uncle’s helping her out with the process and the rest of the film is just Sara (Elizabeth Olsen) screaming and crying and screaming some more as she frantically runs and desperately tries to find her way in that dark ghastly house, from one room to another, that’s basically it. You start figuring things out halfway through, the film is like a poker player who doesn’t realize that his cards are exposed.

I’m not going to spoil you the twist but just know that the movie does have its frightening moments, just know that Olsen does a great job, I think that girl is a force to be reckoned with, just know that the movie does make you feel like something unthinkable is just waiting around the corner, that a big reveal is going to be shocking beyond belief, but instead, what you get is something that reminds you of Nicole Kidman’s The Others or movies like it that would have you wonder which one is the victim and which one is the perp.
To be frank, I’d rather have SILENT HOUSE be about haunted house as opposed to the alternative.

Lucid Coming To The Big Screen

Just a few days after picking up the whimsical dinosaur-next-door title Bolivar, Warner Bros. have made a second deal with comics publisher Archaia. This time it's for Lucid, and it'll once again be developed and produced by Akiva Goldsman.

Lucid's set-up is in a slightly skewed version of our own world, where magic exists, and governments employ "combat mages" as spies to ward off international supernatural threats. Our hero is a rookie "Protector of the Realm", taking on a dealer in black market occult technology. Variety describe Lucid as Harry Potter, if Harry Potter grew up and joined the CIA. The comic is by Michael McMillian (who plays Steve in True Blood) and Anna Wieszczyk.

That Potter comparison goes some way to explaining Warners' interest in the comic, since there's a large Hogwarts-shaped hole in their production slate these days. All eyes are on a potential franchise.

No screewriter is attached yet, but added to the Warner/Archaia mix is Zachary Quinto's Before The Door banner, which developed the comic in the first place, and will oversee the film.

JOHN CARTER Movie Review By: RAMA

JOHN CARTER Movie Review
By: RAMA

What did RAMA this of film based on is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

From technical perspective or the VFX, there’s nothing necessarily catastrophic about JOHN CARTER, it’s the technology caught up to the story type situation but I’m just not that impressed, the marketing brags about the fact that STAR WARS and AVATAR took their inspiration from this Edgar Rice Burrough’s martian series, be that as it may, Star Wars and Avatar hit our theaters first and so there’s hardly much left for JOHN CARTER to use and blow our minds with…

From Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

I’ve never read the books, but I understand that Stanton had to alter some of the original material and took in elements from Burrough’s other books in the same series and compiled them into this one origin story but the result is a film that doesn’t engage you, frequent lackluster battle scenes, and even the romance seems forced.
I think Taylor Kitsch is not a charismatic leading man and Hollywood’s wanting him to be the new lead star when he’s clearly not ready for the role, is just sad.

I suppose it being the first live action movie by Finding Nemo and Wall-E director, Andrew Stanton could give him some excuse pass, after all you don’t always get it right the first time, right?! But if this is the start of a potential trilogy, if this is the quality and style of storytelling they’re going to keep for this franchise, then I’d hate to see what the 2nd and 3rd film would have to offer.

I’m not even kidding, the last 10 minutes of the movie was way more exciting than the 2 hours prior, because in the end, you’re treated with some mystery, piecing the clues, and hints of impending heartfelt reunion, if only the rest of the film could grab my attention that same way.

Stanton came from Pixar family and what I’ve always loved about Pixar films is that even if their films have environmental message or some other undertone that’s not always obvious from the looks and feel of the movie, they always managed to convey it in a way that’s not redundant, Stanton himself said that Pixar is emotionally driven, so I don’t understand why he couldn’t inject that same quality into JOHN CARTER because instead, the film kept preaching to us about taking up a cause, Lynn Collins’ character Dejah Thoris is pretty much the one sounding it like a broken record. I think audiences should collect penny for every time she verbally and loudly invites John Carter to join their fight, maybe then the economy can finally be stimulated.

I went to the screening where beforehand they gave us a pamphlet of information about the characters and their relation to one another. It helped to a certain point but I can only imagine the challenges that audiences would experience in theaters that don’t provide such accommodation, so to speak.
I enjoy the comedy built around the nickname Virginia and Carter’s superjump thanks to low gravity, the arena scene with the giant white apes suggests signs of epic, but after seeing the animated arena in How To Train Your Dragon, everything else seems unable to reach that same bar.

Apparently the villain Matai Shang is also some kind of shapeshifter, he can present himself in a different form, which is one of my favorite superpowers.

Perhaps for the sequel, what Stanton or whichever director that Disney’s going to hire, should do is don’t waste time reintroducing the already established characters and the previous plot and just go straight for the win, just jump in both feet with a continuation and just run with it and never look back, so we the audiences won’t have be bored out of our minds listening to explanations and long winded dialogue by two lead actors that are sight for sore eyes, but that’s about it.
Mars should’ve stayed airless.

We Have Your Access To See SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN In Sacramento

We have your access to see Salmon Fishing In The Yemen. CBS Films has provide me with Exclusive passes for the fans to get access to the screening in Sacramento,Ca. Please Bring your ID's to the screening

SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN is an extraordinary, beguiling tale of fly-fishing andpolitical spinning, of unexpected heroism and late-blooming love and of an attempt to prove the impossible, possible. Ewan McGregor (Beginners) and Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau) star in the feature film alongside Oscar©-nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (I’ve Loved You So Long). Lasse Hallström’s charming and witty adaptation of Paul Torday’s bestselling novel stars Ewan McGregor as Fred Jones, a fisheries expert and academic who works for the British government. When he’s approached by Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt) with a plan to introduce salmon into the waterways of Yemen for the purpose of sport fishing, he laughs off the scheme, claiming it impossible. Harriet acts as the British representative of an amiable and benevolent sheikh (Amr Waked), who fulfills his love of fishing on frequent trips to his estate in the ruggedly gorgeous Scottish highlands. The sheik believes that fishing creates a spiritual connection between humans and nature, and feels that bringing the sport to his country would benefit the people.

While Fred ponders the idea, the proposal catches the ear of the British prime minister’s spokesperson, Bridget Maxwell (Kristin Scott Thomas). Desperate to detract attention from some unwanted publicity, Bridget sees Harriet’s idea as the perfect opportunity to promote what will appear to be a heart felt story ofBritish goodwill in the Middle East. Despite Fred’s protests, he soon finds himself working on a project that seems not only frivolous but absolutely unfeasible in the arid land of Yemen. His skepticism is matched only by thesheikh’s boundless optimism. As the mission begins to succeed, Fred grows closer to Harriet. Despite the many obstacles that stand in the way of their romance, their relationship affords an unexpected and welcome sense of hope for two lonely individuals.

The screening will take place on March 26, 2012 at 7:30PM at a Sacramento Area Theater.
