"The American" Tops The Holiday Weekend Box Office Exit popcorn-pic season, hello movies for grown-ups: Focus Features' George Clooney starrer " The American " topped the domestic box office with an estimated $16.4 million during the summer-ending Labor Day weekend. The assassin-themed thriller rang up $19.5 million in its first six days, after unspooling midweek to get a jump on the four-day frame. Two other wide openers bore the same R rating as "American" but seemed more restricted in audience appeal. Fox's crime actioner " Machete " topped daily rankings with $3.9 million in its first day of release on Friday, but the Robert Rodriguez-shepherded splatterfest quickly ceded its lead to the more broadly appealing Clooney pic and fetched $14 million in second place through Monday. Takers Give A The Last Exorcism Sony's crime thriller " Takers " has overtaken Lionsgate's horror pic " The Last Exorcism " for box office bragging rights from the past weekend. Final official data released Monday show " Takers " took in $20.5 million, compared with $20.4 million conjured by " Exorcism ." That gave the competing wide openers the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, respectively, among all films playing in domestic cinemas during the weekend. The rankings were reversed from Sunday, when initial studio estimates showed "Exorcism" with $21.3 million and "Takers" posted a preliminary $21 million. "Takers" staked its weekend win largely on business from urban constituencies. "Exorcism" support skewed 54% to Latino moviegoers, keying on genre and thematic appeal. Shutter Island Pushed back until 2010 Moviegoers won't be going to " Shutter Island " this fall, as Paramount has moved the Martin Scorsese-directed thriller, starring Leonardo DiCaprio , from Oct. 2 to Feb. 19. Citing economic factors, Paramount made the decision Friday morning, only six weeks before the pic would have opened. Fox Searchlight immediately moved " Whip It," its Drew Barrymore -helmed roller derby comedy, forward a week into the slot. The only other pics set for wide release Oct. 2 are Disney's 3D re-releases of " Toy Story " and " Toy Story 2 ." The Feb. 19 slot currently contains a pair of actioners: Lionsgate's " From Paris With Love " and Screen Gems' " Takers ."
