Movie Review: #TheWildLife

The harmless The Wild Life is also exceeding boring.

Review by Matt Cummings

The French-Belgium animated feature The Wild Life is anything but that, a slow, often boring affair that both lacks a strong antagonist and is bereft of heroes with personalities above the temperature of oatmeal.

Essentially a version of Robinson Crusoe with talking animals, Life introduces us to the chatty parrot Tuesday and his posse of anthropomorphic animal friends who live on an isolated island. But when a violent storm wrecks the island, Tuesday and his friends awake to discover that a ship has crashed on the beach. When it's revealed that the only surviving passenger is none other than Robinson Crusoe, Tuesday is torn between siding with his friends' racial phobia about humans and his desire to seek adventure far off the island. Aligning himself with the fumbling Crusoe, the team soon realizes that pride of hungry and violent cats has also survived and want to take control of the island. As the two sides battle, Crusoe learns the meaning of courage and friendship while his new friends realize that humans aren't so bad after all.

The Wild Life is perhaps the most uninspiring animated film since Norm of the North, a misshapen and oddball affair that never hits its emotional stride and certainly keeps its characters as bland as possible. Everyone here is a caricature, never elevating themselves beyond the typical movie tropes, with the good guys always good and the bad ones remaining bad (and downright ugly, which will assuredly scare the little ones). Vocal performances are decent, but without top-tier talent to drive interest, we also get a lack of depth to their voices. It's a lot like what's happened at DC Animated, with each film declining in quality due entirely to the poor voice acting.

If The Wild Life does offer something, it's the impressive animation. I'm not sure that's going to be enough to attract audiences, because so much of this film is such a bore. There's never a sense of danger, with our heroes navigating a 15-minute onslaught by the evil cats and their babies (even though they're all stranded on a island filled with nothing but bugs) but never feeling like it meant anything. Crusoe will still be stranded, the cats will still be there, and Tuesday will continue to dream of a world he'll never see. By the time we get to the end, the island has luckily returned to normal, as our cats are now on a pirate ship and two gentle mice have been transported to the island courtesy of Tuesday. It's a definite social commentary that might even remind some of presidential candidate Donald Trump's wall-building scheme. Whether the connection is real or not, the movie isn't worth your time to debate.

The Wild Life proves that stellar animation still needs a great script and emotive voices to become a hit. All this one can do is boast that it's perfect Saturday cable escape but t's nowhere near ready for the big screen. We can say that about so many movies from this summer - just throw anyone onto the pile.

The Wild Life is rated PG for mild action/peril and some rude humor and has a runtime of 90 minutes.

THE #FREEFIRE TRAILER & POSTER HAS ARRIVED

It's all guns, no control in the electrifying first trailer for Ben Wheatley's FREE FIRE. The wickedly fun thriller had its world premiere last night as the opening night film of TIFF Midnight Madness.

The film stars Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Jack Reynor.

Bold, breathless and wickedly fun, Free Fire is an electrifying comedy-thriller about an arms deal that goes spectacularly and explosively wrong. Acclaimed filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High Rise) propels the audience head-on into quite possibly the most epic shootout ever seen on film as he crafts a spectacular parody –– and biting critique –– of the insanity of gun violence. Everyone’s got a gun, and absolutely no one is in control.

Set in a colorful yet gritty 1970s Boston, Free Fire opens with Justine (Oscar® winner Brie Larson), a mysterious American businesswoman, and her wise-cracking associate Ord (Armie Hammer) arranging a black-market weapons deal in a deserted warehouse between IRA arms buyer Chris (Cillian Murphy) and shifty South African gun runner Vernon (Sharlto Copley). What starts as a polite if uneasy exchange soon goes south when tensions escalate and shots are fired, quickly leading to a full-on Battle Royale where it’s every man (and woman) for themselves. COMING 2017.

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN Clip "Lunch Break"

STX Entertainment's THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN, featuring a very funny (and slightly NSFW) scene between Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson's characters.

THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN is a new coming-of-age movie in the vein of Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club - an honest, candid, often hilarious look at what it's like to grow up as a young woman in today's modern world.

Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.

The film also stars Kyra Sedgwick as Nadine's well-meaning but completely ineffective mother, and Woody Harrelson as Nadine's History teacher, mentor and reluctant sounding board. The Edge of Seventeen is produced by Academy Award winner James L. Brooks - the filmmaker behind big-screen, character-driven classics such as Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, Big, Say Anything, The Simpsons, Jerry Maguire and As Good as It Gets.

Movie Review: #Sully

Sully is a competent but unrewarding disaster film.

Review by Matt Cummings

If the worst Summer movie season in recent memory has you hungry for more competent fare, Sully might be the perfect meal. But don't expect to be blown away or even moved by its rather pedestrian, paint-by-the-numbers old school blandness. It's competent and likeable, but fails to stir anyone's appreciation for a heroic feat that doesn't really need a movie to tell it.

For 40-year flight veteran Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger (Tom Hanks), piloting has been in his blood since he was a teen. An air combat veteran, he's settled down into the unremarkable world of commercial passenger planes, shuttling passengers for US Airways. But when his flight loses both engines after multiple bird strikes, he's forced to land in the Hudson River. The rescue becomes a worldwide sensation and makes Sully a national hero, but members of the National Traffic Safety Board aren't exactly sold. They claim that Sully had made a critical error in judgement and that he could have landed back at LaGuardia. His co-pilot Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) believes otherwise, and thus a line is drawn in the water between the crew and uptight government types. Overwhelmed by the media attention, Sully also struggles with vivid nightmare scenarios while his wife (Laura Linney) is stuck at their home behind a wall of television camera trucks. With his reputation on the line and pressure building to admit wrongdoing, Sully must brave an NTSB inquiry that seems ready to persecute him and thus destroy his remarkable accomplishment.

Anyone going in to Sully expecting to be rewarded with another powerful history lesson ala American Sniper or even Bridge of Spies should look elsewhere. First, it's only 95 minutes, which might be Hanks' shortest film in 20 years. That brisk runtime doesn't give us enough time to play out the various sub stories that are not really that interesting to begin with. One of these revolves around Sully's side gig as a flight safety contractor that he plans to start up once he retires. There's just enough of this to make us wonder if a scene was cut, but not enough to wrap up that portion of the story. Why include if you don't intend to finish telling it? Blame Director Clint Eastwood for that error, because it feels like filler, especially when considering the potential this film ignores. As much as Sully is about the courage, quick thinking, and skill of the pilot, I know there must have been other interesting perspectives that Eastwood could have used. And while we do see some of these, the script by Writer Todd Komarnick is clearly centered on Sully vs the NTSB. Whether the drama produced during those investigations is accurate or not, things still feel manufactured, as if the heroism somehow was just not enough.

But at its heart, Sully is merely competent, mostly well-cast, and only modestly impactful. I'm not sure how audiences will react when they see a commercial jet plunge into buildings during Sully's nightmares, but those are the most stirring moments of the movie. That, and the plane's actual landing in the Hudson River are special, not because the CGI looks so appealing but because it's really at the heart of the matter. Did Sully have enough thrust to return to the airport? Was the NTSB will to sacrifice the skill of the pilot for the loss of the plane? Unfortunately, none of this plays out too effectively, as Eastwood really paints by the numbers: show this scene, act out this moment, say something meaningful, move on to the next scene. Visually speaking, it's a pretty dull affair, as Eastwood and long-time collaborator Cinematographer Tom Stern fail to push the historical sub-genre beyond "plane/water/hero/inquisition/validation." By the time that the actual disaster plays out, we're wondering why it took so long to get here.

Hanks - for all his stature and good-natured respect in Hollywood - has now played the same type of character in at least different films. It's impossible to tell them apart, and even his upcoming return to Robert Langdon doesn't promise to be anything different. That steadiness of return might be appealing for some, as Hanks is one of the best in the business. But when Sully, James Donovan, and Captain Phillips all morph into the hero-next-door, it becomes difficult to see Hanks the actor any longer. Eckhart is easily one of Hollywood's least-appreciated, as we think the industry just doesn't know what to do with him. Still he's an effective Skiles, but we know little of him by film's end. Why does he come to trust Sully, when all he appears to be is the co-pilot? What's his backstory that brought him to work with Sully for that moment? That same sort of questioning also brings down Linney, who apparently never leaves home and worries from afar. Like I said, so much potential lies in these side stories that you want to kick Eastwood for missing them.

Finally, there is a serious lack of on-screen danger here: the plane lands, people jump off, others come to help, the day is saved in just 24 minutes. It's such a tame experience that you wonder if it even happened that way. The lack of real conflict here is painfully apparent and none of those side stories ever intersect Sully. He's there to save the day and his passengers and crew are there to be set up so that Sully can save them. I won't dare say that Sullenberger deserves a hero's medal for saving all 155 souls, but this extraordinary feat feels...well...ordinary. But, it is great to see humanity work together as well as they did once the disaster unfolds; no one pushes or shoves to get out of the plane, and that spirit of cooperation feels genuinely warm.

For those seeking a super-fire winner to the Summer's worst selection of films in recent memory, Sully arrives with its messages of sacrifice, heroism and team, blending them into a competent and likable concoction. But for those ready for real Oscar contenders, this one just doesn't do it, not because of scale but due to Eastwood's lazy camera and pacing. By the time we're done, the impact of Sullenberger's achievement feels somehow lessened.

Sully is rated PG-13 for some peril and brief strong language and has a runtime of 95 minutes.

Fantastic Fest 2016 Announces Final Wave of Programming

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE'S FANTASTIC FEST GOES BIG WITH FINAL PROGRAMMING WAVE AND NACHO VIGALONDO'S "COLOSSAL" AS THE CLOSING NIGHT FILM

Programming lineup for 2016 Festival also includes HBO's much-anticipated "Westworld", Focus Features' "A Monster Calls", and Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA live-scoring a kung fu classic!

A bevy of esteemed guests including Dolph Lundgren, Leonard Maltin, Bruce Campbell, Paul Schrader, and many more!

Alamo Drafthouse's Fantastic Fest unveils its final wave of programming with a giant-sized round up of the wildest films from across the planet. Opening the announcement and closing out the festival is the triumphant return of Fantastic Fest's Karaoke King Nacho Vigalondo with his kaiju monster mash-up COLOSSAL, starring Hollywood heavies Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis.

Converging music, film and art, Fantastic Fest welcomes fellow festival alumni and Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA for his first ever live re-score. Eighteen months in the making, RZA: LIVE FROM THE 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN is a mammoth live re-scoring of the Shaw Brothers classic. Featuring over 40+ tracks culled from RZA's monumental catalog, instrumentals, beats, samples and vocals amplify Lau Kar-leung's narrative and Gordon Liu's iconic performance.

"I am thrilled to be welcoming so many first-time directors to our weird festival family this year," said Fantastic Fest founder Tim League. "But as counterpoint, I am equally excited to be closing it down with veterans Nacho and RZA. In 2016, we're going out with an epic bang."

Fantastic Fest embraces its more physical side with a series of violent smashers that are guaranteed to leave heads spinning and jaws rattled. All 6' 5" of our favorite chemical engineer will be in attendance as Dolph Lundgren promises to pummel Austin and demons alike with DON'T KILL IT. Paul Schrader will be making a very special appearance in the second half of the festival to share and discuss his wild exploration of the criminal underground, DOG EAT DOG. Indonesia is gloriously represented with HEADSHOT, the latest from the Mo Brothers and THE RAID / THE RAID 2's Iko Uwais in what is guaranteed to be the most violent film of the year, and Hong Kong comes correct with the legendary Sammo Hung choreographing the action in Benny Chan's wuxia western, CALL OF HEROES.

"There was so much that we loved this year, it's wonderful to finally be able to share the full slate. We watched over 800 films and getting it down to 80 proved nearly impossible," said Fantastic Fest Head of Programming, Evrim Ersoy, "But we're here and we can't wait to see people watch these brilliant delights with shock and awe in equal measure."

TV takes center stage with two of the season's most hotly anticipated shows gracing the big screen. The man, the myth, The Bruce Campbell will be in attendance battling the Necronomicon once more and bringing new episodes of ASH VS EVIL DEAD with him. Campbell will also be sitting with critic/film historian Leonard Maltin for an exclusive dialog spanning his entire career. HBO joins the Fantastic Fest fray with an exclusive screening of the first episode of its highly anticipated new drama series, WESTWORLD. Inspired by Michael Crichton's '73 sci fi classic, this supremely contemporary rendering is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. WESTWORLD will be accompanied by a complimentary, classic western meal for all guests courtesy of HBO. Artfully prepared by the Alamo Drafthouse culinary team, the meal will draw its influence and ingredients from the frontier era and its expansive environment.

Western meals aren't the only munchies inspiring programming as three of the festival's most high profile gross-outs are first timers. Morgan Spurlock marks his Fantastic Fest debut with his uber-disgusting dissection of the most loathsome rodent in his doc RATS. Spurlock will be in attendance to talk about the vicious vermin and their endless conquest to take over the world. Another stomach-churning debut is Puke and Explode, a gala event of competitive eating dedicated to both gastro excess and grotesque edibles as contestants devour the most mortifying morsels imaginable. And in the grand tradition of festival favorite 100 BEST KILLS, Fantastic Fest vets Zack Carlson and Laird Jimenez deliver 100 BEST KILLS: 100 WORST BIRTHS, a dazzling array of the most nauseating, disturbing, inhuman and downright vomitous births in cinematic history. From sci-fi cesareans to martial arts miscarriages to horror hysterectomies, they will permanently sterilize viewers with 80 minutes of no-holes-barred babyrage.

Mondo will be driving movie fans crazy with a creative cornucopia of limited-edition collectibles at Fantastic Fest for the first time. The roll call of film tie-ins include super-exclusives for RZA: LIVE FROM THE 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN, and product signing sessions with Don Coscarelli and the cast of PHANTASM: REMASTERED and André Øvredal with THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE.

During Fantastic Fest, Mondo is also hosting Italian composer extraordinaire Fabio Frizzi as he performs THE BEYOND: COMPOSER'S CUT, his all-new live re-score of Lucio Fulci's shocker in a supremely gothic church with jaw-dropping acoustics.

Disney/Pixar's #FINDINGDORY On Digital HD Oct 25 & Blu-ray Nov 15.

Dive deep into the kelp to find out more about the making of the film with extensive extras featuring the creative talent of Pixar and the all-star cast!

The summer blockbuster hit, Disney•Pixar's “Finding Dory,” swims home just in time for the holidays on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) on Oct. 25 and on Blu-ray 3D™, Blu-ray, DVD and On-Demand on Nov. 15. Viewers can watch Dory’s hilarious and heartwarming quest to find her family and continue the underwater adventure with hours of immersive bonus features.

The film’s playful and plentiful bonus offerings include “Piper,” the theatrical short film starring an irresistible sandpiper hatchling; an all-new mini short featuring interviews with Dory’s pals from the Marine Life Institute; a behind-the-scenes look at the most challenging character Pixar has ever created; never-before-seen deleted scenes, including a digital exclusive featuring the Tank Gang from “Finding Nemo” who make it their mission to get Marlin and Nemo to the Marine Life Institute; and much, much more.

“Finding Dory” features an all-star voice cast, reuniting Ellen DeGeneres (“The Ellen DeGeneres Show”) and Albert Brooks (“This is 40”) as Dory and Marlin, the ever-optimistic blue tang and the uptight but loyal clownfish. Ed O’Neill (“Modern Family”) lends his voice to “septopus” Hank, Kaitlin Olson (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) voices whale shark Destiny, and Ty Burrell (“Modern Family”) gives voice to beluga whale Bailey. Dory’s doting parents Charlie and Jenny are portrayed by Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) and Diane Keaton (“Love the Coopers”), and 12-year-old Hayden Rolence (“Beta Persei”) steps in as Nemo, the young clownfish with a lucky fin.

Thirteen years after the original, audiences get a new chapter in the story of their favorite forgetful blue tang. As returning director Andrew Stanton describes, “I realized that I was worried about Dory. The idea of her short-term memory loss and how it affected her was unresolved. What if she got lost again?” His response is a touching tale of friendship and family that’s truly unforgettable … perhaps even for Dory.
Bonus features include*:
Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray & Digital HD:
• Theatrical Short: “Piper” – A hungry sandpiper hatchling ventures from her nest for the first time to dig for food by the shoreline. The only problem is that the food is buried beneath the sand where scary waves roll up onto the shore.
• Marine Life Interviews (All-New Mini Short) – Meet the inhabitants of the Marine Life Institute as they remember our favorite blue tang.
• The Octopus That Nearly Broke Pixar – Pixar’s “Team Hank” unravels the challenges, frustrations, and rewards of bringing to life the studio’s crankiest and most technically complicated character ever.
• What Were We Talking About? – This piece showcases the complex routes Dory’s story took as the filmmakers worked to construct a comprehensive narrative involving a main character with short-term memory loss.
• Casual Carpool – What’s it like to commute with the voices of Marlin, Charlie, Bailey and Hank? Join “Finding Dory” writer/director Andrew Stanton as he drives Albert Brooks, Eugene Levy, Ty Burrell and Ed O’Neill to work.
• Animation & Acting – How do you create a connection between a human audience and a fish? This behind-the-scenes look behind the curtain examines the process of constructing believable performances through a unique collaboration between the director, voice actors and animators.
• Creature Features – The cast of “Finding Dory” share cool facts about the creatures they voice in the film.
• Deep in the Kelp – Disney Channel’s Jenna Ortega guides us on a research trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to show how far the “Finding Dory” crew went to make Dory’s world feel real.
• Skating & Sketching with Jason Deamer – “Finding Dory” character art director Jason Deamer talks about how he got to Pixar, how he draws the characters in the film, and how falling off a skateboard teaches you lessons you can use in art and life.
• Dory’s Theme – A spirited discussion among the composer, music editor and director of “Finding Dory” about the musical elements that shape Dory’s quirky and joyful theme.
• Rough Day on the Reef – Sometimes computers make mistakes. Here you’ll see some of the funny, creepy and just plain bizarre footage the crew encountered while making “Finding Dory.”
• Commentary – Director Andrew Stanton, co-director Angus MacLane and producer Lindsey Collins deliver their personal perspective on “Finding Dory.”
• Deleted Scenes (introduced by director Andrew Stanton)
o Losing Nemo – While watching the stingray migration, Dory starts to follow two fish that remind her of her parents, leaving Nemo all alone.
o Little Tension in Clown Town – In this alternate version of the film, Dory tries to "follow her fins" to her parents, but ends up in a strange place with even stranger fish fashion.
o Dory Dumped – In this early version of the story, Dory's parents had short-term memory loss as well.
o Sleep Swimming – Dory begins to talk and swim in her sleep, revealing what seem to be clues to her past.
o Meeting Hank – Wandering the Marine Life Institute's elaborate pipe system, Dory happens upon the abode of Hank the cranky octopus.
o The Pig – Frantically navigating the pipes of the Marine Life Institute in search of her parents, Dory crosses paths with a terrifying cleaning device.
o Starting Over – Director Andrew Stanton presents four different versions of the movie’s opening scene to illustrate the filmmakers’ search for the best way to introduce Dory’s backstory and to connect this new film to “Finding Nemo.”
o Tank Gang (Digital exclusive) – After a close encounter with a squid leaves them separated from Dory, Marlin and Nemo unexpectedly meet up with the Tank Gang from “Finding Nemo,” who make it their mission to get to the Marine Life Institute … by any means necessary.
o Hidden Seacrets of Finding Dory (Digital exclusive) – Take a deep dive to catch secret Easter Eggs throughout the movie. And just like Hank, they’re hidden in plain sight.
DVD:
• Theatrical Short: Piper & Commentary

From the Academy Award®–winning creators of Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” (Best Animated Feature, 2003) comes an epic undersea adventure filled with imagination, humor and heart. When Dory, the forgetful blue tang (Ellen DeGeneres), suddenly remembers she has a family who may be looking for her, she, Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) take off on a life-changing quest to find them … with help from Hank, a cantankerous octopus; Bailey, a beluga whale who’s convinced his biological sonar skills are on the fritz; and Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark. Bring home the movie overflowing with unforgettable characters, dazzling animation and gallons of bonus extras.

Directed by Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL•E”) and co-directed by Angus MacLane (“Toy Story OF TERROR!”), the film is produced by Lindsey Collins (co-producer “WALL•E”) and executive produced by John Lasseter. Victoria Strouse (“October Road”) wrote the script with Stanton. Veteran composer and longtime Stanton collaborator Thomas Newman (“Bridge of Spies,” “WALL•E,” “Finding Nemo”) created the film’s music score and singer-songwriter Sia performs the film’s end-credit song, “Unforgettable.”

Joe Manganiello Will Play Deathstroke In Batman Solo Film

Last week, Ben Affleck took the unusual step of letting slip a teasing hint about the future of his stand-alone Batman film via Twitter, putting up a video of the villain Deathstroke, albeit one in his costume who didn't speak. Now we know who will be filling the suit in future appearances as The Wall Street Journal has learned that Magic Mike's Joe Manganiello (who had previously been rumored) has the role.

DC Entertainment President and chief creative officer Geoff Johns let slip the casting information in an interview, though he refused to comment on whether Deathstroke will first show up in next year's Justice League before causing problems for Affleck's Bruce Wayne in the promised Batman outing.

Created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, Deathstroke first appeared in Teen Titans #2 in 1980. Slade Wilson (as his family knows him) is an assassin and a mercenary, and while he's more often found in the Green Arrow's rogue's gallery – and has turned up on the DC TV series – he has crossed Batman's path several times. Their memorable first meeting was in a 1991 Deathstroke comic story arc titled City Of Assassins, where he beat the Dark Knight to a pulp. Charming.

@FunkoDCLegion Review: September 2016

Legion's WOMEN OF DC box packs a Wonder Woman punch of bad ass! Review by Matt Cummings
DC's Legion of Collectors box has already proven its worth with a well-appointed SUICIDE SQUAD box in July and a solid series of offerings that are also strangely familiar to Marvel Collector Corps. But the question always remained how the every-other-month sub box would handle periods where no new DC film or TV show was available. I am happy to report that this month's WOMEN OF DC reveals an impressive set of goodies that establishes itself as one of the best superhero boxes of 2016. The Promise
Before we begin, let's look at the deal again: promising a value of $50, the sub continues the tradition of Funko partnering each time to deliver an exclusive figure and t-shirt without the fluff or filter (their words). Joining at the VIGILANTE MEMBERSHIP, members receive 6 boxes every year, with the promise of an exclusive themed collectible gift on the one-year anniversary of your annual membership pf $150 p sh/h. You can also subscribe at the SIDEKICK LEVEL at $25 with $6.95 shipping. That's literally the same deal as Marvel Collector Corps. DC/Funko promises a similar one-year anniversary item with VIGILANTE, but with the spectacular failure behind Marvel Collector Corps' Golden Cap figure, I'm not hopeful for a cool reveal. The Delivery We use QUALITY and TIMING to base our reviews, so let's see how this box stands up. As always, we'll end our review with some additional thoughts after the unboxing:

#MarvelCollectorCorps Review: August 2016

Marvel Collector Corps' SPIDER-MAN box arrives 3 WEEKS LATE and filled with disappointment.

Review by Matt Cummings

With the sting of the disastrous Marvel Super Box - now called "Stupor Box" - still in our noses, we were hopeful that this month's Spider-man box would deflect our extreme worry at MCC's current trajectory. Sadly, a very late arrival and another disappointment puts Marvel Collector Corps in a tailspin and their future in doubt.

The Promise

Before we begin, let's look at the original deal and MCC's current offering: promising a value of $50, regular boxes would keep the "fluff" (their words) to a minimum with Funko partnering each time to deliver an exclusive figure. Regardless if you joined at the Founders level or took on a per-box delivery, the Year One box was offered for an additional cost of $135 after tax. That's approximately the price of 4 regular boxes. Founders (like myself) were offered first crack at purchasing these, which were billed as "bigger and better than anything that's come before" in their PR materials.

With Year One Founders already receiving a golden (and somewhat disappointing) chintzy Captain America statue for their one-year commitment, it's clear that such a 'reward' was not exactly what fans had in mind. Based on previous situations, one could see MCC's team learning from their mistake, vowing to never do it again. And yet, the Spider-man box does little to sway our worry that MCC has hit a creative low, both in terms of quality, diversity, and timing.

The Delivery
As always, we use QUALITY and TIMING to base our reviews, so let's see exactly what happened. As always, we'll end our review with some additional thoughts after the unboxing:

The Guts
Considering the enormous support fans have given Tom Holland after his debut as Spider-Man in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War movie, the time seemed right for Funko to release a subscription box celebrating the titular web crawler. But considering what we got from this box, it feels like a retread of past boxes.

Pin/Patch
Granted, some of the items are well made, making their consistent appearance a welcomed anchor. This includes the marvelous pin/patch which harkens back to the 1970's Spider-man television show, as well as the more recent Amazing Spider-man film series. These are well-made and smart additions that celebrate the history of Spider-man, and I'm very OK with their inclusion.

The Comic
There is also the wonderful and completely appropriate variant of Spider-man #16. Again, these are welcomed and entirely awesome products that have defined the boxes and why I have supported them over the past year. WIN and WIN.

The Wearable
It was when I pulled away the comic that the remainder of the box that I realized the remainder would be a retread of past boxes, in that none - and I mean NONE - of Spidey's allies or enemies would be featured. Instead of a much-needed enemies t-shirt, we get yet another Funko POP Tops hat. This wouldn't have been a problem, had I already received the Groot hat in the "Stupor Box" as well as a C3PO lid from the Jabba’s Palace Smugler's Bounty box. That's three hats from Funko in under a month, most of which have either already been sold or dumped in a pile for my students to take. Now to its strength, the hat is well made and designed as you can see. But just like Loot Crate and Geek Fuel, MCC is trying to diversify their lineup by offering other wearables, something that I know many fans really don't want. Give us the shirts and skip the hats!

Unnecessary Overkill
And while the surprising appearance of a Funko Spider-Man Fabrikations figure does check off the box on "new and unique items," it's not exactly a desirable one in my book. True, I don't collect Fabrikations, and yes the plushie is nice, but I also don't collect hats, regardless of how nice they are. Current eBay prices peg the figure at around $5.99, which doesn't exactly qualify as a "high-end item." From all the Twitter activity since my box was lost in "Processing Hell," it seems like fans want unique items which include shirts, Pop figures, and other more rare and popular items. Imagine the interest if Marvel Legends and Funko teamed up for a year of exclusive figures - MCC would run out of boxes. However, few will be impressed if we continue to get mugs we don't need, hats we don't want, scarves we can't use, Hikaris that look worse than the company's original product, and Fabrikations that no one owns. Filling our boxes with content that doesn't sell in stores (Fabrikations, I'm talking to you!) is a business plan that lesser boxes utilize. If you want to be Loot Crate and Geek Fuel, you'll be doing it with someone else's money.

More of the Same, and Yet Less...Again
But it's the bread and butter of the lot that perhaps disappoints the most. The exclusive POP Vinyl Leaping Spider-Man should have been the Green Goblin we received in "Stupor Box." Instead, we get yet another Spidey, which on paper had to seem like overkill and doesn't look good in its execution. At the very least the box feels uninspired, as if MCC literally collected proof-of-concept items from their warehouse instead of going out to its manufacturers for unique designs. This is the same thing MCC has done with Captain America, giving us way more versions than I want/need and failing to dig deep into their character's histories to pull out something special. Sure, the box might retail for over $25, but it doesn't mean I have to like the contents.

The Bottom Line
What once seemed like a surefire hit, the Marvel Collector Corps's model now feels worn and in a decline. We never thought we'd say this about, but with two big-time disappointments (including the "Stupor Box"), we're considering the cancellation of our subscription if MCC doesn't turn it around. At the very least, MCC needs a major refresh for 2017, even if that means divorcing itself from Funko. That's not likely to happen, so we're wondering if fans will stick around for box after box of the same thing. With our renewal happening soon, we're in a hold pattern until we've had more time to process this latest disappointment.

HEADSHOT Trailer Starring Iko Uwais From The Raid

A nameless man (Uwais) wakes up in a hospital with severe head trauma, not knowing who he is or what happened to him. Assisted by devoted student doctor Ailin (Chelsea Islan), who nicknames him “Ishmael” after the character in Moby Dick, he recovers and tries to regain his memory.

Naturally, Ishmael’s past is about to catch up with him, in the form of Lee (Sunny Pang), a drug lord and gang boss whose tentacles reach deep into the police and the penal system. Rebecca Ferguson Cast Along Side Hugh Jackman In The Greatest Showman

Variety is reporting Rebecca Ferguson has been cast opposite Hugh Jackman in Fox’s P.T. Barnum musical biopic “The Greatest Showman” as Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind.

She joins Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya on the project. Michael Gracey is directing from a script by Michael Arndt.

Chernin Entertainment and Laurence Mark are producing. Production is set to begin in the fall.

Justin Paul and Benj Pasek, who were Tony-nominated for “The Christmas Story,” are writing original songs for the film. Kira Goldberg is overseeing the project for Fox.

The project has been in development since 2009 with Jackman attached to play the showman, who rose from humble roots and was able to hoax a gullible public, as he created the three-ring Barnum & Bailey Circus that made him famous. Barnum gained fame as a 19th century impresario with tours of Tom Thumb and Lind; he began calling it the “Greatest Show on Earth” near the end of his career.

Ferguson, who broke out in “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” last year — will next star in “The Girl on the Train,” due out Oct. 7 from Universal. She will also star in Daniel Espinosa’s “Life,” opposite Ryan Reynolds for Sony and Tomas Alfredson’s “The Snowman” opposite Michael Fassbender and Chloe Sevigny for Universal.
