The Three Stooges Will Get a Sequel, Apparently.

Get ready for the Second Nyuking.

By Brandon Wolfe

The Farrelly Brothers’ 2012 decade-in-the-making passion project The Three Stooges, a contemporary updating of the misadventures of nitwits Larry, Moe and Curly, didn’t exactly set the world on fire. It turned a very modest profit, and contained an uncanny performance by Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, but didn’t inspire much enthusiasm otherwise. Still, it’s a recognizable brand name, and in this day and age that means it must be plundered and strip-mined as is customary for anything from the past that people have heard of. Ergo, we are now getting a Stooges sequel, with Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso reprising their roles. The returning cast will be joined by “a major action star.” Because it’s a sequel to a movie that he wasn’t in, let’s put some money on The Rock.

No word on if the Farrellys will have any involvement in the sequel, but Cameron Fay has been hired to write the script.

Movie Review: 'Hot Pursuit'

The female roadtrip comedy Hot Pursuit is a shoddy, hot mess.

Review by Matt Cummings

In Director Anne Fletcher's Hot Pursuit, the uptight Texas cop Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) tries to protect the wife of a Mexican drug lord (Sofia Vergara) after her to-be-snitch-husband buys it in a shootout. Cooper is by-the-book, instantly clashing with Daniella Riva's wall-to-wall shoe fetish and ignorance of the dangers she's under. Cooper brings along her own baggage as well, suffering from an embarrassing incident that's left her desk-ridden. Before Cooper and Riva can arrive in Dallas, they must go on the roadtrip from hell, dodging dirty cops, senior citizens, and a fierce drug lord who Riva blames for the death of her husband.

From the moment Fletcher's film begins, we know exactly where this low-brow comedy will go. There's a transvestite in the back of a cop car, to a supposedly funny tasing of a college student that sets him on fire, each of which sets its bar pretty low but never truly makes it very funny. There's no sequence that will leave you in stitches, nor any that haven't already seen in other (better) films. I had similar feelings going in to John Wick and The Equalizer, but the reasons those succeeded are based on the quality of the production and its characters. You'll never feel a connection to these characters, making anything that happens feel one-off and at some points boring. Even at 87 minutes, I found myself looking at my watch in many sequences, because I simply didn't care about the paper-thin characters and their interactions.

For all her looks, Vergara simply cannot keep up with Witherspoon, struggling to get one-liners out with her heavy accent while Witherspoon patiently waits. Known recently for her more serious roles, Witherspoon is perhaps one of the great understated comedic properties in film: remember that she's played Elle Woods to near-perfection). Here, she's just not given that much comedic meat in the sandwich, achieving some physical comedy with her amazingly-short stature, nearly getting caught in Vergara's near-Amazonian shadow. I get the physical comedic juxtaposition, but when that's mostly all you've got, one has to wonder if the real humor was drained away in audience feedback.

Fletcher and Writers David Feeney and John Quaintance just don't click, mixing the dull-low brow with Fletcher's shoddy camera work, including another batch of horrible CGI. There's a ton of on-the-nose foreshadowing here, all of which happens with checkbox clockwork. The worst centers on a former con (Pacific Rim's Robert Kazinsky) who got arrested for battery, who just so happens to beat up someone in the movie. Convenient. And then there's the hollow plot twists that suffer from zero build up, including one that feels like it was either hastily added or part of a larger set of scenes that were axed. It's these sort of missteps and bad decisions that ultimately derail what should have been a rip-roaring good time.

I've made on many occasions my love for low-brow comedies like Bachelor Party, Ted, and The Watch. Hot Pursuit isn't anywhere close, on the same level as 2015's The Wedding Ringer or Get Hard. None of these capture their talent's immense abilities, leaving audiences with the same empty feeling of spending good money on the Paquao/Mayweather dullfest. Pursuit might be worth your time once it reaches Netflix, but it's quite simply something you can forget for now.

Hot Pursuit is Rated PG-13 for sexual content, violence, language and some drug material and has runtime of 87 minutes.

Two More Characters Join 'Captain America: Civil War'

Learn below which two Marvel heroes will be joining the superhero beatdown!

Story by Matt Cummings

It's becoming clear that Marvel's kickoff to Phase 3 - Captain America: Civil War - doesn't only feature The Star-Spangled Man, but will be host to a growing number of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the past few months, we've learned that Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Falcon will join Cap and Iron Man as they battle over the Superhuman Registration Act. Yesterday saw actor Martin Freeman sign on to play an unknown role.

That list got a little bigger today, when it was announced that both Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Black Panther (Chadwick Bozeman) will also appear. The film will mark Bozeman's first as Black Panther, while Rudd's Ant-Man will enjoy a second appearance. The movie will apparently only follow a limited amount of the original comic plot, where an international incident forces both Cap and Iron Man to choose sides regarding the Act. We're still waiting to see when Spider-Man will be announced, as shooting will be starting soon.

They'll have a lot of heroes to try to convince to their side. Joining them will be Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter/Agent 13), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Daniel Brühl (Baron Zemo), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), William Hurt (General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross) and the newly-signed Martin Freeman in an unknown role. Age of Ultron team members Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Vision (Paul Bettany), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), War Machine (Don Cheadle, and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).

#Nintendo Characters To Invade Universal Parks

Nintendo, which has spent much of 2015 expanding beyond its traditional video game roots, has partnered with Universal Parks and Resorts to bring Mario, Donkey Kong and the rest of the company’s extensive collection of characters to the parks in the form of Nintendo-themed rides and character appearances.

While the companies declined to discuss specific details of the arrangement, many well-known Nintendo games lend themselves to theme park attractions. It doesn’t take too much imagination, for instance, to envision a ride based on “Mario Kart” or the space action series “Star Fox.”

This is a first of its kind deal for Nintendo, which previously has been extraordinarily protective of its IP. As the Wii U console has struggled against the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, though, the company has been aggressively exploring other ways to capitalize on its holdings. Two months ago, Nintendo announced a partnership with Japanese mobile giant DeNA to bring games featuring its characters to Android and iOS mobile devices.

Beyond the deal with Universal, Nintendo also hinted that it is open to producing video content based on its characters as well — an admission that comes less than two months after the company denied reports that a Netflix-produced live-action series based on “The Legend of Zelda” was in the works.

“For Nintendo IP, a more active approach will be taken in areas outside the video game business, including visual content production and character merchandising,” the company said as part of its just-released annual earnings statement.

Disney's #Zootopia Voice Cast Announced

Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman Head to “Zootopia

Walt Disney Animation Studios welcomes Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman to “Zootopia,” Disney’s 2016 animated feature set in a modern mammal metropolis. Goodwin (ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” “Something Borrowed,” “Walk the Line”) will lend her voice to an optimistic bunny named Judy Hopps who’s new to Zootopia’s police department. Jason Bateman (“Horrible Bosses 2,” “This is Where I Leave You”) voices the scamming fox, Nick Wilde, who Judy reluctantly teams up with to crack her first case.

“We knew that ‘Zootopia’ would only succeed if we found the perfect actors to play our main characters,” said director Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”). “This rabbit- and fox-duo are in practically every scene in the film together. After meeting Ginnifer, we knew she embodied Hopps, the ultimate pure-of-heart, idealist bunny. You fall in love with her character instantly. And for Nick Wilde, our cynical con-artist fox, we only ever had one actor in mind, the incomparable Jason Bateman. Jason has a way of saying the most hilarious sarcastic things while always staying completely charming. We feel so fortunate to be working with both of them.”

The film opens nationwide March 4, 2016.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure is directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”).

Beverly Hills Cop 4 Put On The Shelf

Announced at the end of 2013, word on the developing Beverly Hills Cop 4 has been notably scarce in the months since. So it's perhaps no surprise that the Axel Foley fourquel has been pulled from the release schedules for the time being. It won't now arrive on March 25, 2016, although Eddie Murphy and Brett Ratner remain attached, respectively, to star and direct when and if the project eventually moves forward.

Industry suspicions had already been aroused when Paramount moved its big-hitter Monster Trucks to a March, 2016 release date. But while it sounds bad, Foley may also be dodging a bullet, since he won't now share his comeback slot with Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. That's a fight he was never going to win.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 was one of the earliest announced projects to come from Jerry Bruckheimer's exit from Disney and return to his former home at Paramount. Following an abandoned attempt at a TV series (with which Bruckheimer had no involvement), it seemed like a no-brainer to place the super-producer back on the property that had given the Simpson/Bruckheimer partnership one of its earliest, biggest hits.

It seems that the screenplay has remained the sticking point, however, with nobody yet quite cracking Axel's return. Following the TV debacle and the dismal threequel in 1993, Murphy is for once exercising some quality control. "I’m not doing a Beverly Hills Cop unless they have a really incredible script," he told Rolling Stone in January. "They're trying to get it right. I’ve read a couple things that look like they can make some paper, but I’m not doing a shitty movie just to make some paper. The shit got to be right."

Here is the theatrical trailer debut of IFC Midnight's new film THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3 (FINAL SEQUENCE) directed by Tom Six and starring Dieter Laser, Laurence R. Harvey, Eric Roberts and Bree Olson. The film will be released theatrically and on VOD/digital streaming services starting Friday, May 22nd.

The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)

100% politically incorrect

Bully prison warden Bill Boss (The Human Centipede Part I's Dieter Laser) has a lot of problems; prison riots, medical costs, staff turnover, but foremost he is unable to get the respect he thinks he deserves from his inmates and the state Governor (Eric Roberts). He constantly fails in experimenting with different ideas for the ideal punishment to get the inmates in line, which drives him completely insane. Under threats of termination by the Governor, his loyal right hand man Dwight (The Human Centipede Part II's Laurence R Harvey) comes up with a brilliant idea. An idea based on the notorious Human Centipede movies, that will literally and figuratively get the inmates on their knees, creating the ultimate punishment and deterrent for anyone considering a life of crime.

TRUE DETECTIVE’S CARY FUKUNAGA To Direct Untitled Drama For @A24

A24 AND TRUE DETECTIVE’S CARY FUKUNAGA TO DEVELOP AND PRODUCE INSPIRING FATHER-SON DRAMA FOR FUKUNAGA TO DIRECT

Award-winning filmmaker Cary Fukunaga and A24 will develop an untitled drama based on the true story of Joe and Jadin Bell that Fukunaga will direct, with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN writers Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana to write the script, it was announced today. This marks the first project to be developed from script to screen by A24, who are producing the film along with Fukunaga’s Parliament of Owls production company, Daniela Taplin Lundberg and Riva Marker of Red Crown Productions, and Eva Maria Daniels of VisionChaos Productions. Daniel Crown of Red Crown will executive produce.

The project is based upon the true story of Oregonian father-and-son Joe and Jadin Bell. Jadin, a fifteen-year-old openly gay sophomore, took his own life after being both bullied at high school and struggling for acceptance from the people closest to him. In the wake of Jadin's suicide, Joe is plunged into a sea of remorse and regret. Attempting to work through his grief, Joe sets out on a walk across America, hoping to promote awareness about the consequences of prejudice to anyone he encounters along the way.

“Joe and Jadin Bell’s story is a poignant reminder of how precious life is, and a life-affirming example of love transcending the prejudice and victimization familiar to many,” said A24. “Cary is a truly exceptional filmmaker. We are honored to help bring his vision of this incredible true story to screen. With the legendary talents of Larry and Diana writing the script, we have no doubt this will be a profoundly emotional and unforgettable film.”

Fukunaga most recently directed the upcoming drama BEASTS OF NO NATION produced by Red Crown Productions, which was acquired by Netflix last month in a groundbreaking eight-figure deal. Fukunaga made his feature film writing and directing debut with the critically acclaimed SIN NOMBRE followed by the film adaptation of classic novel JANE EYRE, both released by Focus Features. Fukunaga notably won an Emmy for directing the first season of HBO’s acclaimed mystery drama True Detective, which he also executive produced. He is currently in pre-production on the big screen adaptation on Stephen King’s IT for New Line Cinema. The two-part film is set to begin production this summer. Additionally, it was recently announced Fukunaga will direct and Executive Produce an event mini-series inspired by Caleb Carr’s The Alienist for Paramount Television. Academy award-winner Eric Roth will also executive produce and Hossein Amini, who wrote the pilot, will write and serve as an executive producer on the series. Fukunaga is represented by WME and Anonymous Content.

McMurtry and Ossana won an Oscar® for Best Adapted Screenplay for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. They are represented by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorneys Robert Thorne and Greg Redlitz.

Here Are The Candidates to Direct The New Spider-Man

Not a lot of winners caught in this web.

By Brandon Wolfe

The search for yet another Peter Parker is narrowing down for the Sony/Marvel reboot of Spider-Man and now the hunt for a new director has turned up a shortlist of candidates, according to Deadline. Reportedly, the pool that is being looked at includes Jonathan Levine (50/50, Warm Bodies), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (the upcoming Vacation) and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite).

For those among us who groaned at Sony’s previous Spidey choice of Mark Webb, who only had the fizzily slight rom-com (500) Days of Summer under his belt before being handed the job, this list of similarly untested directors of lightweight comedies doesn’t inspire much in the way of enthusiasm. Perhaps a Spider-Man film doesn’t need a heavy-hitter director, but someone with some degree of experience with action and visual effects would seem optimal.

Conspicuously absent from this list is Drew Goddard, the Cabin In The Woods director and Daredevil co-creator who was previously going to write and direct the Sinister Six film before The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s failure scuttled those plans. Goddard was rumored to be grandfathered into this new project due to his work on Sinister Six, but clearly that didn’t pan out. Pity, because Goddard would have been far more suited to the gig than any of these jokers.

A more enticing tidbit to come from the article is that producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are concocting a multi-movie arc that will take place over 3-4 years and chronicle each year of Peter Parker’s high-school experience, in the Harry Potter mold. The idea is to have the spider-biting already out of the way going in so the films can chart Parker as he navigates fighting supervillains and dealing with regular teenage issues concurrently.

The new Spider-Man will make his debut next year in Captain America: Civil War before getting his own movie on July 27, 2017.
