The Farrelly Brothers’ 2012 decade-in-the-making passion project The Three Stooges, a contemporary updating of the misadventures of nitwits Larry, Moe and Curly, didn’t exactly set the world on fire. It turned a very modest profit, and contained an uncanny performance by Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, but didn’t inspire much enthusiasm otherwise. Still, it’s a recognizable brand name, and in this day and age that means it must be plundered and strip-mined as is customary for anything from the past that people have heard of. Ergo, we are now getting a Stooges sequel, with Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso reprising their roles. The returning cast will be joined by “a major action star.” Because it’s a sequel to a movie that he wasn’t in, let’s put some money on The Rock.
No word on if the Farrellys will have any involvement in the sequel, but Cameron Fay has been hired to write the script.
