Altered Focus: Burma Wins Best Independent Emerging Artist At The International Skateboard Film Festival

International Skateboard Film Festival 2011 was held this week and did I uncover a gem. "Altered Focus: Burma." The film was shot in the summer of 2009, Altered Focus: Burma follows three film makers and skateboarders including Harmony and Analog UK rider Ali Drummond, as they travel across Yangon and Mandalay. The film explores the reaction to this unseen activity whilst touching on the political situation there.

"Altered Focus: Burma" won the Best Independent Emerging Artist at the International Skateboard Film Festival 2011 for their video. The entire film was shot on DVCAM and Super 8mm which gives the movie a gridier look then your tradition Hollywood movie.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister’s place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. We are pleased to share the new U.S. theatrical poster of Oscilloscope Laboratories' new film WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller.

A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, Lynne Ramsay's WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores the factious relationship between a mother and her son. Tilda Swinton, in a bracing, tour-de-force performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller).

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores nature vs. nurture on a whole new level as Eva's own culpability is measured against Kevin's innate evilness. Ramsay's masterful storytelling simultaneously combines a provocative moral ambiguity with a satisfying and compelling narrative, which builds to a chilling, unforgettable climax.

Distributor: Oscilloscope Laboratories
Cast: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller
Running time: 112 minutes
Theatrical Opening Dates:
December 9th - New York and Los Angeles - Qualifying run

Anne Hathaway is making the transition from actress to producer. The star has closed a deal to produce and topline Puzzler, a thriller set up at Paramount.

Meoww! Anne Hathaway As Catwoman

The project is described as a female-driven, paranoid thriller in the vein of Three Days of the Condor. Karl Gajdusek, who wrote the recent Nicolas Cage-Nicole Kidman thriller Trespass, will pen the script. The project would mark Hathaway's first producing effort. Joining her as producers are Adam Shulman, Sarah Perlman and Stefan Sonnenfeld, who has a first-look deal with Paramount.

Hathaway's recent credits include One Day, Love and Other Drugs and Alice in Wonderland. She co-hosted the Oscars in February and will star as Catwoman in next summer's The Dark Knight Rises.

Brad Bird Talks The Incredibles 2

Brad Bird, director of the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, told Movies.com that there’s a good reason that there hasn’t been a sequel to The Incredibles, the one film among Pixar’s canon that seems most ripe for a follow-up: he hasn’t been working on one.

“To say that I’ve had trouble [coming up with a story] is to say that [a sequel] has been my pursuit,” Bird said in a recent interview interview in Los Angeles, Calif. “I haven’t really been pursuing that.”

Suffice it to say that there are plenty of films that fans demand sequels for which their makers aren’t interested in sequelizing. But Bird said that he is indeed interested in making a follow-up, as long as he’s able to author it himself rather than turning it over even to Pixar’s almost impossibly talented Brain Trust of filmmakers. Reassuringly, he said that Pixar wanted exactly the same thing.

“I think the reason it hasn’t [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it, if there were another Incredibles,” he explained. “And I’ve told them that I’m not really friendly to have someone else take away my child.” He indicated he had come up with several concepts which he thinks would make for a good sequel, but refuses to rush them into production just for the sake of the film’s moneymaking potential. “I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into a next Incredibles, but I don’t have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that.”

With his three previous films, Bird proved himself a dedicated and detail-oriented filmmaker who wouldn’t settle for less than perfection. He said that he’s holding himself to the same standard as he works on Incredibles 2. “I want to do it because I have something that will be as good or better than the original,” he insisted. “Toy Story 2 was, to me, a perfect sequel, because it absolutely respected the first film but found new places to go without selling out its characters. So if I could come up with an idea that is to Incredibles that Toy Story 2 is to Toy Story, I would do it in a second.”

Meanwhile, some of his fans are no doubt wondering whether or not he’ll return to animated filmmaking at all after directing Ghost Protocol, which will instantaneously launch him into the top tier of Hollywood’s most commercial live-action filmmakers. But Bird insisted that he was just as much in love with his former home – both in terms of the medium, and the place where he made his name. “I would love to do another film with Pixar,” he said simply. “I love them.”

The Phantom Menace 3D Trailer

You may recall that, a couple of weeks ago, the poster for the first 3D reissue of the Star Wars saga arrived like an apocalyptic sign warning that The Phantom Menace was coming back to theaters. But even if you squeezed your eyes shut tight, plugged your ears and began humming the Imperial March at top volume, you can’t ignore the fact. And now comes the second sign: the trailer is online and can be watched below.

There’s not exactly a whole lot new to see here, and since the trailer itself is not in 3D, we’re a little confused why Lucas and co thought it needed to go online. But then any awareness is good awareness, even if you’re part of a film series that has already earned billions.

Naturally, the focus is on the stuff that will look best in 3D, with the space battles and the pod racing given the most exposure. But hey! You get to hear Peter Serafinowicz intone one of the best-remembered lines from the film. So there's a total upside here.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace will be out in 3D on February 10,2012.

Beverly Hills Cop IV Is Dead. Might Become T.V. Show

After years of near-silence, Eddie Murphy gives a rare extensive print interview in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on stands and available through Rolling Stone All Access on October 28th. In the Q&A, Murphy opens up to senior writer Brian Hiatt about the ups and downs of his long career, his possible return to stand-up, his Oscar hosting plans and much more. Murphy, who co-stars in the upcoming Tower Heist, is baffled by his reputation as a near-recluse: "I leave my house all the time," he says. "But I'm not at all the Hollywood parties. I'm grown, and where else am I supposed to be? I'm supposed to be home... If I were out in the clubs every night, they'd be saying, 'That's a shame, look at him, 50 years old, he's still out at these clubs.' Recluses are nasty, with long nails, don't wash their ass... I'm too vain to be a recluse. But homebody, absolutely. I'm 50 years old, beautiful house, I'm supposed to be home, chilling."

Other highlights from the story:
Murphy says that his days of making family movies may be over. "I don't have any interest in that right now," he says. "There's really no blueprint, but I'm trying to do some edgy stuff. And I only want to do what I really want to do, otherwise I'm content to sit here and play my guitar all day. I always tell people now that I'm a semi-retired gentleman of leisure, and occasionally I'll go do some work to break the boredom up."

Murphy has decided not to make Beverly Hills Cop IV. "They're not doing it," he says. "What I'm trying to do now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit. I'd do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force the premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn't be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong."

• Unlike other Saturday Night Live alumni, Murphy has refused to participate in retrospectives and hasn't been on the show in years – but he's gotten over his grudge. "They were shitty to me on Saturday Night Live a couple of times after I'd left the show," he says. "They said some shitty things. There was that David Spade sketch [when Spade showed a picture of Murphy around the time of Vampire In Brooklyn and said, 'Look, children, a falling star']. I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore. What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot.. I felt shitty about it for years, but now, I don't have none of that."

• Murphy hasn't performed stand-up since the late 1980s, but recently, he's given some thought to trying again. "If I ever get back onstage, I'm going to have a really great show for you all," he says. "An hour and a half of stand-up and about 40 minutes of my shitty band... But I haven't done it since I was 27, so why fuck with it? But that's just weighing both sides. It comes up too much for me to not do it again. It's like, when it hits me, I'll do it, eventually."

• Murphy addresses reports that he stormed out of the Oscars after losing the best supporting actor award to Alan Arkin. "Alan Arkin's performance in Little Miss Sunshine is Oscar-worthy, it's a great performance. That's just the way the shit went. He's been gigging for years and years, the guy's in his seventies. I totally understood and was totally cool. I wasn't like, 'What the fuck?' Afterward, people were like, "He's upset," and I'm like, "I wasn't upset!" What happened was after I lost, I'm just chilling, and I was sitting next to BeyoncĂ©'s pops, and he leans over and grabs me and is like, [solemn voice] 'There will be other times.' And then you feel Spielberg on your shoulder going, 'It's all right, man.' Then Clint Eastwood walks by: 'Hey, guy... ' So I was like, 'It's not going to be this night!' [Mimes getting up] I didn't have sour grapes at all. That's another reason I wanted to host the show – to show them that I'm down with it."

BLOOD WAS EVERYWHERE Trailer & Premiere Date

Sun In 10 Productions is proud to announce that the official trailer for the independent horror film BLOOD WAS EVERYWHERE is now available online for viewing. The trailer comes just in time for Halloween and the film's November 5 premiere.

In Blood Was Everywhere, the nightmare of the unsolved, random murder is brought to life as a faceless killer wreaks havoc on the lives of average people in a small Massachusetts town.

In Blood Was Everywhere, the nightmare of the unsolved, random murder is brought to life as a faceless killer wreaks havoc on the lives of average people in a small Massachusetts town.

Blood Was Everywhere will have its world premiere on November 5 at The Green Room in Uxbridge, MA, where portions of the film were shot. Members of the cast and crew will be on hand for this special, intimate screening. The filmmakers will be taking their creation on a tour of independent theaters throughout New England in the coming months with plans for further expansion in 2012 before an eventual DVD release.

The cast features Paul Kratka (Friday the 13th Part III), the late Larry Holden (Memento, Batman Begins) and a number of fresh talent, including Ashley Arnold, Kimberly Simone, Phil Ristaino, Vanessa Leigh, John Westcott, Dita Prenn, Adam Morey, Neal Howland, Ben Kirchmyer, Erin Lynch and Kevin Hayes. Jason Torrey directs from a script that he co-wrote with J R.A Schaefer and executive producer Sherrie Lemire. His vision is brought to life by Emmy Award-winning director of photography Thomas Lowe's refined cinematography.

Inspired by the classic slashers of the late '70s and early '80s such as Halloween, Black Christmas and Friday the 13th, Blood Was Everywhere is a throwback to the glory days of horror while remaining fresh and new. The film forgoes the much-maligned trappings of the genre in favor of a simple yet effective story of a random killing spree. The result is a chilling combination of horror, thriller, mystery and character study.

"Blood Was Everywhere is a dream project of mine," said director Jason Torrey. "My aim was to do what Psycho did for the shower, what Jaws did for the ocean, except my goal was to frighten the viewer about just being at home, where you are supposed to be the safest."

Karl Urban Goes Into "Overdrive"

Karl Urban and Ben Barnes have been cast as car-thief brothers in the France-set actioner Overdrive. Antonio Negret (Seconds Apart) is directing the project, which was written by Wanted and 2 Fast 2 Furious scribes Derek Haas and Michael Brandt. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is in negotiations for the female lead.

Pierre Morel, whose kidnapping thriller Taken was a surprise success in 2008, is producing along with Haas and Brandt. Filming begins October 29 in Marseilles.

Urban, who plays Bones in the revamped Star Trek franchise, and Barnes, who plays Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia series, will play adventurous siblings who find more trouble than they are looking for in the South of France. Alex Pettyfer, Matthew Goode and Garrett Hedlund were each attached at various points during development.

The movie sprang from a trip Haas and Brandt took overseas in November 2008, when they were invited by the French government to tour the country for ten days as part of a Hollywood outreach program called France: Unlimited Access. Finding Marseilles a very cinematic city with an edge, they wrote a crime script that made good use of the local locations.

Urban most recently appeared in Priest and Red. He next stars as the title character in Lionsgate's Dredd, which opens in September 2012.

The Dark Tower Coming To HBO

Though the situation looked bleak for Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer’s ambitious plan to bring Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series to life as a set of films and TV shows when Universal shut down development, the three main players have not lost faith in their attempt to get the project on its feet. And now, talking to MTV, Grazer has explained that the priority will be the TV section, with US cable channel HBO stepping in to pick up the slack.

"We're going to do The Dark Tower with HBO," Grazer says. "We'll do the TV with HBO, and we'll do the movie with… to be determined. We'll do it right."

Just a couple of days ago, Grazer had dropped mention to The Playlist that they’d managed to slice a chunk of the budget off, which means we’ll get to see the film – or films – eventually. And he confirms the new, thriftier cost to MTV: "We're going to do that movie. We've lost $45 million out of the budget. When people say no to you enough, then you have to lose money, which we've done without harming the scope of the film."

We’d note he only mentions one film at this time; chances are the other two proposed movies will have to wait until the box office figures come in.

But this is an interesting development: HBO can certainly pull off something like this with the right talent aboard (see: Game Of Thrones) and while it has other big commitments floating around, such as Tom Hanks’ take on Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, it would seem to be the most logical home for Dark Tower. Particularly since Grazer believes the move could mean that Javier Bardem stays attached as Roland Deschain…
