Zombies vs. Vampires Coming To NBC

Zombies vs. Vampires Coming To NBC

This a title that would certainly score big with the Comic-Con crowd. NBC has closed a deal for Zombies vs. Vampires, a spec script by Jake in Progress creator/executive producer Austin Winsberg. I hear NBC bought preemptively the project, produced by Warner Bros. TV and McG's studio-based Wonderland production banner. Zombies vs. Vampires is described as a "fun buddy cop procedural." It is set in a world where zombies are a part of society, controllable with medication. The show's two leads (one secretly a vampire) are cops assigned to a squad specifically formed to deal with "zombie crime". Winsberg, McG and Peter Johnson are executive producing.

Story Of Lancelot After The Breakup Of Camelot

Story Of Lancelot After The Breakup Of Camelot

Echo Lake, one of the companies behind the Michael Douglas-Demi Moore indie "The Joneses," has nabbed the medieval action script "Man at Arms" from Jeremy Lott.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but "Arms" focuses on Lancelot and his adventures after the breakup of Camelot.

For those who haven't read Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur in a while, the end of King Arthur's life saw him discover that BFF Lancelot had been at it with Guinevere, leading to a schism between the two which allowed bad seed Mordred to usurp Arthur's throne and go to war against his King. Arthur is mortally wounded killing Mordred and carried off on a barge by the Lady of the Lake, and Guinevere and Lancelot both take holy orders and die in their respective convent and monastery.

Echo Lake is hoping to attract a filmmaker that can give the movie a distinct visual style.

The company also is looking at "Arms" as a step into larger commercial projects, continuing a path begun with "The Ward," a ghost thriller directed by John Carpenter and starring Amber Heard that is in postproduction. It also is developing action script "The Prince," by Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio, to act as Carpenter's follow-up.

Stephen Sommers To Return For G.I. Joe Sequel

Stephen Sommers To Return For G.I. Joe Sequel

"G.I. Joe" director Stephen Sommers will return to direct Paramount's sequel.

There had been some doubts about whether Sommers would be brought back into the "Joe" fold, as there were conflicting reports across the blogosphere last summer that there had been some tension between Sommers and the studio, but the alleged bad blood appears to have been resolved.

Channing Tatum is expected to reprise his role as Capt. Duke Hauser in the sequel, which is still in development at Paramount.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Collider reported earlier this year that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick ("Zombieland") were hired to write the sequel, and I'm told that the studio is happy with the draft they turned in.

Sommers will likely produce with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" grossed more than $300 million worldwide last year on a reported production budget of $175 million, not including prints and advertising.

Star Wars Live Action TV Show Put On Hold

Star Wars Live Action TV Show Put On Hold

Lucasfilm has been working on a live-action series set between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope for at least five years - The project was officially announced by George Lucas in 2005 - and, for the most part, keeping a tight lid on potential leaks that could spoil fans for what to expect. But this May, Lucas' update suggested that the series might be too ambitious for its own good:

The live action TV show is kind of on hold because we have scripts, but we don't know how to do 'em. Because, they literally are Star Wars, only we're going to have to try to do them [at] a tenth [of] the cost. And, it's a huge challenge... lot bigger than what we thought it was gonna be.

It's a shame, because what we do know about the project makes it sound like something worth seeing.

The series was originally proposed as 100 hour-long episodes filling in the space between the fall of the Republic at the end of Revenge of The Sith and the ongoing rebellion against the Empire seen at the start of A New Hope, although producer Rick McCallum later suggested an alternate plan of running multiple series simultaneously to tell a massive arc of somewhere around 400 episodes. The show would be different in tone from either the movies or The Clone Wars, moving towards a darker, more character-based storytelling instead of the operatic sweep of Star Wars as we know it, and would've, for the most part, focused on non-Jedi or Sith characters (Which makes sense, considering the Jedi were effectively wiped out in Revenge, and considered a myth by the start of A New Hope), with McCallum telling an interviewer to "think about bounty hunter" when it comes to lead characters. George Lucas himself was rumored to be writing the show's first season, but other writers were being brought onboard, or at least interviewed for positions; in his book A Writer's Tale, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies talks about meeting with Lucas to work on the show (He turned down the opportunity, sadly; I would've loved to have seen his take on the universe, considering how much of his Who seemed a love letter to Lucas).

Viggo Mortensen On The Road

Viggo Mortensen On The Road

Francis Ford Coppola has been working for 30 years to turn Jack Kerouac's seminal Beat Generation novel On the Road into a movie. It is starting to look like it was worth the wait. Amy Adams and Viggo Mortensen are joining the Walter Salles-directed adaptation that will begin this month, I'm told. She will play Jane, the emotionally damaged junkie mother of two children and the wife of Old Bull Lee. Mortensen is going to play Lee. Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley and Tron: Legacy's Garrett Hedlund are also set for the pic.

Adams, who next stars opposite Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in the David O. Russell-directed The Fighter, will follow On The Road by treading on more hallowed 60s ground. She's attached to play songstress Janis Joplin in a film to be directed by City Of God helmer Fernando Mierelles that could happen next year. Mortensen just wrapped the role of Sigmund Freud in the David Cronenberg-directed A Dangerous Method.

Justice League Movie: What Could Have Been

Justice League Movie: What Could Have Been

A few years ago, Australian director George 'Mad Max' Miller assembled a group of young actors to play DC Comics' iconic superhero squad the Justice League Of America. Armie Hammer (Batman), D.J. Catrona (Superman), Adam Brody (The Flash) and Megan Gale (Wonder Woman) would have led the cast with Jay Baruchel and Teresa Palmer.

You were going to work with Teresa Palmer a while ago on a Justice League movie...

"It's weird talking about it because the blogosphere was not very kind to us - they're looking for anything to s**t on! The two of us were going to do that, it sounds really strange out of context, had you read the script it would have made perfect sense."

Do you think it would have won around the blogosphere?

"I'll just say this, if we had been able to make the movie that we had gone down [to Australia] to rehearse, if you had seen the production art I'd seen... it would've been the coolest thing ever. It would have been the neatest vision of Batman and the coolest vision of Superman you've ever seen. It would have been dark and fairly brutal and quite gory and just f**king epic."

What was the problem?

"The problem was that, had it gone to production, it would have been the single most expensive movie in the history of movies. Sometimes people are reticent to spend upwards of $300 million. It was a fun two weeks in Sydney and I got to hang out with one of my idols, George Miller."

Did you get as far as seeing the Justice League heroes in costume?

"I did. My friends, who were training to be Batman and Superman, they were down there for three months training and going to Weta in New Zealand to get their costumes. Weta, which is arguably the greatest special effects house on Earth, they had to cancel everything else. They were doing nothing but our movie. It was going to be f**king dope!"

What else did you see?

"They had everything there; maquettes, pre-visualisation, absolutely everything and we had assembled this neat cast. The rehearsal process was so strange and so unconventional and, I know it sounds hard to belief, but I assure you it would have been something f**king awesome!"

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Release Date

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Films To Be Separated By A Year

Bad news for all you Twi-hards, Summit has announced that The Twilight Saga: Breaking DawnPart One will arrive as planned on November 18 next year, Part Two won’t hit screens until November 16, 2012, a full year later.

Yes, that sound you hear is Twi-Hards scrambling to stock up on camping supplies so that they can spend the months between movies queuing for the next one.

Director Bill Condon must have finally put his foot down and demanded that Summit stop pushing for the movies to come out so quickly, realising that even if Melissa Rosenberg’s scripts don’t include all the out-there madness of the book, it’s still a big task. And chances are there is also the increasingly busy schedule of the cast to be considered when booking in the publicity tours.

And the big question of course, is… at what point will the story be broken up? Will fans be left on tenterhooks wondering what happens next? Er… Doubtful, since the book has long since been on shelves. But still, it’s a heck of a break, longer even than that between the two last Harry Potter movies. Chances are that the break will come somewhere around the [SPOILER] birth of Bella's baby, and that the extra time on Part Two is to allow for the CG-assisted creation of a half-vampire infant who grows almost visibly. [END SPOILER]

And if you care not a jot for anything to do with Stephenie Meyer’s vampire world? Then at the very least, this means you now have a solid date to scribble in your calendar for when the whole thing might actually calm down.

"X-Men: First Class"Gets A Rewrite

"X-Men: First Class"Gets A Rewrite

Director Matthew Vaughn is hard at work on "X-Men: First Class" in London but he took some time out Sunday to catch a screening of "Inception." He enjoyed the Christopher Nolan epic immensely -- even though it prompted him to scrap a dozen pages of the "First Class" script.

"I saw 'Inception,' which I loved," Vaughn said Monday. "But my heart sank when I saw that a few of the ideas we had were up [on the screen]. So it's either leave it in and look as if you're copying or change things. We completely ripped out about 12 pages of the script and the storyboards."

X-Men projections The jettisoned sequence was a sort of dream-space combat, according to Vaughn; that reminded me of "psi war" scenes like the one here on the right from "The Uncanny X-Men" No. 117 way back in 1979, but the filmmaker said for the film the fight involving Professor X (James McAvoy) and some other mutants was to going to be presented with spinning rooms and other physics-bending imagery -- visions that he felt drifted too close to signature moments in "Inception."

The scramble to change the script adds to the flurry of activity on "First Class," which has gone through numerous revisions (there are six people with writing or story credits listed on IMDB, although that may change by the time it reaches the screen) and Vaughn only just inked the deal to direct in early May.

"X-Men: First Class" is a franchise reboot that goes back to the younger days of Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, and Erik Lehnsherr, better known as Magneto and portrayed in this film by Michael Fassbender. The movie marks the return of Bryan Singer to the mutant saga; the director of the first two "X-Men" films is back as a producer on this project and he has a "story by" credit on the screenplay. The film is scheduled for a June 3, 2011 release in the U.S.

Zack Snyder To Direct Another Comic Book Film "Mage"

Zack Snyder To Direct Another Comic Book Film "Mage"

"Watchmen" producer Lloyd Levin is set to bring seminal '80s comicbook "Mage" to the bigscreen.

Levin has acquired bigscreen rights to Matt Wagner's 15-book collection that makes up "The Hero Discovered" arc.

Story -- a reinterpretation of the legend of Camelot -- centers on Kevin Matchstick, an alienated young man who discovers he has superhuman abilities, gains a magic baseball bat and defeats the nefarious plans of a being called the Umbra Sprite.

"It has always been a favorite book of mine," said Levin, whose comicbook-to-bigscreen credits also include the "Hellboy" films. "It's one of the great untapped comicbooks from the '80s renaissance that also spawned "Watchmen" and "Batman: Dark Knight."

Levin will finance development and production of "Mage," which was previously in development at Spyglass with Zack Snyder attached to direct, before taking it to a studio partner for distribution.

"It's a great that Lloyd is taking on this material because his approach (to comicbooks) is to capture the essence of the original source material," said Wagner, who is the writer and illustrator of the property. "The timing is good, too, because in the past, (filmmakers) tried to fix the material. Now they try to adhere to the material."

Rachel Weisz The Deep Blue Sea

Rachel Weisz Has the Big O

She’s in advanced talks to play the wife in British director Terence Davies’ adaptation of the 1952 play The Deep Blue Sea, says the Daily Mail. Even today, Terrance Rattigan’s script feels like wrenching stuff. Rachel Weisz would play a woman who leaves her companionable husband when she becomes sexually enslaved by an alcoholic ex-fighter pilot. Although she’s 40, it’s the first time she’s ever had an orgasm. Having smashed up her marriage, she then sticks her head in a gas oven when her booze-addled boyfriend walks out on her.

Greta Scacchi played the part in a London stage revival a couple of years ago. Peggy Ashcroft, who originally played Hester Collyer opposite Kenneth More as her lover, complained the role made her feel as if she was walking around on stage naked. Rattigan wrote the play after an old boyfriend of his committed suicide.

I am not a fan of these film at all and the footage that was shown in this trailer didnt make me jump out of my seat at all. Which was developed and used by James Cameron in Avatar.

Inception Is On Top Again For Third Week

Inception Is On Top Again For Third Week

It looked like Dinner for Schmucks might actually be enough to topple the current box office champion, Inception. But by the end of play Sunday, Christopher Nolan’s Cobb and the team pulled off another victory to give the dream thieves a third week atop the charts in the States, Inception nabbing $27.5 million and the Schmucks running away with $23.3 million.

Salt slipped down to third place, taking $19.2 million, while Despicable Me stole $15.5 million for fourth.

But even the kiddie/3D cash boost factor couldn’t save Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, with the animal spies sequel bringing in just $12.5 million, which hopefully means this might be the end for the franchise. That said, given the nine-year wait between the first two, maybe we should be wary that, like a horror movie villain, another one could spring up in a decade.

Zac Efron won’t be too thrilled either: his latest stab at grown-up filmmaking respectability, weepy Charlie St Cloud, couldn’t even crack the top five, arriving in sixth with $12.1 million. The rest of the chart, meanwhile was filled with Toy Story 3 in seventh ($5 million), Grown Ups at eighth ($4.5 million), The Sorcerer’s Apprentice at ninth ($4.3 million) and Twilight: Eclipse bringing up the rear at 10th ($3.9 million).

Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall Plot Details

Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall Plot Details

Kick-Ass is set to hit DVD and Blu-ray on August 3rd.  Mark Millar stopped by movieweb for a chat. While discussing the film, he told us in detail where Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall is headed.

Spoiler Alert:

Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall begins with Hit Girl living with her newly adoptive father, who used to be Big Daddy's ex-partner on the police force. She has retired her guns and is no longer killing people. Meanwhile, Red Mist has hired a Russian Assassin to murder Hit Girl, while also assembling a group of super villains on-line who decide to hunt Kick-Ass down in a storyline that is similar to the one seen in The Warriors, which climaxes with a huge rumble in Times Square, where costumed heroes battle costumed villains to the death. Here is our conversation:

There has been a lot of talk about Kick-Ass 2. What is happening with that? And where would you like to see it go?

Mark Millar: I am writing the comic book right now. Matthew Vaughn is directing X-Men: First Class, which he will be doing until about April. I will have finished writing the new comic by Christmas. Then, in April, we will begin working on Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.

What direction are you taking the characters in the comic book, and how will that affect the film sequel? Especially with a character like Hit Girl. Chloe Moretz is growing pretty fast, and she has already outgrown her costume...

Mark Millar: The film and the comic book are very closely tied together. There are only a few minor changes towards the end. It does led directly into a sequel, and I am writing the sequel as I always planned it to be. The actors may be a little bit older, or bigger. They can address that in the movie. But I am not changing anything for the comic book. We left things off with her being adopted by this extremely nice man. He is a cop. And she has to stop killing people, you know? That seems like an interesting starting point in the next one in regards to her character. She is going to be like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, where she hasn't picked up a gun in years. It's that type of thing. I like the idea of doing that with an eleven year old girl. She was part of this massive cacophony of violence. But she's not allowed to kill people anymore. She is consumed with anger, and forced to watch TV shows instead. Halfway through the movie, or the comic, we will follow her as she picks up a gun again. It is going to be awesome.

And what about Red Mist? The character has a good heart, he's very empathetic, yet he's the villain in the sequel. How is that going to play out, especially in regards to the way he is written in the comic as opposed to the way Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays him on screen?

Mark Millar: This is a guy who has had his entire family killed by Hit Girl. He heads off and develops his martial arts skills. He learns how to become a better villain. That type of thing. He is going to come back and wreck unholy vengeance on our team. But in reality, he just comes back and gets stoned, and he spends a lot of money. He can't do anything, so he hires this bad ass girl from Russia, she comes into the story, and her plan is to kill Hit Girl. Red Mist becomes like Charles Manson. He goes on-line and influences a bunch of young villains to go against Kick-Ass and Hit Girl. The whole thing ends up as a big gang fight like you'd see in The Warriors. There is going to be a big gang fight in the middle of Times Square between all of these costumed heroes. And at the head will be the Red Mist and Hit Girl.
