Rachel Nichols Joins The Ten O'Clock People

Rachel Nichols is in negotiations to join Justin Long in Stephen King's The Ten O'Clock People.

The adaptation of King's short story, first published in Nightmares and Dreamscapes in 1993, is being directed by Tom Holland. Holland, a 1980s horror maven who wrote and directed Fright Night and Child's Play, previously tackled King’s Thinner and The Langoliers.

The story centers on a man who, when attempting to kick his smoking habit, has his eyes opened to a frightening reality in which many people in authority are monsters. He joins a group of others like him called the Ten O’Clock People.

Nichols would play a woman who, like the man, can see a horrible aspect of reality, hidden in plain sight.
Nathaniel Kramer and E.J. Meyers are producing.

Nichols, played Scarlett in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and was the female lead in last year’s Conan the Barbarian.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Easter Eggs. Did You Catch Any Of These?

When we go to the movie we all expect some form of Easter Eggs in the films that we see. Normally in Marvel films there are plenty of them. And now Christopher Nolan has stepped up to the plate with his own in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

cinemablend went above and beyond the call finding these Easter Eggs in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

One of the greatest things about Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is that it’s clear that the director is a real Batman fan. Over the course of his three films, Nolan paid tribute to some of the greatest Caped Crusader stories ever written, including Alan Moore’s “The Killing Joke,” Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One,” Joseph Loeb and Tim Sale’s “The Long Halloween” and, most recently, Doug Moench and Chuck Dixon’s “Knightfall.” But for obvious reasons the filmmaker wasn’t able to stick the entirety of the Batman universe into the series, so he did the next best thing: he littered his movies with easter eggs.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Movie Review-

Below cinemablend plucked out seven of my favorite bonuses that Nolan left for fans in his movies, including hints about characters like Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Victor Zsasz and more. Check out my detailed descriptions below.

Victor Zsasz
Zsasz is one of Batman’s most horrifying villains. The man is a dangerous serial killer who is best known for carving a tally mark into his skin whenever he takes another victim. While we never actually get to see Zsasz in action – which is probably a good thing – he is still very much part of The Dark Knight Trilogy. In Nolan’s Batman Begins, we first see the murderer as he is sentenced to a term in Arkham Asylum, as he was working as one of Carmine Falcone’s thugs, but that’s not the last we see of him. When Ra’s al Ghul frees all of the prisoners from Arkham later in the film, Zsasz can be seen exiting his cell and turning his head down the hallway to see if anyone is going to stop him from escaping. While the character is never named, if you look closely at the prisoner’s neck in the latter scene you can clearly see tally marks on his neck, indicating that he’s killed at least 15 people. Creepy.

Two-Face
Towards the end of Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne has found himself in a very desperate situation. He has learned that not only is Ra’s al Ghul still alive, but that the League of Shadows leader has made his way to Gotham with the intention of tearing the city apart – but first thing’s first, he needs to get all of the people out of Wayne Manor. And the best way to do that? By giving an insulting, drunken speech, of course! First accusing all of the socialites in the room of coming with the intention of drinking all of the host’s booze, Bruce uses a very particular insult towards the crowd, calling them all “two-faced friends.” This, of course, would eventually be seen as a hint by Nolan that he would be using the legendary Harvey Dent as a villain in the sequel.

But that’s not the only fun easter egg in Nolan’s trilogy about Two-Face. In an early scene in The Dark Knight, Harvey Dent is questioning a witness about the crimes of Sal Maroni and suddenly finds himself staring down the barrel of a gun that, fortunately, misfires. This was Nolan’s fun little way of playing with Two-Face’s origin story from the comics, where Dent was horribly scarred when Maroni, while sitting on the bench, threw a bottle of acid into the district attorney’s face. The director would give the villain a new origin later in the movie, but this was a nice little gift for the long-time readers.

Catwoman
Much like the Two-Face easter egg in Batman Begins, the Catwoman easter egg in The Dark Knight was interpreted by fans as being an indication that the character would turn up in the sequel, and boy were they right. The hidden gem comes when Bruce Wayne is meeting up with Lucius Fox for the first time in the sequel and asks about what improvements can be made to the suit following a vicious dog attack. While the armored suit may not stand up against Rottweilers, Fox tells him that he can be sure that it, “Should do fine against cats.” As many predicted, this did end up being foreshadowing for the finale of the trilogy, as Selina Kyle would arrive in Gotham for the battle against Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

Mr. Freeze
It would have been really hard for Christopher Nolan to place a villain like Mr. Freeze into his Dark Knight Rises trilogy. The director worked hard to established a certain level of reality to his superhero films, making the audience feel like some of the events in the movies could actually happen, so the idea of having a villain who uses a freeze gun was seen as being a bit too much. But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t willing to give Batman fans a little hint of the character. In The Dark Knight Rises, Bruce Wayne finally leaves Wayne Manor after locking himself away like Howard Hughes and goes down to visit Lucius Fox at Wayne Enterprises, a visit that inspires Fox to say something along the lines of, “So you've come out of your cryo-sleep.” This could very well be a hint at the cold loving Victor Fries, who puts his wife in cryo-sleep in the comics so that he can have more time to figure out the cure to the disease that’s killing her.

Killer Croc
At the beginning of The Dark Knight Rises, bad things are afoot in the sewer system of Gotham. After trying to find those responsible for the abduction of a congressional representative, Commissioner Gordon finds himself trapped below the streets of Gotham and face-to-face with the supervillain known as Bane. While he manages to escape with his life – and a few new bullet holes – unfortunately people aren’t too quick to believe his story about the forthcoming danger. When John Blake attempts to start an investigation based on what Gordon saw in the tunnels, he is scoffed at and asked if knew anything about giant alligators in the sewer system as well. If you heard people chuckling at this line in the theater, it’s because it may be a reference to Killer Croc, Batman’s humungous, reptile-like villain who likes to spend time in Gotham’s sewers. Perhaps Bane took a page out of his book?

Clayface
What’s interesting about Nolan’s reference to Clayface in The Dark Knight Rises is that it actually takes from Batman: The Animated Series rather than the comics. In the 90s show, Roland Daggett is the owner of a company that produces a new face cream called Renuyu, which gives the user the ability to modify their face. While the cream wouldn’t be allowed to sell in stores due to its addictive qualities, Daggett gives it to an actor named Matt Hagen for use in a series of crimes, eventually leading to Hagen becoming the villain known as Clayface. While this doesn’t happen in the final Batman movie, and the character is renamed “John,” Nolan does have Daggett appear as a corporate rival of Wayne’s who hires Bane to take Gotham’s most famous citizen down a few pegs. Much like in the animated series, Daggett’s plans don’t exactly turn out as well as he planned…

THE WATCH Movie Review By: MattInRC

THE WATCH Movie Review
By: MattInRC

Does the Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn/Jonah Hill bro-fest THE WATCH inspire laughter or demands for your money back?

THE WATCH is the kind of film which mirrors the times in which we live: it's gross, raunchy, and even a bit degrading at points. Yes, I'm saying society has become dependent on these facets to get anyone's attention. Add any other adjective/adverb that Google will spit out if you wish to complete the experience. The problem has been that Hollywood hasn't consistently come up with truly funny raunch, giving us 3-4 terrible efforts for every Hangover or Ted. The transition to this new lower-brow form of entertainment has not been without its bumps. Luckily THE WATCH doesn't fall into the abyss of terrible mishaps; instead, it's a hilarious romp through the world of alien invasions, low sperm counts, male genitalia, and underage drinking. Ok, that doesn't sound as appealing as I write this, but follow me on this one.

Evan (Ben Stiller, There's Something About Mary) is the manager of a Wisconsin Costco; an organizer of various social clubs, his life is boring, predictable, and he likes it that way. All of that changes when his night guard is murdered, inspiring Evan to announce the formation of a neighborhood watch to find the killer. Instead of landing a few organized volunteers ready to lend a hand, he gets the party animal Bob (Vince Vaughn, Swingers), the head case Franklin (Jonah Hill, Superbad), and the fashionable Brit Jamarcus (newcomer Richard Ayoade). The guys are more ready to bro it up than fight crime, and Evan can't control their hi-jinks. It's not until the team comes face to face with the killer (who happens to be an alien) that they learn about a world-wide invasion that will soon destroy the Earth, if a communications array being assembled underneath Evan's Costco isn't put out of commission. Together with his wife Abby (Rosmarie DeWitt, United States of Tara), Evan and his crew try to save the world, all while dodging alien goo, half-eaten corpses, and Franklin's fascination with underage girls.

The writing team of Jared Stern, actor Seth Rogan, and Evan Goldberg have created a ridiculous but ultimately humorous premise that also allows for Vaughn and Stiller to ad-lib often, creating some of the movie's funniest moments. There's just enough cheesy dramatics to offset the raunch-fest of alien genetalia and homosexual suggestions which permeate the script. Yet unlike other failed comedies this year, THE WATCH pushes just enough buttons to cause laughter (albeit based on gross premises) without crossing the lines which That's My Boy didn't realize existed. Vaughn has basically played the same character since Mr. and Mrs.Smith, sometimes with less-than-expected results. Not here: Vaughn is back to his Wedding Crashers form, strutting for the fans like a peacock in search of a mate. Stiller plays a terrific deadpan to Vaughn's antics, and both Hill and Ayoade fire off several hilarious moments of their own. Even the casting of an uncredited Billy Crudup (Watchmen) as Evan's new weird neighbor pays off as the team learns that this alien suspect is actually running a large orgy in his basement. Agreed, the suspension of belief one must undertake to enjoy The Watch is high, but the payoff for doing should reward audiences. Director Akiva Schaffer (SNL's The Lonely Island) squeezes every bit of pulp from the script while still allowing his actors the ability to stray off course a little for the sake of the many laughs he and writers have concocted. He also employs some funny Matrix-like edits near the end of the film, as well as many other gags which gladly don't appear in the trailers.

This is the fifth movie for Stiller and Vaughn, and with Schaffer and Hill joining the fray, this could spell good fortune for those of us who enjoy well-constructed dirty humor films. This team is fun to watch and the subject matter just preposterous enough to set an early tone. THE WATCH doesn't take itself too seriously, and nor should audiences. Even with the filters off it still might offend, but I guarantee you'll laugh along the way. In a year that's seen its share of truly terrible over the top films, THE WATCH proves you can make a raunchy film without sending society over the edge. THE WATCH is rated R for almost everything but nudity and has a runtime of 98 minutes.

A PLACE AT THE TABLE Acquired By Magnolia Pictures

The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired US rights to A PLACE AT THE TABLE, a powerful documentary from Participant Media and co-directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush about the hunger crisis in America. Featuring Jeff Bridges and Tom Colicchio, with music by T Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars, the film debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival with the title “Finding North.” It was produced by Jacobson and Silverbush, along with Julie Goldman and Ryan Harrington. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Christina Weiss Lurie, Jeffrey Lurie and Colicchio served as executive producers.

Magnolia and Participant previously collaborated on the very successful FOOD, INC, a film that affected real positive change by asking audiences to think about the quality and source of the food that they eat. A PLACE AT THE TABLE takes on the food issue from a new angle, shining a light on the 30% of American families—more than 49 million people—that don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Jeff Bridges asks in the film: “Do you envision America as a country where one in four of the kids are hungry?" A PLACE AT THE TABLE asks tough questions about the hunger crisis, and provides answers of how we can affect real change, putting human faces on the issue with colorful and engaging portraits of real American families that are struggling to put food on the table.

“Beyond being powerful, moving, and a real call to action for change, A PLACE IN THE TABLE is an incredibly well made, cinematic and entertaining film,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “It’s a great companion film to FOOD, INC, and we’re very happy to be working with our friends at Participant again.”

Participant Media CEO Jim Berk said, "We are thrilled to be joining once again with the great Magnolia team to bring A PLACE AT THE TABLE to U.S. audiences along with what will be a rich and muscular Social Action campaign to provide them with opportunities to create real impact."

PublicAffairs, publisher of The New York Times Best-selling companion book to FOOD, INC, is readying a Participant Guide to A PLACE AT THE TABLE for delivery to bookstores this December.

A PLACE AT THE TABLE will be released theatrically in the first quarter of 2013. The deal was done by Magnolia SVP of Acquisitions Dori Begley with Josh Braun of Submarine.

Director Talks A Good Day To Die Hard

Empire got the chance to talk to John Moore who is the director of the upcoming fifth Die Hard movie, A Good Day To Die Hard.

The plot of the fivequel - if you're comfortable using the term - sees Bruce Willis' John McClane facing off against angry Russian foes after his son, Jack (newcomer Jai Courtney), gets himself into some "serious international trouble" in Moscow.

Many fans of the franchise will be concerned about the idea of another sequel, but Moore - who's previously directed Max Payne and the 2006 remake of The Omen - is aware of the anxious question mark hanging over the film.

What's more, he's also keen to downplay idea that the fifth Die Hard could be a light-hearted romp - this is a Die Hard movie, pure and simple. In other words, no glib jokes then? No "How can the same shit happen to the same guy five times..." lines?

"No, because that’s preposterous! I don’t know whether it’s post-financial crash or whatever, but I don’t think people are in the mood for that bollocks anymore. People are well savvy to the cynical reheating of any product, any franchise. Any shit won’t do. The bar’s a bit higher."

But what about the fish-out-of-water element, with McClane in Moscow?

"There are a couple of great gags and a couple of great McClanisms. It’s not like he this idiot, bumbling around Moscow making ‘America won the Cold War’ jokes. It’s not Carry On Die Hard, I can assure you…"

And what about the scale of the movie? So far, each Die Hard has been bigger than the one before…

"The scope along goes from New York to Moscow. It’s very, very international. There’s a car chase through Moscow that’s taking us 78 days to shoot. So… yeah. That should answer your question!"

IN THEATERS AUGUST 3

Win your tickets to see an advance screening of  TOTAL RECALL! We have passes to the special advance screening on Aug 2, 2012 at 7:00 PM in Sacramento.

TOTAL RECALL is an upcoming 2012 American science fiction action film remake of the 1990 film of the same name, which is based on the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Unlike the original 1990 film, the plot of this new version lacks a trip to Mars and contains strong political overtones. In addition, the film also blends Western and Eastern influences together, due to the fact that the two nation states, New Shanghai and Euroamerica are battling for political power.

It is directed by Len Wiseman, written by Mark Bomback, James Vanderbilt, and Kurt Wimmer, starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho, and Bill Nighy.

In a futuristic political setting of 2084, after being devastated by war, Earth is divided into two superpowers, Euroamerica/Western Hemisphere and New Shanghai/Eastern Hemisphere, who are locked in a battle for supremacy. In this world lives Doug Quaid (Colin Farrell), a factory worker suffering from violent nightmares. Dissatisfied with lowly existence, Quaid visits Rekall, a corporation that provides its clients with implanted artificial memories of the lives they would like to have. McClane (John Cho), a Rekall representative, finds that Quaid has already had his memory erased and demands to know why Quaid has come to Rekall. Armed men shoot and kill McClane and other Rekall employees before Quaid kills them. He returns home to his wife Lori (Kate Beckinsale) who, after trying to kill him, reveals that he really is a secret agent and she is not really his wife.

Cloud Atlas First 6 Minutes Is Live

You have seen the first image from Cloud Atlas starring Tom Hanks & Halle Berry, now we have the first 6 minutes of the film.

Andy and Lana Wachowski (the Matrix trilogy) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) co-wrote and co-directed this adaptation of David Mitchell’s 2004 novel Cloud Atlas (out in theaters Oct. 26). As if that weren’t complicated enough, each cast member plays multiple roles in the film’s kaleidoscopic tale, which includes a sci-fi story of a man (Tom Hanks) who meets an emissary from an advanced civilization (Halle Berry), and a darkly comic yarn about a composer (Jim Broadbent) and his apprentice (Ben Whishaw). “We thought about these individual characters as aspects of larger characters,” Lana Wachowski says. “Their lives are interwoven over one big story that takes place over a thousand years.”

Early Winter Swells Anticipated for Mavericks Invitational Organizers Announce Partnership with the Big Wave World Tour.

Looking ahead to an El Niño winter and the anticipation of big waves early in the season, the organizers of the Mavericks Invitational big wave surf contest are opening the contest season on November 1, 2012.

Following the approval of the permit by the San Mateo County Harbor District last week, the organizers kicked into high gear the planning for this year?s famed big wave surfing contest off Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay. The contest waiting period is officially November 1, 2012, through March 31, 2013.

It looks like we're headed for an early winter, and we want to take advantage of the big swells in November, said Mavericks Pioneer Jeff Clark, part of a group of business and community leaders organizing the event. The surfers are ready, the community is ready, and we are stoked to make this amazing event happen this year.

Mavericks Invitational organizers are also announcing a partnership with the Big Wave World Tour. Founded by famed big wave rider and shaper, Gary Linden, the Big Wave World Tour (BWWT), is an international surfing phenomenon that organizes the best big wave riders in the first-ever big wave surfing league. The tour showcases the world's top surfers and local standouts as they battle extreme conditions, and each other, in a season long battle to become the next Big Wave World Champion. The tour includes events in Chile, Peru, Mexico, and now in California.

"Big wave surfing and Mavericks have become synonymous, and a competition there a dream come true, said Linden, who has served as head judge for previous contests at Mavericks. Being part of the event is an extreme honor, personally and for the Big Wave World Tour.

The association with BWWT allows those surfers who are part of the tour to use their performance at Mavericks as part of their overall scoring for the season. The list of competitors for this year's Mavericks Invitational will not change from last season, when a lackluster winter dashed hopes for a contest.

The competitors will still earn their way through dedication to surfing Mavericks, proving their mettle at Mavericks, and being voted into the event by their peers, said Clark. Gary Linden has experience at Mavericks, making it easy to integrate their judging system and water patrol into our event, while keeping true to the unique nature of Mavericks.

Mavericks Invitational is the world's premier, high adrenaline, big wave surfing event. This one- day, invitation-only surfing competition is held at the legendary Mavericks surf break located 12 mile offshore at Pillar Point Harbor, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The 24 most daring big-wave surfers in the world will attempt to tame the massive swells on the biggest and best day of the 2012 winter season. The Hobbit To Be Made Into A Trilogy?

Peter Jackson is looking to return to Middle Earth yet again.

Sources close to the production of The Hobbit say the filmmaker has concluded that he wants to turn his upcoming two-film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien epic into a trilogy. That would require additional shooting that sources say could take place next summer for about two months in New Zealand.

Jackson teased the idea at Comic-Con on July 14, telling fans that he wants to shoot more footage. But since then, sources say that studio Warner Bros., Jackson, producer Fran Walsh and writer-producer Philippa Boyens began exploring the logistics of what it would take to make another movie. Those talks are said to have accelerated in recent days, with the studio on board if the right financial arrangements can be achieved. That includes securing new actor deals for the expansive cast as well as shoring up certain rights associated with the property (The Hobbit has a long a tortured rights history.)

“If we’re going to do it, we have to make a decision soon," says a source close to the production. "It’s strongly driven by the filmmakers’ desire to tell more of the story.”

The first installment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is set for release on Dec. 14. The second film, called There and Back Again, is set to hit theaters on Dec. 13, 2013. A third film would presumably follow in 2014, much the same way the films in Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy unspooled over three consecutive years.

“It’s about taking the chance to tell more of the incredible tale with the cast we have assembled," says a source.

Cloud Atlas First Look Starring Tom Hanks & Halle Berry

EW got their hands on the first look for the upcoming film Cloud Atlas.

Vince Vaughn Is The Risk Agent

Wild West Picture Show Productions has used its discretionary fund to acquire the Ridley Pearson novel The Risk Agent. It will be developed as a star vehicle for Vince Vaughn, who’ll produce with his Wild West cohorts Victoria Vaughn and Sandra J. Smith. They’ve already set Michael Lerner to write the script. The book was published last month by Putnam.

The project will be developed for Universal, where Vaughn has his producing deal. It’s a departure for the actor, a thriller that is set in China. When a Chinese National working for an American-owned construction company is grabbed off the streets of Shanghai in broad daylight and his one-man security detail goes missing as well, the call goes out to Rutherford Risk. That firm specializes in hostage extraction, from negotiation to recovery. Since private investigation is illegal in China, the company recruits two experts. One, Grace Chu, is a female forensic accountant who follows the money; the other, John Knox, is well trained in both combat and culture. They overcome their differing styles to try and get the hostages back before it’s too late. CAA brought the book to Wild West and made the deal.

The Hobbit Visits Comic-Con

If you weren’t lucky enough to be sitting in the packed Hall H at this year’s Comic-Con to witness Peter Jackson and co unveiling new footage from The Hobbit, the director is ready to dry your tears with the latest video production blog. Prepare to take a trip to San Diego with Jackson, and to get a look at some of what they showed at the event, by watching the video below…

The latest video blog is yet another treat featuring, amongst other things, Sylvester McCoy as his legendarily eccentric self (including playing the spoons on every available surface and person) and Martin Freeman using the large-scale Bag End set as the jumping off point for his take on the Dennis Waterman spoof from Little Britain (“Write the feme tune, sing the feme tune”).

Plus you get a Jackson’s eye view of the San Diego madness, some brief glimpses of new footage and yet another emotional ride packed with peeks at the crew and work, not to mention Andy Serkis in a barrel. Oh, and the wrap party following the final few shots.

Thank goodness there are more videos to come, featuring a look at the second movie and the post-production process for both, or else we’d be in the midst of serious withdrawal problems…

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arrives on December 14.
