Movie Review: #GhostInTheShell

The competent but unremarkable Ghost in the Shell is nothing you haven't seen before.

Review by Matt Cummings

At what point do all movies feel like you've seen them before? When I look at some of my fellow reviewer colleagues, I see their fatigue on display and with good reason. In their decades-long evaluation of cinema, they've seen better versions of every film in theaters right now, including Director Rupert Sanders' big screen American adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, a competent but all-too-familiar Frankenstein of every important Sci-Fi film of the past 30 years.

Set in a dystopian future in which everyone seems plugged into the Internet with enhancements, Ghost in the Shell introduces us to Major (Scarlett Johansson), a humanoid whose brain is real but whose body is totally synthetic. This gives Major incredible strength and intelligence, as demonstrated by the film's first ass-kicking sequence. Her boss Armaki (Takeshi Kitano) has surrounded her with an elite team that includes the bruiser Batou (Pilou Asbæk) and Han (Chin Han). But that might not be enough as Major's greatest challenge arrives in the terrorist Kuze (Michael Pitt), who's determined to destroy Hanka Robotics and Major's team. But she's got other problems as well, including a powerful memory from her past that randomly appears in her data stream, which eventually leads her straight to Kuze. Faced with a stunning revelation, Major must decide if her bosses - including the slimy Cutter (Peter Ferdinando) and her creator Dr. Ouelet (Juliette Binoche) - can be trusted, just as Kuze's reign of terror leads right at Major's feet.

If that plot summary sounds vaguely familiar, it's because Ghost in the Shell is a derivative of at least 5 films: Blade Runner, Robo Cop, The Matrix, Speed Racer, and Tron: Legacy. That's not uncommon these days (see Hell or High Water or The Nice Guys), but add in a paint-by-the-numbers bad guy and this mixture is just merely competent, not screwing things up but not exactly hitting it out of the park either.

There are plenty of things to like about Ghost in the Shell: it paints a gorgeous picture of a future filled with enhanced human beings, surrounded by massive structures and billboard advertisements. Its heartbeat pulses to a good score by Composers Clint Mansel and Lorne Balfe, pushing out the sequenced keyboards like he owns the place. The costumes and set decoration are also very good, but you'll feel like Rick Deckard should emerge from the shadows on his way to wasting another Replicant, or Speed Racer's Mach 5 should come tearing down these streets of Hong Kong. There's so direct suggestion here by Director Rupert Sanders that either of these worlds is a part of Ghost, but does everything he can to nudge us in those directions.

Sanders has always had a good eye: with Ghost in the Shell, he proves that he can navigate the Medieval world of Snow White and The Huntsman just as well as Major's, planting his feet firm and even doubling down on his vision. But what we get isn't remarkable or unique in the slightest, and that won't play well with its key demos: anime fans who are used to see big things from their genre. Ghost in the Shell has some of that, but it's unlikely they'll walk away feeling like they've been done right.

Part of that lies in the film's casting, which again is competent but spends too long with Major. Having never seen the series or the 1995 film, I can't quite relate but can tell you this is all Major with her team playing a distant role. The only one who gets even moderately close is Asbæk: his relationship to Major is the closest thing she has to a work husband, but that isn't the best thing about his appearance. I kept gawking at Asbæk because he looks like he's auditioning for Fox's upcoming Cable movie. But Sanders doesn't exactly gift Batou with impressive credentials. The same goes for Han, although Kitano emerges as a boss bad ass near film's end. Pitt is interesting for a time as Kuze, but there's just not enough time with him and Major for us to give a damn about what happens. His Max Headroom stuttering is kind of cool - making him a sort of defective - but his menace quickly cools into wanna-be sympathetic bad guy.

Part of Ghost in the Shell's problems started way back when Sanders cast Johansson, effectively white-washing what should have been a role offered to an Asian actress. It's likely that the studio balked at this because they couldn't guarantee a box office draw with a relative unknown. And while Johansson is quite good as Major - and even looks somewhat like her - the fact that we didn't get a proper female for this role will plague Johansson's portrayal. Based on her performance, I hope that Marvel will rethink their decision to not produce her in a standalone Black Widow movie, because she creates about the same aura for Major and largely succeeds. It's also likely that male audiences will absolutely forget about this controversy once they see Johansson naked, nearly naked, and donning clothing so tight that she might as well be naked. In some ways it deprives the movie of its soul, objectifying her rather than creating a conflicted assassin whom which we can empathize. Sure, that's the nature of anime, but it can also ring hollow with audiences who these days might want more from their female leads.

If the exuberance of our test audience prior to the showing - and then the smattering of applause by the same group afterwards - tells you anything it's that Ghost in the Shell faces an uphill battle at the box office. Beautifully sculpted and scored, it's also a Frankensteined affair of at least 5 movies that you'll easily pick out once things get going. Most characters are submerged in a hail of gunfire and the story fails to ask the big questions about existence that Blade Runner achieved so elegantly. But you also might enjoy this mixture for what it is: a big, action-oriented Sci-Fi flick that tries to be great at lots of things but only manages to not screw them up.

Ghost in the Shell is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, suggestive content and some disturbing images and has a runtime of 107 minutes.

Joss Whedon To Direct Batgirl Film

Variety is reporting Batgirl is flying solo. The superheroine is getting her own standalone movie from filmmaker Joss Whedon.

Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.

No other producers are currently attached. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. The new project originated in the past month.

Batgirl is one of the most popular superheroes in the world, but has never gotten her own movie. The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham.

Batgirl first appeared in DC Comics in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon in “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!” by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

The Batgirl project will be the second movie from DC Films to star a female lead after Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” which opens June 2. Extensive footage of the film was shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.

Whedon would be making a big move from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its DC counterpart, having written and directed “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for Disney-Marvel. He also created the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe launched with 2013’s “Man of Steel,” followed by last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad.” Its upcoming films, which have already been dated, include “Wonder Woman”; “Justice League,” debuting Nov. 17; and “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa and hitting theaters in December of 2018.

The studio is also developing a “Suicide Squad” sequel and “Gotham City Sirens,” a spinoff to “Suicide Squad” with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn character; “The Batman,” starring Ben Affleck with Matt Reeves directing; a “Shazam” film and a Black Adam spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson; and projects based on the Flash and Cyborg characters.

Read our review HERE-

A deeply atmospheric and terrifying new horror film, The Blackcoat’s Daughter centers on Kat (Kiernan Shipka) and Rose (Lucy Boynton), two girls who are left alone at their prep school Bramford over winter break when their parents mysteriously fail to pick them up. While the girls experience increasingly strange and creepy occurrences at the isolated school, we cross cut to another story—that of Joan (Emma Roberts), a troubled young woman on the road, who, for unknown reasons, is determined to get to Bramford as fast as she can. As Joan gets closer to the school, Kat becomes plagued by progressively intense and horrifying visions, with Rose doing her best to help her new friend as she slips further and further into the grasp of an unseen evil force. The movie suspensefully builds to the moment when the two stories will finally intersect, setting the stage for a shocking and unforgettable climax.

Movie Review: The Blackcoat’s Daughter

Horror film is a slow burn, but catches fire in places.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

At a Catholic boarding school in upstate New York, the student body is preparing for break, none moreso than Kat (Kiernan Shipka), who has taken to crossing out days on the calendar leading up to her parents’ arrival. But Kat’s parents never come, leaving her stuck at school for the break with only a couple of chaperones and an older student, Rose (Lucy Boynton), who has deliberately planned to stay put because she has recently learned that she is pregnant and wants to inform her boyfriend before having to break the news to mom and dad. Rose’s decision to stay on campus leads to her being tasked to look after Kat, who has a haunted air about her. Rose attempts to frighten Kat into submission by telling her a tall tale about the school’s nuns moonlighting as devil worshippers, yet it’s Rose who gets spooked when she finds that Kat not only sleepwalks, but is prone to unnatural bodily movement. Meanwhile, in a seemingly unrelated (initially) tangent, a troubled young woman named Joan (Emma Roberts) is picked up at a bus station by a kindly motorist (James Remar) and his less welcoming wife (Lauren Holly).

The Blackcoat’s Daughter, the directorial debut of Oz Perkins (son of Anthony), is very deliberately paced. One could even call it languid. There’s a great deal of dead air in the film, to mixed effect. The film also functions somewhere around the boundary separating dream logic from hard reality, where it often doesn’t make a lot of sense while never traversing fully into the realm of the surreal. It’s very difficult to get your bearings at times, since not only does Perkins fracture the timeline, but there’s also the matter of the resemblance between Roberts and Shipka (not unintentional, it turns out) occasionally making it tough to discern not only which story we’re following, but which character.

But the film is often a triumph of mood and tone, two essential weapons in horror. Perkins crafts a sense of foreboding throughout, where it feels like something dreadful is always about two seconds away from happening, even when it frequently doesn’t. The film is often disorienting—sometimes by design, sometimes frustratingly—but it does keep you largely in its thrall. The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a film poised on the thin line separating boring from spellbinding. It’s never entirely one or the other, but some curious blend of the two.

Though the film does position itself as a demonic-possession entry (right down to a climactic exorcism), it doesn’t fully commit to the conceit. In fact, the satanic element almost feels grafted onto a more purely psychological thriller (the less said about the demon’s resemblance owing a lot to Where the Wild Things Are, the better). The film that The Blackcoat’s Daughter most strongly evokes is Dario Argento’s giallo classic Suspiria, also concerning young girls at a prestigious school beset by violent occult chicanery. Because the film is so thoroughly drawn out, that does lend power to the moments when it does burst forth with shocking violence. When the film gets nasty, it has a real impact, but you can be forgiven if your mind wanders during the miasma of latency that so often defines it.

The cast is quite good, particularly Shipka, who exudes an unnerving aura from her first frame. Roberts also goes to some places that feel like fresh territory for her (I’m discounting Scream 4 as a precursor, since it wasn’t really effective at anything). There’s a lot of nothingness in The Blackcoat’s Daughter, but the moments of something that do present themselves are impressive. Perkins has not made a horror classic, but he has made an impression. That’s not nothing.

IT Official Teaser Trailer. Beware

When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

The story will be spread across two films.

New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “IT,” directed by Andrés Muschietti (“Mama”), is based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades.

When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.

“IT” stars Bill Skarsgård (“Allegiant,” TV’s “Hemlock Grove”) as the story’s central villain, Pennywise. An ensemble of young actors also star in the film, including Jaeden Lieberher (“Midnight Special”), Jeremy Ray Taylor (“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”), Sophia Lillis (“37”), Finn Wolfhard (TV’s “Stranger Things”), Wyatt Oleff (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Chosen Jacobs (upcoming “Cops and Robbers”), Jack Dylan Grazer (“Tales of Halloween”) and Nicholas Hamilton (“Captain Fantastic”).

Muschietti is directing “IT” from a screenplay adapted by Chase Palmer & Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman. Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg and Barbara Muschietti are producing, with Marty P. Ewing, Doug Davison and Jon Silk serving as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Chung-Hoon Chung (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”), production designer Claude Paré (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), editor Jason Ballantine (“The Great Gatsby”), and costume designer Janie Bryant (TV’s “Mad Men”).

A presentation of New Line Cinema, “IT” will be released worldwide beginning September 8, 2017, by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Entertainment Company.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 Announcement

Wreck-It Ralph is escaping out of his arcade and into the expansive universe of the internet next year when “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” hits the big screen. Dave Hollis, head of distribution for The Walt Disney Studios, revealed the much-anticipated sequel’s title and told CinemaCon attendees that Jane Lynch and Jack McBrayer would be returning to the roster.

Also returning are the team behind the original “Wreck-It Ralph,” who won an Oscar® last month for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ billion-dollar-box-office-blockbuster “Zootopia.” Directors Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and Phil Johnston (writer, “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia,” “Cedar Rapids”), and producer Clark Spencer (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Bolt”) are hard at work on the movie. “To take these characters we love and have them enter the enormous world of the internet has given us so much to explore,” said Moore. “Our production team has been hard at work designing a world that takes something we all think we know – the internet – but shows it in a whole new, imaginative way.”

Added Johnston, “We’re so excited to be working with Ralph, Vanellope von Schweetz, Fix-It Felix and Sergeant Calhoun again, and we have new characters we look forward to unveiling. At the center of this film, as in the first one, is the relationship between Ralph and Vanellope, two once-outcasts, who in each other, found true friendship.”

When “Wreck-It Ralph” opened on Nov. 2, 2012, it turned in the highest opening weekend ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film at the time of release. Nominated for an Oscar® and Golden Globe® for best animated feature, “Wreck-It Ralph” won the PGA Award for outstanding producer of an animated theatrical motion picture as well as five Annie Awards, including best animated feature, director, cast and screenplay. The film was named best animated feature by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, earned outstanding achievement in casting for an animated feature by the Casting Society of America, and won the Kids’ Choice Award for favorite animated movie.

“Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” hits U.S. theaters on March 9, 2018.

#WarForThePlanet OF THE APES Caesar Invades Vegas During @CinemaCon ‏

Caesar Invades Vegas and Takes Over Caesars Palace Las Vegas with a major show-stopping visual effect!

In anticipation of a brand new trailer launching tomorrow, projections of Caesar, the title character of WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES, and a special image created by Shepard Fairey in collaboration with Studio One took over Caesars Palace.

Famed contemporary street artist Shepard Fairey in collaboration with Studio One has created a stunning image which is being projected by twelve 35,000 lumen projectors with true 4k images all digitally mapped together to create one large image on the hotel. The final image is over 495’ wide and 261’ tall and required over a football field of cabling running from roof to roof at Caesars Palace Las Vegas. All of the lights on the Caesars Palace Augustus Tower will be turned off while the image is projected.

Shepard Fairey stated, “After reading Matt Reeves’s script, I was excited to work on art for WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES because the story presents a visceral but sophisticated dichotomy of dual perspectives on the struggle for survival. Unlike most films in which the audience immediately identifies with their fellow humans and the threat is from the “other,” this films asks questions about compassion, empathy, and other traits that we usually only associate with humans.”

The opening night reception will be held Friday, April 28 from 3:00 - 10:00pm, followed by a special "Mondo Clubhouse" Kids Party on Saturday, April 29, from 10am - Noon featuring Disney-inspired treats, face painting, photo booth, and other fun activities! Following these events, the show will run during regular gallery hours through May 13. Mondo Gallery is located at 4115 Guadalupe Street in Austin, TX.

"On our list of dream opportunities, hosting another Disney gallery show was always near the top," said Mondo Co-Founder and Creative Director Mitch Putnam. "Luckily, Cyclops came through and granted our wish. This time around, we've got some new artists in the mix, some new titles, and overall, just a different vibe from the first show. We can't wait for you to see what we've put together. It's pretty special."

Featuring the work of more than 25 of Mondo's most renowned artists taking on their favorite Disney films, "Mondo x Cyclops Print Works Present Never Grow Up: A Disney Art Show" invites fans of all ages to explore exciting new interpretations of Disney's beloved classic and modern masterpieces.

Artists Jonathan Burton, Matt Taylor, and Ken Taylor commented on their pieces in the show:

"I think that 101 DALMATIANS is the most beautiful of the Disney films, principally as it was the first time they used the artists' original line drawings in the final cells through the process of the copy machine," said artist Jonathan Burton. "The line work is sketchy, the color misaligned and it makes for a style full of life. My poster pays tribute to this, and in particular the rough production drawings of Disney's Ken Anderson who himself was inspired by Ronald Searle."

"I think ALADDIN is peak modern Disney, so having the chance to do my own take on it is pretty much a dream project," said artist Matt Taylor. "I wanted to try and incorporate some classical Arabian styling and decoration into the piece, but I think the most enjoyable part was getting to draw that Genie busting out of the lamp. The first Mondo/Disney show was one of my all time favorites that they have thrown, and I'd been hoping that they'd go back to the well. I've got one wish granted now, better figure out what to do with the other two..."

"Watching a Disney movie together with my kids is amazing, but making artwork for one of their favorite films takes it to the next level," said artist Ken Taylor. "BIG HERO 6 is my eldest daughters favorite, and I love so much about this film. The story is super fun but its the city that gets me in - the opportunity to draw San Fransokyo has been a blast and one of the best film poster experiences i have had. Hopefully folks dig it as much as I do."
