Movie Review: 'Warcraft'

Warcraft takes on too much and delivers too little on its way to clouding the future of the video game movie genre. Review by Matt Cummings One might look at the 2016 Summer movie slate and equate it to a bag of feces set afire at your front door. In reality, such childish pranks might be all that's left when the season is done, underlying a growing concern in which the real stakes faced by Hollywood feel higher than normal. Recent releases have been reeling from an assault of soft openings, poor critic reviews, and a general sense that sequelitis is producing films that audiences don't want. Warcraft does little to stem that feeling of dread, cramming in too much story and setting forth some of the worst casting in recent memory. The result both muddies the future of the genre and the chances for this franchise to carry on. Warcraft is told from two perspectives - the orcs and humans - as each prepares to fight the other, while coming to question their roles

#Warcraft : The Beginning Official Poster

If there’s one thing Warcraft is known for in its virtual form, it’s expansion. So it somehow makes sense that the film based on the game is also undergoing a little escalating, at least in its title. The evidence is for all to see, as the newly-named Warcraft: The Beginning has launched a fresh poster. Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones is putting the finishing touches to the film, which promises to show both sides of the story set in the seemingly peaceful realm of Azeroth, poised to descend into bitter war between man and orc when a portal opens between their two worlds. We’ll meet the likes of battle-hardened warrior Anduin Lothar ( Travis Fimmel ), the commander of the human forces and champion of his king, Llane Wrynn ( Dominic Cooper ). But as opposed to the usual faceless hordes of monsters attacking them, we’ll also check in with the Orcs, who arrive because they’re fleeing the destruction of their own home world, and are led by Durotan ( Toby Kebbell ). First Image From Duncan Jones’s #Warcraft

The world at large has been waiting a long time for a proper gander at Duncan Jones’s Warcraft movie. Despite a first look at Comic-Con last year, and logos and props on display, the characters have been tantalisingly out of reach. Until now, that is, with Wired magazine debuting images of orc warchief Orgrim Doomhammer played in the movie by Robert Kazinsky. See all the images after the Jump... Part of the reason Jones and his team have held back on footage is that the effects wizards at Industrial Light And Magic are still busy turning raw footage of performance-capture work, concept art and empty scene plates into shots of marauding armies and quieter character moments. As for Orgrim, he certainly has the right look, and manages to effectively blend some realism with the Warcraft games' slighly caricatured aesthetic. Jones explained why he picked Kazinsky to play the multi-faceted creature: “We were looking for someone who would be able to perform the gruffne

New Concept Art For The Warcraft Film

This weekend was the annual Blizzcon event , which lets fans of Warcraft, StarCraft and other Blizzard Entertainment titles come together to swap stories, ogle new product and be shown presentations of upcoming games and expansions. With the Warcraft movie now on track for 2015, director Duncan Jones took time out from pre-production to hit Los Angeles and introduce some new concept art for the movie version and discuss his ideas. Talking about the script to an audience that included reporters from gaming site Kotaku, Jones explained that he wanted to bring balance to a screenplay that was, at first, very human-centric. "It's about both sides. It's going to be red and blue." See all the images after the Jump... Jones had also brought along some of his crew, including special effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer (a confirmed fan of the game), who explained that the majority of the Orcs will be created using actors in makeup instead of CGI, with swords alr

Paula Patton & Colin Farrell Eyeing For Warcraft Film

If you follow Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones on Twitter , you know that A) he likes a giggle and B) is preparing to kick off production work on his biggest job yet – adapting Blizzard’s sprawling MMORPG Warcraft into a film. He’s deep into casting now and is apparently considering Paula Patton and Colin Farrell for two of the leads. Patton’s deal is said to be further along – she’s actually negotiating – while Farrell is still umm-ing and ahh-ing about whether he wants to take part so it could go either way. Jones is hunting for other cast members and no doubt has a back up list for Farrell’s role if he doesn’t sign on. The plot for the film, written by Blood Diamond’s Charles Leavitt, is still largely under wraps, though since Warcraft’s world involves all manner of medieval battles between the likes of dragons, werewolves, elves, wizards and warriors, there’s scope for something epic here. The director wowed the crowed with what he called a "mood piece

Duncan Jones To Direct Warcraft Film

Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing for Legendary along with Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner. Taking an almost kitchen-sink approach to fantasy, Warcraft , which has grown to be one of the most popular multiplayer online role-playing games out there, is part fantasy, part science fiction and — depending on the game you’re playing — includes elements such as dragons and orcs, zombies and werewolves, and aliens and spaceships. Legendary is keeping its script, written by Charles Leavitt, under wraps. The Warner Bros.-based production and finance outfit is eyeing a fall 2013 start and a 2015 release. Jones’ producing partner, Stuart Fenegan, will executive prod
