Confirmed! J.J. ABRAMS To Direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

STAR WARS IS BEING KICK-STARTED WITH DYNAMITE J.J. ABRAMS TO DIRECT STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.

After a bevy of emails and phone calls, the formalities have been wrapped up, and at long last everyone can exhale and properly share the word with an excited Internet. Yes, J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.

"It's very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie," said Kennedy. "J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture."

George Lucas went on to say "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller." He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."11 "To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor," J.J. Abrams said. "I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."

J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner."

Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year's Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm's preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

RED DAWN Blu-Ray Review. Holds Up Fairly Well...Sort Of

RED DAWN Blu-Ray Review
By: MattInRC

RED DAWN offers a good (but not great) video and audio experience in a film that holds up fairly well...sort of.

As an 80's child who grew up on television's first forays into quality spy thrillers like Airwolf and The Equalizer, I can remember the release of the original RED DAWN as more of a yawnfest than a gritty interpretation of a conventional World War III. At the time, I remember thinking that invasion was not only a possibility but a certainty; The Day After had been released in 1983, occupying my nightmares for a week. But, the film never connected with me for some reason - perhaps its happy ending didn't match my new perceptions of war in the nuclear age. To be honest, I've hadn't watched either film since their initial releases because of my impulsive reaction to them. But with the release of the disappointing remake, a revisiting of the original Red Dawn now on Blu-ray made it a little more timely, watchable, and even relatable...if you can get over the good (not great) transfer.

The Movie - 3/5

As the United States moves closer to isolationism, partly due to a majority of NATO countries bowing out, the Russians, Cubans, and Western European Communists stage a bold invasion of our country, transporting troops on fake commercial jetliners, posing as Mexican illegal immigrants, and even obliterating cities like Washington DC while staging more conventional campaigns against places like Calumet, Colorado. There, a local high school becomes the center of the conflict, as airborne soldiers quickly overtake the population, killing many and imprisoning the survivors in re-education camps. High school senior Jed Eckert (Patrick Swayze, Roadhouse) escapes with several younger students, including his brother Matt (Charlie Sheen) and their friend Robert (C. Thomas Howell). Matt and Jed soon learn that their father (Harry Dean Stanton) has been captured and will soon be executed, who orders them through a fence to avenge his imminent death. Together with several other children including Toni (Jennifer Grey) and Erica (Lea Thompson), Jed, Matt, and Daryl form The Wolverines, named for their HS mascot and begin to wreck havoc on local Soviet roadblocks and convoys.

Desiring to take the country in one piece rather than risking a deadly nuclear conflict, Russia has split the US into thirds. Calumet is in "Occupied America" as opposed to Free America, and the enemy soon pushes back on The Wolverines by executing prisoners in an attempt to force the rebels to hault their attacks. Undeterred, they discover the downed US Air Force Pilot Andrew Tanner (Powers Booth), who assists them in further crippling the enemy's control. but the kids are being led into a false sense of security, as Mother Russia unleashes the full measure of their military might against them. As Wolverine causalities begin to pile up, the core group executes a bold plan to liberate Danny and Erica to liberated territory, leaving Jed and Matt to fight a Russian colonel, who in the end cannot bring himself to kill the boys. Mortally wounded, the brothers retreat to a local park where they played as kids, determined to die on familiar ground. As the epilogue rolls, we learn that the US did eventually repel the invasion, and that Danny and Erica survived to tell their story.

Like it or not, Director John Milius takes a decidedly pointed stance with Red Dawn, steering far away from the typical 80's Hollywood stance of cheap blondes and stories that drink easy like light beer. Whether one appreciated the final result or not is less important than the effort made to tell it. Granted, the film looks dated today, both in tone and feel; but its literary center remains intact, demonstrating the horrors of war and forest survival in a way not seen to that time. In fact, Red Dawn was so controversial in 1984 that it received the first PG-13 rating ever, a fact which might have hurt its potential box office performance. I doubt Milius cared about such minutia, as the film does still resonate as a cult classic. Whatever your perceptions of war and killing to defend one's land, one cannot deny that Red Dawn admirably faced that challenge to tell a stirring and cautionary tale.

The Video - 3.5/5

RED DAWN  invades Blu-ray with a decent MPEG-AVC transfer that's definitely not perfect but passable for a low-cost library release. This version is a bit cleaned up from the DVD release, but still suffers from a myriad of issues including grain and dirt. The problem might be found in the lack of a clean master print from which to base the restoration, an absolute necessity when going down such a path. Although a company like Disney seems to have quite the handle on its animated restorations, Red Dawn is squarely the victim of circumstance, settling for a half-baked transfer rather than doing the film justice. And while definition, sharpness, and clarity improve drastically when the action shifts to the ground, the image still doesn't dazzle, but it won't terribly disappoint either. As we approach the 30-year anniversary of Red Dawn, perhaps the studio will revive a better master print to give the film the visual attention it deserves.

The Audio 3/5

Once again, audiences are treated to a fair DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack for Red Dawn that neither impresses nor disappoints. Gunfire and explosions come off as typical 80's sound effects, missing any real thunderous impact; hand-to-fighting effects also suffer, but given the limitations in sound at the time, the overall effect isn't as terrible as one might think. At some points in the movie, automatic weapons fire and tank and RPG shells actually get a better treatment than in other places, leading one to believe the entire audio field might have suffered from issues at the source, which would have resulted in the uneven soundfield. And while zero ambience seems to arrive in the rear speakers, dialogue is sharp throughout. Overall, it's a fair effort.

Supplements - 2/5

Perhaps the worst part of Red Dawn lies in its limp features which were ported over from the DVD release. There is no top menu available, and all features must be accessed during the film's playback. There's no retrospective, nor a commentary to be had. In fact, only one new feature (the trailer) is offered in HD. I haven't seen this sort of dropped ball since Blu-ray was introduced. I had hoped we would be over such humble beginnings, but the team in charge of Red Dawn obviously didn't think it was a problem.

Red Dawn Rising (23:00): A look-back at the movie, complete with acst and crew interviews.
Building the Red Menace (9:36): A featurette on Director John Milius' extensive military knowledge of hardware and the process of constructing Russian equipment for the film.
Training for WWIII (9:49): This section discusses how the actors were trained to fight and became familiarized with the weapons featured in the film.
WWIII Comes to Town (13:26): A good featurette showing how locations in New Mexico and Las Vegas were utilized for the film.
Red Dawn Theatrical Trailer (1080p, 2:16)

The Final Word - 3.5/5

Red Dawn was a kick in the teeth for its time, and its message still resonates. With the world seemingly spiraling towards some sort of armed conflict, it connects with the dangerous times in which we live, portraying a world where civilization itself could be upended. Debate still rages as to Red Dawn's merits, but its message started an entire genre that encapsulates so much of our current lives within it. And although this discounted library offering is lacking in almost every way, the script and performances are solid. Movies about death and war are commonplace today, but Red Dawn probably began the trend. If you want to see the genre in its earliest form, check out this release.

HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Review. Wickedly Delicious Fun

HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Review
By: MattInRC

HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS is wickedly delicious fun. Just check any desire for reality at the door.

January 2013 has turned into an exceptional month for new films. With releases like Gangster Squad, Broken City, and even Promised Land offering deeper, non-throwaway fare, HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS arrives needing to prove its meddle to keep this surprising January run going. Luckily, the film does just that, delivering great action, a tight (albeit short) story, and solid acting by its stars.

Based on the Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm fairy tale of the same name, HG:WH is basically Part 2 of the story, following the adventures of siblings Hansel (Jeremy Renner, The Avengers) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton, Clash of the Titans) after they escape certain death during childhood to become prolific contract killers. Armed with an array of high-tech gadgetry (reminding one of 19th Century 007's) Hansel and Gretel find plenty of action - burnings, hangings, and beheadings follow, memorialized in newspaper reports which dominate the opening credits. The duo are soon contracted to defend the town of Augsburg who has lost 11 children to witch kidnappings, all of which seem to have no connection. The town's sheriff (Peter Stormare, Armageddon) doesn't buy into Hansel and Gretel's street cred, deciding to prosecute an accused witch (newcomer Pihla Viitala) without a trial. One broken nose and a concussion later, Berringer sends his own team out to find the children, but several are killed by the evil sorceress Muriel (Famke Janssen, X-Men Trilogy), who allows one surviving member to return to the town's tavern before exploding in front of the crowd. Such bloodfest is common in HG:WH, as the siblings dig deeper into the kidnappings by 'interrogating' witches along the way. When they learn that Muriel is planning to make all witches invulnerable during a ceremony involving the kidnapped children, Hansel and Gretel must sacrifice everything to stop Muriel before the region is plunged into total darkness.

Director/Writer Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) crafts a fairly vicious affair, complete with severed human heads, witch bodies torn through piano wire, and other gruesome employs. One might be led to believe that violence is all you get with HG:WH, and for the most part that's true. But, Wirkola and Co-Writer D.W. Harper insert smart humor and a little sexiness at propitious moments. There's also a critical side story explaining what happened to their parents, but the main play here is the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter-esque violence that looks at once to be totally unbelievable yet is still highly enjoyable. Perhaps it's due to the terrific 3D conversion (yes, I did say that) or the IMAX experience, but the element surrounding the suspension of disbelief plays a necessary role here, a fact which audiences should already be used to 'switching on.' Doing so opens the eyes to a wild visual fest complete with a troll named Edward, a witch gathering ala Star Wars cantina, and several very good highly-stylized action sequences. Wirkola gets the most out of Renner and Atherton, who grew on me as the film progressed (I disliked the previews, to be honest), while Janssen is a perfect mix of sultry and vicious in leading her victims to a cruel death. The music, courtesy of Composer Hans Zimmer (Gladiator) and his Remote Control Productions protegee Atli Örvarsson (The Eagle), is well-crafted, marching to a pulsing witch killer soundtrack while Renner and Arterton slash their way to the film's dramatic conclusion. And while the film's 88-minute runtime is a bit short, it's a tightly focused with just enough character development to connect the bridges.

I heard critics last night complaining about the implausibility of the story - get real. You don't watch HG:WH for deep intellectualism, and the film has no intention of delivering it, instead bringing plenty of action, funny one-liners, and Edward the troll into the mix. If you liked Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter or Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing, HG:WH will certainly appeal to you. If your intent is to see the classic Grimm Fairy Tale retold as a sweeping epic of grand scale, spend your money elsewhere. Its summer blockbuster moniker is well-deserved, but don't let that keep you from seeing it in 3D and spending the extra cash if you can for IMAX. I promise you won't be disappointed. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is rated R for nudity, language, and witch ass-kicking violence and has a runtime of 88 minutes.

Arnold Talks THE LEGEND OF CONAN

Here is some new news from our buddies over at TheArnoldfans. They got the inside scoop on a few items concerning THE LEGEND OF CONAN.

THE LEGEND OF CONAN will once again star Arnold Schwarzenegger. The story is said to be a sequel to the 1984 movie, Conan The Barbarian, and it will act as if both Conan The Destroyer and the 2011 reboot, starring Jason Momoa, never existed.

Here is Arnold talking about the upcoming role:

“Well, age doesn't mean anything to me, because I work out every day. I work out twice a day, as a matter of fact. At night I work out with weights, and in the morning I do cardiovascular training. So for me, to get on the set and to swing the sword around again and to ride the horses and all those things doesn't mean anything [does not scare me], because I feel like I did thirty years ago. So as long as I stay in shape, that’s the key thing, and to keep your body young. Even though you do feel the pain when you wipe out and when you do your fight scenes and you get more sore and the body doesn’t come back as quickly and all this . . . but just grind through it, you know? That’s what it’s all about!”

Producer Fredrik Malmberg also gave his two cents about WETA workshop could do for the film:

“As you know right now, we’re concentrating on the story and the script, and then we’ll go out and find the right director who has the same passion as the rest of us in the group. And you always have to let the creative side and let the director put his stamp and mark on it so you never know what’s going to happen with the production design. I mean, we’re trying to get the TOP production people involved. We’re talking all the time about who we’d see doing the production, and our dream would be to have the WETA Workshop guys, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit guys. They are huge Conan fans and they would be great to be involved on the creative side.”

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Sequel On The Way

The Weinstein Company has set a May production start in Asia on a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. There is a script by John Fusco, and TWC is in talks with veteran Chinese director Ronny Yu. Harvey Weinstein is producing.

The new film is derived from the same source material as the Ang Lee-directed 2000 film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and three other Academy Awards. Lee isn’t involved in this one, which is based on Silver Vase, Iron Knight. That is the fifth book in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Du Lu. Crouching Tiger was the fourth book in the series. Fusco, whose credits include Spirit, Hidalgo and The Forbidden Kingdom, is an avid follower of Wu Sia, the centuries-old genre of Chinese fiction that this series is part of.

“This was an opportunity to explore a lifelong passion I’ve had for Wu Sia, and if there wasn’t continuing source material, I would never have gotten involved,” Fusco told me.

The sequel continues to revolve around Yu Shu Lien, the character played in the original by Michelle Yeoh. It’s not immediately clear yet which actors will reprise, but some likely will. “This introduces a new generation of star-crossed lovers, and a new series of antagonists in a battle of good and evil. It has a Knights Errant quality. There is an alternate universe in the books, a martial forest that exists alongside the real world, full of wandering sword fighters, medicine men, defrocked priests, poets, sorcerers and Shaolin renegades. It’s so vast and rich, and I found characters from the second and third books in the series to create a most interesting stew while being as true to the source material as I could be.”

TWC and Sony had battled several years ago over the rights to the books left behind by the author, who died in 1977. Reports quoted his son, Hong Wang, saying his family made very little money from the original film, and that they went out to make another deal. TWC feels it walked away with those theatrical rights and is going ahead with its film, which has a budget north of $20 million.

J.J. Abrams To Direct Next Star Wars Film

TheWrap is reporting that J.J. Abrams will direct the next "Star Wars" film for Disney, taking stewardship of one of Hollywood's most iconic and lucrative film franchises, an individual with knowledge of the production.

"Argo" director Ben Affleck was also in contention, another individual with knowledge of the talks.

Ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm last year and announced it would make new "Star Wars" films, fans, members of the media and industry executives have speculated about which director would take the job. Abrams' name always came up, but he told Entertainment Weekly in November that he wasn't going to take the job.

He did say "Star Wars" was the first movie that "blew my mind" in terms of special effects.

Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams, one of the most successful directors and producers in Hollywood -- and a man beloved by fanboys. He runs one of the industry's top production companies, Bad Robot, and created or co-created television franchises like "Lost," "Fringe" and "Alias." He has also directed film spectacles "Mission: Impossible III," "Star Trek" and "Super 8."

The lure of the Jedi was too strong, and it will no doubt complicate his relationship with Paramount, where Bad Robot is a top supplier. Abrams has been feverishly working on "Star Trek Into Darkness," his second Star Trek film since he rebooted the franchise in 2009. "Into Darkness," still in post-production, opens May 18.

Though he has several producing jobs in front of him, Abrams had been uncommitted as a director. He will have to jump right into "Star Wars," which Disney has slated for a 2015 release. "Little Miss Sunshine" screenwriter Michael Arndt is penning the script.

Chloe Moretz Could Stay

It seems somehow weirdly fitting that the adaptation of Gayle Forman’s life-or-death limbo choice romantic novel If I Stay has been spending lots of time hovering between production and development purgatory. Now it appears to be moving towards the light again – a green light, that is, with news that Chloe Moretz is attached to star and RJ Cutler is in talks to direct.

The plot follows 17-year-old Mia, a gifted classical musician with an indie rocker boyfriend. One cold February morning, she and her family are involved in a car accident that leaves her drifting between life and death, and facing a hard choice: give in to her injuries, or fight to return to the love she knows.

Foreman’s book first hit the Holly-radar back in 2009, when Catherine Hardwicke signed on to direct it for Summit, which had the rights. We thought it was a surprising move, as it came after the studio had decided not to have her make the Twilight sequel despite delivering a big hit the first time around. But the usual complimentary PR statements duly arrived.

Then everything went quiet, Hardwicke developed other projects and now Cutler is the man Summit wants. He’s best known for documentaries, including The September Issue and The World According to Dick Cheney, which had its world premiere at Sundance this month. He’s also been working in TV, running the writers’ room of country music drama Nashville. So the blend of music and weepy drama in Stay does sound like something he could handle. And if Moretz signs on, this could become a rather interesting property, as she's historically brought a little edge to everything she's done. We'll keep an eye out for further news.

Top Gun 3D Trailer Is Here. Feel The Need For Speed

If you've got a hot cup of coffee in your hand, now might be a good time to put it down because this man is requesting permission to fly by. Yes, there's a new Top Gun 3D trailer in town.

No-one should need the plot explaining at this point, which is fortunate because there really isn't one. Suffice to say, hot-shot Tomcat pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell - played by future half of an actual TomKat, Tom Cruise - has some daddy issues, a chip on his shoulder and talent to burn. Twenty-seven years on (gulp) from his first big-screen appearance and his ego is still writing cheques his body can't cash. Although obviously these days it'd be more of a chip-and-pin scenario.

For all its kitsch joys and over-the-top beats, Tony Scott's airborne actioner divides people, but Top Gun on IMAX? We're in. Seriously, it isn't every day you get to see Michael Ironside's head in 70mm.

Mario Bello Joins Frank Grillo In House Of Horror

It’s been a few years since Mario Bello did a true horror movie – and yes, we’re including Grown Ups – but it appears she’s ready to dive into some supernatural chills once more. She’s signed on to a new, James Wan-produced thriller alongside The Grey’s Frank Grillo.

The film – which was called House Of Horror, but is currently making its way through pre-production without a final title – will see a psychologist (Bello, we assume, since she’s credited as Dr Elizabeth Klein) and a cop (Grillo) interrogate the lone survivor of a ghost hunting expedition that went horribly wrong.

While the normal result of such trips is a bunch of overly dramatic people getting scared by “ghostly” noises on a tape recorder or flickering dials on a temperature gauge, this one ended with five people dead and a real mystery to solve.

Wan, who is no stranger to horror himself after his work on the Saw franchise, came up with the concept but handed it to Max La Bella to write and Will Canon to direct. It'll start filming shortly in Louisiana.

Bello has shot Paul Haggis’ The Third Person and Grown Ups 2. She’s currently filming Prisoners with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. Grillo popped up in Gangster Squad and in a small Zero Dark Thirty role. He’s recently worked on Homefront and, more excitingly, is playing Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

MAMA Review. The Ending Will Leave Audiences Divided

MAMA Review
By: RAMA

What did RAMA think of the ending of the film?

MAMA is creepy as hell. Plain and simple. Interesting concept and expansion from writer/director Andres Muschietti who came up with the original short film. Exec-produced by one of my favorite geekmeisters, Guillermo del Toro, though MAMA is not perfect, it has enough scare to keep you up at night…

Five years ago, sisters Victoria and Lilly vanished from their suburban neighborhood without a trace. Since then, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), have been madly searching for them. But when, incredibly, the kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home. As Annabel tries to introduce the children to a normal life, she grows convinced of an evil presence in their house. Are the sisters experiencing traumatic stress, or is a ghost coming to visit them? How did the broken girls survive those years all alone? As she answers these disturbing questions, the new mother will find that the whispers she hears at bedtime are coming from the lips of a deadly presence.

Is it just me or the recent movies that Guillermo del Toro has been producing or exec-producing, because he loves helping promoting other aspiring filmmakers and protégé, seem to have similar storyline where a woman who’s not a mother, is eventually put in a position where she willingly becomes the mother figure, in order to help protect the children (Il Orfanato, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, MAMA). GDT-produced ghost movies also go for the ghosts-are-victims plot, the reason why they’re angry because they’ve been wronged in one way or the other in the past life, which leads to endings that usually involve self sacrifice or the sacrifice or another. MAMA is no different. In its essence, it’s about two girls abandoned in an empty cabin for years, when they were found, they brought home with them an entity that had accompanied them in that supposedly empty cabin.

Jessica Chastain plays the woman who reluctantly agrees to help take care of the children and eventually becomes that mother figure, but she goes up against a whole other mother figure that the children have learned to look up to and depend on, when nobody was around to help them. So it’s a tug-of-war game of Chastain Vs. Mama and what’s at stake is the well being of the children, which by the way was well-played by two fantastic child actors.

MAMA has a few weak points, there are times when it seems that Muschietti doesn’t know how to fit Nikolaj-Coster Waldau’s character into the story after he’s hospitalized and escaped. There are some annoying inconsistencies and unexplained gaps along the way. And as much as I admire Jessica Chastain, she’s a terrific actress, I think this is a case of miscasting, because I can’t get myself to believe that she can be a bassist in a punk rock band, perhaps if the filmmakers have chosen a different profession for her role, I wouldn’t be too judgmental about it.

The ending will leave audiences divided on the morality of it all, and there are things that MAMA could’ve done to make itself a more well-made film, but it’s creepy enough, it’s unique enough to keep you up at night.

Dwayne Johnson Will Fight Monsters With A Teddy Bear

Movie ideas and projects come in many forms. A script, a life story, a sentence on a napkin.

Now New Line has bought one based on an illustration, and it comes with Dwayne Johnson attached to produce and potentially star and Beau Flynn on board to produce. The picture in question was drawn by Alex Panagopoulos, a Greek software engineer turned fantasy artist. It features a little girl asleep in bed while a small brown teddy bear -- brandishing a laughably small wooden sword and shield -- holds an enormous, fanged monster at bay. And in the fashion of a motivational poster, a caption reads “Teddy Bears: Protecting innocent children from monsters under the bed since 1902." (The teddy bear was invented in 1902 by Morris Michtom, who was inspired by a political cartoon featuring President Theodore Roosevelt and a bear he refused to shoot.)

Hiram Garcia, a former assistant to Johnson, found the illustration and brought it to Flynn’s FlynnPictureCo and New Line. The company, Flynn and Johnson together made the 2012 family adventure movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island; Garcia was an associate producer on the film, which made nearly $328 million worldwide. Johnson, Flynn and Garcia will produce what is tentatively called Teddy Bear. Michael Disco and Sam Brown will oversee for New Line; Adam Yoelin is shepherding for FlynnPictureCo.

No writer is attached and the story’s take is being kept secret, but New Line is hoping to launch a big four-quadrant franchise. They no doubt were emboldened by the megahit bear comedy Ted, which made more than $500 million worldwide for Universal last summer -- this project will be much different in tone.

Johnson has a big year ahead of him. The actor formerly known as The Rock next stars in Snitch from Summit, followed by the spring releases G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain. The former pro wrestler also has The Fast and The Furious 6 this summer.

Schwarzenegger Talks New Terminator Film

It’s not every day that Arnold Schwarzenegger jets into London, but with his latest, The Last Stand, premiering here, the Governator set his internal response system to “promote” instead of “fuck you asshole” and sat down with some co-stars to talk about it. But he also dropped mention of other projects on the bubble, including Twins sequel Triplets, King Conan and, because no installment of the franchise would surely be complete without him, The Terminator.

He didn't spill much in the way of details, but having Arnie actually say he’s involved (when he's only been rumored before) is enough for now. Of course, there has been no official announcement from Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures company, which has been developing the new Terminator outing (and recently hired Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier to script it), and it’s probably still just in discussion, but at least he appears to be in the mix.

The bigger question, of course, is what form his involvement will take. With all due respect to the man, he doesn’t look like he did in his T-800 days, so you’d have to figure the ‘borg will be performance capture if it appears at all. Or he could be a completely different character. But we really all just want to see the man himself back on screen in his most iconic role.
